Pittsburgh 47 Temple 17

Now this is what I call an impressive win, and I think it was the most impressive win of the season.  Virginia Tech was a bit of an anomaly because the Hokies were mailing it in, but Temple was trying hard and still had no answers for Pitt.  I can't really think of one major bad thing that Pitt did.  The good?

Tino Sunseri once again was proficient completing 20 of 28 passes for 321 yards and 3 TDs.  He also had no interceptions yet again and was sacked just once.

Devin Street had 6 catches for 140 yards, and a TD, while Mike Shanahan had 6 catches for 67 yards.  At tight end, J.P. Holtz is playing more than Hubie Graham now and while they only threw his way once, it was an 18-yard touchdown.  He was also excellent blocking, as was the entire line who simply manhandled the Temple defense.

Pitt out gained Temple 528-324.

Ray Graham and Rushel Shell were both excellent.  Graham showed more of his old self and came with 19 carriers for 109 yards and 2 touchdowns.  He also caught 4 passes for 71 yards, and another touchdown.  Shell plowed his way to 79 yards on 12 carries.  He also had a touchdown.

On defense, the entire unit was flying all over the field.  Temple has one of the worst pass offenses in the country and Pitt had a field day with the Owls being so one dimensional.  Temple did run for 129 yards, but that's down from Temple's usual 167.2 yard average.

K'Waun Williams, Lafayette Pitts, and Jason Hendricks were all good in the secondary and the fact that are three are back next year is great news for the program.

Aaron Donald was once again good, especially with the pass rush.

The best news I saved for last and that is the play of Dan Mason.  It's a miracle that the guy can even play, but the truth is, in the last two games, he's proven to be the best player on the defense.  He's everywhere and he's quickly reaching legendary status.  I just can't say enough about Mason or his story.

Next up is Notre Dame.  Needless to say this will be a much tougher test than Temple.  If Pitt plays this well at South Bend, they could steal the game.  But even if they play this well and lose it will show that Chryst is heading the right way.

  1. Chris you nailed it.

The BEST BALANCED WIN in years.

Mason a HUGE DIFFERENCE on Defense. Thomas making plays all over the field. Ray Graham, my favoriate all-time Pitt Player... not the first time I've said it.

The first-half screen play to Graham, probably the best timed, best executed play I can remember in SOOOOOOOO LONG.

Bottom line, the biggest difference today... the O-Line played GREAT!

The one negative... Hubie Graham looks like he could be lost for the season. No doubt, this is a better team with him on the field.

Congratulations Coach Chryst and Co. Congratulations players.

The Bandwagon is about to leave the station. ALL ABOARD!!

  2. Very nice win for Chryst and Co. I've been a big critic of Tino's, but he continues to have a nice season. As long as he has a strong running game behind him, he's fine. It's when he's counted on to make big plays in crucial situations that he falls far short.

Hopefully, this will be a good confidence builder for ND.

    1. Dan, any QB with a running game looks great. Tino is having excellent year as you said. I have been very impressed on the way he has handle criticism this year and past especially in this blog. It is time to praise boys

    2. Buc, Tino is having the kind of year I hoped he'd have under Chryst's system and tutelage. Both deserve a good bit of credit.

My comment about Tino was to say that he's a complementary kind of QB. Yes, while all QBs benefit from a good running game, Tino's not the kind of QB who if the running game falters, can put the game on his shoulders. Also, he does still have a tendency to make mistakes at critical times (Syracuse).

He's a decent college QB, who's having a very good year in a system geared to him. I'm glad for him, because he's endured quite a bit of criticism. I've come to accept him for who he is; an adequate to good QB who, while limited, can be very effective with a good running game.

  3. It feels really good to beat a team that tried to win. I think a few more wins will instill a measure of confidence in both the coaches and the players. Once that happens, I think we will see Chryst begin to leverage the strengths of the players. We then begin playing better, and winning more games - more consistently.

  4. I was very surprised Pitt played so well against Temple. Notre Dame is going to be an entirely different matter. I am as big as Pitt supporter as anyone but I really think we have no chance against them. I think everyone is a bit too high right now. Remember this is the team that lost to Syracuse.

Everyone, well not exactly everyone... has been a bit too damn pessimistic.

  5. Norte Dame has a great defense and will probably win but as far as their offense goes they've been rotating QBs all year.

No doubt we are huge underdogs against them but if we play like this next week we have a fighting chance.

  6. Pitt has shown good moments and very bad moments this year. As I've said, this is to be expected from a first time head coach. (No need to rebate Pitt's lack of commitment to the football program; at least they still care about academics). Hopefully, any smart recruit will see that while Pitt is struggling often this year, the team hasn't given up and is still playing at 110%. That's a pretty good indication that next year likely won't be as bad as this year. Present success is not a guarantee of future success; and present troubles are no guarantee of future troubles. I hope that PC's demeanor with recruits is perseverance, professionalism, and a commitment to each player's own development. It may not be flashy, but who knows what signing day will bring.

