Dorian Johnson to Pitt

One down, two to go.  Belle Vernon offensive lineman Dorian Johnson has committed to the Panthers after spending the weekend visiting, along with fellow elite prospects Robert Foster and Tyler Boyd.  The 6'6" 275 pound Johnson originally committed to Penn State, but changed his mind after the Nittany Lions went on probation for four years.  Considered one of the best offensive line prospects in the country, Johnson also had offers from the likes of Ohio State, Alabama, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Had Dorian as a gimme prior to his PSU committ.
    This is great news.

  2. Did he commit because of Chryst or rather in spite of him?

  3. Great scoop, Chris. Thanks for the great news!

    Two questions:

    1. Do you get the sense these 3 guys are a package deal? Guess we'll know soon enough...

    2. Which coach was his primary recruiter?

    Thanks!

  4. He was the guy we really needed. Nice pick up Chryst.

  5. I said two questions but I guess I meant three:

    3. Let's say Pitt also gets commits from both Foster and Boyd. Are there any other fence-sitters that would come with these guys?

I ask because there are still a few guys rated as 4-star prosects by Scout.com that list "medium" interest in Pitt. Maybe they'd have more interest if they see some of the bigger recruits picking Pitt too?

Does it even work that way? (I think it might, but you're the expert...).

    1. It does work that way, and there are some talented kids who may be get even more excited if Foster and Boyd commit, but I wouldn't expect anybody at the same level as these three.

  7. Are we good at the line now as far as this class goes? I think we need more beef on both lines.I guess it depends if T. Jarrett goes on the OL or DL. Who's next and whom do we want besides Foster and Boyd? In the meantime thank god.

    1. love it. He's a brute, a nice road grinder. You got DJ and Aaron Reese as your 2 bookend tackles. Then Carson Baker and Officer as guards and centers. Would be great additions to go along with last years haul in Biz and gabe roberts. Would be nice to get a DL to Moody, Gibbs, or a Juco kid they are looking at. Then hopefully a secondary guy or linebacker to complete it. Of course Foster or Boyd or both come to.

  10. Chris, what would you say his chances are for redshirting, and if he doesn't, might he be an immediate starter? What will be a rough draft of our offensive line for next year?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Normally he would be an ideal redshirt candidate because he's a little smaller even then the 285 he's listed at. And as we know, Chryst likes giants. Johnson is so lean that he can easily put on 50 pounds or more while at Pitt.

But as we know, Pitt needs lineman, so if he shows he's capable I can see him in there. You just always worry that he goes in before he's really ready and then gets his development stunted.

      Delete
    2. Oh, as for a rough draft, it's anybody's guess. May the best five win and may those five be at least decent.

      Delete
    3. I think he would definitely redshirt, unless he can beat out BIZ and Hollinz (who I think will have a strong senior year if no off the field problems).. which isn't likely.

  11. Zatiti Moody was completely wrong - he thought none of those 3 would EVER commit to Pitt. What a dumba$$ he is.

    Foster and Boyd...COME ON DOWN!!!

  12. This is great news. Let's hope he signs on the dotted line on LOI day. Hopefully we'll get both Foster and Boyd.

  13. Looks like Johnson cancelled his visit to OSU this weekend. (per pantherlair) I'll still be surprised if Boyd ends up at Pitt, but I always thought Foster was a lock.

  14. I checked the Pitt roster for next year's O line. Here are ten names; Ricketts, Doakes, Rowell, Bisnowaty, Hollins, Roberts, Rotheram, Schlieper, King, and Shane Johnson. Add in Dorian Johnson, Aaron Reese, and Carson Baker as true freshman.

Of course this projects out to nothing, but based on progression, there is five starters and five backups. It might be a reach for the true freshmen to play, but this line just might be shaping up in the next two to three years.

Looking forward to the ACC move. Not looking forward to next year's record.

    1. How can you not like the potential of next year's team? our OL isn't losing much, Doakes has looked good, and we get Hollins and Ricketts back. Savage/Voytik/Chapman battling it out at QB. Losing Shanahan and Cam might hurt but we have some decent WRs on the team (plus Foster and Boyd potential). Shell/Bennett at RB. Our only big loss on D is Holley.

I think we can turn some heads in our first year in the ACC

      Delete
    2. Savage/Voytik/Chapman. Enough said. Huge upgrade at QB.

