Cincinnati 34 Pittsburgh 10

What can I say?  It was another debacle by the Pitt football team who are now 0-2.  The offense was not good, but once again the defense was disastrous giving up 461 yards, including 257 yards on the ground.  The Bearcats averaged an amazing 8.6 yards a carry.

On offense, Tino Sunseri was his usual mediocre self though his numbers look inflated because of garbage time stats.  On the night, he completed 25 of 38 passes for 285 yards.  He was also sacked 5 times and threw an interception in the end zone.

Ray Graham led Pitt with 102 yards on 18 carries, a 5.7 average.  Rushel Shell got his first carries and ended up with 24 yards on 7 carries while Isaac Bennett had 24 yards on 5 carries.  Both Mike Shanahan and Devin Street led all receivers with 5 catches, for 59 and 54 yards respectively.  Hubie Graham, who many, including me, thought would have a big season caught just one pass for 8 yards.

The Panthers are now 0-2 and next host highly ranked Virginia Tech on September 15th.

  1. My posts following the ysu game remain: you are only as good as your weakest link; Pitt has many weak links.

Does anyone still think good coaching will help this team?

Tino is what he is. Let's leave it alone. He tries but just can't help it.

When was the last time you heard an announcer (Jesse Palmer) say after just two defensive series "Pitt has a really slow defensive line.".

tJ Clemmons should have sat the remaining game after that ridiculus personal foul.

  2. Oakland, we have a problem!

Must admit at this point that coaching is showing itself to be a problem. Mostly in terms of deciding what players get on the field.

Who really thinks Pitt has good D-1 talent on either offense or defense?

Last week the defensive line was horrible. Today it started out where it left off but really started to come around late into the second and beyond.

Today the big problem was on the other side... the offensive line.

Proves that last week was a fluke with Tino not getting any sacks... mainly due to YSU sitting back in order to concentrate on stopping the run.

The guy comes up empty when pressured in the pocket. Like we didn’t know this already.

At a loss as to why Tino wasn't sat down for the fourth quarter.

Chryst has got to make a change at quarterback if he wants any chance at winning multiple games this season. The offensive line is just not good enough to give Tino the kind of time he needs to make a throw.

Play Anderson. If he doesn’t deliver immediately, mix in some plays with Voytik.

No sense in holding Voytik out becauce come next year with Savage and Chapman both in camp, Voytik’s window of opportunity may close.

  5. That bad holding call on Pitt's TD ended any hope. I do not feel like watching a bad Pitt team and have Sunseri over throw any open WR that is more than 14 yds down field. I would like to see Voy... now. V. Tech is going to beat us bad. Cinny was not that good of a team.

  6. This coaching staff is predictably terrible given what we've seen over the past few months. Sadly, a coaching change within the next 3 years would only make things worse in light of the unbelievable fiasco that has been Pitt's handling of its football program since 2010 (really 1981, but realistically speaking...).

Life is unfairly cruel to Pitt fans. They suggest this will be the situation at Penn State, but it'll be 8-10 years until Pitt is back to even moderate success. And we didn't even have a molestation scandal, just complete administrative incompetence. Chryst will get three years because Pitt has backed itself into a corner and really has no choice. Only then, under the cover of total apathy towards the program (as in the type that existed in 1996) can Pitt hope to clean house again and completely start over. By then the talent level will be terrible on a team at the bottom of the ACC. At the earliest, 3-5 years AFTER that, it'll be possible to have a retooled, restocked team that can compete. Possible, not necessarily probable.

    One thing is undeniably apparent:

Steve Pederson has to be held accountable for this. And I've seriously defended this guy through the firing of Wannstache, and the obviously handcuffed position he is in given the financial constraints the university has on paying coaches. He's not selecting from a pool of candidates where the going rate is $4 million annually. Hell, Pitt isn't even offering anyone like Jim Grobe more than Wake Forest would. He has no shot at hiring anyone above an assistant or non-BCS program. That's a tough spot.

But he hasn't hired ANYONE of significance beyond Ben Howland. Walt Harris had moderate success, but really, what did he ever win? Wannstedt won as much and it wasn't good enough. CLEARLY his handling of the program over the past two years has been a serious detriment to the football program. In fact he took a mediocre program and trashed it. It's ruined now.

