Pitt looking at California juco

Pitt may be looking to the juco ranks for help and are looking at 6'9" 235 pound Andrew Young from Monterey Peninsula College in CA.  Young is currently averaging around 20 ppg and 20 rpg.  The schools looking at him include Gonzaga, California, Georgetown, Cincinnati, Virginia, and NC State.

Bad grades at Monterey HS and a broken wrist in the second game of his senior season meant Young had to head to junior college, where he is now one of the biggest junior college recruits in the country.  He also has a GPA of 3.8 now.

As for what type of player Young is, he can run the floor with ease and is a good passer for a big man (a requirement for Pitt power forwards).

  1. I believe Young has been in junior college for 3 years and redshirted one do to grades. He played a year at Cabrillo College.

  2. Chris- any reaction to the Birch interview on the Fan? Look, if the kid didn't like it here and wanted to transfer, fine. I also understand it's a free country and you can say what you want to say, but when you start taking shots at your former team I think you open yourself up to any and all criticism, 18 year old kid or not. I mean, who is advising this clown? If I were on the Pitt squad this would fire me up more than anything to make Birch want to eat his words. I honestly think if this team can get a W against L'ville on Saturday things could start to snowball in the right direction. Minus the missed lay-ups and free throws, I thought they played a solid game tonight (i.e., effort, toughness, defense, passing were good enough to win). That being said, it helped that the Cuse didn't press much. Obviously handling a full court press is not one of this team's strong suits, and L'ville will be pressing from the get go.

  3. I normally let a young kid like him slide but I honestly don't think that he has a lot of character. If a kid wants to transfer that's fine, but the way he acted at Pitt, and since leaving, shows he has a long way to go to mature and be a man.

  4. I think the name Khem means "prima donna."

  5. Here is a link to a story on Young.

  6. Would it be possible that our bigs start going harder to the rim and flushing the ball instead of soft and rejected. Hard to make up missed opportunities. That said, the team still plays hard. I think they can come out Sat, having Gameday there, like a team on fire and beat 'Ville. Hopefully Chryst will be there w/ a bunch of recruits to see the great atmosphere. Like I said before, hard to make up missed opportunities.

  7. This kid is emotionally immature and morally bankrupt.

  8. Chris-If I am not mistaken, when Birch left the team he did not say anything at all. A few of the Pitt players were quoted as saying he was soft and perhaps cried a little bit. Don't you think he was just getting back at a few of his ex teammates who felt the need to go public. I am not defending Birch but I think the current Pitt players should have said nothing and let the coach be the spokesperson(but i Know that kids will be kids)!

  9. Yeah well not only did he take shots at teammates he took a shot at Dixon

  10. Chris-do you know why Malcolm Gilbert has not been given a chance to step in? Previously he has shown some real promise...why not put him in the rotation - I do not get it. Also, regarding football any updates on the last 2 coaching spots that are open - is Bobby Engram the new WR coach? Really enjoy reading your blog - keep up the great work!

  11. You have to assume no WR coach or DL coach has been named because they are still coaching. Have to assume Engram is one since he lives in Murrysville.

  12. Chris - If you were to take an educated guess, who are a few of the remaining football recruits that Pitt has a good chance of landing?

  13. I have no clue. I think Holtz could be one of them. They smartly want Bradley as a LB because like I said before, he's not fast enough or athletic enough for safety, but that may cost them him. I can see Rippy and Cox going elsewhere since they seem adamant on doing that. Denman is a possibility but with Wisconsin having the last chance they are going to try to guilt him into not switching. Pankey could end up at WVU. So, bottom line, a lot of things are still up in the air.

  14. Can this JUCO guy suit up this week? We really need him. lol

  15. Chris, i still havnt heard anything about denmans visit. Since you said pitt has a chance foes that mean he enjoyed it?

    ReplyDelete
  16. He isn't talking. From what I hear, he liked it but still plans to visit Wisconsin this week.

  17. Ok thanks chris. Do you think pitt has a good chance at this andrew young? Adams at the 4 and young at the 5 sounds pretty darn good

    ReplyDelete
  18. It would be the opposite. Adams would be the 5 and Young would be the 4. But it's a long way to go with him. Not even sure if Pitt wants him yet. They are just watching him for now. But they have a gap at the 4 with Birch leaving so they are just looking if they can fill that gap with another 4. But it's too early to know. He has a lot of suitors and he lives in CA so it's a long shot for now.

