Two recruiting notes (And a commitment)

Pitt has offered 6'5" punter/kicker Ryan Winslow of LaSalle College in suburban Philadelphia.  So for the guy who keeps asking about kickers, there you go.

Also, Paul Chryst's nephew, John Strauser, a 6'4 240 pound DE from Champaign, IL, has chosen Purdue over Pitt.

ADDED:  Winslow has committed to the Panthers, making him the ninth commitment for Chryst.

  1. Chris,
Is there any hope that Chryst and Rudolph can get Dorian Johnson back on campus to snag him away from UPS or is Dorian set on his decision?

I knew you would say that...a lot of kids don't want to play for their relatives. Hell, Kugler doesn't even want to live with his dad, that's why he's going away to college. At least according to you.

They just recruited about 4 players that need to add 40 lbs or so....
Chryst likes height more than anything else..
so, he will convert the kicker to a lineman...

    2. Holy jeez! You don't think 16 -17 yr old HIGH SCHOOL KIDS will put on 40lbs or so with 3 yrs of D1 weight training? Why do these KIDS have to be 6'4" 290 pounders when they are KIDS to impress people? Can't we just kick back and watch these slow little pussy cats grow into Panthers? I didnt think so... Carry on

    good news..
Adams is NOT a one and done!!!
He needs to work on his offensive game... he doesn't look for the ball... his entire offensive game is putbacks from rebounding...

    He is a shotblocking machine..
    and excellent rebounder...
    jump hook is his shot..

    1. Whether he's ready or not doesn't matter. i don't understand why people don't get that. Almost every single player who gets drafted isn't ready. If he is a shot blocking machine and an excellent rebounder he'll be a top 5 next year. Hell, if he's neither of those things he'll still probably be a top 5 next year.

      Delete
    2. That's exactly right Chris - the number one pick in the NBA draft on Thursday is just that - a shot blocking and rebounding machine and little offense...Anthony Davis from UK.

    3. Stats on rivals show Adams with 15pts, 13 reb, 8 blocks.

It seemed like he had double digit blocks... probably another 10 in shot altering...
it didn't seem like he scored 15.
Robinson had a discussion with Adams.. Robinson wanted Adams to post up so he can pass to post... Adams told him (it seemed) to pass it to outside... he will just get the rebound and score off rebounds. Robinson was a little frustrated... lol
Zieglar can't shoot FT's... he must be pulled in last 2 min of game.. lol He is a slasher type scorer... didn't see enough of his outside game. Patterson has great court vision.. another Wannamaker.

    11 3-star
    5 2-star

2010 4 4-star (T.J. Clemmings, Bryan Murphy, Mark Myers, Todd Thomas (again))
    19 3-star
    1 2-star

    2011 2 4-star (Khaynin Mosley-Smith, Nicholas Grigsby)
    10 3-star
    9 2-star

2012 4 4-star (Adam Bisnowaty, Daysean Rippy, Rushel Shell, Chad Voytik)
    10 3-star
    2 2-star

Avg. 2.95 stars, overall record 49-38, conference record 28-21, bowl record 2-2

Average recruits bring an average record unless you are an above average head coach...the jury is still out on Chryst.

    Wannstedt was hired about the same time Chryst was...he got 13 of 23 recruits with 1 4-star, 6 3-stars, 6 2-stars and Chryst got 7 of 16 recruits with 1 4-star, 4 3-stars, 2 2-stars

  8. And more boring stats to show that Pitt hasn't gotten the "elite" prospects from the WPIAL since the Wanny era began:

    Wanny 2005-2010
    3 5-stars and he went 1-3
    29 4-stars and he went 9-29

    Fraud 2011
    2 4-stars and he went 0-2

    Chryst 2012
    4 4-stars and he went 3-4

and in 2013 there are 4 4-stars and so far he is 0-2 with 2 undecided

and in 2010, after the 10-win season Wanny went 0-6 in the WPIAL on 4-stars unless you count Todd Thomas again

batting average just a little above 30%

Quip has produced starters for Pitt...
Quip has produced NFL 1st round draft picks for Pitt in the last 10 years (Revis & Baldwin).

So, why is Chryst so far up Gateway and Clariton a$$ and Gateway and Clariton have yet to produce D-1 starter!!! Seems they are over-rated!!!

    3. And you're not giving him enough credit for keeping it. They didn't decommit, so they must like him. It's not just about relationships in recruiting, it's also about location and a myriad of other things. It sounds like with Johnson, he may like the country atmosphere more than the city atmosphere. He is from Belle Vernon which is nowhere near the city. Don't know about Henry or Fields. Maybe the coaches from those schools are kissing his butt, cause we know Coach Z won't.