The university, specifically Nordenberg has expressed unwavering support of Pederson. It's obviously going to take an earth-shattering event to shake the AD from his position. Nothing is more "shattering" than selling less than 10K season ticket packages and an alumni base and student body that ignores its football program. That day of reckoning is coming, but sadly not fast enough.

  7. The team was bad.. But I also saw some awful penalties called. The Chris Jacobson holding call in the red zone? Ridiculous drive killer.

They definitely were terrible, but I think they could have made a game of it. Cinci isn't exactly a world beater either.

  8. Reminds me of Dave's first season.
"We have got to get faster."
We really miss Todd Thomas and Price at linebacker.
They were a little bit better this week, so maybe by week 6 they can win a game.
I hate to say this but Tino should have moved on with his life's work. He has not had a fair shot and his college career has flat lined. Has he shown any improvement since the day he walked on to campus?
It's going to be a long year, but everyone needs to give Coach Paul Chryst his chance to win.

  11. Chris,

I save my irrational %$*^@$ words and frustration (most of it anyway) for the pantherlair but MY GOD, what are we going to do?

Clearly, Chryst is in way over his head. You responded to one of my posts after the YSU game saying they would never fire Chryst after this season.

What if we only get say two wins or God forbid, one or none?

Seriously, can't...won't they go in a new direction?

If, they fire Pederson - I would be in favor of hiring either Wannstedt or Mark May as the AD.

Is there ANY chance the administration lets Pederson go and hires either Wannstedt or May?

Nordenberg loved Wannstedt but obviously let Pederson do the job on him.

I want to know from you since you have and had a pulse on this program that we love - IF Chryst wins say under 3 games:

    1) - what would YOU do?
    2) - what would you expect the administration to do?

    Less than 3 wins - please respond?^^^

    Thanks Chris

    1. My rambling thoughtsSeptember 7, 2012 at 8:02 AM

The university has been conducting experiments regarding their football program since Sherrill clashed with Ed Bozik, essentially Bozik frustrated Sherrill so much, Sherrill resigned and moved on. ]

Sherrill was 50-9-1 in 5 seasons with Pitt, since then no coach at Pitt has even come close to duplicating his success.

Since then the Pitt Administration has hired the following since 1982:

Fazio – terminated, never a head coach again

Gottfried – terminated, never a head coach again

Hackett – terminated, USC hired him then terminated him, after that Pete Carroll turned USC into a dynasty

Majors – round II – resigned/terminated, never a head coach again

Harris – resigned but he was forced out by Jeff Long, Stanford hired and fired him, Stanford hired Harbaugh and is a national power in football

Wanny – resigned/terminated, he is presently coaching in the NFL

The guy from Miami Ohio – terminated, not sure what he is up too

Graham – resigned, if ASU beats Illinois this weekend they will be ranked in all polls.

Chryst – soon to be terminated after the 2013 season, unless he gets to a bowl game in 2013

9 coaches in 30 years, the administration has to hire someone (another AD) who knows how to manage a big time football program, Gottfried, Harris and Wanny won and were good college coaches but in the administration’s eyes it was not good enough.

If Pitt wants to be a perennial top 25 program it starts at the top, now if Nordy is a micromanager and handcuffs Peterson then how can you judge Peterson?

I am not sure what is going on in the Pitt administration and who ultimately hired Chryst but Chryst was a horrible hire, someone above has to take responsibility for this fiasco, Pitt football is a joke and right now the program is in trouble.

    2. I thought Chryst and crew stength was "coaching em up"...
      We know they can't recruit...

Chryst is not a leader.... that is why he was never hired for HC after sooo many interviews.
He needs fire in the belly... Cowher, Tomlin, Ditka, etc..
I actually loved seeing him rip Clemmings a new one... it's about time we see that in Chryst..

At this point... Gardner is a MUST win.... by a large margin...
if not... Chryst and crew are gone at the end of the season.
I changed my prediction.... O'fer in Big East play this season.

    4. Joe D, It's about time we see that in Chryst? It is only his second game.
Personally i still think he will be a winner, but maybe needs better assistants for the defensive side. Once we have a legit QB the offense will take off, and by the way Shell is going to be tremendous.

