Panthers pull the scholarship offer of Marzett Geter

As I suspected they would do, due mostly to his lack of judgement on twitter when he criticized some of the decisions of the program, among other things, the Panthers decided to let Sto-Rox CB Marzett Geter go on his merry way.  Geter is now the fourth player to part ways with Pitt since Paul Chryst has taken the job.  A fifth changed schools before Chryst was hired.  Two more, Adam Pankey and Myles Hilliard, are wavering, and there are still others who may not eventually be signed for one reason or the other.

  1. Great job Coach! This is the best news I have heard since they hired him. Geter would have been problems on the field and in the classroom (do they even have classrooms in the Rox?)

    1. Not very good ones, however. And yes, I live in the Rox.

    2. Asswipe? Really? When was the last time you were in the Rox frankarms? I grew up right up the street and the Rox has fallen apart and the School district has never been that great.

Geter won't even make it into Slippery Rock.

  2. I posted comments on your blog the other day that based upon Geters posts the last few days, he had his offer from Pitt pulled!!!

I like that Chryst did that. As soon as I read the initial Trib report, I thought he should pull the ship.
Geter is not BCS D1 quality and he was given a ship by Graham in hopes of getting Rippy.

  3. Chris, have there been any 2013 prospects pop up that this staff has interest in? RB david williams just recieved an offer from wisconsin and has had one from pitt. Im guessing hed be one that this staff would have interest in.

  4. Great to see that our new coach is not going to let the tail wag the dog

  5. There are many 2013 prospects that Pitt are already interested in.

  6. Chris, has pitt been focusing more on 2013 or are they still only concentrating on 2012

  7. Although Chryst agreed to honor all scholarships, it is best that he get the student-athletes with which he is most comfortable. Immaturity on the part of some athletes does not have to be tolerated. Remember there is a low correlation between athlete ratings and their subsequent performance in college. Coaching is much more important. Case in point: Recruiter Wannstedt versus Coach Wannstedt.

    1. Recruiter Wanny would have probably brushed aside the Geter tweet...
afraid he would upset the wpial!!
look what that got Wanny... the wpial all-star team with lots of problems and he was shown the door!!

I like that Chryst pulled the offer!
Its a privilige to play football at Pitt on a free ride.
Geter was given an offer by Graham in hopes to land Rippy. Graham did the same last year when Layfeayette Pitts negotiated for Graham to give Javonte an offer also. Javonte didn't qualify... went prep... his offer was either pulled or somehting by Chryst!!! I like it!!!

  8. Good for Coach Chryst. Glad to see he's not going to put up with moronic Twitter comments from players, especially recruits. When are people going to realize that if you want to make critical comments, don't put them on Twitter, That is, unless you're willing to face the consequences.

How dumb can you be to publicly criticize the program that offered you a scholarship? Goodbye and good riddance.

  9. Can somebody give me an update on bam bradley? Last i heard he was down to pitt, stanford, and osu but im hearing that he cut osu from the list. Is this true?

  10. What exactly was he saying that pissed off everybody?

  11. When Ryan Lewis became the fourth cornerback to commit to the Panthers, Geter tweeted, "Another corner commits. I'm not liking this at all" and suggested Pitt was "wasting" scholarships."

I addition he tweeted that during the MNC game the LSU QB (who was playing very poorly; "Jordan Jefferson is the New Tino from Pitt"

  12. Interesting....it's always dangerous to put too much info on social networks, or too much weight on what you read on them...if Pitt pulled the scholarship because of what he tweeted, their judgement wasn't the greatest either.

    1. Disagree anonymous...
Many Pitt alum were calling for the ship to be pulled.
A cancer like that needs to be cut from the locker room!!
It was good judgment on Pitt's part. Bad judgment on Geters part.

  13. Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% knowing when to keep your mouth shut... I feel bad for a kid who is probably a good kid but maybe just a little to vocal, but I also think coach Chryst did the right thing by setting an example of what is appropriate and what isn't. He kept talking about "respect for the game" during his press conference and I think this shows that he walks the walk as well as talks that talk.

  14. Look, Coach Chryst should be applauded loudly by the High School Coaching community for pulling the scholarship. Name me a High School Coach who has not been questioned by a player or a players parents and forced to bend so that everyone wins? It is degrading to high school coaches but they have to take it. College Coaches not so much and the respect you just earned in the high school coaching community should do wonders for recruiting over the next several years. Welcome to adulthood Mr. Geter. It is a free country and you can say or tweet what you want and that is the great news. The bad news is that there are repercussions for your actions at this level. Actually, if all the athletes went to class, they would have learned that for every action, you will encounter an equal or opposite reaction. Something like that anyway.

Actually, I just read that the reason that the scholarship was pulled was because Mr. Geter did not like reading comments from "anonymous" bloggers. Really folks, if you have something to say, use an identifier. With so many Mr. Anonymous'ers out there, it is impossible to engage in good debate. Personally, I like reading the reaction from folks on here. I don't always agree, ok hardly ever, but I enjoy the give and take.

So to Mr. Geter, I would suggest going to a school that hasn't offered Mr. Rippy and let your actions back up your words. That is what you just heard from Coach Chryst. Compete like hell and then let's talk in a few years. WVU is not the place for you. They do not have room and it is not a good fit unless you think that finishing fourth or fifth each year during your career is cool. I wouldn't twitter negatively about Holgorsen or you will be shown the door very quickly.Frankly, Pitt offers all the local kids the best opportunity for getting to the BCS Bowls each year. It is the best secret out there but our high school coaches don't embrace that. Hopefully Coach Chryst can change the local perception that going to OSU, Michigan, Penn State or Miami is best for their student athletes. It usually isn't. At the end of the day, if you are good enough, the league will find you. They may not find you if you only sniff the field minimally because you have been surrounded by 4 and 5 stars your whole collegiate career.

