Paul Zeise stepping away from Pitt football beat

Because his son, Elijah, has been offered a scholarship by Pitt, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Pitt football  writer Paul Zeise will temporarily step away from his beat so there will be no perceived conflict of interest.  Joe D. hopefully can not be reached for comment.

  1. i really respect him for doing this. its clear that hes enjoyed that part of his job and ill miss his pitt coverage

  2. I will miss PZ. I enjoyed his perspective from the "trenches". Chris, who will be replacing Paul?

  3. chris, would you consider being the beat writer for PG?

  5. Love the Joe D comment. I saw this as well and I went sadly to thinking of what Joe D. would say. I was hoping Zeise wouldn't step down but respect him for doing so. Having the local media on your side makes a huge difference in a football program. It was a can't lose for PC.

  6. Must have been my email to Dave Shribman...
But I actually recommended switch with Fittipaldo..
But I've been beating the drum to remove Zeise for several years now....
Trib had DiPaolo cover Pitt basketball and football.... he does a better job than Zeise on the football side.
I like Fittipaldo on the basketball side.

Sam Warner will be covering Pitt football... he covers HS sports and a hodge podge of stuff.

  9. I suspect it will be someone with State Penn ties. The newspaper is anti-Pitt anyway and the main reason I stopped my subscription. My brother and dad also stopped their subscription because of Cook and Smizik's bias against Pitt.

Funny stuff, because we used to have paper routes and deliver for the Pittsburgh Press. Dating myself, but oh well. It helps local (WPIAL) recruiting to see positive stories on the news and in the print media about Pitt and its staff. Unfortunately, Pitt has been on the wrong end of the bias. Best way to correct a bias is through the pocketbook. Doke, you should apply so long as your first article isn't about PC can't recruit crap...lol. Give the boy a chance big daddy.

    1. The PG sports has been on the downhill for years...

Couple that with reporters going elsewhere... DK to Trib, Trib hiring Alan Robinson, etc.
Micco needs to go... and I've been beating that drum with emails to Shirbman.

  10. I switched from the PG to the Trib a long time ago and never looked back...and when Dejan Kovacevic switched from the PG to the Trib, it made it that much better.

That being said, Zeise was a good beat writer for Pitt and I enjoyed his Redshirt Diaries. Definitely a step up over Shelly Anderson, his predecessor.

Looks like Bennett is the real deal...
but then again... he ran track ;).. #2 in Oklahoma.... sub 11:00 in 100m... and he is the Oklahoma Long Jump champion...
R.Shell had problems.. probably needing to adjust to the speed of the game... it aint the wpial with 160# DB's that are slow, slow, slow.

I highly recommend taking a daytrip to Williamsport with your kids to catch some Little League World Series games regardless of who is playing... awesome facilities... Free admission.

Hopefully he has some good contacts with some three or four OL in the Michigan top 40 list that haven't verballed yet. They have some good size. Welcome aboard LUUUUUUUC!!!!!

  22. Another quote from another recruit that being FIRST to offer keeps you in the game.

Tyler Boyd... offer was given by Graham!
Courtesy of Mike White of PG.

Some have said West Virginia might be your top school right now, and what about Pitt? I wouldn't say West Virginia is my tops, but it's a school I'm really interested in because I love their offense and they have a quarterback [recruit] from around here in [Monessen's] Chavas Rawlins. Pitt is in it because they're my hometown school and they were the first to offer. They are definitely in the hunt

    2. pk,
it is in todays paper online...
Mike White typically does this as pre-season, etc annually...
I would guess, interview probably in the past week. Kugler interview was yesterday... funny.. questions on the olympics.

But my point is about being FIRST to offer... especially to those in your backyard... wpial and within 300 miles or so.
This is the 2nd athlete quoted regarding schools being first to offer. Chryst has been very slow offering 2014 recruits of which many are no-brainers.

But hey.. Zeise Jr. got an offer (his first) and he wasn't on anybody's list of top 2014 players out of wpial.
Just look at Doke's review of 2014 athletes a couple months back.. not all have gotten offers from Pitt yet... Zeise Jr. not on the list!!

      Delete
    3. but most if not all of them have pitt offers now, a lot of them their first, and zeise jr is 6'2' and supposedly one hell of an athlete. the other thing is, they are all very interested in pitt. i wont say being the first to offer doesnt help, but by saying chryst cant recruit because he wasnt the first to offer every single good wpial player is a bit ridiculous.