  12. I've been saying since the Haywood fiasco that Pederson needed to go. He has completely destroyed a program what was in contention regularly for BE championships. Pederson supporters will say well he helped built the Pete and other athletic facilities. Anyone with half a brain would have done the same thing. Look around the college landscape - every program is trying to out do the next with bigger and better facilities.

Until Pederson is let go, this program will be the laughing stock of the ACC.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Get ready for a 2-10 record. It calls for Chryst to be fired, but no way do you go with four coaches in a four-year period.

I want to think next season will be better with Savage or Voytik at quarterback and plenty of players who gained experience returning. I think that will be key - young players coming back to the same system the following year. Three systems in three years is just too much.

Best-case scenario is the players improve throughout the year and squeeze out five wins while guys like Voytik,Biz, Roberts, Bradley, etc. can preserve redshirts.

  14. This isn't a coaching issue... the talent level on this team stinks PERIOD. Do they even have LB's? I swear #3 is a safety. BTW where are the DB's... don't see em on the screen ever... and not sure if they have LB's in the game. Worst LB's I've ever seen on a D1(?) team. Every tackle they make is 7 yards down-field.

The OL is horrible, and the QB is a deer in headlights. Vince Lombardi couldn't coach this bad news bears crew.

Don't think Chryst forgot how to call a game once he became head coach. He's working with the inferior product he's been given.

Gonna be a looooong next few years.

    1. This is a coaching issue...
The game plans (offense and defense) are sooooo basic... so high schoolish...
The team lacks strength on the lines..
      The team lacks team speed...
      They can't tackle...
      They can't block...
They can't catch the ball when it hits them in the hands..
Then look at the recruiting and the 2012 class and 2013 class...

Houston.... we have a coaching problem...

      Delete
    2. Maybe the reason the schemes are so basic is because the players can't comprehend or execute more advanced schemes.

This is a recruiting issue. They just don't have the talent.

I say play the young guys now... if you're gonna lose anyway lose with the future.

  15. It is painful to watch this team right now and as much as I want to see a light at the end of the tunnel I don't think I can. The university and fans deserve so much better than this. Can we blame the play on the turmoil through the past 3 years?

The lack of awareness by Tino on that play before half is completely unacceptable for a quarterback who has started this many football games (nevermind that he didn't even look the way of a wide open Devin Street). I have no problem with Chryst trying to run another play there, especially with how our defense was playing. Speaking of which, when did our defense start playing like swiss cheese? The biggest telling stat for me is that we have no turnovers in these first 2 games. Not even close. Our defense needs to start flying around instead of sitting back waiting for the action to come to them.

I was pleased with how our runningbacks played, minus a few missed blocks in pass protection. If our defense wasn't getting us in a hole early I was recommend a Graham/Shell combo all game long to take Tino out of the equation.

This program needs to be built back up from the bottom. I'm always one for optimism, but if we continue to play like this can we blame top recruits for not wanting to come to Pitt?

I am all for giving Chryst time and believe he can eventually be a good head coach, but I need to see progress... something that was not evident from Game 1 to Game 2

    ReplyDelete
  16. What should the defensive game plan be?
    1. DB's to press WR's off the line.
    2. Go 1v1 with DB's and Free Safety being backup.
    3. Everyone else in the box... blitz on passing situations..

Plan... stop the run... have them beat you with the pass. At this point.... everything under 10 yards is wide open... the run is wide open..

  18. Simple question Chris...are the players really as bad as they look (in other words, has the past few years of lost recruiting classes due to multiple coaching changes finally taken their toll) or are the coaches at fault for the embarrassing performance of the team?

Also, I’m 57 years old. If I eat right, exercise and limit my alcohol consumption is there any possibility that I will live long enough to see the football program become relevant again?

  20. As someone correctly pointed out last night on Twitter, 7 of the 8 defensive linemen on the two-deep were consensus 4-star or better recruits. Jacobsen was an Army All American. How much better does Pitt need to recruit for people to realize that there's enough talent on this team to win most of the games on their schedule THIS season. The coaching carousel has destroyed any chance of continuity with this team. Hence, poor fundamentals, players out of position, missed blocking assignments, slow, hesitant play.

It's one thing to lose, it's quite another to be a national joke.

