Okay this is getting bad

Notre Dame stinks and still had little trouble with Pitt.  It looks like this may not be salvageable.

I'll write why the team is so bad tomorrow but for now, just the basics.

Ashton Gibbs continues to show little offensively with 12 points and no three pointers.

Travon Woodall had no points and was 0-5 from the field, including 0-3 from the line.

Talib Zanna led all Panthers with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Dante Taylor had 4 points and 4 rebounds.

Pitt shot 1-15 from three.  So much for recruiting all of those three point specialists.

Somebody named Alex Dragicevich led all scorers with 22 points.

  1. ok i understand this team is bad with no true leader or offensive threat, but i saw your twitter post that said theres always pitt football, but how can you say that? pitt football was mediocre this and pitt basketball has been better over the past 9 years

  2. mediocre this year**

  3. I don't know - maybe I'm way over simplifying this but, sports are so reliant on momentum.

ND goes unconscious in the 2nd half and we couldn't hit anything.

They played by FAR their best game of the season and it was at home where they're practically unbeatable.

Pitt will make the NCAA's - and, even make some unexpected noise.

Woodall comes back - Ashton finds his shot as a result and the young guys keep getting better.

Dixon will have them going come March - mark it down.

  4. we just have to hope they get better and make the tourney. Better to excel in the tourney than the regular season. ND can have this one.

  5. Coming from somebody who until earlier tonight thought they would make the tourney, I now would be surprised. There's playing bad and being bad, and I fear it's more the latter.

  6. Zatti - that's nice to think but completely unrealistic. ND was 9th pre-season before they lost their best player and Pitt just got man handled by them. People are just assuming Pitt will make the tourney because they have for nine years straight but they have no quality wins and now three bad losses. They will need to go 9-8 in the BE to just get to 20 wins and unless three of those wins are against Syracuse, UConn, and Louisville, their RPI is going to suck.

Every team is entitled to a down year and this will be Pitt's. Coach Dixon didn't forget how to coach - this team simply has no leadership ans an overall lack of talent. If a loss at home to Wagner can't get the attention of a team, (and it sure didn't look like it got their attention by the way they played tonight), it is a VERY bad sign. Hopefully they will get better but "better" is relative with this group. I just hope Adams and Robinson are ready to go next year because they should be starting next year. I hope to God that Dixon doesn't start Dante next year at center just because he is a senior. He is the biggest disappointment of a player at Pitt that I can ever remember.

Chris, is Pitt involved with any twos that could come in next year if Epps is sent on his way??? They really need to get a real two in their system.

  7. Do you think the recent turnover in assistants has lead to some inconsistency in the type of player Pitt typically goes after? No one on the team plays with that chip on their shoulder that you come to expect from Dixon coached teams.

I don't see any leadership at the player level on this team. Nas and Gibbs have disappointed me in this regard.

  8. chris i do apologize i thought u were being serious about that pitt football thing

  9. They are always recruiting every position because you never know but as of now I don't see any twos that could start right away. I also hope they go for talent over experience, meaning I would love to see Adams and Robinson start next season. I'd rather lose with players with high ceilings.

  10. Looks like Dixon's NCAA streak is all but over....this team stinks from top to bottom. If they go .500 in the BE, Dixon should be coach of the year.

They have no inside threat and get killed every game on the 3...they can't defend it or make them when they have the ball. That's all she wrote folks...

  11. Patterson and Moore... one of them needs to step it up. They are basically getting zero production from the 2/3.

  12. If Woodall can come back and regain his shooting and Gibbs can make some shots Pitt may squeeze out 9 more wins looking at their schedule. Maybe 10. That will get them 20 wins and maybe an invite if win at least 1 in the BE Tournament.

Taylor is soft and just terrible this year. 2 points against Wagner...if Dixon has him stating ahead of Adams after the 5th game I'll scream!

This will become a trend if Dixon screws up Adams too....

  13. Pitt really needed a BIG man inside tonight....any reason why Dixon the genius didn't give Gilbert some playing time?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hey Chris, do you still think Dixon gets this team to 25+ wins?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Gilbert has been MIA the past two games and their inside defensive / rebounding suffered greatly.

  16. Keep in mind that last year UCONN finished 9th in the BE, the team just needs to make sure they are focused come February and March.