The key is to improve on the offensive line. If Hollins is back it woudl help. Definitely need a replacement at center and it would be nice to get a juco like Marquis Wallace or Abens Cajuste to provide a bit of depth.

Getting a playmaker or two at WR would help tremendously - Foster/Boyd.

All these things fall into place, which they certainly could...man, provided we get a bit of improvement from PC, we could be tough.

  18. Chris,
Any thoughts on the MD move. I know its about household in your market but we watch the SEC because the teams are good. MD and Rutgers dont move the meter in there areas. I don't get this move. The ACC should jump on Louisville. UConn won't be the same w/o Calhoun and there football program doesn't have the following that Louisville does.

    Here is an attendance comparison.

    UConn
    •2011: 36,668
    •2010: 38,248
    •2009: 38,229

    Louisville
    •2011: 48,538

    •2009: 32,450

    Pittsburgh
    •2011: 46,003
    •2010: 52,165
    •2009: 53,446

    Maryland
    •2011 42,355
    •2010 39,168
    •2009 44,452

    Rutgers

    1. Agree with KFR on ACC replacement strategy. The choice has to be Louisville. It strikes at the underbelly of the Big Ten. Unfortunately the television market is not there. UConn will always be available if needed in the future.

      Delete
    2. Unless the ACC raids an AQ conf (since the Big East isn't one anymore), the move that makes most sense is U of Houston.

UConn brings nothing to the ACC for the same reason that Pitt brings nothing to the Big-10: the network can already charge for all those homes via another member school.

Houston is a HUGE city, great acaademics, decent enough in the Big Two sports, and not really that far from the ACC's existing footprint.

  19. Our class immediately changed from average to great with this commit.. And look who is still on the board - Foster, Boyd, Delano Hill, Officer, Jones-Smith, and Moody. Get a handful of these guys, and maybe a RB with potential (If only we still had Clement). Either way, this class is turning out to look fantastic.

    1. One guy doesn't elevate it from average (or more likely, below avg, IMO) to great.

Land both Foster and Boyd (and, fingers crossed, that Issah kid / big LB from Hbg), then it's safe to call it great.

    1. Good for Joe. Patience in this program is a long range virtue. Maybe if Pitt makes small progress in the next 2 to 3 years, then PC can stay long term. A quick turnaround is unrealistic. If 30 years of mediocrity can be at least tolerated, then a new building program in which a brick by brick process will produce success; then by all means lets go for it.

      Delete
    2. C'mon man....
      Lets not go that far....
To remind you... Johnson committed to PSU... then the PSU sanctions..
So, you should be thanking the NCAA for its sanctions on PSU for landing Johnson.

Johnson was a gimme with Rudolph being a graduate of Belle Vernon and still has contacts in town!!!

      Delete
    3. There is no gimme when rich alumni boosters can offer money, girls, future jobs, and other incentives to recruits; coaches who can lie, cheat, manipulate, and steal kids in what is known as college recruiting. Plus, its Urban Meyer and OSU Urban with 2 rings, a host of pro's, OSU with its tradition and when you don't factor in the sanctions they are in the national championship this year.

      Delete
    4. You make absolutely no sense Joe D! "Johnson was a gimme with Rudolph..." yet he committed to PSU first? Why did he commit to PSU if he was a gimme?

      Delete
    5. Anonymous...
Johnson was or should have been considered a gimme...
      why PSU first...
because Rudolph is not a good recruiter like many thought..
with all the fanfare of developing Olinemen and TE of Chryst and crew... and Rudolph grew up in Belle Vernon.. yes... that is a gimme...
which is why you see me beat the drum that Chryst and crew don't get it when it comes to recruiting... "Just Offer" doesn't cut it with top recruits..

      Delete
    6. You also said there was no chance they got Johnson after the loss to UConn. Guess you were wrong...again!

      Delete
    7. Yep....
Prior to UConn loss... I had them at 50-50 to land 2 of the 3... I thought Johnson would be 1 of them.
After losing to UConn... all bets were off..

But... Pitt should have had the Johnson committ wrapped up before HS season started.... should have had the Johnson committ instead of him going to PSU.
Like I said... be greatful for NCAA.

Seems Chryst and crew.... the lightbulb went off.... you just can't... "Just Offer"... you need to be persistent, red carpet, pecan pie, etc..

