Panthers land local linebacker

New Pitt coach Paul Chryst gets his first commitment as Woodland Hills linebacker Mike Caprara gave the Panthers the good news today.  Caprara is only 6'0" and 205 pounds (at most), but he's a tough kid who would have gotten a lot more offers if he was bigger.

  1. Do you see a position change to maybe safety or will get add enough weight that he can manage to stay at linebacker

  2. It's hard to say where he'll be in the future.

  3. Does this mean no rippy

  4. Not sure of Sean Lee's size in high school but I will tell you this, it wasnt any bigger than Caprara. Look at his picture from when he and Christa Harmotto were named athletes of the year for the Post. He was not very big at all. I think his size is no question now. It's all genetics from here on out. Another inch and 20 pounds would do wonders but if not then just get faster and play safety. Glad to have him.

  6. Sean Lee was 6'2" in high school and well over 200 pounds.

  7. I'm sure Caprara can get up to 230 pounds after two years in the program. Sounds like he'll make a terrific inside linebacker.

  8. You can play the outside in college at 210. What was the name of that WR that converted to LB for Pitt a few years back? That guy was a midget. Couldn't have weighed more than 205 soaking wet.

    ReplyDelete
  9. ESPN has him as a two star and no other data. Seems like a waste of a scholarship. Do not understand this infatuation with local kids that are just not that good.

  10. Sean Lee was 6'3 and 215 according to Yahoo when in high school. Ok so he was taller but he played at Penn State at 235 and now plays at 245. Oh,and ESPN now has him at 6'2 245. Standing next to Christa Harmotto must have made him look smaller! hahah

Like I said though if he could put on some weight he may be able to stay at linebacker. Probably will redshirt this year so thats probably all he will do. Eat spaghetti and workout! Doesn't have to grow to be good at linebacker but he will need to add the weight.

Like I said previously, glad to have him and good luck to him!

  11. Feel like this is as much about opening/keeping open WPIAL pipelines as it is bringing in the actual player? If there's one school Pitt wants to keep open ties to, it's Woody High...

    ReplyDelete
  12. Austin Ransom was the WR that switched to LB.

  13. John in sc, when the only negative is hes 6' instead of 6'2" how is that a waste of a scholarship? He had woody highs tackling record before his senior year started.... At woody high. To make it simple hes a hell of a football player and if he can get into the 235 range, fine, if not he can just get to 215 and play safety. If he was being recruited by penn state, michigan state, and south carolina then he can play football.

  14. Let's not forget two other kids who played well on defense as 'undersized players'; H.B. Blades was 5'10" & 235 at PITT and now we have Andrew Taglianetti at 5'11" and 190.

Those guys are small compared to others at the same positions and there are kids like this at every team in college ball.

  15. Caprara is the real deal according to all the information I've been able to get. Plays all over the field, has good instincts, and never gives up. The exact kind of kid you wish everyone on the team would play like.

  16. Robert Foster is best WR in country and Pitt better land him if they want turn the corner and become a player in ACC. This kid is a program changer. We have the inside track with him Shell being friends. But we will see if Chrystal can pass first test and land the big time recruit from the area.

  17. Anonymous, hes also very good friends with 2014 qb commit chandler kincade. Id be very interested to see how hard chryst recruits him

  18. I remember the same things being said about Scott McKillop coming out of High School, the kid turned out all right at Pitt

    ReplyDelete
  19. The same stuff was not said about Scott mckillop coming out of high school. Scott was a *** recruit and had quite a few offers. Fans were ecstatic we landed him (this was towards the end of walts career when his recruiting took a slide). The doubters of Scott came in his junior year when he had to replace hb blades. He had not played much on defense and fans were doubting he could match blade's output. As it turned out, he exceeded it...

