Monessen QB has a final three

Monessen quarterback Chavas Rawlins has named a final three and they are West Virginia, Tennessee, and Duke.

  1. Wow, mighty Duke.

Pitt's football recruiting appears to be rock-solid. Chryst sure seems to know what he's doing.

    1. The kid apparently didn't want to stay in town. Can't blame Chryst for that.

    2. He wanted out by any means, as does his brother. Pittikrit, were you bitching when pitt got its first five commits, the most at this point by pitt in half a decade? Didnt think so

  2. I actually had Rawlins penciled in... guess not...

btw... I hear Sal Sunseri (Tennessee) is hot on the tail of Foster!!!

  3. Did you hear this from the same people who told you he would go to Michigan even though you even said you had no credible source..classic joed being joed

    1. Sal recruiting Wpial is well known...
I'm not saying Tennessee is being considered by Foster.. just that Sal is hot on his tail. ya never know with Sal...
I think foster is going to a Big 10 school.. clearly OSU and PSU are tops on his list... but I think he will endup at Michigan.

    1. I think Chryst told Rawlins the truth... that he didn't see him as a QB at Pitt.... not even a backup.
It appears Rawlins choices are based on his best opportunity to be QB. I've said previously, Rawlins is a good athlete... he is NOT a BCS level QB.
I'm sure other college coaches are just saying the words Rawlins wants to hear so to land him.

  5. Chris, pitt just offered fla qb and cincy commit alton meeks. Does pitt have a shot?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Rawlins won't play qb at WVU. He is not accurate enough for Holgy's scheme. He'll liely play safety or WR if he has enough speed. I wonder if Rawlins knows this yet?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Not getting Chavas doesn't hurt as bad as now pretty much not having a shot at his younger brother.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Why does Chavas's School have any bearing on this highly touted younger brother? If they are to play together, then it is his younger brother driving Chavas's school decision? If so then the younger brother has decided WVU, Tenn and Duke? Really? Would the younger brother if he really is as good as suggested limit himself to these 3 schools?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Isn't his younger brother a potential baseball pro? He may not even play college fb. Also, what if Chavas goes to WVU and gets d*cked around with position switches and isn't happy? He certainly won't be a qb in Holgy's system. What is WVU falls in to medicrity ion the Big 12 while Pitt thrives under Chryst? Alot of factors to think about...

    1. His younger brother said the other day that his future lies in football so his baseball dreams appear to have ended.

  10. The recruiting duo of Rudolph from Belle Vernon and Haering from Mt. Lebo is suppose to be able to lockdown the top recruits from Wpial.
Lets wait 6 months to grade them...

However, it is unrealistic to think they will be able to lockdown every top wpial recruit. If they get 5 of the top 10... that is a good thing.

    1. Joe, no offense, but that might be the most rational, coherent, intelligent post you've had. I have no problem with you going negative on Pitt, but I'm glad you have it in you to post a well-reasoned thought on occasion.

      Delete
    2. If this was Johnson from Belle Vernon not having Pitt as final 4... I would be post differently.
Johnson is a gimme!!! (or should be)...

But, if you read... I tend to be somewhat realistic and consistent with my opinions.. I've said this before. However, for example...
ie. Foster... albeit I'd love to see him at Pitt... I don't think it is realistic to think he will select Pitt.
Rawlins... he is not BCS level QB... if he wants to be QB he has to go elsewhere... so not a big loss with Rawlins.

      Delete
    3. You saying it's unrealistic for Foster to end up at Pitt is actually what's unrealistic. All of the kid's friends go to Pitt and he has no "in" with any other school. Until he expresses a real desire for another school, Pitt is as realistic as anybody else, and even more so.

    4. So Foster is going to pick a school because some "acquantences" go there??? Really...
      Not by my inside info..
No excitment coming from Foster RE: Pitt... as if he is obligated to go visit, etc.
So... I went to his twitter.. he is excited about Alabama..

#Alabama n #PennState comin to see the valleyboys practice today letsgo👍

      check out the Alabama envelopes....
then read the article on Chryst recruiting strategy... "just offer".. he is not a closer!

You are dreaming if you think Pitt has a shot at Foster. just sayin..

      Delete
    5. The fact that you think Foster is going to Michigan pretty much tells me that you have no inside info.

