Dorian Johnson commits to Penn State

Quite frankly, the Panthers lost one they never should have lost, and it's now time to seriously start questioning Paul Chryst's recruiting in his first year.  More detailed story about how unhappy about all of this I am tomorrow.

  2. ALOT OF TIME LEFT, PEOPLE FELT PRETTY GOOD ABOUT HIM COMING TO PITT, BUT WHEN A PLAYER GOES AND VISITS A CAMPUS AS NICE AS PENN STATE SOMEONE CAN FALL IN LOVE. U NEVER KNOW AFTER SOME TIME AND HE THINK S ABOUT WHAT A FUTURE IS LIKE IN PLAYING AT PENN STATE RIGHT NOW AND HOW HE CAN GET ON THE FIELD AT PITT IN 2 YRS. WE NEED TO GET FOSTER THOUGH. THAT IS THE KEY. WE GOT THE QB, RB, NOW WE NEED THE WR.

  3. Where are the defenders now? Huh? Where are they?

Paul Chryst hasn't even coached a game yet, but he's a failure. HE'S A FAILURE. There is no getting around this - they lost a major-league offensive line propsect in their back yard to a school that is getting raked through the coals because it covered up a child rapist in its football program.

It's time to just give up on Pitt football, because Pitt football is hopeless. Chryst sucks. Period. Horrible recruiter.

  4. This is ridiculous! According to everyone here and on the boards, he was a Pitt lock and we shouldnt be worried about him visiting PSU.

This officially shows Chryst and his staff cant recruit. Heck, Rudolph is from BV and still didnt pull him.

Our recruits other than Clement and Orndoff are pretty much MAC offered level recruits, while PSU who is going through the worst scandal and has been the #1 story for bad reasons the past few days steals a Pitt lean from us.

It is time to evaluate what is wrong with us or this staff with recruiting. We need to win big, as in winning the BE this year flat out or it seems we will continue to fall behind talent wise to schools like OSU/PSU/etc.. who seem to have great recruiters. Heck, even if we win the BE this year itll be pointless. We need out of the BE IMMEDIATELY and need to win the ACC this year or else we are going to see PSU in 2016 and get stomped.

    1. Folks have been evaluating "what is wrong with us or this staff" for months. I'm not sure that's the answer.

It took Frank Beamer - in a talent rich region - over 5 years to get Va Tech up to a level of respectability.

I'd suggest a lot of folks need to take a chill pill and allow things to play out over the next couple years. This is NOT a quick fix situation and yet some of you are willing to conclude without the benefit of one season under PC's belt.

  5. Holy crap!!!
This was a "MUST HAVE" of those remaining top 7 wpial...

I had him as a gimme...
If Rudolph can't land a player from Belle Vernon... he should be fired...
and if Chryst can't close a deal... he should be fired.
and just after the Sandusky verdict... you kidding me!!!

Remember what Johnson said regarding Chryst recruiting in rivals article... that article had me very concerned...
Can I say.. told you so!!!

When Pitt starts bringing in MAC recruits...
that turns off the top recruits.. ie. Johnson!!!
consider Boyd gone.... and Foster also!!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Here is the worst part in all of this. Outside of Foster, Boyd, and Chapman there really is nobody else of an elite caliber that Pitt is strong with right now, so if they don't land all three then it's a long way down.

    1. And why is that? Is it a down year for PA Recruits or did they assume they had these kids locked up and putting all there eggs in one basket.

Don't they need to be talking to everyone and building relationships. What the hell are they doing.

It wont be an issue for the another year but the last few classes were not great and thats a huge concern.

  14. Well, the writing's on the wall with Boyd.

So Pitt has exactly one elite recruit left - Foster - and I wouldn't be remotely surprised if Coach Boring fails on that front, too. Not that it'll matter, because the offensive line will be trash and the QB won't have time to get Foster the ball. In fact, he's probably better off going elsewhere.

Pitt football is circling the drain.

  15. Johnson was not a Pitt guy, he wanted a campus, 70,000 people at a game. Pitt does not provide that, if someone wants a country type of campus than what can u do. Most college kids this does not come into play, for him it did.