And they added more salt to the wound: they said, live and on national TV, that Chryst lacks passion.

With Tino the Magnificent at QB, the only game I can see us winning is maybe (maybe not) Gardner Webb.

  24. What's the Guinness world record for killing coaches? Tino the Incompetent is at two and counting.

He left at least 21 points on the field, which certainly would have changed the way it played out, maybe even changed the outcome.

I know it wasn't all Tino's fault, but a lot of it was.

Season's ruined, you play seniors over underclassmen because their experience is supposed to help you win. Tino's one of the team's biggest liabilities (perhaps THE biggest...).

  25. Maybe the plans are so basic because they don't have the skills. Just a thought. Think about it. The lines are suspect at best. The DB's can't press cause they can't cover. Sunseri is who we thought he was. WR's underachieve. Only good aspects are K, P, RB, and TE. AND with all that said, they very easily could have been tied in the 3rd quarter after the field goal.

They are on their 4th permanent head coach in 3 years, and are coming off a 6-7 season and some people thought they were going to be good. It wasn't going to happen.

Right now Chryst is in over his head. That doesn't mean the game will always be too big for him. Saban was barely .500 at MSU his first 4 years, Jamie Dixon couldn't get hired by Wright St., and I could give you a list of a ton of other guys who got out the block slow. And no, I'm not comparing Chryst to those guys, but geez, I ain't jumping off the bridge after 2 games.

Right now, they just aren't very good, although I have seen some improvements in some areas (no one was suspended. LOL)

    1. But here's the flaw in your logic (by not playign Voytik or Anderson or you or ABT): that means that guy plays next year anyway, but when they're green as grass.

Which means we'll go 1-11 this year and 1-11 next year.

But if we play ABT this year when we'll be 1-11 anyway, we have a chance to be decent next year because we'll be starting an experienced QB.

I can't think of a single solitary upside reason to play Tino another snap this year except to make Daddy Sal happy.

      Delete
    2. I agree Anon. There is no reason to rush Voytik out until he is ready. Why shatter the kid's confidence? Does anyone honestly think that putting Bostick on the field before he was ready was a good idea? If Voytik is the future leader of this program, let's make sure we take care of him.

      Delete
    3. Voytik is still learning to play in a pro-style offense after running the spread in high school. My thinking is the staff wants to redshirt Voytik and have Savage start next season.

Savage should soak up the offense this year and with his college experience be the guy in 2013. He's clearly better than Sunseri, or I pray that he is.

Let Tino take all the hits in this "throw-away year."

  27. Let's agree not to discuss how many 4 star guys there are on the team. TJ Clemmons is not a good football player - maybe someday he will be. Jacobson was another 4 star who has failed to live up to billing, although it is unfortunate the injuries may have taken its toll (Nix before him too was an high school AA who underachieved). Sheard and Romeus were 2-3 star guys. Mustakas and Mick Williams were not highly rated and they excelled because they had speed, non stop motors, and football sense. It is not always about coaching. How could Pat Bostick be a 5 star guy with a nerf ball arm? It is what it is. The overwhelming majority of the starting 22 are not good football players. It is irrelevant now that Hale was a 4 star recruit. Yes, you have a greater chance of striking gold with more 4-5 star recruits. But Pitt really does not get those guys. Remember, LeSean McCoy only came to Pitt because Coker got fired from Miami and Shell is only at Pitt because he had a child he wanted to be closer.

    2. Star rating matter. You cherry pick low rated guys that make it and forget the tons of highly ranked guys that do. There are a reason the top teams have the top ranked classes.

Not every 4-5 star pans out but the odds they do are higher than 2-3.

McCoy only came because he hurt his ankle senior year. That's two things that you have lied about. Keep up the good work.

  28. What a whiney group of characters. Jody, I agree. Graham is laughing in Arizona. Why? Becuase he knew the cupboard was bare and that Steve Pederson is not an AD. Steve Pederson killed Nebraska and is killing Pitt.

Chryst - He got it right. I can't question anything he has done to this point. Now, if he allows Tino to be our qb after that performance last night, we have a problem. Why? The failure to put points on the board at the end of the frst half falls on tino. Pitt had a first and goal with 25 seconds to go. When the ball was spotted, the clock started. Tino lost 13 seconds before snapping. Watch the film before blaming the coach ladies. I swear, tino didn't know the clock had started. That was the failure, not the attempt to get a TD with 5 seconds left.