      Delete
    4. Zeise Jr. body of work as a sophmore is not such for a BCS D1 offer.... at this time... whereas other sophmore's warranted an offer. It may be after his Junior year... don't know.
Athletic... based upon what.. that Zeise Jr. is a good basketball player? He never attended a combine.. and he does not run track... ;).. a prerequisite for me for a DB!!!

  23. Regarding 2014 recruiting...
Why important to be first to offer... just look at your competition!!!
Per rivals.. the number of offers to 2014 players...

    Ohio State - 59
    Michigan - 44
    WVU - 43
    Pitt - 15

All 3 will probably have classes ranked higher than Pitt in 2014 because the GET IT!!! They are agressive at going after recruits.

    1. Let me add the following schools to the list...

      Maryland - 42
      Virginia Tech - 34
      Rutgers - 33

      They get it also!!!

      Delete
    2. Although I do agree it's important to show a consistent liking towards the kid from the start, I think it can be done in several ways instead of a first offer. However, an offer is a good way of showing it no doubt.

These players de-commit so much and schools get sanctioned so much a verbal these days don't mean a whole alot.

      Delete
    3. I'm not talking about getting a committment...

I'm talking about "Just Offer"... First... before your competition. Many players are NO BRAINERS to give an offer.
As you can see, the competition gets it!!!
      Chryst and crew don't!!!

Sorry, back on my recruiting soapbox...
This is sales and marketing 101..

as far as verbal committments not having much weight, etc that is another ballgame and discussion.. but, bird in hand better than 2 in the bush. I'm curious as to the stats of decommitts and picking another school... I bet it is less than 5%.

      Delete
    4. no, your not sorry. once again, saying it once or twice through the course of as conversation is fine, even though its not factual, but to say it over and over and over and over doesnt make people agree with you. it just makes people dread looking at the comment section. im not trying to start an argument, im just saying you dont need to repeat the same things 10+ times on each post

      Delete
    5. PK,
The number of offers for 2014 class is FACT...
The issue of being FIRST to offer... 2 players in wpial made comments regarding it that it mattered.. that is FACT...

Regarding... Chryst and crew don't get it regarding recruiting..
Yes... that is opinion supported by facts..
2012 class... if it were not for Voytik... he had a 24 hour window to call the recruits before christmas and didn't..
2013 class... isn't looking good... probably ranked in the 40's... even with the PSU issue.
2014 class... look at the disparity of offers to date... and if you don't think that matters... then your head is in the sand!!

    7. Doesn't get what? People bash him but he is showing facts. When you show facts that recruiting doesn't matter then talk.

      Delete
    8. Would everyone be saying recruiting doesn't matter if all that were signed were 5 star recruits???

So when PC does get a highly ranked kid, which he will, then I don't want to hear any I told you PC can recruit. If you don't care about bad recruits don't care about good ones either.

      Delete
    9. What bad recruit though?
PC and his staff obviously have a different approach then Urban meyer and what some people what him to have. PC is laid back about recruiting. It very well maybe a wrong way of doing it. However, my point is we have not seen any of his kids play any game and there is no proof he has messed up yet. Thus far I think he has done alright and thats just going on recruiting rankings and no real actual tangible evidence. But if you have some proof that the kids the current staff recruited are terrible please provide this and I will change my statements.

      Delete
    10. Not saying bad recruits or anything you said but when its a 1 or 2 star some posters say don't worry about rankings then when he gets a 4 or 5 stars the same people claim what a great get it was. Can't have it both ways. Either care about all rankings or none.

      Delete
    11. yes joe, those are facts. but just because he hasnt offered as many kids doesnt mean he cant recruit. it just means hes more selective with who he offers scholarships to. as for rankings, ive said it before and ill say it again. star rankings do not matter.

      Delete
    12. i shouldnt say they dont matter. they matter very little and are at best a ROUGH guide to see the skill level of kids at a high school age

    1. I thought rankings didn't matter?

      Delete
    2. When did I ever say rankings don't matter?? hmm didn't think so. I think a 4/5 star guy has a better shot at being a great player than a 2 star guy. I think that's just common sense. Coaching, different developmental times, pure effort and desire, health, and coaching all play a significant role. so rankings aren't the end all be all but they mean something. Anyways, I was pointing to the rankings because those are the facts that Joe D bases his arguments around...plain and simple.

do you have an opinion Anon? Would be interested to hear it.