  20. On a side note steven adams had his american debut last night for notre dame prep. He had 23 points 10 rebounds 2 assists and multiple blocks. He went up against #1 center in 2013 nerlens noel who had 12 points 4 rebounds 5 blocks and a few assists. Adams looked very good considering this is his first school game in america. He plays again tonight at 6 on espn3.com

  21. Caprara is probably more like 5'11" and 200 pounds now and I have no idea how much more weight he can put on. Some kids can get bigger and some kids have frames where they can't do much more or they'll be bulky. I wouldn't want a bunch of these kids recruited, but 2/3 of most classes don't do anything anyway. At least with this kid, worse case scenario he is a special teams player, great practice player to help the other players, and a great team leader, on and off the field. That alone is reason to sign the kid. If he actually turns into a solid linebacker, too, then that's just an added bonus.

  22. Why not wait to offer a scholarship until the other high ceiling guys dont accept. It's not like anyone else was knocking down his door and he would accept at anytime.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Pitt still has 5 scholarships and maybe more depending on transfersso i dont see what the big deal is.

Chris, hear anything about denmans visit? I know he has his wisconsin official next weekend but he surely told someone what he thought of pitt.

  24. Agree with JW, this was about the new staff showing some love by throwing the locals a bone.

As for all those lovers of the WPIAL, it is a shell of its former self ever since the great Western PA diaspora of the late twentieth century.

    ReplyDelete
  25. John, that doesnt change the fact that the wpial still churns out some if the countries best players and i also agree with jw that if theres one wpial school for pitt to get in with its wh

  26. Dokish-Any update on Danny O'Brien from Maryland? Can you give us some info on how good he is or hiw good he can be? Basically, what do you know about skill set?

    ReplyDelete
  27. If O'Brien graduates he would have two years of eligibility left. He's a big pro-style QB that was the ACC Rookie of the Year but then Edsall came in and changed the offense. O'Brien lost his job. With Chryst teaching he could be a bonafide high NFL draft pick. But as of now, he hasn't transferred from Maryland and he may not.

As for Denman, not much word yet. If he gets blown away by Pitt then they have a chance. If he merely liked it then it probably won't be enough.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I would normally agree with you guys but I think he only has 5 scholarships left to give out to get HIS type of players. To throw someone a bone when you have 20 scholarships left or after your big time recruits made there decision is one thing. Focus on your big fish still out there Cox, Holtz, Denman, and Rippy.

If Chrsyt see's Caprara as a D1 player then thats one thing but I hate for Pitt to start settling for 2 Star recruits already.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Could be a diamond in the rough. Nobody here has any idea whether hell produce or never see the field. The star system means nothing. Greg romeus had no star ranking and look at what pitt got out of him.

Thanks chris im guessing we wont know much about denmans visit until later this week

    ReplyDelete
  30. The star system means everything. There's always exceptions to the rule but look at the best classes and highest rated kids and there usually the best teams.

There's a reason we all want Denman. Because he is a FOUR star prospect. Were not talking about any 2 star lineman recruits visits are we. I have nothing against Caprara I just wish we can land some highly rated guys with these last few spots left.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Trust me, if Pitt wants Cox, Holtz, Denman, and Rippy, and they want Pitt, it will happen.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The star system is a very rough guide to give fans a general idea of how good their team might be. Teams go after the players they think will best help their team, that has nothing to do with how outsiders view them.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Kid sounds like a real high character guy. You have to have a chunk of these types of kids to make sure the team overall believe in working hard, having character, etc. Wayne Capers should be next. Kid had worked his butt off getting healthy and by all accounts, is smart and a great leader. Mix these guys in with Voytik, and it'll make a difference. Not saying we don't need the 4 star linemen, but character is important.

    ReplyDelete
  34. How much of a limb are you going out on by saying if Pitt wants "x, y and z" and "x, y, and z" want Pitt, it will happen? I mean, isnt that how all recruits are picking a school?