  10. Different Anonymous posting...Stockett wasn't offered a spot by Pitt. Whoever is left (hasn't jumped off the ledge),it's time for you to do a reality check. Why would you come to Pitt when you can play in the B10? Any opposing coach in his right mind will use the lack of stability (DW,Miami Mistake, TG) and lack of fan support as a reason to not come to Pitt. Therefore any person that thinks this is about HCPC and his staff has never had to build an organization, it isn't easy. Once Chryst starts winning (and he will win) the recruiting battle will be easier. Get behind the man and the University.

    1. Agree with you. Pitt’s football program has been the punch-line to a bad joke for the past couple of years. It started with the Dave Wannstadt resignation/firing fiasco and then escalated into the two week long sitcom that was the Mike Haywood show. Todd Graham was more than happy to continue the nonsense by bringing his traveling circus to town for a one year run. His most memorable feat during his stop-over was to notify the team via e-mail of his immediate departure following a highly forgettable season. Don’t forget that during this time Pitt actually did manage to qualify for a Sports Illustrated top 25 list which was in the category of teams that had the most police arrests in a season.

All the while the WPIAL kids had a front row seat for the entire show. And people wonder why Chryst can’t convince guys like Dorian Johnson that Pitt is it.

  18. I am glad that Paul Chryst's nephew chose Purdue. To me, it means that as an Uncle, he may have counseled his nephew to go to a place where he would have a better opportunity to play. Tells me that Shakir and others are more talented. That my friends is looking at the positives. You doom and gloomers make someone like me that typically has diarrhea of the hands to actually stop.

February is many months away ladies. A 9 win year, Coach Chryst's first, without his players, will be extremely encouraging. Heck 8 wins is probably more realistic with the qb situation. The recruits will come.

Hey Joe, glad you got an in depth interview with Adams and pronounced him a multi-year player. Look, the kid has so much film that the NBA would take him in the lottery for sure. The only reason he would stay would be if he really likes the collegiate experience and to develop more offensively. That said, the first couple of years in the NBA allows you to develop your game, or not and be a mult-millionairre. By the way, what is his 40 time? Vertical? You know, the measurables that are required by you before offering a kid? Just sayin....not hatin.

He's got HOPZ... at least 30" vertical.

Also, his wingspan is much longer than 7'0"... much more than Zanna..

40 speed... he wouldn't run it for me... I had my stop clock!! lol

Yeh... I know.. I'm hoping for 2 years from Adams... and the NBA loves rebounders... But if he works on post moves and the look at Adams in the post to score.. he will be 1 and done. That is all he needs to work on.

  19. I love this blog; the diversity regarding the perception of reality really runs the spectrum.

In fact you have to admit none of us really can predict the future especially regarding a kid’s ability to translate his game from the high school to college level, but its fun to try!

Maybe Chryst will succeed, maybe not, but you have to give him a few years to install his system.

Chryst who some have mentioned has a problem with recruiting, I cannot comment on that because I have no first-hand knowledge regarding his strategy. What I know is that Chryst will have problems in selling recruits, it sucks playing in front of a half empty stadium with an apathetic fan base. Pitts “tradition” is essentially gone and Pitt has been mostly irrelevant since the 80’s; the Panthers have had chances but every time the hype of a big game was there, Pitt fell flat on its face.

Chryst has positives to sell a recruit, the facilities, the education, but you know most other programs are selling that too, so he really is a little behind the 8 ball but he can succeed, recruiting is the lifeblood of any program, and so far the recruiting jury is out until February, because kids will change their minds, Pitt might get a few more kids and lose a few on the way.

So relax, kick back and enjoy the season because Chryst inherited a team that is capable of winning 8 games this year and if they do that it shows some stability in the transition in the multiple coaching merry go round and will give him credibility that he can coach. I think right now coaching stability is something this program has to demonstrate.

So please do not ban anyone from this site, I need the daily humor because being a Pitt fan is frustrating and hard and every year the fan base dwindles, at least this forum allows some us to vent and some of us to demonstrate our limited football knowledge.

I really enjoy the forum Chris and the comments.

    Thanks

Do the math: 5-6 (and some years, the MWC makes 7...) "major" conferences -- plus Notre Dame -- vying hard for four seats; and the SEC will do their dead-level best to get two of the four.

Point being, most years the ACC will also be on the list of leagues with no invitation to the party.

Think the SEC pays cash under the table to get players? Just wait until the first scandal breaks on how much they paid to get playoff slots.

      Delete
    3. The SEC, amongst it's other problems, is what ruined the BCS in the first place and caused all the heat on these guys to come up with something else. This reporter, which granted he's a mediot so take it with a grain of salt, thought in five years they'll probably have to bump it up to eight teams in order to appease critics because going to four is going to cause the same problems eventually that picking the top two did.

All the ACC is trying to accomplish is what the Big Eastused to be able to bring to the table when it comes to negotiating TV rights. The Big East basically could go to the networks and tell them if you want broadcast rights for basketball, we then get a seat at the table for football. That's why they took Pitt and the 'Cuse; if UConn wasn't an academic sinkhole it very well may have been UConn and the 'Cuse.
