Bob Bostad to Tampa Bay Bucs according to reports

Pitt has lost their offensive line guru to the Tampa Bucs, according to FoxSports.com.  Slow recruiting and some suspect hiring of coaches were bad enough but the loss of Bostad would be devastating.

  1. Could you imagine a year when nobody has to report a loss of a coach? Hell, id take a month

  2. Chryst being named head coach will go down in the long line of bad hires for Pitt.

The fact that Pitt even went after Haygood to begin with speaks volumes - trying to get a coach on the absolute cheap - then damage control with the Graham hire - now, we get an assistant from Wisconsin as a head coach.

Pitt will be mediocre at best under Chryst - if anyone disagrees, you're just wrong.

Even thinking about hiring a guy with Hawaii connections...absolutely crazy.

This program is in shambles and we're going to get whomped in the ACC.

A blind man (Steve Pederson) should have seen this about Chryst - we should have kept Wannstedt and hired a great OC - imo, we had everything in place - he could recruit and was great for Pitt - just needed to get out of the dark ages offensively.

    Now, here we are.

    Great.

    1. Give Chryst a chance ZM....until some coach comes in here and establishes a sucessfull program for at least a few years, Pitt will not be a marquee destination spot for either players or coaches until that happens.

That's just the way it is....no matter who they hire.

  4. I don't know why people worry so much about Bostad. Wasn't able to recruit that well so far. Put Rudolph on the O-line(he had to learn something while at Wisconsin w/ Bostad) and have Chryst call plays like he was going to do anyway. Now all Chryst has to do is hire a RB and QB coach. Oh I forgot, he is to busy passing out offers to recruits to hire any coaches.

    ReplyDelete
  5. People worry because any great OL they would get would be because of Bostad. I doubt they have any chance for Kugler now.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I have to ask why. He turned down the cowboys when he was just an ol coach, he turned down the bears, but now hes going to tampa bay? That makes no sense to me. Are we 100% sure hes leaving?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Chris, what would you think of geep chryst as pitts oc? I think you have to give him a ton of credit for alex smith, move hueber to ol coach.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Wasn't Rudolph the great recruiter in this staff, If they can fill the other two positions w/ great recruiters and not someone from Hawaii we should be in good shape

    1. Aside from the fact that his prior employer (UCLA) didn't want him, that he has no ties to football in the east, and that there are plenty of good former college DLs, then sure, there's absolutely nothing wrong with him.

  10. Chryst defenders - can we finally admit that if this report is true, that the first few months of the Chryst era have been a disaster?

This administration has done a fantastic job elevating Pitt as an academic institution, but the football program continues to be an embarrassment.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I would think that if Geep wanted to do it he would have been the first one asked.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I say even if this is not true, FIRE Bostad right now! He should show some commitment to this new job that he took on at Pitt. He shouldn't make a statement saying he's at Pitt for the long haul and get his name out of the media. Since he hasn't, can his butt!

Disgusted with the entire Pitt program right now!

  13. Hurriguake, you're right. I shouldn't take shots at any of the staff until it plays out. It just seems easy to be a pessimist because that is what I've been trained to do as a Pitt fan since childhood. But as I said previously, if this report is true, Chryst will have a chance to make two more hires. It may be late in the game, but if Chryst makes two strong hires by maybe going out of his comfort zone, this staff will still be solid.

  14. They took his bio off of the official site so he's definitely gone.

  15. All i know is, chrysts hires must be slam dunks in recruiting and good coaches all around.

  16. Bostad seemed to be a good idea at the time. Life contains no guarantees. Pitt has been mired in mediocrity for many many years, yet we still support. Hail to Pitt.

  17. At least it didn't happen before signing day.....when it rains it's pours for Pitt...

  18. The past 18 months as a Pitt fan has been awful. Football team can't catch a break, Basketball team fell apart.

The only saving grace is getting out of the Big East before it completely fell apart.

  19. Atleast we know what one of the coaches has been doing the past month. He was interviewing for NFL jobs instead of recruiting. Now if we only now what the rest of the staff is doing.

  20. I don't understand why Bostad would come here for a "promotion" to OC, then seemingly look for the first train out of town to be an NFL line coach. Especially since he and Chyrst are supposed to be so tight.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Chryst just announced that Joe Rudolph is the new OC and Jim Hueber is the OLC.

  23. I am just as suspicious of this report as I was of the report that Bostad was leaving for the Bears. He is a friend of Chryst, so why would he screw him over like this? The first report didn't make sense and neither does this one.