    ReplyDelete
  17. UConn also won the Maui Invitational in November last year, with other significant non-con wins too. Pitt's NCAA resume currently consists of... OK.St and Tennessee, two below mediocre teams. The "peak in Feb/March" argument strikes me as laughable. They need to get a WHOLE lot better right NOW to have any hopes of snagging an invite. At this point, you gotta think 10-8 in conference (which I don't see them doing anyway) might not even be enough to secure an NCAA bid.

  18. We need some senior leadership(Hello Gibbs and Robinson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Start kicking some ass!

    ReplyDelete
  19. There is little chemistry on this team and the play is dysfunctional. Is this what you get when mediocre talent and inexperience come together?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I watched the game last night, and I'm not so sure that it is a lack of talent that is the problem, but rather a lack of confidence. No one is playing with any aggression...seems like they are playing to not make mistakes. It is obvious that Gibbs really lacks confidence in his shot right now. If he can get some of them to start falling, that should improve his and the rest of the team's confidence. We need someone to step up and want to be that go-to guy because so far there isn't one.

  21. This is all on Jamie Dixon. His recruiting stunk for too many years, and it shows with a bunch of talentless, unathletic players who don't even have the heart or desire that the teams earlier in the decade had.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Worse than just being a bad team, this Pitt roster appears to lack any type of motivation or fire when faced with adversity. I saw alot of heads hanging down the stretch vs Notre Dame last night. The team also appears undersized and is athletically inferior to its competition! maybe it's time Dixon break the mould and go to the bench (for whatever that might do??? It's gotta be worth a try? vs trotting the same guys out there to embarass themselves once more.)

    ReplyDelete
  23. The two most important things a center does is clog the middle and rebound defensively. Taylor does neither. Jamie seems blind to his shortcomings. He is also grossly undermotivated since Birch left.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Dokish, what would your ideal lineup be - including bench?

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm glad this isn't a Pirates blog... some commenter would write, after watching Maholm give up 8 runs in 2 innings, "yeah, but his FIP is 3.9".

Things are very clear in basketball, and it's clear that Pitt is pretty awful. Zanna, Robinson, Patterson, Moore, Taylor - I don't know if there's one redeeming player out of the bunch.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Two comments/questions:

    1) Any possibility of Birch rejoining the team?
    2) Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like they can't "get into" this year's team?

I've watch them from the start of the year and I haven't been able to identify with the team yet, aside from a couple good plays here and there. Going back to all the past Pitt teams, there were always guys you could relate to or root for - Jaron Brown, Julius Page - even guys that drove you crazy like Antonio Graves, it was hard not to root for him to succeed and get excited to see his effort and improvement over the years.

I just don't see any effort on this year's Pitt squad. Pitt has always had teams with some level of "medicore talent", but they always out worked opponents and showed max effort.

    ReplyDelete
  27. so do you think Dixon "has lost the locker room"? If lack of effort is a problem, that may indicate a difference of opinion between coach and player or some other lack of motivation. I don't really buy that these guys are less talented than past pitt teams. If you're only as good as you need to be, maybe this team is going to do just enough to make the tournament....but enough aimless speculation out of me.

  28. @Ronald,

Things are imploding quickly for Pitt and Jamie Dixon. These guys just suck. Can't shoot, can't defend, can't rebound, no hustle, no heart! Have I left anything out?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Pitt looked very bad last night against Notre Dame. Taylor continues not to play like he "wants it". Gibbs is not a point guard and cannot run Pitt's half court offense. They need to get him back into the shooting guard position. Brad Wanamaker was the one who ran the half court offense last year and that was the reason for Gibb's success.

Given all the above I still believe that our coach can even turn this team around. Many have underestimated Coach Dixon over the years, much to their chagrin. The improvement may not be noticeable in the next couple of games but by mid January, things will be better. Will Pitt make the NCAA tournament? Maybe, but it will be a close thing possibly depending on how well they do in the Big East tournament.

  30. Houston, we have a problem!

    Well, two:

    1. Nasir is on the floor -- and when isn't he? -- we have four guys 6'-4 or shorter in the lineup. Sure, Nasir has heart, but that's a high school team, not a team the Big East.

    2. We have lost a LOT of assistant coaches over the past 3-4 years. I don't think we've replaced like for like.

We've struggled all year, not just the past two games. To make the NIT, gotta have a winning record. I just don't see it this year....

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well Chris, can you outline why you thought Dixon would win 25+ and now they obviously wont?

  32. I'm writing an article right now about Pitt's problems.
