Panthers land Corey Clement

Paul Chryst landed an elite running back today as Glassboro (NJ) HS committed to the Panthers while attending their camp.  The 5'11" 205 pound Clement also had offers from Penn State, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Florida State, Iowa, Wisconsin, Rutgers, and West Virginia.

  1. Can you put to rest people questioning Paul Chryst's ability to recruit for at least a couple days now? @thehaters

  2. This is great news. With clement in the fold, adding chapman and johnson soon would give pitt 3 elite commits by july. Thatd set pitt up for one hell of a class

    1. b, you can't do that - I mean, the kid just gave us a verbal - you ARE being negative.

Let's take the young man at his word.

    2. I know but I am not trying to be. I am just thinking about what just transpired with Zach Challinsworth. I am cautiously optimistic and very excited - how is that?

  7. Wait - first Chryst can'r get anyone's attention because he isn't aggressive and throwing out the hard sell.

Then Chryst can't be effective because he wants to make sure that the kid like PITT as a school and not just a football program.

Then Chryst can't get credit even after one of the best RBs on the East Coast chooses PITT... now we have to wait until LOI Day to give him any credit at all?

Man, talk about sour grapes from the anti-Chryst contingent.

This is a great pick up by the Panthers in any year - a four star RB (rivals) who had great offers. We beat out ND, OSU, PSU, Nebraska, Wisconsin, etc... and I offer congratulations.

This will get the higher ranked kid's attentions I think and hopefully we'll get the ball rolling.

It sure beats seeing "Toledo, Akron, Temple."

  9. To be fair, many think Clement will still look at Wisconsin and Notre Dame even though he committed to Pitt today, so as we've seen more and more in college football lately, it's not over until they sign on the dotted line. But I'd rather have him and have somebody have to take him away than to have to take him away from somebody.

    1. That is why I am cautiously optimistic and my comment above has nothing to do with Paul Chryst's ability to recruit because I think he can BUT everything to do with how kids waver now a days. I am going to quit posting I feel like Joe D right now with all the post

    2. The good news is, he's been re-tweeting congrats for the past hour so he's definitely excited about being a Panther.

    3. Good coup for Coach! It was great to see "he had offers from Penn State, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Florida State, Iowa, Wisconsin, Rutgers, and West Virginia"! That tells me that he is able to compete with some of the big boys. And the fact that he is enrolling in Jan is even better.

  10. Pitt told him ges the only rb theyd recruit so if he flops pitt is put in a tough spot. Forget that, though. Hes a panther now

    2. Yes and i think im the pnly one who thinks crockett will be good as well. The last staff loved him but hes had injury problems. At this point, though, he may just be buried beneath a ton of talent as you mentioned

      Delete
    3. Well, I'm not discounting him of course. It's just that the other three are big names. At the very least you have to think they have a good chance of being good because of their pedigree or in Bennett's case because what he accomplished already. But Crockett could be better than all of them for all any of us know.

      Delete
    4. This is true. If shell and clement are as good as advertised then pitt will have 3 backs that most teams outside the bamas of the world would have in their two deep in 2013

    5. Any word on how chapmans visit went?

    6. Reading recruiting sites, blogs and Zeise's latest report...Chapman is coming to Pitt on July 1st. Also I am reading several other nice names are not far behind.

  13. But does he run track?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Running track does not mean anything now for him. It only means something when colleges are deciding on who to look at. If he had track times to post and show that he had speed then that is good enough. I know your poking at Joe D but he would agree with this too.
In other words if a kid is known as a speed back then running track doesnt matter. In fact if a kid is known as fast then running track could possible hurt him. What if he gets beat?

However, if he is known to be fast and has forty times documented then running track doesnt matter. If a kid is slower then running track could help make him seem better if he learns to run properly. Its all on how they want to showcase themselves.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I dont think this will effect Green at all. If he wants to visit and or commit it doesnt matter how many backs you planned on taking, you will make room. He is also good enough that I dont believe he`d feel blocked by Clement. On top of all of that he is a long shot anyways obviously.

Someone like Williams on the other hand could be effected imho.

  15. This is a great pickup for Pitt and Chryst. I'm going to stick by my past posts about withholding judgment about Coach Chryst and his staff's ability to recruit until letter-of-intent day, but this makes me feel better about where things are headed.

Pitt beat out some big-time schools for this kid, so maybe Chryst and staff know a little something about recruiting.

  16. This is a great sign. The offense needs a complete overhaul and influx of players for Chryst system. We can focus on the defense next year with all big time talents in the WPIAL.

  17. Good morning and Happy Fathers Day to all.

Clement is rated high (in my opinion overrated)...
Everyone is enamoured with the 2500 yds.
He played for Glassboro Single A ball in South NJ powder puff league... his 100m is 11.7 (slow, slow, slow).
Need I remind you of the #2 Wpial rushing RB... Venero (?) from Fort Cherry. Yes, he amassed the yards in Single A ball... went to WVU and found out he was not D1 material... after 2 years he went to IUP (I think).
I hope Clement isn't another Venaro..

Who he is competing against... Isaac Bennett...
did you all read about Isaac's spring?? he did very well.
why.. he ran track in HS... 10.9 for 3rd place in Group 5 Oklahama state finals... and long jump over 22 feet for 1st place!!!
Yes, I like skill players who run track... and it seems many on Pitt did.. Street, Williams, tinker, Bennett, Davis, etc

    1. Those track times are meaningless. Whats more important is quickness, elusiveness, and power. He has those three things. He didnt get the offers he did by being slow.

