Panthers land SG Chris Jones

As I suspected would happen once they offered, 6'5" SG Chris Jones of (Teaneck (HS) NJ has committed to the Panthers for the class of 2012.  He joins 7'0" center Steven Adams and 6'3" PG James Robinson in the class.

Jones is not an elite athlete, but he's a good athlete who has great length, and can shoot, pass, and defend.  Most of all, he is one of those players that has a certain kind of "it" factor in that he's a winner, he's smart, and he usually makes the right play at the right time.

Jones was not considered a high major prospect entering the season but he's been excellent all year for Teaneck, who are currently 27-0.

  1. Dokish I have a couple questions.

1 does they mean wright could possibly transfer along with epps...does it increase the chances?

2 do u think Dixon will redshirt jones cause I hope not, what's the point of bringing in players and have them sit out a year unless they aren't very good like a cam wright

  2. 1. I have no idea what's in his head so there's always a chance that he sees a lot of similar players and decides to leave, but I don't think Dixon would encourage him.

    2. I think as long as he proves he can play, he will, but there are a lot of wing players in the 6'5" range all of a sudden. If they're all better than him Dixon may feel it's pointless to waste a year.

  3. chris do you think dixon missed jaylyn bond at all? he got some minutes for texas this year. I don't know his numbers but seemed like a decent player from watching on tv

    1. Bond didn't have the right attitude to play for Pitt. The expectations of him and his entourage were ridiculous.

    2. From what I've seen, Bond saw a lot more time early in the season, but I've hardly seen him on the floor recently when watching Texas.

  5. Slightly off-topic, but how does Durand Johnson appear to be developing/figuring in on the future of this program? It appears that he was very highly sought-after, so he must have some talent. Could he figure in to an improving team next year?

  6. Although Pitt really needs another PF on the roster... I think this move is to send a signal to push someone out. But then again, it's kinda late to find a quality PF.

  7. I think pitt needs to oversign by 1 and get a good pf. Sg and pf needed huge upgrades. I think we got a good one in jones now lets get a good pf

  8. Based on what I read, I like getting Jones - seems to have some good upside and is a great kid. Actually, what's maybe more important (after watching Gibbs ruin the team with his attitude this year along with Birch pulling his Houdini act) is that all three kids of this class seem like not only good players, but good kids who will take coaching well and represent the university well.

I was hoping they send Epps on his way but after thinking about it, the only way I see that happening is if they can get a commitment from Keane. For some reason, Coach Dixon doesn't see John Johnson as an option at PG, and if for some reasons Woodall or Robinson go down next year, you have no backup options if you send Epps out and bring in a PF for example. I would assume Keane has more upside than Epps (not exactly a big stretch there) and so if they can get him, they'll overrecruit. Otherwise, I think they'll stick with what they have. I don't see Wright being sent on his way unless they can pull someone in that's a top 50 guy and I don't think they're recruiting any of those.

  9. The problem next year is going to be at the 4 (PF) position.

They have 4 players (Adams, Gilbert, Zanna, Taylor) who primarily played the 5 (Center).. very little game experience at the 4.

Dixon should sit Robinson and Gibbs and play the bench to get ready for next year. Gibbs has been a cancer to the team this year.
Dixon should try to get Taylor and Zanna playing time at the 4 this season!!! heck, even put both of them out there!!

    ReplyDelete
  10. We probably do need another 4 with Zanna but I think Patterson and Taylor could play there if need be. My ideal lineup would be Woodall-Moore-Patterson-Zanna-Adams but something tells me Dixon will get Wright in there somehow and Patterson and Moore still fighting over minutes.

I would never had said this before this year but gibbs and Robinson leaving are good things for Pitt. Poor attitudes and no heart or leadership.

Anon - "Poor attitudes and no heart or leadership" describe Gibbs to a T, and he shouldn't even see the floor for the rest of the season. But Nas is a different story. While I can't stand watching him try and play the 4 spot at 6'5" with bad knees and horrible FT shooting, you can't say the kid has no heart or a bad attitude...in fact, that may be ALL he has! It sure can't be his plethora of skills that keep him in the starting lineup.

I do agree that we should start looking toward next year though, and get Zanna and Taylor some time at the PF position, and maybe give Gilbert some time at center. Might as well play Nas at center as he couldn't be any less effective there than at the PF spot.

  11. I agree that it's time to get Zanna and Taylor work at the 4 this year. If I was Dixon I'd start Gilbert at the 5 from here on out this season. Get him some good work, especially in the BE Tourney.

Next year you start Adams at the 5, with Gilbert off the bench. *(In my opinion, Gilbert has done great this year as a spot player and will benefit from playing against Adams every day.) You have Zanna and Tayler at the 4, splitting time based on who is having a better day (cuz they are both inconsistent). You have Moore and Patterson at the three and you use Woodall at the 1, with Robinson as back up. The real problem in my mind is the 2 guard, Pitt has no natural 2 on the roster for next year. Hell, I might even put Moore at the 2, just to keep his athleticism on the floor.

