Marquette 62 Pittsburgh 57

Well, it was a better effort, but Pitt loses their sixth in a row and are now 11-7 overall and 0-5 in the Big East.

The only good part for Pitt was that Jamie Dixon finally realized that Ashton Gibbs at the point was not a good thing so he gave Isaiah Epps a chance.  The redshirt freshman responded for the most part.  He only had 2 points, 2 assists, and 2 steals in 26 minutes but he only had one of Pitt's seventeen turnovers.  He also enabled Gibbs to move to the two where he had a career high 29 points.  Not playing out of position also helped Gibbs have just one turnover.

Now the bad.  Nasir Robinson had 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 turnovers but he also has SEVEN turnovers.   Lamar Patterson added four more turnovers to go with 7 points and 7 rebounds.

Next up the Panthers play on Monday night at No. 1 Syracuse.  Good luck with that.

  1. Nasir,

Should be on the bench, he wouldn't be starting on any other big east team, this team has little talent and no depth.

  2. how can a team keep turning the ball over like that repeatedly? ughhhhhh!!!!!

  3. It's mostly Robinson and Patterson, or at least it was today. They are a train wreck when handling the ball.

  4. Chris James Robinson will be on tv Monday at one on espnu if u want to get a look at him and Steven Adams will be on espn3.com tomorrow at six

  6. Also saw an article from chad ford who claims Adams would consider not going to Pitt if he was in lottery but in the same article he said Norte dame prep is in Baltimore so idk what to think have u heard anything?

  7. As far as I know, Adams doesn't have a choice. He has to be at Pitt for one year.

  8. It's unreal how a team repeatedly over the years cannot break the press. They constantly dribble where the other team wants them to go and get trapped. There is never anyone flash middle of the court to break the press. Even the announcers said that today. That is taught in 6th grade basketball. It was a better effort but still not where it needs to be especially defensively. Dixon finally trusted one of his point guards to run the offense in Epps and let Gibbs be the 2 and he throws up 29 points. It was obvious that Gibbs couldn't run the point and still score. Why did it take Dixon this long to adapt? I am a Dixon supporter but some of his decisions just baffle me.

  9. Hey Doke a little birdie informed me that Pederson, Berenato and the University are being sued by former woman's player Brittany Thomas. Don't recall her story at all.

  10. Don't know anything about it.

As for Dixon and his ball handlers, I've been screaming about it for years. There's no excuse not to have any true point guards on this team. He keeps taking these little SGs and trying to make them PGs but it's not that easy. True PGs are born not made!!

  11. This team needs a monster rebounder from the JUCO ranks. A kid who wants the ball. That was borderline gutless in the second half today. Marquette got every important rebound.

  12. Can this team improve enough to get to six wins and land a spot in the NIT?

Jamie should stick with the rotation that he went with today.

Oh yeah, a JUCO guard would be nice, too.

  13. I really think Dixon has fallen into that recruiting SG's because early in his career he was criticized because Pitt never had shooters. Now he recruits them and tries to covert them and it doesn't work on this level. Pure point guards have a different mindset than SG's. They are unselfish and are leaders, SG's have the me first attitude which is needed to be a scorer. The two don't mix. Imagine if Pitt would have landed TJ McConnell, this team wouldn't be 0 for in the BE.

  14. How many minutes did Dante Taylor have today? Definitely agree that this rotation needs to stay. Gilbert brought a little toughness to the game today, his redshift is gone so he needs to play more and get some experience.

  15. Dante picked up quick fouls every time he went into the game.

I'm over him now. The center spot should be manned mostly by Zanna and Gilbert and Dante sees limited minutes. No need for me to hate on Taylor. Not every McD player pans out. I wish he did, but it wasn't in the cards. Adams is the guy next season, and Gilbert, as a junior, should be roaring to go in 2013-14.

  16. It's been much, much worse than I expected ... I thought they'd actually be decent this year and make the tourney for the umpteenth consecutive time.

All the weaknesses in Dixon's coaching are being exposed becoz he doesn't have the talent or the grit on the floor to cover for them.