  26. Chryst was calling the offensive plays anyway, even though Bostad was the OC.

Now we need a QB coach and RB coach. What's Walt Harris doing?

    ReplyDelete

    1. It's all about getting offensive limemen to come to Pitt. Chryst's whole offense is build around a great OL, and players sign because of the coaching staff as well as the school.

  27. Walt Harris is one of the best QB coaches in the country, but I doubt he would take an assistant job at Pitt when he used to be the coach there. Seriously doubt.

  28. Lets face it, this season is a waste. Chryst will have a learning curve, we have Tino, the schedule is going to be a joke an nobody will go to the games. We need a 2-3 year plan to get this program back where it needs to be. There going to give Paul every chance to be successful here, if not the AD is also going to be gone.

  29. Do you think this is the reason for the slow start to recruiting? If Chryst new that Bostad was itching for the NFL, any recruiting to this point selling Bostad would be out the door anyways.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Chris, will this have any effect on zaire or fosters recruitment? I dont see why it would

    ReplyDelete
  31. This is terrible news. Pitt isn't going to win another game now without Bob Bostad as the OL coach. They will never get another OL. Forget Kugler, forget any 4 or 3 star OL coming now. Pitt won't get one OL recruit next year. Seriously they should just shut down the program and replace it with a women's lacrosse program

    Doom and Gloom

    ReplyDelete
  32. This might answer why some of the recruiting was slow. If Chryst knew that Bostad was flirting with the NFL, why put him front and center for recruiting? If Bostad was the stud coach everyone claims, then Chryst probably figured it was worth the risk to bring him in and see if he would stick.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I can see Bostad going to Chicago... (near Wisky).
But why would he go to Tampa Bay and Schiano??
Anyway, when the Chicago rumors were going about Bostad... it was obvious that Chyrst figured Bostad would be here a year as Hueber's background is ALL OLine... never coach TE's. Pitt now needs QB coach, RB coach, TE coach..

It is hard for me to believe TB position coach is paid more than Pitt OC!!! Was Pederson tight with the budget for assistants with Chyrst??

by the way.. Kiss 2013 recruiting class good bye!!! Therefore, it will take Pitt at least 3 years to recover to be decent (8-4 regular season is decent in my opinion). This year may be a powderpuff schedule so I wouldn't count that.

    4. I don't think so...
Never heard of a OC going to NFL for position coach...
It all depends upon bugdet Pederson gave Chryst for assistant coaches... that could be the problem.
      Pitt OC should be 350-400K!!!!
      I said should be...
NFL Position coaches vary.... but 200-400K.
NFL assistant HC is about 500,000....
NFL OC and DC are 600-1million.

    5. Where I would question it is in the same vein as the contract offered Graham. Graham's buyout, was (I believe) a measly $1 million. That's peanuts.

I would like to know Bostad's buyout. DK what is typical, but you should have a decent sized buyout in year one, at the very least. Now, if an NFL team really wants a college assistant, they will pay. But, the school losing a coach after one year or less, should get some good financial consideration out of it.

Regardless, I would agree with the general point that Pitt and Pederson are about as incompetent as you can get when it comes to contracts.

  34. I would really like Pitt to take a run at Teryl Austin for recruiting purposes and to round him out as a potential head coach. He has the defensive pedigree and by placing him on the offensive side of the ball and letting him earn his stripes for a couple of years, Pitt will secure a recruiting advantage in our market. He would then be in a position for a head coaching gig because of his versatility to coach on both sides of the ball.

Austin will be able to recruit against Urban "sick leave" Meyers because he was his defensive coordinator and knows the weaknesses of his bs that he feeds recruits. I would offer him a running back coach position and for all you doomers and gloomers out there, I only ask you this. Who watches more offensive film of running backs? A defensive coordinator or a running back coach? The answer is a D Coordinator. I think he would be extremely serviceable in that position and it would take our recruiting to new heights. The money is there with the departure of Bostad, now go and get him.

    spederson@athletics.pitt.edu
    eborghetti@athletics.pitt.edu

If Bostad left for a higher salary.. that is a Pederson issue regarding budget for assistants.
Should the contracts have buyouts for OC & DC... that is a Pederson issue!!! I think OC & DC should have $100,000 buyouts.
If you think Pitt football recruiting is lackluster thus far... tell Pederson to give Chryst and crew a kick in the a$$.
And please tell EJ to prep Chryst for the media... his bumbling, anal, introverted style isn't cutting it with me anymore... don't know about you... but he clearly lacks leadership!!!