      Delete
    6. I didn't say I had inside info re:Michigan...
I still think it will be a Big 10 school..
based upon banter at Rod's gym...

but to say Foster will select Pitt because some friends?? which friends??
he is going to pick the college that will put him in the best position to get drafted into the NFL... and right now.... that isn't Pitt. Too many unknowns... the best scenario... is Voytik becomes starter by mid-season and Foster doesn't announce until all-army game.

    7. Have you ever talked to Foster, his coaches, and his friends? Because I have.

  11. Fully agree...

  12. Rawlins is a consensus 3 star recruit. #58 rated qb by scout, #19 dual threat on rivals and #24 dual threat on espn. I'm not sure its that big of a loss unless we're sure he would be a standout at another position...

Joe, a semi positive post about recruiting! Thats not so hard, right?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Rawlins is NOT a BCS level QB..
but, I would have loved to see him at Pitt at some other position.
But I've always said Pitt will not land EVERY top recruit in wpial... that is unrealistic. That said, I don't want it to be a wpial all-star team either as there is a big drop-off in talent, speed, or good work ethic to be BCS player.

      Delete
    2. I agree somewhat. The staff just needs to focus on the wpials big 3: johnson(pitt lean again), foster(pitts still tops here too), and boyd(im hearing its wvu but pitts still in the mix). I think if the staff gets johnson and foster, that plus tra chapman and corey clement would make the top end of this class phenomenal

  13. Looking at Dokes Top 20 players out of PA for 2013... 7 are from Wpial...
    1. Foster
    2. Johnson
    3. Kugler... MI commit (doesn't want to see dad 24/7)
    4. Boyd
    5. Orndoff... Pitt commit
    6. Rawlins... (Pitt not in final 4)(wants to be QB and unlikely at Pitt)
    7. Christian... WVU (Pitt is loaded at LB)

Johnson of Belle Vernon and Boyd of Clairton should be gimme's.
That said... landing 3 of top 7 would be a good day at the office.
If they don't land BOTH... very bad to say the least.
Frankly, I understand why Kugler, Rawlins and Christian did not select Pitt...

    1. Pitt is loaded at LB? Since when?

      Delete
    2. Perhaps logjam is better description...
Current starters are sophmores or juniors...
there are 11 on roster not including 3 incoming 2012 class for total of 14. Only 2 seniors so they will be down to 12 in 2013. Because of 4-3 defense, Pitt only needs 12 LB's on roster.

A few players... Mason, Price, Thomas.. to name 3..
if you were advising Christian... what reasons could you give to select Pitt.
Assuming no redshirt... he won't see the field until Junior year best case scenario.

      Delete
    3. All of those linebackers are average at best and no real stars there. Mason was above average before he blew out his knee. If the kid is that good he could start immediately.

      Delete
    4. pittgrad...
are you including the 3 of 2012?
Christian couldn't beat out any of starters or backup or incoming... at least until Jr. year.
      you kidding me?
Christian is good... but he is not great!

      Delete
    5. Chris, you cant deny that between todd thomas, juan price, eric williams, and ill even say laquentin smith theres a lot of potential. I say smith because at 6'2" 240 with a 4.6 forty he should be at mlb. Theres a lot of speed and athleticism there.

      Delete
  14. Boyd is no gimme. He may also end up at WVU.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He should be a gimme... due to Clairton to Pitt pipeline.
Bottom line... Chryst needs to land 3 of top 7 to be considered a good day at the office... anything less than that... oh boy..
He is probably waiting to see what Foster does...
Pitt needs some quality WR's in the pipeline. It wouldn't surprise me if Trent Coles was given a shot at WR... currently recruited as DB.

    1. Good luck with him at QB...you'd think that against Class AA competition, he would have done better than a 44.4% completion rate (68 of 153 passes for 991 yds and 10 TDs).

    2. 12 interceptions I believe...
he will be converted to WR at WVU...

  16. All the west virginia anonymous posters have to say that all the top athletes have wvu in their sites because wvu has to get the kids from someplace. WVU is out on an island by themselves in the big12. The drive to see a game from monessen to ames iowa, is so short! What a joke.

Chavas is being recruited as the next geno smith. The problem is that Chavas does not have the same skill set as geno smith. Holgorsen is taking credit for turning geno into a stud. That is completely false. He is taking credit so that he can get chavas to sign there. Geno was this good without Holgorsen and was slated to go in the top 3 rounds of the draft prior to holgorsen coming in. Chavas can't beat out Ford Childress who has been promised the job and has ties through his father. Very similar to the Sunseri syndrome faced at Pitt. Sure, holgy will promise him an opportunity to compete, but Ford is the heir apparent for the next four years at WVU. This is where kids need the right counseling prior to making commitments, but the ncaa won't allow it, which is a crock!