  18. Chis, i just saw on rivals that mike caprara committed to pitt. He is listed as an mlb but the only thing negative ive heard about him is hes not bery big. Will he stay at mlb or possibly move to safety?

  19. Not only are Patterson and Nas bad ball handlers they are awful in crunch time. I hate saying that because I like both players. I can't wait for Zanna to be at the 4 with Adam's/Gilbert in the middle next year.

  20. It was refreshing to see a change in the coaching preperation for this game. Hopefully it is a sign of things to come. They need it.

Why wait till next year to move somebody new to the 4 position. It was just that short-sightedness that may have cost this team Birch.

7 turovers and getting overpowered for critical rebounds should cost Robinson his starting job.

  21. Chris,

I know Coach Dixon doesn't like to do this, but is there any chance Cameron Wright is "encouraged" to look elsewhere next season so Pitt can overrecruit for 2012? This is his second season in the program and he doesn't look like a contributor now or at any point in the future. It may however be too late to pull in a true scoring two-guard at this point in the recruiting game.

Also, if Lamar Patterson would get involved with any other off-court incidents (he's been suspended twice I believe already) could he be dismissed from the team for good? His atrocious play today not withstanding, I just don't see as much more than a role player on a good team and this roster is already full of role players. The turnovers were awful today and the next big shot he makes at a key moment will be the first.

  22. I love how I was bashed for suggesting Epps should play, when it was pretty obvious that they looked better when he was in there.

At a minimum, you can't play Patterson with Gibbs in there due to the lack of athleticism on the perimeter. You also can't keep playing him at 4 unless you want to get killed on the boards.

Taylor is simply not the problem. He never gets the ball when he's open in the post on offense and he's having to commit fouls right and left either on hedges or down low trying to make up for the terrible D on the perimeter.

  23. I'll be honest, I didn't see a strong performance from Epps as a possibility. Kudos to him for proving me wrong. It's still like playing 4 on 5 offensively with him at the point, but at least he makes the other 4 better.
I'd be content to see less and less of Patterson -- I'm not just piling on after his horrific performance, but I just don't see what he brings. I'd rather live and die with Moore.
Taylor may not be THE problem, but he is A problem. Slow-footed defensively, not tough enough to be a factor rebounding.

  24. A better effort but the lack of an inside-out game kills them. Almost no offensive production from Zanna/Taylor/Gilbert. Pitt thrived for a long time on the ability of a big man to catch it inside and kick it back out to a shooter. Just don't have that this year. And as other posters have said, they have never been good against a press.

  25. Chris, can you explain what you saw in this team to have a blog entry about them winning 25+ games after some OOC struggles? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I saw Dixon getting less talented teams to 25+ wins. That's what I saw. Nobody had any idea that they would be this bad. Nobody.

  27. Chris,

I don't think the team is that bad. A couple of things.

Brad, Gil and Gary showed a lot of fire and leadership last year but with Gibbs, we have none of that.

Even Mrs. Moody commented as to how Gary McGee completely changed his body and play through hard work.

Taylor on the other hand has more talent that McGee ever dreamed of and he's just throwing it all away simply because he doesn't WANT it like Gary did.

Dixon lost Bond because of Birch and then Birch leaves - nice - and with Taylor being almost a complete bust, here we are.

When/if Tray comes back and when/if Epps and Johnson improve, I think that we'll see a different team.

Even though I don't see much with Cam Wright at this point, we have to keep in mind that he and Epps are just RS Freshmen and Johnson a true freshman.

We played reasonable well yesterday against a decent Marquette team and if we continue to play like that and keep Epps and Johnson at the point, I still think that we can make a run at the NCAA's.

  28. I don't know how much they can salvage this season, but there's a fine line between an excellent team and a bad team in basketball. Because there aren't a lot of players, one or two can make a big difference and a 7'0" lottery pick makes a difference.

    ReplyDelete
  29. If this team can make the NIT it would be a miracle. It will take six wins to do so and I think that will be tough to achieve. Birch's scholarship needs to go to a JUCO would can defend the perimeter or one who is a monster on the boards.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think if pitts going to get a juco guard they need one who can fill up the basket. Pitt doesnt have an agressive guard who attacks the rim like they did with young and inconsistantly with gil.