Look, Pitt could only score 17 with tino at qb against YSU. With 5 seconds left in the half, Pitt was already down 17. They needed a TD. Period. Good call, Coach Chryst. I support that decision. Chryst ripping Clemmings = awesome! There is fire, you all just don't see it because you want pitt to win so bad.

As far as recruiting, it has been fine. Tell me again how attractive Pitt is to a 5 star?? Tell me Jody! Why would a 5 star or 4 star come to a place where there is already a goundswell to replace the coach. You all are a bunch of dumbasses (sorry Chris for the compliment as that was being too kind too many). The Fan base lack of support leads to instbility in a program and you all just don't get it. Losing Paul Chryst after 1, 2, 3 or 4 seasons will make it worse for recruiting and you all are smart enough to know that. What opposing coach won't use all this against Pitt in recruiting?

Bunch of freaking democratic fan base expecting handouts and success without work and dedication! You all have it backwards. Pederson does need to go. If you need further proof, look at the AD history's of the top 10 programs in the polls right now. Our AD does not remotely look like any of them in terms of experience, expertise and knowledge. Yet the administration allows it to continue. In order to get better, you look at what the best programs do. It starts with the AD.

If I had to predict Pederson may have his head on a platter after this year. Get a new AD in and PC gets 1 more year to prove himself before the AD go out and gets his own guy.

Let's face it, there's no reason not to think this season is over.

    1. What went wrong is Wanny, Graham and now Chryst thought they were entering into a quality 1A program only to find out it was a three ring circus. 2ndly all 3 of those coaches were hell bent on a "system" when in fact they should simply find their fastest, speediest players and get them out on the field at once.
I can tell you this............ under NO circumstances would a coach like Spurrier sit back and watch Tino commit the same blunders over and over! There seems to be no accountability in the PITT QBing corps. Basically no accountability at any position. If the team is gonna lose BIG then they may as well start figuring out who wants to play ball and sell out and who the posers really are.

  31. Pitt is a bad team we can agree, but the one thing I have noticed through 3 coaching changes is that they fail to put their best athletes on the field at once. Notice when they were splitting Saddler out wide and had Graham and another RB out there things began to open up on offense. Forget throwing to the lumbering Tight Ends, Tino doesn't get ample time to do that. It may be time to throw caution to the wind and allow another QB a shot. Tino shows some flashes of gusto but equally flashes of idiocy. The double and triple clutching are a habit he can't break. I just can't get over how badly coached, undisciplined, and for the most part untalented a majority of this team is.

I hate to say it, but Graham, Shell and Bennett lack killer speed. Good running backs who can win with, but I don't big plays coming from them.

  34. Look, Carrington leaving is part of the dysfunctional situation that comes with coaching changes. When coaches leave, they typically forged relationships with their players for years. So when you have multiple coaches in multiple years, you can expect a dysfunctional locker room.

As an example, Pitt coaches stayed in contact with several michigan players during the prior year and vinopal and christian came to pitt. These guys don't follow a program, they follow coaches. Carrington is nothing new.

Now, the bigger point. If you all look at the currently ranked top 10 teams in the polls and study each respective schools AD, NONE of them look like our AD, Steve Pederson. I have been saying he needs to go for years, but after researcing successful programs AD, you will start to see the major differences.

  35. Not bashing Paul Chryst....I think he deserves a chance to get this train back on the right track. However, I'm watching the ASU-Illinois game. The ASU team is explosive on both offense and defensive. I hate the way Todd Graham left PITT, but I wonder, would we be 0 for 2 if he was still here?

    Thoughts?

    1. A lot of Pitt fans don't want to hear this because they prefer a nice guy who loses, but Todd Graham is a very good coach.

      Delete
    2. I agree! I think if he stayed and got the types of players to fit is style, I think PITT fans would be sing his praises. You have to admit, PITT football was exciting while he was here.