WVU is in trouble for talent after this class leaves. They will do well this first year in the big12 and I expect them to finish 4th, albeit, if no injuries. The following year, I expect them to fall into the bottom half of the big 12 for several years.

  17. Chris, does pitt have a shot at any of the georgia or florida recruits theyve offered?

  19. Talent, do you mean this Ford Childress? If so, he looks like a chip off the Holgy/Huggins block....

    http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/blog/eye-on-college-football/18701789/west-virginia-early-enrollee-qb-ford-childress-charged-with-dui

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yes, he is the son of all pro Ray Childress and he did get a dui three days before the spring game, further endearing himself to Holgorsen and the West Virgina (meant to spell that way) community. He was only twice the legal limit, so that's not bad for an 18 year old who won't be legal to consume alcohol for a few more years.

My point is that Ray Childress and Oliver Luck are tied together like Sal Sunseri and Dave Wannstedt. Childress will red shirt this year under the guise of a punishment unless Geno Smith is injured. He will then have four years to run the program. Chavas won't sniff the field as a qb and will end up at WR or Safety ala Thomas Sands.

WVU does need secondary help as two of their players recently got arrested for shoplifting. The culture is terrible in Morgantown and many parents should think twice before allowing their sons to matriculate. Two of their most successful alum are Pac Man Jones and Chris Henry. Now tell me, who in their right minds let's their son go to Morgantown. Puzzling!

    1. Completely agree with you Talent, could never see the attraction any kid outside of West Virginny would have to that school. The campus is nothing special, the program doesn't have that great of a track record in putting kids into the NFL, and let's face it, the school is not exactly a bastion of academic integrity.

WVU finally found a conference where they're a perfect fit, they're all football sellouts in the Big 12 and nothing else.

      Delete
  21. Is the PAC12 better than the ACC top to bottom? Is the Big12? I think the top two to three teams pull the rest of the conference and give them the perception of strength. Overall, I don't necessarily see it. The sound of crickets is disturbing lately here........

    2. That's Chryst's strategy in recruiting...

The article in rivals basically verified what I thought... how can any 17 year old kid get excited about Pitt with that attitude!!!

btw... I'm not big on wpial all-star teams... just the top recruits like Johnson, Boyd, etc. Don't know who the 2014 ones are..

Jordan Whitehead... Central Valley got an offer from Rutgers already and don't know who else... he is suppose to be up and comer 4star potential... why didn't pitt "just offer" whitehead while visiting Foster and the coach lyon at cv???

      Delete
    3. Yea recruits dont seem to mind that too much, you know, their future coach getting to know them. Theres a reason pitt has more commits at this point than in over half a decade. Its obvious that chris dislikes the chryst hire. He drops subtle hints like this and that grates me the wrong way. I appreciate your work, chris, and the info you give us all by answering our questions, but chryst has done everything right so far.

      Delete
    4. I don't like or dislike the hire yet. The man hasn't coached a game. In fact, the other day I tweeted that Chryst reminds me a lot of Jamie Dixon in the way he approaches a lot of things. I wouldn't call that an insult.

As for how many recruits they have at this point, who cares? That means nothing. They have to be the right recruits and time will tell if they will be.

      Delete
    5. I just point out recruits because, as much as people want to say chrysts style doesnt work, hes getting commitments, good ones at that. I guess thats my point

      Delete
    6. Quality over Quantity pk...

Of the 5, I think 3 are good ones... we'll see what the remainder of the class will look like.
this isn't OSU or Alabama.. i realize that.

      Delete
    7. "Good ones at that"? It's the same level as every other Pitt coach has had. Good, not great. I never said otherwise. But right now he has a handful of "good" prospects and you are acting like he's getting a bunch of highly coveted prospects. The truth is, he's on pace as a recruiter to be the equal of many of his predecessors, no better or no no worse. And like them he will probably get a few elite prospects to go with mostly "3 star" players.

      Delete
    8. I'm OK with "good" for now. What he does with them is more important. Hopefully distinguish himself from his predecessors in that regard.

      Delete
    9. I said "good". Im just trying to understand why everyone is acting like these are bums off the street. Ps, orndoff was highly touted

    1. Well, he's just a sophomore and they already offered him, so I think they are interested. And by the way, I didn't say the kid was right in his opinion. It's just the way he feels.