There is certainly going to be some reservation about picking Pitt right now and that can be understood. They've had like 6 coaches in a years time. It's not a stable environment right now. No one knows how much longer they'll be in the Big East. Chryst may be able to do some stuff, but it will take a long time.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I don't know what your point is. What I'm saying is, signing Caprara will not cost them one of those other kids. If they want them and the kids wants to come to Pitt, they will find a way.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Looking at his tape, the kid can play. Who cares about size when he produced at a high level.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Who or what is the Arizona connection to the western pa recruits besides the nice weather.

    ReplyDelete
  38. It's because Calvin Magee, Tony Gibson, and Tony Dews are there now and they have been recruiting these kids for Pitt for a long time..

    ReplyDelete
  39. Concerned about potentially losing Conwell, but he may be more suited to the 3-3-5 and that is what he wants to play in. We have got to bring in at least 2 of Conwell, Holtz, Rippy, Cox.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Chyrst and Bolstad were very good at developing lower-ranked players at Wisconsin. Given that, I think that Caprara is a good get for Pitt. The fact that giving him a scholarship can help the new coach develop a relationship with Woody Hills is an added bonus.

Chris, why did you reinstate the anonymous option?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Because people were having problems checking in and I didn't have the desire to figure out why.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Chris, you dont think pitt will retain conwell and get one of either holtz, rippy, or cox? I thought holtz was somewhat of a pitt lean

    ReplyDelete
  43. Conwell had a good trip to Arizona so that's up in the air. Rippy and Cox may be heading elsewhere, too.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I see. I'd be happy with just holtz though, hopefully. do you know when he'll make his decision? I thinks he's visited all if his top 3.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Don't know when. It sounded like Holtz was liking his trip but then wanted to come home so I think it's probably pretty good for Pitt.

    ReplyDelete
  46. It took me a little while to figure out how to comment without the "Anonymous" option, until I realized that Google was an easy way to do it.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I see nothing wrong with having a few hard nosed football players on the team. Not the biggest...Not the fastest...Just tough.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Doke -
What gives with recruiting? Looks like we've got kids looking to leave faster than we can bring them aboard. Should we be worried that Chryst hasn't sealed the deal with anyone other than Caprara? I just saw TJ Neal signed elsewhere, as did Jaylen Coleman a couple weeks back. Looking at who Pitt has offers out to, doesn't look good that we will get much more than Holtz.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Is there any chance that Anthony Nixon gives Pitt another look with the coaching change? That might give the staff some options to consider if Demetrious Cox is really thinking elsewhere. Both players seem to have versatility and 'football player' relevant athleticism. Does that or something/someone (Bam Bradley perhaps, but Ohio State came into the picture late, and he is an Ohio guy, so....) make sense Chris? Love the blog by the way. Great job.

    ReplyDelete
  50. JM - I believe Jaylen Coleman had his offer pulled by Pitt and I don't think TJ Neal was not high on Pitt.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Does pitt even need a safety? They have ridiculous depth in the secondary. Michigan transfer ray vinopal, 4 star safety lafayette pitts who redshirted in 2011, and the safety who got injured this year whos name is escaping me will all be back next year.

Chris, would cox be interested in playing wide reciever for pitt? It seems like pitts wr's are either 6'5" or 5'10 so him being 6' he could probably find a spot up in the depth chart early on.

    ReplyDelete
  52. pk - good point on safety depth. I was thinking the same thing about WR for Nixon, which he did play at CC.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Also at safety was roderick ryles, a talented florida kid but im not sure if he used his rs last year or not

    ReplyDelete
  54. Congrats on the new staff's first recruit.

However, I certainly hope we can do better -- a LOT better -- than a zero-star (literally) 5'-11 (per Scout) 200 pound MLB. That would be a small safety, let alone MLB.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Look at how the rankings turned out for Jared holley

    ReplyDelete
  56. Apparently adam pankey decommitted from pitt after his wvu visit and is now considering both of them... Odd decision imo