      Delete
    3. If ASU thrives under Todd Graham, and if PITT football doesn't show some progress soon, Pitt fans will have buyer's remorse. Again, I'm not bashing Paul Chryst, I just don't understand what happened with our offense and defense between last year and now. Sure, we lost some players, and I knew we had some 'depth' issues, but I'm at a loss for why we aren't performing to the level of talent that is on our team.

As I continue to watch ASU dominate the Illini, it makes me think: "this is how PITT football was supposed to look like this year". Oh well, I'll give the current PITT coaching staff a few years...they deserve that much. Here's hoping they can "get it together".

      Delete
  36. Watching Arizona State running up and down the field is frustrating. Clearly the problems at Pitt are bigger than the coach. I look forward to Dokish's upcoming post about how things got this bad.

One thing about the Tino bashing. Just because he's awful doesn't mean ABT will be an improvement. Trey was given a decent shot last year, and he was worse than Tino. I trust Chryst as an evaluator of QB talent, and I have to believe that Tino (at this point in time) gives him the best shot to win.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Graham is being successful primarily with the players that he inherited at ASU which could mean a bunch of things, with the primary thing being pitt just doesn't have talent on that team. It also means that tino is terrible. Look, graham is having freshmen play the qb spot. Not only is one qb being productive, but both are.

That said, it is against ilinois. That also said, the defense is impacting the game, creating turnovers!! I really feel he didn't like the administration and any commitment to winning.

    1. ASU wasn't entering this season with a lot of talent either. USA Today ranked them the 6th worst team entering the season.

Look at what Graham and Rodriguez has done already this year with a lot of last season's Pitt staff. Those guys can coach. Chryst hasn't proven that he can be a head coach yet.

      Delete
    2. I think ASU 2012 and Pitt 2011 are very comparable situations. Similar talent, same new coach. Vastly different results.

The Illinois argument is extremely weak. Last year, Pitt opened with Buffalo and Maine, and struggled in both games.

      Delete
    3. Pitt won those two games. They didn't lose to YSU and were not blow out in games. They could have won almost every game last year. I didn't like his style of football but they did have results.

  38. In the business circles it's understood that you are only as good as the talent that surrounds you. PC coaching staff except for one or two guys lacks talent. In three or four years we will be looking for a new coach and will once again be starting all over.

  42. The defense is not slow. They play slow because they are poorly coached. They are very tentative and lack any aggressiveness. The LBs are coached by a guy with no college coaching experience; so are the DBs. The DL coach was fired by UCLA where his defensive line was repeatedly called soft. Last night, those same players with a new coach held Nebraska to two FGs in the 2d half and got the safety which won the game. After the game, the DL who sacked the QB for that safety was interviewed on TV and was brutal in his assessment of the old DL coach and DC vs the new ones. Said they didn't make adjustments during the game last year, were too passive and didn't really know what they were doing.

That is why they look so slow. They are unsure and confused and passive. Therefore they are late reacting to plays.

To suggest this team is not as talented as Cincy is absurd. The difference is coaching. Period.

so much for allllll those Chryst and crew supporters saying they will "coach em up"... lol

  43. At the college level, even D-1, you can get by with pure talent.

Coaching makes a difference mostely when it comes to making average players good.

Agree that there's been lacking in coaching in terms of technique and schemes (for example, Chryst and Huxtable probably should have elected to go 3-4 instead of 4-3).

But to argue the D-Line and Linebackers are talented but simply lacking coaching seems a bit illogical.

Take Clemmings. First game out there and he proved to be more visible than any of the other defensive players in either game.

I think the argument that Pitt's defense lacks talent is pretty strong given the evidence.

However, on the bright side, right now the best NFL talent on the field looks to be Lafayette Pitts. The kid is big time probably at safety at the next level or once some of the current safeties are gone.

    2. Really Chris? You're going after Hueber, a coach with over 40 years experience, a suspect line, and a terrible qb after two games?? Seems to me the line was creating some running lanes and the protection hasn't been bad. Tino has no pocket presence. Also, what about the tagline "Just because he (Chryst) did it successfully at Wisconsin doesn't necessarily mean he will at Pitt...Shouldn't the same hold true for Bostad?

    3. Bostad has done wonders in Tampa Bay, Gordo did you watch the game, Tampa was horrible last year, I really think he was the brains of the Wisconsin offense, it was a huge loss for him to leave Pitt and go to Tampa Bay.