      Delete
    3. my point about rankings, that they matter very little, is that 4/5 star guys are ranked that high and succeed because they are good. they are not good because they are 4/5 stars. its too inconsistant. and people often misunderstand what the rankings mean. most 2 and three stars are only ranked that low because they are raw or they dont play great competition. their ceiling might be just as high as higher ranked kids. this is strait from espns tom luginbill when he reviewed his two star ranking of tyrann mathieu

      Delete
    4. oh and Chris, you need to do the same if it plays out like we both know it probably will. You've taken a negative slant with hiring/recruiting of PC from the start. Don't deny it. That's fine, because you are just expressing your concerns...BUT gotta admit when you're wrong. I certainly will. I see an offensive class with WR Foster TE Orndoff OT Johnson RB Clement and QB Chapman and I think wow. Challingsworth, Soto, and Jarrett are all underrated and we got some sizeable prospects too. Two solid kickers as well. I see a lot of positive progress with a program in a serious rut. PC is doing a good job. My take and I'm taking it to the bank...

      Delete
    5. Im just saying how do you know he is doing a good job or a bad job recruiting if not for rankings? The top ranked school year in and year out are the schools with the top recruiting classes. There is no debating it. If PC gets top recurits then that will be a good thing but right now it doesn't look good. Its still early though and can change.

You're right, if someone runs track it has zero effect on how they play football and why on earth he thinks anyone in pitts athletic department cares what he email but have to give him credit for being consistant and he does read lots.

      Delete
    6. again, those kids get 5 stars because they are clearly the best AT THAT TIME. they are not the best because of what theyre ranked. if i made a recruiting site and gave dorian johnson 5 stars, thats not what makes him successful. hes 5 stars because hes clearly that good

      Delete
    7. Yea, that sums it up nicely pk. I think the most important thing is to get smart character guys with talent who are willing to improve and trust their coaches. I see that in guys like Soto. Not a 4/5 gut but could certainly end up as one who should have been. My point is Chryst is getting these guys all the while our program has been mighty unstable. ACC move helps a lot however. and I think some of those big names like Foster and Johnson are of the same ilk and are coming as well.

      Delete
    8. Does rivals or scouts havean average ranking for all nfl players when they came out of high school? Would be interesting to see.

      Delete
    9. I haven't taken a negative slant. I've told you what I have discovered with Chryst's recruiting, and it wasn't always positive up until this point. Not horrible, but not great either. I just told you the truth, but some of you guys don't want to hear the truth. Some of you are ridiculously optimistic and some are ridiculously pessimistic. The truth is, Chryst has done okay so far on the recruiting trail, but he has work to do in some facets. This isn't just my opinion, it's the opinion of many inside people. Do I and those inside sources think he is a lost cause? No. We all think he can and probably will improve, but the first eight months or so have been far from perfect, and far from awful, and it's my job to report that.

      Delete
    10. Good ? anon. I'm not sure...but if someone took the time to analyze the star rankings of all the guys on pro bowl rosters last year in the nfl I think it would be quite clear that they mean something.

      Delete
    11. Love your blog chris. wish you posted more often.

My only concern is that old stevie pete will fire PC after 4 years if he doesn't win the ACC and we'll have to start all over again.

    12. I will be posting more often during football and basketball season. In the offseason there's only so much to talk about.

      Delete
    13. would love if you talked pitt wrestling too. That should be pitts best sport.

      Delete
    14. I have to disagree with you on this one Chris. I do think you emphasize the negative and sometimes forget to convey that this is a first time head coach coming into a tenuous at best situation. Mistakes are to be made by a incoming freshman. Same goes for coach. What's important is he's changing the culture at Pitt...I believe. He's not pampering recruits or players. He's making sure he finds guys with work ethic, smarts, talent, and team first mentalities. If you want 20 letters a day or a hat and are upset if you don't get that attention then go somewhere else. Good luck. This is Pittsburgh. We come to work. Remember 60 minute men from the Steelers? That's the mentality he's instilling. BTW I think that before you saw any of the positives or negatives from his recruiting thus far, and saw a class that included Chapman, Clement, Johnson, Foster, Orndorff and the other solid sleeper potential pieces...you would be very happy. but I will agree with you that a game has not been coached, letters have not been signed, and what will happen at Pitt is a matter to be played out. I like the direction PC is taking, a lot actually. You have your doubts, which again is your opinion and completely valid. That's where we differ. and in no way am I saying you should not report what you confirm or sugarcoat things. That would be unprofessional. You do what you do. It's an informative site even though it drives me crazy sometimes. All I'm saying is as respectful Pitt fans we need to stand by what we say or how we say it. Nothing more or nothing less. Commenters here, and of course not all, seem to bend and shape things to fit their arguments and if and when they don't jive with what happens there is never any semblance of ownership.

