Birch is transferring

According a direct quote by him on CBSsports.com

"I'm leaving.  I'm headed to Toronto now. I enjoyed my time at Pittsburgh, I love Coach (Jamie) Dixon, had no problems with the staff and the players. It just wasn't the right fit for me."

Birch transferring

Jamie Dixon:  “Khem has decided to leave the team for personal reasons.  We thank Khem for his contribution to our program over the last semester and wish him great success in the future.”

  2. Sorry to see him leave but if he could not take the way Jamie was handling him, I will side with Jamie every time.

  4. Welcome Malcom Gilbert. Birch will be missed, but Malcom can do ok in this role. I'm sure Calapri is there telling him that power foward is where you need to be. Next year I'll make you a top 5 pick.. Does not make sense however, to play no basketball for 2 semesters. I think the bottom line is that Jamie wants and needs the 4 star recruits. He wants no issues with start players. Jamie has changed since he took over coaching here, what started as a player's coach where you can break curfew and get away with it, has turned into a little more tuff and if you watch him on the sidelines these days, he is alot different. I would rather have Jamie than Birch, so if thats how it has to be, so be it.

  5. Dixon shouldn't recruit these top 50 guys unless he's sure he can give them a lot of minutes as freshman. That goes for not changing their true positions...

He's going to have even more difficulty getting top players now IMO. Of course I'm sure he'll be starting Adams next year.....right Jamie?

  6. He wasn't meant for Pitt. It takes a unique kind of person and he didn't have the traits that were needed. I'd rather take the No. 100 kid who wants to be here more than the No. 10 kid who doesn't feel like their heart is into it. While it's disappointing they have two superb players coming in already next season and my guess is that there will now be a third excellent player coming in with them.

  9. i'm pretty pissed. he is a great talent. this is a bad loss for the team for this year. he was the most talented player on the team.

  10. @Jackagain

This wasn't about 5-star recruits. This was about Khem Birch who, as Doke said, didn't have the right traits to be here. Top among them it seems: maturity.

  11. I have no problem with this kid leaving if he couldn't fit in. I am glad Jamie chooses not to go the sleaze ball route and coddle these knuckleheads. However...for our program to take the final big leap, Jamie probably will have to start focusing on more of these national 5 star talents. That may require some flexibility on his part and as he continues to mature as a coach we may see him grow in that area. That does not mean he has to compromise on his principles or values of team first, discipline, hard work, and earning your PT. It just means his coaching style needs to continue to evolve as he grows into his status as one of the elite head coaches.

  12. Well said. People think Calipari just rolls the ball out on the floor and let's them play but he is actually very tough on him. Having a great talent does not mean he won't want to work.

  13. don't let the door hit ya in the ass khem birch on your way out the door. five years from now he'll be playing in israel on one of the B teams. good luck with that ya tool.

  14. He's a 19 yr old kid who didn't like being at Pitt. Who cares. He's not the first, nor will he be the last great talent Dixon has brought here.

Big misconception about him though. Many McD's AA never see an NBA floor. This guy isn't Derrick Rose, Carmelo Anthony or Michael Beasley. Can't compare the hype and ability of those guys to Birch just because of the McD's label. Top 10 at his position, not a top-10 overall talent. Steve Adams is an elite talent and is a higher-profile recruit.

Pitt hoops were great before Khem...

  16. Who would be a top 100 recruit still available that could replace him and Pitt has a decent shot of landing?