    4. Old Track Coach, I never said Bostad wasn't a loss. He was. I was expounding on some other points. As for your point, Doug Martin, a third year for Josh Freeman, a healthy and rededicated Mike Williams, and Vincent Jackson helped the Bucs yesterday and this year, a lot. Not sure you can put one games success on Bostad. Cmon man.

    5. gordo, so what's your point?

    6. Gordo, Bostad was a huge loss for two reason. One is he's maybe the best OL coach in the country. And two, because he's the best OL coach in the country he could have really brought in some great OL with his rep. I'm not saying Huebner isn't a good, experienced coach because he is. But there are a lot of those guys and he's nothing special. Good, but not special. Bostad was. He was a program changer.

    7. I hear ya man, losing Bostad was a huge bummer in recruiting and he is a great coach. I think he is awesome for Tampa. They might jump and he will definitely help. I just didn't appreciate the crabbiness of your comment. I don't see any reason to drag a coach under the bus when actually the only positive albeit mild surprise in the season has been the offense line play imo. Plus you keep spelling the guys name wrong and he was an o-line coach in the nfl as well.

  48. I'm 100% convinced that a lot of our problems will go away as soon as Tino Sabe gets benched. Addition by subtraction.

On the other hand, most if not all of our problems will remain if Tino the Magnificent stays on the field.

And even if I'm delusional and/or oversimplifying, let's bench him anyway and get somebody ready for 2013.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree QB is a problem but is the Oline contributes to the problem, they can't pass block. I believe Tino will be benched during the VT game because VT is going to steamroll the oline and kill Sunseri but do you expose Voytik to a beating or do you ease him into game 4?

Now the other problem is the defense or lack of one, not sure what you can do, the players look slow, all of them.

      Delete
  49. There is no positive solution to a possible quarterback controversy this year. If Voytik does supplant Tino, then great. Tino will go down as a sad indictment to the program. That said, he will still have to compete with Tom Savage next year, and even if they both play, then Voytik is now a junior going into 2014. That seems to indicate that Voytik will do his 4 years with the program and be gone. Hopefully, if Chad is the answer, then he will be ready to be a legit D1 qb in 14.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's okay if Voytik doesn't redshirt and will be gone in four years. It's not like he's a once in a lifetime QB. He will probably be good but if Pitt wants to be a real program they will continue to have good QBs after Voytik leaves. Hell, Chapman and Kincade may prove to be better for all we know. What I'm saying is that IF Voytik is ready to play, then he has to play, even if it's not as a starter. I'd rather he come into next year with some experience then no experience. I'm not talking about 5 throws on the season, of course. I want him to be out there for over 100 snaps this year if he's capable.

      Delete
    2. I agree.. what are you saving him for...
Give him some playing time so next year you can't say he is inexperience...
Savage won't have seen real game experience for 3 years by 2013 season.

Give Voytek a few series per game...

      Delete
    3. Why do people want to save a QB for 4 years??
I think if you get 2 years out of a QB... that is great... and no need to redshirt.
      You have Chapman coming in..
Then Kincaide (possibly Chryst nephew) in 2 years.
So long as you have a quality QB coming in every year... should be fine.

      Delete
    4. Completely agree. I think there should be signs @ home games that say "Voytik for 100 snaps" Hey, at least a better alternative to paper bags on heads. Two games is enough for where this makes a lot of sense. Maybe you catch fire in a bottle you never know, but def the best move for the program. Quarterback play is key to any game of football...whether you're playing in: some small no name school no name state high school championship game; AFC Championship game, retirement home pick-up game...man I hope we can regain some competency at the position as we transition into the ACC.

  51. Bostad reminded me of Joe Moore from my alma mater! Now that man could get every ounce of talent out of a kid!

Gotta pay for the best coaches. It always comes back to the chicken or the egg. Do you pay first and get the results or do you wait, get the results and pay. I tend to get out in front of things. Pay the great ones up front and roll. At least if you fail, you do so knowing you gave it your best effort.

Steve Pederson can never say that. He is just cheap. As far as qb's are concerned, PC will make a move to Voytik as we cannot know for certain that Savage will be the man next year. That is a dangerous game to play by not getting Voytik meaningful snaps, now.