    1. I can't see Foster going to Bama, just as I couldn't see Shell going there either. Most of the local kids prefer to stay within range of home when it comes to picking a school, so once it's down to Bama and Pitt, strange as this sounds, more times than not Pitt wins out.

Boyd, on the other hand, could still probably go to WVU. He has a much better chance of being developed into a pro prospect at Pitt, and hopefully he'll come to realize that.

  31. Sal Sunseri will become available at end of TN season...
    All stories point that way..
Sal signed a 3yr deal... he will be owed 1.84 million by TN over next 2 years that will be offset by whatever he gets in another position...
In other words, Pitt can get him as DLine coach... pay him say $200K and Sal will get some 700K from TN for the next 2 years.

Sal would be a great recruiter for Pitt... even if Pitt only keeps him for 2 years..

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Having Sal as Pitt's head coach with "Wanny's Revenge" at QB would have been a recipe for disaster of Biblical proportions.

That's where U. of Colorado began its short death spiral from Big XII champs to dregs: hiring Dan Hawkins as head coach, with his son Cody at QB as a freshman in DH's first year (FWIW, Cody was a Tino clone, they even look alike: too short, weak-arm, scatter arm, etc...). CU couldn't recruit even a mediocre QB for four years because the guys knew they had zero shot to play until Cody graduated. Now, four years later, the cupboard is bare and the Buffs are a dumpster fire.

As an aside, you think Pitt fans & consipracy theorists cry nepotism, asking how inept Tino got his role? That's nothing compare to the deafening cries out here (altho out here, they weren't just hollow claims, it was fact...)

I have no problem hiring Sal for whatever as long as Tino is gone. And I mean GONE gone, not even hanging around as a grad assistant.

I know lots of talk of Clairton these days... in PG, etc. Clairton and Quips were suppose to play in the opener this year... but wpial changed it... presumably because wpial wanted to keep Clairton's streak alive.

However, this Quip team may rival the Sean Gilbert team of late 80's. Quips are loaded and could easily win wpial AAA this year and next year. God there lines are big for a AA team (A team playing up). Would love to see them play NA this year..

41 Ft's to 16 for Moorehead St. (about 6 of those for MS were late to try to make it look good)

And even if there was, one of the teams that would benefit sure as heck wouldn't be Michigan, since no one associates that name with Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, etc....
And it certainly wouldn't come at the expense of teams like Pitt and Georgetown.

All I remember is that Bielien's teams never fouled a lot when he was at WVU. It would actually caused them problems when they trailed because it would take extra time to get to the bonus. I'm willing to bet a lot of that happened the other night. That and the fact Michigan is pretty good.

Dorian is in the fold and it is time for Robert Foster and Tyler Boyd to do the same as quickly as possible as PC and Pitt football continue their rise back to prominence. I played college ball at Carnegie-Mellon and frequently hung out with all the 80s greats and the momentum is there if these 2 will just make the leap.
It is clear that PC knows how to run an offense by how productive Pitt is against everybody. ND and Rutgers are no slouchs on D. It will be exciting and it needs to be led by our home grown talent first. What do you say boys?
When you agree, a big time RB and more defenders will follow as who doesn't want to be part of Whisky east?
Go Pitt! There is a toughness that only comes from WPA, just ask Rutgers where they froze all Sat. afternoon.

  51. Agree Louisville makes sense and ACC is strong in multiple sports now across the board which is great. I can't wait to go to the ACC Tournament in NYC or Brooklyn at some point soon!

on another note, the Rutgers AD interview at halftime of the Pitt Game where he talks about how they were courted over a long period of time, how they add alot of value to the big ten...all a bunch of hors.. I can't wait for Ohio State to wake up and say they are getting tired of carrying all these s... programs, sharing money, and want their own TV deal...

    ReplyDelete

    1. I saw that interview and completely agree. The AD sayging TV markets had nothing to do with Rutgers (seriously) being invited to the Big 10, that their standing as an AAU school is why they were invited. Does he really think the viewing public is that stupid?

OSU, Michigan and Wisconsin could probably broker their own TV deals much like Texas and make the Big 10 money look like chump change. Taking in dregs such as Maryland and Rutgers isn't going to do anything for those programs except pay them more to be doormats.