  7. Have only watched a small amount of Notre Dame ths year.

The linebacker is really good. The rest of team seems to be a typical Notre Dame team... talented but a bit dysfunctional.

I will be watching them tonight though to see if there's any reason Pitt has no chance of beating this team.

After the way the team played today, doubt that's the case.

  8. Great win over a one dimensional mediocrity of a team. But a win is a win, and now they're closer to the all important 6 win plateau. Tino needs only applause from here on in; another solid performance. Dan Mason is the most inspirational player for the Panthers in two generations. Onto South Bend. Go Blue and Gold. Sweet Caroline was very sweet today!!

  10. Any news on injuries after the game. The OL and DL will determine the outcome of next weeks game. The DL will need to be disciplined in their respective lanes. This is the type of game where Aaron Donald and TJClemmings can get national exposure if they play well. I am thinking the line will be about 19, but it is early.

Nice game today by the panthers. Well done! There were a few points in the game where typically the ball bounces the other way or our guys don't make the play. Of concern were several third and double digits that Temple picked up. All in all, a sound game across the board as Chris suggests. Enjoy the Win and let's get back to the drawing board tomorrow.

  11. I am a big fan of this blog because I get alot of good info on everything PITT. I read it daily and love the commentary. Something that I have noticed is that there are contibutors to the blog who only seem to write something when they want to complain or feel the need to be critical of the coach, the team, the adnministration, etc. How about hearing something positive from yunz when PITT deserves some love...like the performance/ win vs Temple?

    1. I thought this was by far the best performance by us this year.

Susnseri has been outstanding all year not unlike Bill Stull's final season with Pitt.

I do not see how we can win next week but, I never gave us a chance in hell either and then....13-9.

Maybe Tino can have a Palko moment after the game :):):)

I have a "friend" of mine who is a big ND fan - always inflating their worth every year (although this year, he may be right)....OMG, if we would win that game, it WOULD go down in Pitt history right alongside 13-9.

Foster, Johnson and Boyd would be knocking on Pitt's door come Monday morning.

What a supershot in the program a win at South Bend would be if we can pull it off.

ND's going to have to turn the ball over to us multiple times and we're going to have to play flawless.

      13-9 - anybody with Zatiti?

    2. If Pitt plays like they did against Temple/VT they absolutely have a chance to pull off the upset, ZM.

  12. To those PESSIMISTS who were certain Pitt would lose to Temple and are so sure the future of Pitt football is doomed and have been calling for Chryst to be fired, if not today than some other day.

Some words of wisdom from the Coach himself.

Keep growing and learn from your mistakes.

  13. Pitt played well yesterday... I watched the 1st half... then put my daughter through a track workout. This morning, 6mile run... then hope to go check out the Ocean this afternoon at Point Pleasant Beach (15min away)... yes, I know, the hurricane is coming and direct hit to NJ.

Back to recruiting... Foster got booted from the game against BF so he sits 1st playoff game... funny, he has lots of friends in BF.
But, sounds like he is having a great visit at Alabama..
this is how you do it in recruiting... cookie cake!! Sherril used pecan pie..

    1. According to him, he got in the fight because a Beaver Falls player called him the n-word. If that's true then I don't blame him. The truth is, I've talked to the kid, and I know many people who know him, and he's a good kid.

He also talked on the phone with Bobby Engram since he's been in Alabama and he calls him the coolest guy ever. I think more than ever that he'll end up at Pitt. He also said he would love to play with Boyd so that may be something to keep an eye on.

First - what the heck does this have to do with the topic and second, why the hell would you think anyone would care?

"this is how you do it in recruiting... "

You do realize that Foster couldn't wait to get back home (funny you didn't put that twitter comment up) and that he has a virtual man crush on Bobby E, right?

Joe D - another failed attempt to act like he knows what he's talking about.

  14. Great to see Pitt overpower an inferior opponent. But I think to call this an impressive win, or more impressive than beating Virginia Tech is a stretch. Tech is having problems this year but did not mail it in. They are far more talented than Temple. Had Pitt beaten last years Temple team in this manner that would have been an impressive for this Pitt team because Temple was a high average team. But this Temple team stinks. Let's be honest about that. I'm not disparaging Pitt's performance at all and they deserve all the compliments coming their way. Pitt's talent deficits remain obvious and while I hope for a good showing against ND I don't think we are capable of it. I think ND's defense could dominate with 8 players. I believe in Chryst and hope folks responding next week keep in mind what Pitt is up against compared to this week. I hope for 13-9 but am afraid it will be a frustrating day next Saturday for all.

  15. Wow happy days are here again, they beat a team they should have beat, it's a step in the right direction.

Inconsistency defines this team if they can go 3-1 or 2-2 over the last 4 games and be competitive then there is a glimmer of hope. Remember this team lost to a weak YSU team and a weak SU team, that's whats troubling their inconsistency because Pitt should have beat both like they beat Temple yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Finally no negativity, I told you the team was coming together! The only true losses were the YSU and Cincy debacles, Syracuse we beat except where it matters on the scoreboard and Louisville could've gone the other way. My point is that this is a good team with talent that will continue to get better there were some early growth pains with a new coaching staff, system, and first time HC. I called for an ND upset last week but after watching the Oky game not so sure, but I'll stick with it. It was a great day, a Pitt win and Pedo St loss. Negative incognito Pedo St poster Tossing Thabets no where to be seen.