    1. There should be a buyout for all positions, which could be waived. For HC, OC, or DC, the buyouts should be 100-150% of salary for year one and then fall each year into the contract. It not only promotes stability, but is a test for the potential hire. Any candidate who balks -- you don't want.

And ... the poachers have to know that there is a price for poaching Pitt.

  42. LOL, Joe D was talking about cyber bullying and upset over mom jokes on another post...stolen lunch money would explain a lot.

I know, as Pitt fans, we've been through hell but let the dude get a year under his belt before running him out of town. Was Bostad an important piece - yes, because of his OL experience. In reality, we just lost our OC who wasn't going to be calling plays. It's frustrating but by no means the end of the world. A big reason for the slow start in recruiting probably has to do with Bostad's situation. I'm sure Chryst has known he was gunning for the NFL - probably why Wisconsin didn't put up much a fight.

Besides, from what I hear, Rudolph is big on camps. He may want to see some of these kids in person at his camps before offers start flying. I'm fine with the methodical approach if it get results. As Dokish, who has gone out of his way to point out, has said all that matters is who ends up with Pitt in the end. You may be skeptical, which is understandable, but you also have no idea what their game plan is.

Pitt will be fine if the fans can be patient. I understand patience is a lot to ask - we're going on 30 years of mediocrity after all...but we're talking about a 3rd coach in 3 seasons. Like it or not, Pitt is in a rebuilding phase and you don't rebuild programs stuck in a rut for 30 years over night. Let the man (Chryst) get his house in order before ripping it apart.

    1. Very frustrating to see what is going on...
Chryst may be a good x&o OC... but he lacks leadership.

With all that has gone on at Pitt, Chryst should not have brought Bostad to the staff knowing he wanted an NFL job.... or at least get 1 year out of him by putting in a buyout clause.
However, when the Bears were sniffing Bostad... you can clearly see why he had Hueber as TE coach.. Hueber has no TE coaching experience.
Don't know if Rudolph will be a good OC but at least he will be coaching the TE and NOT QB.

At this point... there is a lack of leadership by Chryst...
from what I see in recruiting...
from what I see in coaching hires... Bostad, the DL coach, the former RB coach..
I think he is over his head.
I now see why many passed over Chryst for HC..

  46. Chryst way of recruiting is to be sincere. I said on a post that i thought it would take a couple of years for Chryst to understand what it takes to recruit. One guy got on me for that comment. I think recruits will see he is a sincere guy, but that does not mean there are not alot of fake sincere guys out there who can recruit. I think Chryst will be a great coach at game plans and knowing where to hurt teams at. I think he will do a good job of putting players where they can do well. Recruiting is going to take a while, not because he cannot recruit, but because coache's like Meyer will say anything to get who they want and close their eyes on things that they know are happening.

I wanted him as HC over Christobal...

The stats that I provided on OSU and Michigan as well as Rutgers and WVU and Pitt ARE FACTS!!! How does Pitt compare to it's competition... TERRIBLE.

But, he clearly is clueless of what it takes to recruit... Hoke and Meyer know recruiting...
Guess what, there are already 13 recruits that OSU and Michigan have that Pitt has NO chance for!!!

Enough with the excuses... no crystal ball... everyone was a HC once... BS... he needs a kick in the a$$.

Recruiting is akin to sales and marketing... you have competitors, etc..
OSU and Michigan are getting premium price product!!!
and have gobbled up the market share in Ohio for premium shelf space..

The fact of the matter is... Chryst has been doing his job for the last 7 weeks... how is he doing!!!
How is he doing in the recruiting??
How is he doing in attracting and retaining coaches??
Really, what else should he be doing??

  60. I don't know if Chryst is doing a good or bad job at the moment. I agree with you on the sales part of recruiting but the sales(con) job Graham did didn't work either. Some kids need the high pressure sales pitch others don't respond well to it. 7 weeks in I am not ready to pass judgement that he isn't doing his job. I will wait until he has a couple seasons in and then decide. Wanny was a great recruiter but didn't get a a BE championship but we did win the most players in trouble award. Anyway I am getting a headache listening to the so called experts( not just you Joe as everyone is entitled to their own opion) who most of the time have no clue and I am at least as qualified as most who post.