    2. Two names:

      R e n a l d o N e h e m i a h

      Delete
    3. Thats one name but whats your point? Wide reciever and cb are the only two positions where goos strait line speed is necessary. How many plays are players going to run 40 yards or 100m in a strait line? Slmost none. Quicknes, quickness, quickness

      Delete
    4. Clement does not have D1 quickness, elusiveness, power.
It's relative to the level of his competition... so, he may look fast/quick on film... that is because his Single A powerpuff South NJ league is slow, slow, slow.
      He will red-shirt as frosh...

      Delete
    5. My point is, that the focus on one measure of potential success is irrational and inaccurate.

The last time I checked, the game of football isn't overly effected by straight line speed or the ability of an athlete to long jump. Position specific technique and down/distance awareness are far more impactful when it comes to player success than any track influenced measurable. The constant "Track Mantra" is contrived.

      Delete
    6. @ Joe D "Clement does not have D1 quickness, elusiveness, power."

The coaching staffs at Boston College, Florida St., Iowa, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio St., Penn St., Purdue, Syracuse, Rutgers, WVU, and Wisconsin disagree with your assessment. I'll take the opinions of dozens of coaching professionals over your critical eye, with all due respect.

You are the most negative poster I've ever seen. Pitt, for all accounts, lands a highly recruited player outside of the WPIAL which you advocate endlessly, repeatedly, continuously, frequently, often, again and again, over and over, time after time, persistently, constantly and you're still not satisfied...WTF? Seriously? What is your major malfunction? You're the Al Davis of Pitt fans. Completely enamored with measurable's and completely oblivious to whether or not the kid is an actual football player.

Sorry Chris if this is too negative but enough is enough. Sometimes I just can't ignore the dude because his post are so ridiculous and unfounded.

I guess Joe D. knows more than all these programs who OFFERED Clement a scholarship:

    Boston Coll.
    Connecticut
    Florida St.
    Iowa
    Nebraska
    Notre Dame
    Ohio St.
    Penn St.
    Pittsburgh
    Purdue
    Rutgers
    Syracuse
    West Virginia
    Wisconsin

Or maybe they don't really like him...they JUST offered.

Single "A" football doesn't matter...talent matters or lest we forget the players Rochy and Clairton puts out year after year and Clairton's section games are loaded with powderpuffs. Also, if not for the merger to form Central Valley, Robert Foster would be at Monaca, an "A" school. Also, Dorian Johnson plays for Belle Vernon which is the weakest conference in "AAA", a conference that at one point lost over 40 games in a row in the playoffs.

Track times for RB's are NOT as critical as for WR and CB.

Also, track times can be cut with proper technique. Usain Bolt cut his 100m time by .4 seconds in one year with proper technique. I figured the track guru would know that.

      It is true...look it up.

2007 Bolt's demand to run in the 100 m, and he was entered to run the event at the 23rd Vardinoyiannia meeting in Rethymno, Crete. In his debut tournament run, he set a personal best of 10.03 s, winning the gold medal and feeding his enthusiasm for the event.

2008 won Olympics in 9.69 secs

same with his 200 time...dropped nearly half a second from 2007 to 2008. and these are all documented times, which I know you love

  23. Just watched Clement's highlights. Boy, can he fly. He was taking it to the house every time. Also, did you see him come off the edge on D. If he doesn't make it at RB, which I don't see, put a couple lbs on him and make him a LB.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I was really bored, so i watched the spring game on youtube. I dont see where people think the linebacking core is weak. Eric williams and nick grigsby were lightning quick and making plays everywhere, as was jason frimpong. Plus, dan mason, juan price, and todd thomas will be ready for camp. Talk about fast and athletic backers!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm going to have to disagree with that one. Right now there's not one sure thing at LB. Mason is to be looked at with awe for coming back but he's practically on one leg so how much he does this season is still very much in the air. Price has a ton of talent but hasn't put it together yet. Thomas shows signs of being very good but will have to improve still. Frimpong is the size of a corner. And Williams and Grigsby have done nothing yet. Now as far as potential there is some talent there, but like I said, every one of them have questions that need to be answered still.

      Delete
    2. Fair points. I think we can both agree, though, that there is a good amount of talent and athleticism there. Pitt definitely does need a good mlb in this class though

  26. ASU for a fullback...fantastic. This young man needs to have conversation with Henry Hynoski to learn the full value of Fraud's EXPLOSIVE high Octane offense for a fullback.

    ReplyDelete
  27. We got the #4 FB so that's good too. Chans Cox won't be a traditional FB for Graham like Parrish, Giubilato (PITT's probable 2012 starting FB) or Dave Durham (2013 transfer from OSU) will be for Chryst. Graham will make this kid a TE/H-Back.

Chryst will use his FBs much like Wannstedt did with Hynoski.

  29. Pitt fans are never satisfied. Im honestly seeing people complain that pitt told clement they wouldnt recruit any more backs because of derrick green! 1) if green is going to have to compete for pt with other great backs, why would he do it at pitt? 2) chryst isnt recruiting any more backs so its entirely pointless to examen that scenario unless green up and commits to pitt on his own with nobody recruiting him. Honestly, pitt just landed one of the class' best backs and theyre mad because they didnt get THE best that pitt was a longshot for anyways!!!

  33. If we even look at his 100m time and do the math, we would be in trouble offensively because 100 meters equals about 109.5 yards. That is impossible from the line of scrimmage so the person who made the assertion did not keep the parameters within the dimensions of a football field line of scrimmage. Pure brilliance with the analogy. Next we will be quoting times from the mile. Good grief!

One of the most important attributes for elite running backs, is vision. He has that, and football quickness. Coach Chryst will get the job done. I have great confidence in that, always have. January commitments make for greater cohesiveness for these kids. They get seven months to learn the system before going live. Good get, now let's go get some more players!