      Delete
    15. Ok, first of all, you keep adding Foster and Johnson to your list and neither has committed to Pitt. If they do, then it's an excellent class and I will be the first to say so. I never said Chryst wouldn't end up with an excellent class. In fact, I went out of my way at least a dozen times to say that, and to also say that I was specifically talking about how Chryst was recruiting up until now.

As for giving him time, it's a fact that the first full recruiting class for a new head coach is usually an excellent class because he can sell those new recruits on being his recruits.

Bottom line, like I said for eight months now, I am not saying he won't have an excellent class when all is said and done. And I have also praised players like Orndoff and Clement like crazy. Just because I don't go crazy over every single recruit, that doesn't mean I think Chryst is a failure. It's just being rational. The truth is, most recruits he gets, just like most recruits for most programs, are kids who could go either way in their development. So I'm not going to heap praise for him getting a Carson Baker or an Aaron Reese when the fact is, it's a total unknown how well they will do, or not do. The ones who do stand out, like Orndoff or Clement, will get my thumbs up because they are part of the 10% that stand out more.

      Delete
    16. I do think Foster and Johnson will commit. Better than 50/50 for both imo. Didn't mean to imply that they were signed sealed and delivered. You are not saying Chryst is a failure. I get it. You're open to the possibility that he will succeed. You're collecting the facts and not jumping to conclusions. That's prudent. Yet, let's be honest. Deep down you don't think he will. You were not enthused with the hire, don't believe he has the personality to be successful, and your tone and language suggest as much. I calls em as I see em. Not criticizing you. Seriously. I just think I see PC as the right fit at Pitt to be successful while you're more skeptical. Really no argument here. Just difference of opinion. and fwiw, I look at his progress NOW at Pitt just like you to inform my opinion. I've seen a lot of good. Especially in building a foundation of football similar to what we are used to in Western PA. Will he have the time to do so. None of us knows. Let's hope the team can win some games and recruiting decisions to get the ball rolling in the right direction.

      Delete
    17. Well, I don't hide my opinions on anything. I will flat out tell you what I think. I wouldn't have hired him if it were up to me. I think if Pitt wants to truly be an elite program like they say they do then they have to aim higher. But that does not mean I think he will fail.

I think there were guys who were more of a sure thing and guys who had higher upsides. But in no way am I saying he will fail. He could be the next Vince Lombardi for all I know. But if I had to guess, I think because he is an offensive dynamo he will probably win 8 or so games for Pitt just like Wannstedt and Harris. And ultimately that's what I don't get about the hire. And that's that, he is a nice guy who will probably win with honor but not win huge. It's the same as Wannstedt and Harris who most agreed were great guys and great representatives of the university, but ultimately didn't win enough. So to me the best Chryst can do is be Harris and Wannstedt level.

And if that's the level he can do then I don't see the point of getting rid of Harris and Wannstedt. It's just the same damn guy over and over again, and I fear that 4 or 5 years from now Pitt will be firing another 8 win nice guy, and it's Groundhog Day all over again.

      Delete
    18. There was a lot of repeating myself in that rant but you get the point.

      Delete
    19. Yes, I get your point. I hope we've found a coach who can take us to that next level. We will see. At the end of the day we're all for the same thing--A football team we can be proud of that wins big. and I'll end it at that.

      Delete
    20. Doke with all do respect Chyrst hasn't coached a game yet and you are equating him to Harris and Wanny. What do you base that on? Do you know something we don't ?

      Delete
    21. He's a great guy and a great coordinator, but it's not apparent that he has that special thing that will help him turn Pitt into a national power. He may prove that he does, but it's not an insult to say that he doesn't. There are very few that do have it.

      Delete
    22. You were not insulting but you don't think PC will be more successful than the previous coaches. PC appears to have ll the intangibles to be successful but you think he's missing that special thing. I'm not being a dick but what is that special thing? Many on this post like I respect your opinion. The only way we know if he has IT is if his teams are successful and produce on the field. Multiply the wins and eliminate the losses!
Previous articles show that many thought that Saban or Meyer didn't have it at first. Luv ya Doke!

