Panthers land Zeigler
Jamie Dixon finally gets his big time shooting guard as Central Michigan transfer Trey Zeigler has decided to transfer to the Panthers. The 6'5" Zeigler, once one of the top 30 prospects in the nation, will have two years of eligibility remaining. He has petitioned the NCAA to play immediately since his father, Ernie, the Central Michigan when he committed, recently got fired. Duke also offered Zeigler so it's quite a coup for the Panthers.

His father is saying he is going to sit a year, per espn
ReplyDeleteDamn, Jamie. Way to go!
ReplyDeleteKatz says sitting a year, but Tray has been quoted otherwise.

Chris,
ReplyDeleteAre they still going after Goodman? If so, who would they let go if he happened to commit? Wright seems like the obvious choice, but would John Johnson be on that list too?
Goodman seems like he would be worth getting rid of someone else, especially since they now have a huge logjam at the 2-3 positions with JJM, Lamar, Durand Johnson, Chris Jones, Zeigler, Wright and very little depth inside after next year when Taylor and likely Adams will be gone.
It's good to hear good news! Let's hope he's at least half as good as advertized. If so, things are certainlly looking up. With Adams coming the inside game should be better as well. I liked what I saw from J.J. Moore and Lamar Patterson down the stretch. Go Panthers!
ReplyDeleteIt seems to me, Dixon is looking to replicate the Villinova offense... 4 guards and a PF/C. When I say guards, I mean ballhandlers who can create thier own shot... dribble/drive per Calipari..
ReplyDeleteThe roster would dictate that but the question is, will JD let the kids push the ball or will he restrain them to his "system"? Next years team is built for offense. If the 2012 class stays as is there will be 6 players on the roster in the 6'5" to 6'7" range that are athletic and can score. Depending on the play of adams and post play in general, pitt will have a pretty good amount of fire power next year.
DeleteBig time shooting?
ReplyDeleteAt 28% 3 point shooting, 49% free throw shooting, really?
He is NOT a shooting guard in my opinion...
DeleteSF...
Shoots on average 2 3pointers per game... poor FT shooter... that is NOT the definition of "shooting guard".
He fits the mold of SF...
He'll be in season 3 of major NCAA basketball and only ways a buck ninety - not a SF.
DeleteHis game is attacking the basket and hes got a great mid range game. Kemba walker had about the same 3 point shooting % so im not worried about that. His rebounding and assist numbers make up for that in my book
Deletepk...
DeleteKemba walker... albeit a 33% 3-point shooter... he shot about 5 3's per game... and made 80% FT's...
Zigler took less than 2 3's per game... and made 50% of FT's.
So your saying zeeogler cant shoot a few more threes?
DeleteReally? Zeigler what was i typing
DeleteI'm saying... he is not your prototypical shooting guard... he is more the SF type.
Delete50% of FT's... c'mon man... that is what a center typically shoots. He obviously doesn't have a hoop in his backyard with a ball return machine like Micah Mason.
He averaged a little over one 3 pointer a game - hardly a detriment to the team. He's a slasher and shot 46% overall - not bad considering he was asked to do everything. He also led the team in rebounding (6.7/game) and led the team in blocks. He rebounds and plays defense - sounds like a Pitt player to me. FT's sucked and that must improve but the rest of his game is legit and a good fit for Pitt. His dad is from the Howland tree of basketball so Pitt's style will probably fit him well. I'm hoping Pitt keeps the Chris Jones recruit - I've liked everything I've read on him.
ReplyDeleteI was anti-Patterson at the four, but if Ziegler is eligible to play next season then I'd start him at the two, Moore at the three and Lamar at the four. I think JJ is ready for 28-30 minutes a game as he should be much improved and ready to go in his junior season.
ReplyDeleteZanna would be the backup at the four and Taylor at the five. It would also mean Gilbert could redshirt, which would be a huge bonus. If Tray needs to sit out a year, then my five would be: Woodall, Moore, Patterson, Zanna and Adams.
Starting 5.... assume Ziegler has to sitout..
DeleteWoodall, Patterson, Moore, Zanna, Adams.. 6th man.. John Johnson.
I can also see...
Woodall, Johnson, Patterson, Moore, Adams... with Zanna, Taylor, Gilbert fighting for minutes.
Chris,
ReplyDeleteDoes this team have room for Goodman now? Do they ask an existing player to move on (and who do they send packing) or do they rescind the off to Chris Jones? To me, it seems that Zeigler, Jones and Goodman would be a great infusion of young talent - especially when added to the class with Adams and Robinson.
I can't see another player getting pushed out, but if I had to guess somebody I'd say it would be Wright. I don't think his defense is as good as some make it out to be and his offensive game is terrible. JJ Johnson was pretty bad on defense this season, but his shooting is much better than Cameron's.
ReplyDeleteWright just seems like he belongs at Cleveland State rather than at Pitt.
When will people accept that not every player is an all star, especially as freshman? Hes raw offensively but plays tough defense and rebounds exceptionally well for a 2.
DeleteChris, do you think theres any chance pitt goes after tony mitchell from alabama? Ive also read today that dixon is still on goodman hard
I agree with this sentiment. Wright is pretty limited offensively, but the kid is a freshman and clearly a very good athlete. He could certainly contribute in the future. It's not like he's devoid of potential.
DeleteWright wasn't a high major player to begin with. Ohio State realized this and pulled his offer. But Pitt isn't going to push him out. If he is not back year it will be his own doing.
ReplyDeleteAs for Zeigler, it doesn't matter if he can shoot threes because he can still score and shot 46% from the field this season. The FTs are a problem, especially for somebody who gets fouled so much, but his scoring ability, rebounding ability, and defense is more than enough to instantly make him the best SG they've had in many, many years. Duke and UCLA wanted him. Enough said.
No, Wright was always going to be a project, which is why he was redshirted immediately. But he at least has some serious raw athleticism.
DeleteZeigler's ability to actual guard another 2 guard is key. Pitt hasn't had big guards that could get into the lane and score since probably Vonteego Cummings. Robinson can a bit and Zeigler definitely can. Put JJ Moore on the other wing and there is a tremendous amount of athleticism out there. Plus, JJ can shoot the 3 fine as can Patterson if they want to go that direction. This past year team's problem was that they had worse athletes than their competition at 3 spots on the floor pretty often.
Zeigler is a great get for Dixon and a great addition to the team no matter when he is able to play.
ReplyDeletePitt has a terrible season... and everyone wants to unload the roster for unknowns??? Geesh...
ReplyDeleteSome of the problem is Dixon has toooo rigid a system. Go watch them play at Greentree this summer. Yeh, it's playground ball but fun to watch.
The biggest disappointment has been Dante Taylor... he had all the credentials and looks lost out there. Some big men get offers just because of their size... Zanna can't make layups... Gilbert thus far has been unimpressive... They don't have a PF!!
So, I see Dixon going with 4 ballhandlers and Adams at center this season.
Unless they redshirt gilbert, who i thought played just as well as zanna and taylor in limited minutes, zanna will play some pf this year. Tra, patterson, moore, zanna, adams would be my be starting lineup. I think this is what the lineup will be, more than likely: tra, johnson, moore, patterson, adams
DeleteWhat about the "other" Johnson... Durand Johnson...
ReplyDeleteseems he will get lost with the incoming...