  17. I love Pitt, but I foresee gloom and doom for the ND game. I don't see Tino showing much character, and I really don't see Pitt competing beyond the first quarter.

Yes, I know, that is a heap of pessimism. I love Pitt, but reality dictates the Panthers should lay an egg. Believe me, I want to pop the champagne if Pitt is still in the game with 10 minutes left. I just don't see it.

  18. I wonder if Alabama even cares that Foster will not be playing next week since he got tossed out of the game. He made his official visit to them this weekend! He very well could have played his final game of High School football this past Friday evening and was ejected in the process, NICE!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I say there is no way Pitt lands Foster. I think with Foster comes Dorian Johnson. When Foster follows the spotlight to Alabama, D. Johnson will go elsewhere. It's really frustrating to see these guys leave but I don't blame them. While Alabama is playing LSU in the primetime nationally televised 8 pm game, Pitt is playing some scrub MAC school at 11 am which you have to watch on your computer or video game system.

    1. But could Pitt beat the scrub MAC school?

    2. I find it amusing that everyone assuming going to Alabama would be so amazing. It's in Tuscaloosa. I'm sure the gameday atmosphere would be amazing for three hours every Saturday for a couple months, but you still have to live there everyday. If they want to play in the NFL, they have no better chance of getting drafted at Alabama then they do at Pitt. If they want to be around the best NFL franchise on the planet, they can do that at Pitt. I know it sounds CRAZY, but they might not want to be around a bunch of racist rednecks and led by a scumbag like Nick Saban. They might actually want to have their family show up for a game.

  20. You are such a tool. I hope you're just a Pitt fan and not an alumni because you would set the university back a couple of decades. Complete swing and miss on the Penn State crap - I was a Michigan fan prior to going to Pitt. I really don't get your obsession with them on Pitt messaging board. You can't post without mentioning them. Once again, show me my negative posts? I've said on several occasions that I like Chryst's offense and that I've had no issues with his play calling. My ONLY criticism has been the defense - I don't like the style of play nor do I think they are very good. I've said I'm not worried about his recruiting on offense because he's proven he can recruit for his system regardless of "stars". I've also said that same philosophy won't work on defense, especially in the ACC. This is the second time I've had to state this. No personal attacks on any coaches or players. Just joining the general discussion. It was a good win against a bad team - not much to comment on until your personal attack.

If you were a true Pitt fan, which you obviously aren't, you would understand the true hatred we have for pedo st. However, I won't get into that now but I will say that I never attacked you, I only exposed you. You on the other hand have made this personal - A tool, okay let's have a beer before the next game.

  21. You have to let go the penn state envy comment go - it was in response to a comment you made to me ... and you still can't post without mentioning them. We've played PSU twice since I went to school ... starting in 93'. What rivalry? Penn St certainly doesn't consider us one. WVU is my true rival and that's true for most alums post-1990. PSU SHOULD be a rival and I wish it was but it's not ... they are just a relic from a bygone era and have been irrelevant to Pitt for a long time.

My other issue, is you've accused me of being negative without reading my posts. I stated this before and you acknowledged that I wasn't being negative only to come back to this crap. I'm a frustrated alumni but not negative. I'm not going to get too high over a win against Temple nor am I going to get too low if we lose next week to ND.

The next game I'm going to is Pitt - G-Town. I'll gladly buy you a drink to discuss our differences. Not only will you see that I'm not a PSU fan but that I'm a true Pitt fan that is excited about Pitt traveling into ACC country where there are 7 schools within 4 hours driving distance of me.

  22. I have not been a fan of PC's so far but that game was pretty impressive. I'm still not sold on him after one good game. As long as they play solid against ND and can win the last 3 it will be promising.

Fosters tweets are also promising after his Bama visit.

Mason's injurt is a real shame. He looked slow the first few games in limited action but he really really looked good against temple.

    2. I agree, Temple is pretty bad, actually Pitt has played a pretty weak schedule, realistically they should be 6-2 with losses to UofL and UC.

YSU is horrible and SU isn't far behind, those are two terrible losses that could cost them a decent post season bowl, let's see if Pitt is competitive against ND.

      Delete
    3. There's no doubt that Pitt has for the most part not played well this season. But will they improve enough in these last four games to salvage the season? That's the question. Todd Graham's team last year actually did improve in the second half of the season. If Pitt does the same this year then they can go to a bowl game which obviously helps Pitt's cause in the long run.

  24. Chris 2 questions:

1 - Who do you think transfers out at seasons end?

2 - If everything is supposedly stacked towards Pitt, what with Ingram being a cool dude and all, why hasn't he committed?