And I was advocating for him to leave!!!
I think its a budget issue with assistant coaches salarys if we can't retain them. Look what FSU did to keep Stoops!! If Pitt is going to play in the ACC, they need to be competitive with the ACC salaries... I doubt that they are!!

    6. I wish Wannstedt would have been retained. Two good recruiting classes would be in the books had he stayed. Darius Hamilton and Spence would be joining the team for 2012.

He was the first coach since Sherrill left to win 10 games in a season.

Pitt has been mediocre for quite some time. Changing coaches so often in that span in an attempt to reach an elite status in college football has gotten the program NOWHERE.

Wannstedt had his flaws, but he was fixing the problems that plagued the 2010 team. There were bigger cornerbacks and better linebackers coming into the program. I'm not sure where the O-line was headed though under Wannstedt. I don't remember too many big names being recruited by Pitt in the 2011 class.

The 2012 team would have been so much fun to watch just because of the defensive line. Who knows where the Panthers are heading under Chryst. Hopefully he can stick around and be successful for 10 seasons.

It's real easy to figure out who you want to offer that are 4-5 star... the 3 star take more work.. There should be at least 50 offers made to date!!

    8. pk, agreed. Dokish, he may be consistent but it's consistently irrational and what Zeise refers to as the "lunatic fringe".

Letting Wanny go was Pitt's first step in the right direction since Harris left. Graham was a miss but at least Pitt had the balls to take a flier on him. I was all for Cristobal b/c I thought it would have been a hire in the same vein as Graham - a swing for the fences. Pitt went conservative with Chryst and I just have to accept that Chryst's moves will be more deliberate than a more aggressive, high risk coach.

Chryst has a proven record with his offense and has been tutored by some pretty great coaches. I'll reserve judgement on him until I see his product on the field. As Dokish has pointed out, Wisconsin has done pretty well with inferior recruits - based on classification anyways - than Pitt.

My point is, even though I wanted the other coach to get hired I'm still going to give Chryst a chance. To do otherwise, you come off as a spoiled brat who has to get his way. Relax, support the team and if Chryst is not the future of the program you will know soon enough.

    10. Do over for the firing. That clearly was a mistake considering that they did not have a better candidate than Wanny. Then again if they didn't fire him, what would we talk about on these blogs?

  66. The Pitt football program is in shambles. What's interesting is that in two years, when Nordenberg retires and Peterson is either let go or leaves with him, their legacy towards the football program will be Heinz Field, one BCS blowout loss and two Big East co-championships. The basketball legacy will be a considerable upgrade and the Pederson Center, but only one elite-8. Compare that with WVU's athletic record since 1996. Bringing a program out of the ashes when it shouldn't have been there in the first place is only mediocre in my book. I'm not impressed, and fell rather let-down by the situation.

    2. Just the facts...
      I can't change the facts..
You may not like the facts...
so, kill the messanger.. yeh right.
I have yet to see anyone point to anything Chryst has done well.
Perhaps you don't understand how important the 2013 class is to the future in the ACC. I'm tired of seeing 6-6... and 3 of the wins are from powderpuff teams.
btw.. I initially like the Graham hire... bit my tongue through spring and summer.. then after the 1st game wanted him gone... he was bad for the university, etc.. I was the one that started calling him a snake oil salesmen before anyone.
Chryst needs a kick in the a$$... and that is a Pederson issue.
If Chryst needs a bigger budget for assistants to attract and retain good assistants, that is a Pederson issue... but Chryst needs to demand more money like Graham did.
If Pitt wants to be competitive in football and put a decent product on the field... they need to start investing in the program... I hate to see the 2013 season in the ACC...

      I read the trib article...
now he is saying the "n-word" was the racial slur...
      whatever...
      ridiculous...
problem is, the blacks call themselves the "n-word" all the time... via tweets, etc.. but I guess that is ok??
I bet Mom is the one that insighted it with her son... added fuel to the fire.
jtp... your comment.. if true they deserved what they got... well then Alonzo should go to jail for aggravated assault and be sued civilly.

I and others believe the "race card" is being played because this took a day to come out and nothing of the sort was mentioned the day of the incident.
What are you appaulled with Bones??
the double standard of the "n-word"... and trust me, I don't like that word being used... but it is what it is!!! That is a fact!!

And should Alonzo go to jail..
absolutely!! it is called aggravated assault!!

