Pitt football loses a commitment

Paul Chryst lost one of his 2013 commitments today when 6'5" 290 pound offensive lineman Dan Samuelson of Plymouth (IN) HS chose to change his commitment to Nebraska.

  1. This is a shocker... to me at least. So much for Chryst's low key (non-excitment) recruiting!!
He was the better of the 2 OL recruits.

    When did Nebraska offer??

I think Chryst really recognized this kid had the tools to succeed, too bad they lost him.

Nebraska has more to offer with a rabid fan base a full stadium on game days.

  3. They offered when he visited. Why does his commitment loss get a blog post when his commitment did not (only Orndoff and Parrish got posts) seems a-bit negative just saying.

    1. Isn't that the point...
He committed to Pitt... but was still looking?? and visiting colleges for that matter.
He didn't have Nebraska offer when he committed to Pitt.
Apparently Samuelson continued to pursue other colleges even though he committed to Pitt. There was some article... I think in rivals whereby Samuelson's father was quoted...

  4. Stinks to lose him, but this staff will fill its allotment of O-linemen.

  5. There are 100 div 1 players who play OL between NJ, PA, MD, and Ohio. Pitt will recruit well enough.

Look at the no shows... is that why Samuelson backing out...

Anyway... I know it's early (but can I say I told you so)... but the no shows are a sign of things to come... they are just not excited about Chyrst.. perhaps Peterson needs to give Chyrst a kick in the a$$ regarding recruiting. Albeit he made over 110 offers.... the "Just Offer" strategy isn't working!!

    1. Joe D - I think we need to drop the "just offer" references - the phrase was taken a little out of context.

But, this was a bad hire - recruiting is the lifeblood for college football and it's clear, Chryst doe not have the making of a great recruiter/closer.

Oh, we "may" get Foster and Johnson because they clearly have friends at Pitt but, in orde for us to TRY and compete with the big boys again,(which we never will)Pitt needed to hit a home run with this hire and they clearly did not.

Chris agrees (you call him Dokes for some reason) but, he doesn't want to say it

Everyone keeps saying - "give him time" - by the time we do that, it will be crystal clear that Pederson made another bad hire.

I want - try to be optimistic with this guy....but, ya just cannot.

I don't think Chryst is a bad hire... I like him as a coach..
      except from a recruiting perspective..
someone needs to give him a swift kick in the a$$.
Chryst recruiting strategy may work in WI... but it's not going to work at Pitt..
The rivals article last week on recruiting was scary!!! They called Wanny a closer... Chyrst needs some lessons on how to close the deal... but moreso how to create excitement for the recruit to want to select Pitt...

    3. I think it's a big deal losing a committ...

Its a bigger deal than not landing a prospect... (old saying.. bird in hand better than 2 in the bush).. Samuelson is a quality OL player.
especially since the knock on Chryst, which he proves everyday, is that he can't recruit!!

I'm in the irrationally pessimistic group at the moment until I see actions that support a change in that position. (Remember, Chryst said to judge him on his actions not his words). Getting a bunch of 3star mediocre recruits isn't going to cut it in the ACC.

    6. Last I checked, this kid's bust hadn't been casted for Canton yet. It's one 17-18 year old that changed, shouldn't come as a shock to anyone that a kid that age changed his mind when he probably has no clue what he would do with his life outside of football yet. If he did, he certainly wouldn't be going to an academic graveyard like Nebraska over Pitt.

Bradley was at Pitt's practice because he took his nephew, who is a recruit.

  11. Here's what just kills me as a Pitt fan. See, I'm old enough to remember how good....scratch that - how DOMINANT we were.

We used to DESTROY teams. Unless you're in your 50's, you have no idea how great we once were.

Chris knows, Joe D knows and I certainly know.

We were like Alabama is now - stifling defense, etc etc.

Is there another team on the planet that went from that to where we are now?

Look, I am hoping - PRAYING that Chryst is the guy.

The turnout for the Pitt camp was very disappointing - we needed a young coach like maybe Cristobal - throw a bunch of $ at him so he'd never want to leave and have Chryst as the OC.

In my mind, that would have worked.

But, it didn't happen - OK, I'm going to try and be positive but, when you lived the glory years as I did.....it's very sad to see the program as it is now.

We are going to be like Wake Forest in the ACC- a little success here and there but, never again will we see anything anywhere close to what we once had and that's...I guess what makes me pessimistic.

    1. Pitt went downhill mirrors the decline of the steel industry in pittsburgh area (by 1985 most mills shutdown)... Pitt relied heavily on wpial for source of players.
Wpial schools have not merged becoming smaller and less competitive... Wpial HS football is not what it once was either. There are perhaps 20 solid HS programs out of 130 in wpial (mostly 4A schools).