  16. No offense fellas but most of you don't have the slightest clue what you are talking about when it comes to recruiting. There are a few elite recruiters and coaches who can get kids to go anywhere but the school and the program do most of the recruiting for itself. When I was being recruited, no amount of pressure or BS a coach was selling to me was going to influence my decision. Some kids just want to go to school at a certain place. PSU is one of those destination schools with huge fan support, a massive soldout stadium, games on tv, and nationally recognized opponents almost every week. When Johnson walks onto that campus, if he is enamored with the potential of that atmoshpere, it doesn't matter who we have on our staff. Pitt and Chryst's staff may have been culpable or maybe they never really had a chance. Obviously, regardless of the scandal, PSU is still a power and will continue to recruit well. The onus is now on Chryst to produce enough on-the-field results to force kids that would not normally choose Pitt, to consider coming to school here because we are winning against good competition, still giving kids a great education, and putting players into the NFL. Everyone needs to freakin relax. Kid hasn't played a down yet and I would have thought we just lost Orlando Pace by your reactions. Nor has he even signed an LOI. Long way to go before February including an entire season of playing/coaching the actual games.

    1. If you can't convince local kids who are fans of the program to commit, you're doomed.

Chryst is a dud. He has the personality of a piece of lumber and has grievously failed on the recruiting front, both in targeting players AND landing them.

Just put the football program out of its misery, please, and give the money to the basketball program.

    4. @ A BOMB Nice spin on losing someone that Pitt really needed. This probably sets the program back even further. I do see where a trip to PSU could get you excited. It's a night and day difference maker between Belle Vernon and State College. I think everyone is either hurt or angry over losing this kid, and that's your right, but I for one still look forward to seeing how the upcoming season plays out. It's not like playing for the national championship this year. Play hard, jell as a team, win a few games, and establish a solid reputation going forward.

  17. Let's hope Howard sways Boyd. As for Foster, it's all a guessing-game at this point. There were numerous encouraging reports from the 7v7 camp this week regarding the staff's impact on local coaches. Do any of those teams have OL that hat can help out???

    1. This post is exactly what is wrong with our fanbase...Hoping for psu to get hit by the ncaa just so we can get any recruits who might waver from them. How about we beat them now, especially for a kid like Johnson who seemed to be a lock to Pitt, was a fan, local kid, etc....

      Delete
  19. Lets face it, pus is selling these kids better than we are whether we like it or not. We can say "who in there right mind would choose ups or who would allow their son to go to ups?" all we want but we arent looking at it from a non-biased view, or from a recruits view. That staff and those players had nothing to do with what happened, most pus people (who I despise!) did not have anything to do with the scandal, pus is still in the b10, doubtful they will be hit with anything significant from the ncaa as this was more of a university admin problem than a football specific problem, etc..."who in their right mind would send their kid to psu?" does not make sense, its not like the kid is going to get raped by Sandusky. Its time to look at our own program and figure out a way to improve the program instead of focusing on ups getting the death penalty just so we can do better ourselves.

  22. If Rudolph couldnt snag Johnson (both from BVA), how much faith does anyone else have in his recruiting abilities?

I saw Johnson yesterday at a local Wal-Mart - he is huge young man. I am 6'2 and I felt quite small.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm not sure how much more disappointment I can take. Every year for a decade, I thought that Pitt would turn the corner. And then the bottom falls out.

I was encouraged by the Graham regime and thought that his style of football would position Pitt to compete against schools that can recruit superior athletes. I still think he could have been successful if he had stuck around (and had any integrity whatsoever).

But the problem facing Pitt athletics is bigger than a coach -- it is a fear of being great. Look at how many people the other day were saying they wished Wanny was back. A guy who couldn't win a big game (the WVU miracle aside). A guy who couldn't win the worst BCS conference outright, despite having generally superior talent. And yes, Wanny bled blue and gold -- until he didn't. I would hope that a real "Pitt man" would carry himself with more class than Wanny did on his way out. His Hamlet act -- "will I coach, or won't I?" -- is not the behavior of someone who cares about his players. Did Pederson bungle the "resignation" -- absolutely. But this is a business and that stuff happens. Carry yourself with some class.

Look, maybe Mario Cristobal was not the answer at head coach. But Paul Chryst, while a solid coach by all accounts, was a safe pick. Safe old Pitt, happy to go 8-4 and play in a third tier bowl game. Why not take a chance at winning huge - or failing huge. All the excuse making is loser talk -- you either get the job done or you don't. Paul Chryst may still be a champion before the end, but early signs -- recruiting, Bostad's departure, etc -- are not encouraging.

I'm tired of hearing that we play in a small media market, or don't have a great gameday experience, or the recruiting base is shrinking, or any of a hundred other reasons why we can't win. I don't believe it, and any reader of this site has seen Chris outline why Pitt can be great. Chancellor Nordenberg and the Pitt community made a commitment 15 years ago to be a world-class research university. It's time that same relentless pursuit of excellence apply to athletics.