    5. joe, what you say are not facts!! you say chryst doesnt get recruiting-are you in his head? do you know everything he does? who he talks to? how he goes about coaching? answer: you know none of the above. its is NOT a fact that hes a failure after two freaking months. other than inoke, this was a great staff. losing bostad hurts, but whos to say the qb and rb coaches he hires arent great coaches too? whos to say they arent great recruiters? man at least wait until the season is over to irrationally accuse him of faults that havent been proved yet.

      Pitt has made 28 offers...
others have made 60-120 offers thus far...
From the recruiting perspective... if I had to give Chryst a grade so far...
      it would be an "F"..

  68. Joe D, you may be wildly optimistic saying "Pitt should be grateful they are not going to the ACC in 2012". We may not have as much talent in a couple of years. At this time we have mostly players that were recruited by Wannstedt and Graham. In the future we may just have the few guys who respond to "just offer" and perhaps those who answer an ad in the Pitt News.

"joe d optimistic"... see, thats clearly false. give me a break

  69. pk, I don't claim to be, I have been a Pitt fan since I was a little boy and I have two degrees from Pitt. I am sick and tired to losing. Pitt has had below average teams since before you were even born. I am not being pessimistic, I am just telling the truth and you can't handle the truth. I believe that this coach can be successful, he knows the x's and o's but he has to get out of his comfort zone both in hiring staff and in recruiting. Pitt has a lot to sell as a university and as a football program. He just needs to get out and do it.

    2. i agree with those points, but thats not at all how you came off in that previous post. and what have i said that tells you that i cant handle thye truth, that i dont want to crucify a coach before the ink on his contract is dry? or that i think its irrational to cut and manipulate two words from an entire presser to make the guy look bad?

      Delete
    3. One thing that is necessary for a football team to be successful is to be very aggressive in recruiting every year. When taking over a program a new coach has to be hyper-aggressive. It takes a lot of effort. So far in the effort department Chyrst is being smoked by Meyer, Hoke and the likes of wvu, Rutgers and Cincinnati. From your posts it seems that you are of the opinion that Chryst can just "coach up" whoever he has and win. It doesn't work. Ask Walt Harris who was at least a pretty good offensive coach but not much of a recruiter so he didn't win. You also have to hire a good staff and be good at coaching up the talent you have. Look at Wanny, a pretty good recruiter who didn't get the most out of the talent that he had so he didn't win. The "just offer" is just shorthand to portray what appears to be a lazy attitude about recruiting on Chryst's part. Actually, from what I have seen, Chryst seems to have a pleasant personality. He just needs to talk to a lot of recruits.

    4. i kind of agree. ive said on this blog that i think the staff needs to move faster in terms of recruiting. obviously they have some sort of plan, though. the same plan that they had at wisconsin. all im saying is the incessant criticism isnt called for at this point.

  73. Hi Chris,

    Great work, as always.

Serious question: knowing that Stevie-P is a major micro-manager -- which in this case could be a good thing -- do you think it's time for him and our shiny new head coach to meet to reset the direction of the program since his hire (not good, to be kind...)? Maybe they have already? Or too soon?

Let's be honest enough to admit that the trend is disconcerting at best, alarming at worst. I haven't had this much dread this early in a new coach's regime since Foge Fazio.

    1. Hiring assistants with no sense as to what good they'd be in harvesting recruits. "X&Os first & foremost" is an NFL mindset that has nooooo place in CFB. If Chryst knows this, he sure doesn't show it.

    2. It's hard to believe Bostad -- reported to be Chryst's friend? -- left just for a few more $$.

    3. Chryst inherited a class rated in the top 25, delivered one in the mid-40s. And it wouldda been worse but for the heroic efforts of Voytik as self-elected recruiting coordinator.

If he was selling cars instead of our school, his sales mamager would have called him into the office just for that.

    4. His clueless "we just offer" comment would have made my head explode as AD (his boss...). I still hope that was taken outta context; a guy with that much experience in CFB -- even tho he just watched others do the recruiting at Wiscy -- can't be that clueless ... can he?

Continuing with the car-sales theme, the equivalent wouldda been "... we just open the doors..." and then sit on our kiesters in our office and wait for the avalanche of customers to rush the doors. How well would THAT work?

Put it this way: schools like 'Bama and Texas -- the gold standard of recruiters -- spend million$$ on recruiting. If the "we just offer" approach worked well enough, then everybody would do it.

I'm officially worried that we made a bad hire. I keep looking for a glimmer of hope that doesn't appear to be coming...