Mr. Rippy and Mr. Conwell, Arizona is beautiful with real nice scenery on campus. Would love to support the local guys going to Pitt and getting to the BCS, because it is going to happen and soon. We won't get to watch you all develop as men and athletes. The pieces are in place for a run and it's not too late to hop on the bus!

  15. Accosrding to Trib Gabe Roberts has committed to Pitt. 6'4 290 I think was the weight I read. He was offered a few options from Wiscy but no full ride was offered. Pitt offered and I guess he took it. I think this is the type of guy the (new) boys at Pitt like. Room to grow and fill out and create monster out of them!! This may be a good get in two or three years.

  16. Another suggestion ...

If you are on a high profile (or maybe any profile) team, don't EVER read the comments section of blogs or articles. In fact, you probably shouldn't be reading any blogs (except this one).

  18. I live in Gatorland (FLA) and have never heard of anyone in the SEC going after this Marzet Geter, nor have I heard Urban Meyer wants him at OSU, nor Spurrier, and on down the line we go. Just what is the SAT score needed to get into IUP, Clarion or Cal State? (Sto Rox, McKeesrocks ha ha ha........cute lil mini-me wanna be gang bangin' epicenters of nothingness.

    1. I forgot Florida is the Mecca of culture and education in this great land of ours. I highly doubt you even took the SATs and if you did you probably didn't even score high enough to enroll in your local community college let alone any school within the State System of Higher Education. In other words...stultus caudex es!

  19. Rippy is still deciding between Pitt and WVU.

  20. Nice to hear we got an OL commit. Now we need Treyvon Hester and that will be 3 big guys in the last week, with potentially one more (That guy from New Hampshire I think) as a possible. Not bad. Not bad at all..

  21. Time will tell. These guys were Plan C for the top programs. Sometimes that works out and sometimes it doesn't. Usually the latter. If they can get one or two of these late kids to turn out to be a help to the team in the future than that will be good.

  22. Looks like Cristobal to Rutgers...
Cristobal never got a new contract from FIU when Pitt danced with him... still working on it...
    consider him gone!!

  26. Reply to Rkohberger's "[In] addition he tweeted that during the MNC game the LSU QB (who was playing very poorly; "Jordan Jefferson is the New Tino from Pitt."

Dude is obviously brilliant -- smarter than the previous TWO coaching regimes, as well as most of the local print media who somehow were blinded by Tino Sunseri's prowess in practice. Unfortunately, practice doesn't count, games do. TS is absolutely wretched.

A guy this smart -- smart enough to say the king has no clothes, that TS does NOT give Pitt the best chgance to win -- at least deserves an academic scholarship!

    2. MikeN, touche, that was funny.

But let's be honest: if Pitt is stuck with the Cirque du Sunseri for another year, we'll have much Much MUCH bigger problems and misery than some rookie CB pointing out the obvious. Especially if it's true.

Well, obvious to everyone other than Tino's parents, our past two head coaches, and almsot every sports writer/blogger working for the P-G.

      Delete
    3. I realize it is not politically correct to defend Tino, but he was thrown into a system that required skills that he simply does not possess. Tino is not a great QB. Essentially, he makes decisions too slowly. If Tino retains the job (which is a good bet by the way), Chryst will reduce the number of decisions. I believe Tino can manage the situation if he does not have to make too many decisions.

By the way, the OL was confused most of the season and that compounded the problem. Graham tried to run an offense designed for gazelles. Unfortunately he had Clydesdales. The good thing is that Chryst’s offense will look a lot like Wanny’s. He will need some Clydesdales to operate his power run game. PITT’s personnel will match the scheme way better than last year and Tino just may surprise.

    4. MikeN,
Your arguement would be solid -- in fact, it would be mine too -- if Tino did okay under Wanny when running basically the same offense that Chryst will run. Problem is, Tino was terrible under both offenses (well, under pressure to be sure). In fact, I'd contend he was worse last year. And that's business, not personal.

In fact, I cannot think of an offensive scheme in which he would thrive since he was woeful in the spread and woeful the pro-set. Dude just lacks every tool and the football IQ needed to play QB at the D1 level, let alone for a BCS-AQ school.

BTW, it's low fruit to blame the OL. We could sneak the NE Patriots OL onto the field in Pitt uniforms and even they couldn't give dude the weeks he thinks he needs to sit back in the pocket.

Folks may disagree, but that's one thing Todd Graham got right (and I have noooo problem on him pointing that out so as to not lose the team). And Geter was right too.

  27. Chris, was anthony standifer able to get eligible for notre dame? I heard hes down to pitt and boise state. Is this true?

    ReplyDelete
  28. True. He's supposed to visit Pitt on Feb. 10. I don't know if Boise State will wait for him but Pitt surely will.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Notre Dame would not accept his online spanish credit. Therefor their offer was taken away. Now he is down to Pitt and Boise State but according to his twitter account, that visit probably didn't go as well as planned. So let's keep our fingers crossed, and hope Pitt is where this kid wants to be!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Pitt can win with Sunseri if the coaching staff is able to instill some confidence in the kid and not ask him to do things he is physically unable to do. They could also get creative and platoon another QB in and out of the game and of course keep that wildcat in and mix things up a bit. (Trent Dilfer told me so!)