    1. I agree with your last point, yet it may also be the point. A lot of money goes into building a world class research facility. Awesome for Pitt to have it. Something to be proud of. Unfortunately, it leaves less money for athletics. I still believe Pitt athletics are world class anyways. Congratulations 2012 Ultimate National Champions! H2P

While im amazed at how blinded these recruits are i cant begrudge them for making what could be the biggest decision of their life, but, as a younger guy myself, i know for a FACT that i would never give psu a second glance. 1. That's what I was thinking...any time I would step in a shower in the locker room, my first thought would be "Is this where those kids were molested?"

  26. I have been fearful that Chryst couldn't recruit. That was the word on him even before he was hired. That is why I favored Cristobal. But there is a lot of speculation going on about why Johnson chose psu. It would be good for some bloger or sportswriter to ask him why he made the choice that he did. Maybe that would give us some information that we could use to improve our recruiting.

    1. He said he was comfortable with both staffs and Pitt and PSU but liked the atmosphere better at PSU.

"(The Sandusky case) didn’t have anything to do with my decision at all,” Johnson said. “I like that the new staff and the football program is going in a new direction.”

Johnson said he ultimately picked Penn State over Pitt, which he visited a dozen times, despite a strong relationship with Panthers offensive coordinator Joe Rudolph, a Belle Vernon alum.

“I was comfortable with both schools and their coaching staffs,” Johnson said. “I like Penn State’s campus and felt like I would get a good education. You’re playing big-time football.”

O’Brien and his staff hosted Johnson and his mother, Lisa Cotton, and maternal grandmother, Jackie Johnson, on campus Saturday afternoon. On their ride home, Johnson told them he felt comfortable at Penn State, and they gave their stamp of approval.

“I told them on the ride home, ‘This is where I want to be,’” Johnson said. “I definitely wanted to get it out of the way and focus on having a good senior year.”

  29. Cristobal isn't pulling in 4 stars, so that argument doesn't hold water Houston Panther. Paul Chryst is 0-0 as a head coach. Everyone else on yje site is also 0-0. How many recruits have each of you landed for Pitt? Let's say zero. You all are part of the problem.

Despiye all the dirt at PSU, their fan base supports fooyball. Our coach is undefeated and you all want to have him resign. Why does anyone think there is someone better out there, than Coach Chryst? It isn't Cristobal, so who is better than PC? Go ahead negative folks, put your list together. Paul Chryst has it right. You play better when you want to be at a school. So if you are not wanting to be a Panther, go be something else. Caution, once you go someplace else, don't expect to come back when Paul Chryst turns this into a powerhouse. He will do it for sure.

A three year plan. Absolutely. Pitt has a better chance at getting to a national championship before PSU. I am glad that Joe is going to concentrate on football, because his negative football posts don't help matters. He just piles on. Iguess the bball recruits will be measured by vertical jump, because that is the only measurable that can determines what kind of player you will be.

  30. We lost an offensive tackle, not a game for crying out loud!!!!

What if Johnson went on to fail 4 drug tests and was off the team by his sophomore season? Would it really matter if we got a 4 star recruit and maybe 1-2 spots higher on the national recruiting rankings?

    Let things play out....

I seriously can't stand well over half of my fellow Panther fans, hate to say it...But it is true. One of you guys have to be the guy in section 524 right behind me that screams in my ear the whole game that knows everything lol.

    1. I can only speak for myself when I say that losing any one player is not a big deal. But the problem is, Pitt is not heavily involved with very many good players so losing one you supposedly had in the bag is very troublesome.

  31. This is a major disappointment, no question about it, but can the people calling for Chryst and staff to be fired give it a rest for crying out loud? Good grief, relax.

Chryst may ultimately not work out, but can we give the guy at least a few seasons before we're ready to have him walk the plank?

If Chryst fails as a coach I'll want him gone as much as anybody, but I'd like to see a lot more before deciding he's a failure as a head coach.

  32. Our author on this beloved blog had MAJOR concerns with the Chryst hire - he may not come out and say it but, we knew his thoughts.

Recruiting is the lifeblood of college FB and Chryst and staff clearly does not have what it takes.

I thought he was a terrible hire....and he will prove to be just that.

Crystobal was the hire but, Pederson was too wussy afraid that he would lose him after the Graham disaster.

You throw enough $ at a coach who proves himself and he won't leave.

Now, here we are - yeah, probably WILL win 8 or 9 games this year with our weak-ass schedule and...with Wannstedt players.

This was a bad hire period. And...it proves that with Pederson hiring Haywood....OMG, then Graham and now Chryst that he has ZERO clue as to what the hell he is doing.

Wait - just thought of something...Pederson hired a MAC coach in Haywood and now all we can get are MAC type players....we joined the wrong conference!!!....ANOTHER Pederson mistake.