  19. Speaking of players from California (except football, not hoops):

Some breaking news here in Colorado, (per today's Denver Post)CSU's 2-year sophomore and starting QB Pete Thomas asked to be released from his scholarship in order to transfer. He wants to pick a new school by LOI day.

Pitt should take a serious look at this kid, he's the real deal: 6'-5 and a plus arm. Before you roll your eyes because it's CSU and his numbers there, Pete was their entire team (the Rams were kinda the anti-Pitt: all QB and little else...).

Can you pass this along to whomever is acting as Pitt's recruiting coordinator under the Chryst regime? I'd do it myself (and have in the past), but I have no idea who that is.

  20. I talked about Thomas on twitter the other day and Pitt is one of the schools he's looking at. Pitt already knows about him. But he says he's going to wait until the spring to see what depth chart looks like for the various teams he's looking at. Until he actually visits Pitt he's a long shot so I didn't write about him in here yet. But he's worth keeping an eye on. He was a 4 star QB that originally was committed to Arizona State so he definitely has more talent than your average Colorado State QB.

  21. Chris, ive been reading about steven adams. It seems to me that pitt fans are very delusional. Articles have been saying that adams is off to a slow start and commenters are saying that hes a bust bdcause of his second game where he only had 4 points 5 rebounds and a few blocks/assts. this is making me mad for a few reasons: 1) hes only been with his team for 2 weeks where as other kids have been with theirs for entire summers. 2) in that second game he hit his head diving after a ball, something pitt fans should appreciate, and barely played in rhe first half. 3) as you said he had 23 points 10 rebounds and 3 blocks in his first game. Can you talk some sense into people!!!!?????

    ReplyDelete
  22. What can I say? Some people are idiots. Adams is not going to average 20 ppg and 10 rpg in his one year but who said he was? When you are a talented 7 footer you can average 10 ppg and 8 rpg and make a HUGE impact on a team. A big, talented player like that makes every other player on the team significantly better because he has a ripple effect for everybody on the floor.

  23. Chris, ive also read something written by something Givony that adams cant score without guards creating for him and that he will NOT be what pitt fans are hoping for right away. Do you buy that? From what ive seen on video adams has a ton of post moves and finishes well

    1. PK Smizik linked the negative article, but then titled it himself, Adams off to slow start. I emailed him to tell him about the other two games and some of the other comments made on him. Such as Nerlens Noel calling him the best player he has EVER played against. I also sent him links to you tube videos of the kid. He is tremendous and looks much more college ready than Dante or Khem (which is sad because he has played basketball for a shorter period of time, but that is US basketball, foreign players tend to have much more skill at least offensively at this point). Anyways Smizik said he'd post some of the new stuff and he did change the title of his blog post to mixed reviews instead of slow start.

  24. Smizik is a tool. always has been and always will be. no talent hack. if he knew what he was talking about it would be the first time. Adams is the real deal and if folks think he isn't they are touched in the head.

  25. Chris, penn state offered chad voytik. Do you see him switching?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Definitely not. I was laughing about it on twitter last night.

  27. Yea today i saw on pitt blather that he rejected it as soon as he got the call. Thats comforting to know he has that kind of loyalty

  28. Here are more rumors about bostad leaving.

    http://espn.go.com/chicago/nfl/story/_/id/7479622/chicago-bears-narrow-search-offensive-line-coach

"But a source said Bostad would have Chryst's blessing should the offensive coordinator choose to join the Chicago Bears."

  29. He's also worked with Carimi the bears 1st rd pick from last year.

  30. According to Scout.com, looks like JC-OT Tavon Rooks is gone, verballed to K-State. Nuts!

Frankly, with our new (and hopefully still...) OL coach, I'm a little surprised at that one. WVU wouldn't have surprised me, but K-State does.

    ReplyDelete
  31. You asked me last week about Rooks and I told you that he already committed to Kansas State. Or somebody did.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Rooks committed as soon as graham left. I thought that was old news

    ReplyDelete
  33. I see Pitt lost another 3-star commit today. Who decommitted? This class is slowly falling apart. Still waiting for Chryst to get his first decent commit.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I heard the Javonte (sp?) Pitts didn't qualify, so Rivals removed his name as a commit.

There's talk of Corey Jones looking around; I think Scout has moved him to soft verbal status.

  35. Chris, does pitt really have any chance at demetrious cox? Ive heard he set an official to pitt next weekend. Is that true?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Sure, they have a chance. But it's hard to build a relationship when Pitt has a few weeks and their competitor's have a year or more.

  37. i am hoping this staff can pull in a few more recruits here in the next few days. not very confident that they will but i'm hoping for the best.