  12. Sorry, I should have added that yes, we have the new recruit as a shooting guard, but I can't see Dixon starting two Freshman...but in truth Epps, Wright and John Johnson are all terrible disappointments so maybe Dixon will break his trend of placing age above talent...

  13. I saw Sheldon Jeter play last week & he has a huge upside. At 6-8, getting stronger & he can shoot the 3 pointer, I think Pitt needs to take him. He's in our backyard.

  14. Who else offered Chris Jones?

    1. Check your sources again. Idiot.

  15. I think Jeter would be worth a shot too as a potential four man who could shoot, but the problem is they don't have any scholarships. Yes, it makes complete sense to get rid of Epps who has no future here, but I don't think Dixon will do that because it only leaves him two point guards for next year (and only one for the following year). Unless he plans on switching JJ to point (which actually makes sense) I don't think he'll get rid of Epps unless he has a commitment from another point guard to replace him. Just my opinion.

    1. Does anyone remember when Epps committed as I believe a soph.
He was supposed to be the Second Coming. Just goes to show how recruiting isn't an exact science.

    2. Two PGs for the year is good. As for the following year, there's always Kaza Keane as a possibility.

    3. keane reclassified to 2012

    4. I know, I meant that there is no worry for the following year because Keane would be there with Robinson so there would still be two PGs.

  16. glaring weakness at the 4 position. Look for a pf from juco class and send Epps packing.

  17. Wow... nobody offered Jones!!!
    smh...
why not Jeter!!! Jeter is more of a 3...
Jones is not a PG... doesn't play like a 2... plays more like a 3...
Just because he is a high scorer in HS doesn't mean much. What AAU team was he on?

    1. The film I saw was HS film...
Jones plays for AAU club Playaz... one of the top AAU clubs in the nation... playing on a loaded team (probably a reserve on that team).

  19. Quote from LFBALLONHOOPS.COM:
It still amazes me that people do not see and understand what more and more high major D1 Head Coaches see in Chris Jones. These Coaches from some very high level programs see the same Chris I see. The Chris who can shoot, run, jump, defend, and finish. This is not a late bloomer talent wise. It is a late bloomer confidence wise only because that was the only ingredient missing. Funny thing is as I read the Pitt Rivals board and a few fans are questioning Chris based on him not being listed as a top 100 type player.

As I said there and I say here, people doing those rankings always get it wrong after the initial top 25-30 kids. many of the people ranking never even played or coached the game we love. Yet there they are at games with pens in hand ranking. Funny stuff! Even the great Tom Konchalski got it wrong when he listed Mike O'Koran as a D3 recruit yet he starred at North Carolina and with the NJ Nets. How about current players? Ever heard of Jeremy Lamb? You know him! The great player at UConn who was not even a top 150 player coming out of High School according to most services. Well, Chris Jones just might be that next Jeremy which might be the reason UConn is recruiting him. I am sure glad Jamie Dixon makes up his own mind!

    1. Not really...
      It's the Playaz connection...
Lot's of Pitt players that came out of NJ's Playaz AAU... so Dixon relies upon that.
Whether they are good in the future is anyone's guess.. Woodall and Epps played under Playaz.

    2. Missing the point. This kid has had a very good all around game. He just lacked confidence in himself up until this year. That's why he is blowing up in his senior year. He finally started to believe in the talent he always had. By every account he's a two that can play the swing. Better handles than J.J. Moore. As for him choosing Pitt, he's already stated he felt a comfort level with Brandon since he is also from Jersey.

    3. Brandon Knight was one of the original Playaz!!!
      Look up your history...
There is a connection of Pitt/Knight to Playaz...

      http://playazbasketball.org/index.html

They do have a history of getting most if not all D-1 ships... and a lot went to the NBA!!!

    4. Again, missed the point. Are you really that obtuse??? Oh, and, thanks for the history lesson, but, i know it all to well. Grew up in North Jersey. Followed that b-ball club when they were Pat Cats. Why are you always trying to spew trivial rhetoric? As for why Chris Jones chose Pitt,my statement came straight from the players comments-FACT. Yours, mere speculation.

  20. Chris,
How many Pitt players will get drafted in NFL??
    Is so, which round???

Frankly, I don't think any did well... but I think Lindsey will get drafted ahead of Nix...
Alecih and Reed will not get drafted at all... Alecih didn't do well at any event... and Reed was slow, slow, slow.

  24. Chris dokish: it seems like pitts keeping jeter hanging because they know he will commit if they offer and while doing so theyre recruiting anybody else that could play the 4 for them. Is that whats going on? I think either sampson or jeter would be good additions at the pf