      Delete
  25. Yeah, He is getting the same quality recruits as previous coaches without BSing them and even though what Pitt FB program has gone thru in recent years.
I think he is doing great, especially with all the negativity around Pitt, especially the "fans(?)".

    1. I don't think Wanny BS'd anyone...
As for Todd Graham... he scrambled for his first class... the 2nd class stayed together due to Voytik. Do you think Chyrst could have landed Voytik if he was HC instead of Todd?? Don't know... but doubtful in my opinion.

I look at getting a recruit to commit like getting your GF to say yes to sex for the first time!!
Did you have to "woo" her... BS her??? Beg a little!!

      Delete
    2. Joe D,
Voytik probably would still be at Pitt if Chryst was coach instead of Graham.
Voytik recruited himself to Pitt, Todd got lucky. Voytik decided to visit Pitt while he was visiting family in Sharon, PA. He fell in love with the school and introduced himself to Graham.
Voytik fell into Graham's lap. It was NOT some great recruiting job by Graham

      Delete
  26. Joe D. - Do you think Chryst would have even recruited Voytik had he been here last season? I wonder and its an interesting question to ponder.

I don't agree with your dismissal of Chryst's influence on the 2012 class and putting way too much importance on Voytik.

While it is a nice 'feel good' story that Voytik helped keep everyone together that wouldn't have made one bit of difference had those players and their parents not also wanted to play for Paul Chryst after he was hired.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No clue if Chryst would have "offered" Voytik...
However, you need to understand, Voytik's Dad was "marketing" his son. And I don't mean that in a bad way... it is what you need to do when you are from bumF Tennessee... he went to camps all over, etc etc. Making contacts and good impressions, etc.

That is one to put big effort in landing..
Mt. Carmel has big history in HS football.... winningest program in PA... but it also is one of the oldest HS in PA... they know how to develop HS football players...

  29. Joe what you think of this player? Never seen him play.Big kid from the measureables but you can never trust them

    1. Joraskie has offers from Purdue, Rutgers, Syracuse, Northwestern....
He is not going to PSU... google it...
Pitt is in dire need of solid DL players... need to land at least 4 in this recruiting class..
Mt. Carmel has winning tradition in HS football and developing college football players... the central PA version of Quips...
Very worth pursuing... he is from PA!!! that increases Pitt's chances of landing him (within 300mile radius)
I believe he may be underrated as Mt. Carmel plays AA.

  30. Meanwhile the Zeff kid from Montclair is up to double-digit offers and a #22 offensive guard ranking from Scout. Yet PC has not offered.

    1. Goes to show what good marketing will do...
did you see the kids website???
      smoke and mirrors....
he is not BCS D1 OL player... most his offers are from mid-majors or Subdivision...
And Scout overrates northeast players... including PA, NJ, etc.

      Delete
    2. I never saw any of these kids play and don't pretend to be able to predict which ones will be stars. Secondly, a strong argument can be made that Rutgers/UConn and even Temple are better than Pitt at this point so maybe Pitt should consider him. Third, now that he is ranked more schools are becoming interested like PSU. Fnally, I am a strong believer in establishing pipelines. Pitt has gotten a lot of great players from NJ in the past and they need to re-establish a presence.

  31. Zeff is apparently not the type of lineman that Chryst wants. He wants large, powerful drive blockers, and that's not Zeff.

  32. Not sure if anyone saw what SI wrote. Sorry if its not allowed. Is it true?

Pittsburgh recently had -- and potentially missed -- a golden opportunity to impress a number of its top regional prospects. Hoping to attract a bevy of local recruits during their more personal junior day event, the Panthers did not receive the turnout they anticipated.

Aside from the five current commits in attendance, only two big-time visitors made the trip to campus: four-star offensive lineman Dorian Johnson and four-star wide receiver Robert Foster. Both players are crucial targets for the team, and drawing Foster to the session was imperative, as many analysts believe he'll head out of state. Pitt appears to be the team to beat for Johnson, and having him interact with five previously pledged players only bolsters that cause.

The negative side of the event, however, was the list of players -- many at one point confirmed -- who did not attend. That list includes in-state talents Tyler Boyd, Titus Howard, Chavas Rawlins and Justin Moody, plus Ohio targets Marcus Ball and Tra'von Chapman.