But to name a few schools that dropped... Notre Dame comes to mind...
but it's all about recruiting... if you win the recruiting war... you win on the field. But it is difficult to land recruits outside a 300mile radius.

      Delete
    2. Weren't all from WPIAL. Hugh Green, Rickey Jackson, for example, were from the deep south. The big difference for Pitt now as compared to then is the limit on scholarships. Pitt used to be able to bring in as many kids as they wanted to, now they're limited to 85 total.

I do agree that the mills shutting down hurt from the aspect of how many athletes were available in the WPIAL then as compared to now.

  12. Bless him, but there was one man who had more to do than anyone with dismantling everything Majors and Sherrill had built.

It's never been the same since his tenure as Head Coach.

Don't think I even need to post his name.

Regarding Chryst... frankly, he is the best hire at Head Coach since the days of yore.

And I will do my best to refrain from piling on the the naysayers when he starts showing what an impact a real "game day" coach can have with the talent Pitt has right now.

After this fall... it will be evident what kind of coach Chryst is and the recruiting will take care of itself.

By the way, Chryst was not Pederson's hire. It was key boosters who made him the guy.

    Cristobal was Pederson's choice.

  13. We haven't seen a single game yet. Let's give the guy a chance before we decide he sucks. Wanny always won the offseason but never the big games. Maybe we don't get the studs but get the wins. People forget Revis was a 2 star recruit.

    1. Revis was a 3star... but from Aliquippa!!!

Nobody says Chryst sucks as a coach...
      only as a recruiter...
and if you think Pitt is going to win games with mediocre players... your dreaming!

      Delete
    2. Well, that's an exaggeration. Chryst will have good players and I'm sure he will coach them well enough to win a good amount of games. My only point in all of this is, is he going to be an improvement over the other coaches Pitt got rid of? I said it a million times but I'll say it again- either hire somebody better than what you've had or stop firing coaches. Is Chryst going to be BETTER than Wannstedt or Harris? I have my doubts. As good? That's very possible.

don't you know the diff between fact and opinion..
"lousy" is an adjective.. it describes therefore not a "fact"... it is opinion.
however, i base my opinion on Chryst's actions and words since being hired as well as observations, quotes of recruits, articles by others. I point to the Rivals article... scary to say the least... Junior Day see SI article... etc.(facts) to support my opinion.

  15. Joe D I understand these are opinions and in this case not singling you out as others are saying he can't recruit either. Even the rivals article is still an opinion, Frankly until we see LOI day 2013 i am not sure what anyone says is not opinion. His record will be the facts. I guess in my opinion it gets old listening to the negatives that are because some fans thinks he should do it their way not his. Me personally I am cautiously optimistic Chryst will do well even with Tino as his starter( since no one we have is better).

So, I see Voytik getting playing time... just love the kids work ethic and mentality.

  17. I realize that Coach Chryst’s recruiting hasn’t, as of yet, exactly excited the fan base, but after searching some Wisconsin web sites I found a few quotes that might offer some hope for the future of Pitt football under this staff.

"I don't really care how Wisconsin is recruiting — is the easiest way I can put it," said Scott Kennedy, the national director of scouting for Scout.com." They're going to be good.”

“Wisconsin has had consistent success over the years, despite recruiting classes that rarely finish in the top 25 nationally.”
"I kind of hold them up as a standard that you don't always have to win the recruiting battles in order to win the games," Kennedy said.

"They've got a system in place right now where they are as good at evaluating talent as there is. They do a great job of developing those players and getting players they know they're going to keep for four or five years and winning big."

"For them, usually a full class is about four four-star guys," said Mike Farrell, national analyst for Rivals.com. "What Wisconsin is known for doing is finding kids that are under-recruited, three-star kids that they turn into college football players and potential NFL guys."

Sounds pretty promising to me. Now I’m just hoping that Chryst and his assistants can transfer some of the Badger’s success over to Heinz Field on Saturday afternoons.

  18. Sunseri recruiting Foster should bode well for Pitt. So, Mr. Sunseri, why did you allow your son to go to Pitt? If Pitt is so bad, why did you allow it? Oh yes, and why did you go to Pitt? So you are asking me and my family to do as you say, but not as you do!

There is no way that is believable, sorry. If any recruit believes that, shame on the recruit and all levelheadedness everywhere. The pitch back to Sal is that the University of Pittsburgh obviously opened up the doors to be successful in life. Now tell me why I shouldn't go to Pitt? After the sound of crickets, these kids should knock a majority of the schools competing with Pitt off the list.

    1. Sal was with Carolina Panthers when Tino enrolled... he sent him to CC so to get in drivers seat with Pitt and Wanny... then sprinkle in Wanny connection with Sal.