      Delete
    23. I disagree that Chryst seems to have all of the intangibles needed. If he did, he would have been hired as a head coach years ago. There's a reason why so many programs passed on him. Time will tell if they were right to do that, and time will tell if he does indeed have that special thing. All I can give is my opinion. I said he's a great offensive mind, a great guy, and a probably 8-win coach. Yet for some reason many of you get mad that I won't say that he doesn't strike me as that special kind of coach that will make Pitt a national championship contender. Some act like I'm saying he's awful when nothing could be further from the truth. A great guy, a terrific offensive mind, and an 8-win coach is pretty damn good.

  26. Not to beat a dead horse but we all know that Wisconsin's recruiting rankings have been significantly lower than Pitt's in recent years. I think we'd also all agree that Wisconsin has had a lot more success on the football field. Anybody disagree?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. no please go ahead AP. Joe D has already beaten his horse to a bloody pulp and we need a new one. As of now he's just pounding on the ground like a child in a tantrum.

      Delete
    2. I don't follow Wisconsin but what good teams have they beaten? I know they've had a good record but Ohio state, penn state, and michigan have been down lately. Just wondering, not trying to stir anything up.

      Delete
    3. Just because it happened at Wisconsin, that doesn't mean it will happen at Pitt. It happened for Pitt, too, when Jackie Sherrill was the head coach, but how did it work when Foge Fazio followed him? Fazio was on the same staff and everything was done the same way, yet the wheels fell off. We have no idea how good, or bad, Chryst is yet as a head coach, but how successful Wisconsin was when he was there has little to do with it.

    4. AP was using it as an example that teams in the mid 40's recruiting rankings do make rose bowls and BCS's. I agree with Chris that he hasn't done great or bad. His approach cannot be confirmed yet. Yes I tend to be more of an optimist but there is not a player that I don't like that PC recruited thus far. Granted if we miss out on the Dorian Johnson's and Robert Foster's of the world consistently over a 2-3 year period and the players suck that he has recruited then I will hold Chryst accountable on the recruiting front. PC has proved he can recruit guys like Luke MaClean who is a 3 star recruit with good size, good speed, can tackle, wants to come to Pitt, and looks like a genuine football player. I will have patients with kids like him and PC sorry if some of you can't. What's your solution fire PC. Yeah that will help.

    5. This is a perfect time to talk about reality and optimism. I agree that right now every kid has the potential to be good. But they also have the potential to be bad. The cold hard facts are that at least half of every class will not end up being good players. So right now, a fans sees the best case scenario in every player so the class looks great to them. But the same can be said about every class in the country. They are all loaded with similar prospects. It's great as a fan to always expect the best of every prospect and every class. I just get perturbed when I'm viewed as negative for simply being realistic by saying this class is just okay right now. The truth is, at least half of these kids probably won't pan out. And the more elite prospects you get, the better your odds are of having them pan out.

    3. Yeh Shell the 5 star is behind Graham a four star recruit, Bennet a two star recruit, and Coey Davis a 1 star. It is way to early to tell however.

What you said earlier Chris is exactly right. Maybe I wasn't saying my own opinions clearly but that's essentially what I was trying to put across.

    4. i think it hinges on ray grahams health. if at the start of the season graham isnt himself shell would get more carries. if graham is healthy, i dont see shell playing much at all with graham, bennett, and crockett

  29. Star rankings are a joke. Mark Myers was a 3/4, Dion Lewis was a 1. How'd that work out?

Bottom line, rankings don't mean a thing. If you play at a big-time program, and contribute, your ranking will be higher. If you play at a small high school, your ranking is lower. It's all about what schools "are in bed" with Rivals/Scout/MaxPreps, etc.

  30. Didn't realize it was well known that Bennett ran track. Thanks for making me feel less adequate.

    1. James Conner out of erie Mcdowell just committed, to start the recruiting debate up again. Don't know much about him a another good size defensive linebacker or end. Two Stars and unrated according to a few sites. Maybe questionable, but of course we all don't know how it will end up.

    2. rivals has him at a shade under 4 stars.

  33. He's rated the 12th best prospect in PA by rivals and our class rank is now 35, tops in the Big East, one behind Miami and better than both WVU and PSU.