Thereafter, Sal went to Alabama... the younger Sunseri (Vinnie?) picked Alabama... Sal was coaching at Alabama. Don't know if his son followed him to Tennessee.

I don't think Foster is considering Tennessee... albeit I doubt he will go to Alabama... however, if Foster wants SEC, I can see Foster picking TN over AL due to Sal. Don't rule out Sal yet!

    1. Then Pitt is screwed. You can't be a quality program if you can't land the best players in your own backyard.

      Delete
  21. Give Paul Chryst a break. With all do respect Doke, Pitt is not screwed if they don't land these two prospects. Pitt just needs wins and the recruits will come, not vice versa. The good news is that there are no 2-10 , 3-9 seasons. Pitt should win 8 games this year at a minimum.

My only issue is that when you are a new coach with a new system, the qb position is the most important. I would rather take a 7-5 year giving a young qb some experience versus starting year two with a brand spanking new qb with no playing time under his belt. Just my preference as to how I would do it. PC will be just fine. Like I said, Pitt should win 8 with their eyes closed. New qb and they win 7.

    1. Some of you are way too sensitive and way too paranoid. You tell me that I have to give Chryst a break as if I'm getting on him. I said it a million times that I think Pitt will get both Johnson and Foster. In fact, I think I'm the only recruiting writer who thinks that. So I'm hardly being hard on the guy. BUT, IF he does not land the top local prospects in his first year then it does not bode well for the future. I know some fans don't want to hear that but it's common sense. I'm not saying he's going to go 3-9, but if he can't land elite players then he's not going to go 9-3 either. You need players, bottom line, and if Chryst can't get them locally then he's not going to get them elsewhere.

      Delete
  22. I would agree. What Pitt needs more than anything is to win games and from there the recruits will come. Sounds like to me PC is a lot like Jamie Dixion he should get the most out of his players. If Pitt can win 9 or 10 games don't you think the better recruits will come?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Just because you win 9 to 10 games doesn't mean better recruits will automatically come. It helps though!!
Look at Jamie Dixon... he hasn't lit the world on fire in recruiting... look at his record... he has been HC at Pitt for what... 9 years. He has a solid record but still can't land big time recruits year in and year out.

      Delete
    2. Dixon had to contend with Pitt basketballs not particularly successful history for many years. He had to prove Pitt Bball was going to be good year in year out.

Once he did that he started picking up much more high profile recruits. Strangely Pitt has struggled more with these higher profile recruits than with work oriented lower profile guys.

      Delete
  23. You never like to see a kid decommit, but it's going to happen occasionally. It's part of dealing with 18 year old kids.

With Chryst's low-key nature, his best recruiting tool will be on-field success, so the program will eventually sell itself. I believe that's his ultimate goal, and where the "just offer" philosophy will work.

He's not some slick-talking, greasy car salesman kind of guy. He's not going to BS kids. He's too authentic and down-to-earth for that. His personality and philosophy are meant more for the long-term, and I believe it will ultimately work.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Just offer.... will never work... your kidding yourself to think that will work on 4 or 5 star recruits.
You don't have to be slick talking to be an effective recruiter.
Recruiter of the year was Sal Sunseri... he is not slick... he is relentless in pursuit!! That is what it takes... and Chyrst doesn't do that and it appears he doesn't let his assistants do that either.

      Delete
    2. Ok Joe - You must not read much about the recruits Pitt is chasing so here are TWO quotes from 2 articles about Foster: "Pitt is a real good school with great academic facilities and they show me a lot of love," Foster said."

"Showing me a lot of love...". This is NOT "just offer". There is much more in this article about how Pitt is on him hard and often...very often.

From Foster's coach in another article: "“Coach Engram has gone the extra mile with Rob..."

      Delete
    3. greg,
      Engram had better!!!
CV is less than an hour from Pitt campus!!
But, if you look at Foster tweets.... he is not "excited" about Pitt. He definintely gets excited about Alabama (albeit I don't think he is going there). ie. 7 letters in a day. He is excited Sal Sunseri of TN is going to visit a practice!! Engram should be there weekly!! He should be at EVERY game!!

I will say this... if Johnson doesn't commit by end of August... Pitt should be nervous.
Let's hope Pitt is in final 5 of Foster which I assume he will be announcing by end of August.

      Delete
    4. I believe Chryst's philosophy will work (and I say that as someone who supported hiring Cristobal). To say something is never going to work before giving it a chance is short-sighted and presumptuous.

Let's give Chryst and his staff more than a few months before deciding their style isn't working. The bottom line is letter of intent day, and how that translates into on-field success.

Winning is the ultimate recruiting tool. If Chryst gets it done on the field, high-caliber recruits will naturally flow to Pitt.