  52. I somewhat feel sorry for UConn but without the Big East, their athletic programs would be a big zero ... and they would never have won their titles in BB. Much credit to them for building up their programs and wouldn't be surprised if they do eventually join a better league, but still they had no history of anything or even a football program before the BE.

    1. I never thought of that. I felt bad for Cincy, USF, and Uconn. But at least Cincy has a good shot at a Big XII invite and USF has got a chance to be invited somewhere else. Uconn is on an island out there and promptly screwed. I do not feel for the basketball schools they have been limiting the football teams for years.

  54. Talked to a well-connected Central Valley "person" (don't want to say much more than that) and he thinks Foster to Pitt is pretty much a done deal and that he'll be announcing in December. Mom is the one that is really making this happen which kind of made me a little sad because IMO a kid should go to the school he really wants to go to, not to the one his parents want him to go to. It will be nice to see him play at Pitt and I think he does like Pitt, but if his mom was not involved, I think Bama would have likely been the choice - remember the "ready to commit" tweet shortly after his visit to Bama.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I've always said that people read way too much into the timing of Foster's announcement. All he meant was that now that he saw Alabama he was going to think about his decision. It was misread by people like Mike Farrell (not surprisingly) that since he just visited Alabama and then was ready was to decide that it must be Alabama. That was never the case. But unfortunately that misunderstanding kept snowballing until it became "fact".

    2. Chris,
Foster tweeted that... yes, right after his visit to Alabama.

    1. I wouldn't call it a sure thing. Bowl games manipulate things for themselves but you would think an NYC bowl would love that matchup. Of course it wouldn't be good if Pitt got crushed in that game. On the other hand it would help Pitt if they did the crushing.

  56. Chris face the facts he was about to commit there. Pitt and his mom convinced him to take his visit here and it really paid off. Now pitt is in the lead from all the people i hear from in CV. 1. I don't think that's the facts at all. He never implied that he was going to commit to Alabama. In fact he was talking up Pitt the entire time he was at Alabama.

    2. Talking to CV coaches, those are the facts Chris. Foster got to eat breakfast at Saban's house, went out on his boat, was the only recruit to visit that week. It wasn't until his mom came back into the picture suddenly after the Bama visit that he even had an official visit set up with Pitt. They had to do it last minute (on a non-game week attending a hoop game against Oakland??). Right now it sounds like Mom is controlling things and that is why Pitt will be the choice.

    3. You got bad info. There were dozens of prospects visiting Alabama with Foster. It's already been well reported. I also know for a fact that Foster told Pitt long ago that the Panthers will get the last visit.

WVU has 5 rb's in its class now, Kentucky is going through a coaching change (ain't it nice it isn't us). Nebraska has a big time RB in its class now but I think they would be our biggest competitors for his services, Kemp hits the hole straight like a power drill and is very very quick.

    3. Very different runners. Clement is more shifty, has more shake, and has fantastic vision. JoJo is explosive and has some directional change, but is much more power oriented. Good luck arm tackling him. JoJo would be a nice compliment with Shell as he looks almost impatient running the ball. I love this kid, it would be great to get him.

Too bad he's only 5'10" because he almost looks like a better linebacker.

  62. On Foster :

Alabama secured the 6th , 12th, and 19th ranked WR's last year. All 4 stars. They have an additional 4 star and a three star in this class already.

It's a numbers game at Alabama should Foster decide to matriculate there. I think the youngster and his mother are really smart and he ends up at Pitt. Too bad he couldn't early enroll. I still think Kugler could get lost in the numbers at Michigan and may be best served looking elsewhere.

    1. Maybe a post on some of the recruits Pitt is still targeting. We all now about Foster and Boyd but what about some of the other ones.

      Delete

  67. My point is that Foster should be able to look at the Pitt depth chart at WR and reasonably expect to play early and often, as should D. Johnson, Bisno and Chapman. Kugler on the other hand is one of at least 10-13 OL that have signed with Michigan with 4 star grades (by scout) over the last two years. Kids often look at the two deep and forget about those redshirting when analyzing ability to play early. Coaches fill their heads with promises of opportunity and they can get lost.

This is exactly what agents do for their clients in the free agency markets for football and baseball. Analytics is under-rated by kids and their families. I wish all the youngsters well, but at the end of the day, they don't receive proper counseling in these respects. I am not attacking Kugler, just pointing out potential obstacles from seeing the field. I hope he makes it, but if he gets caught in a numbers crunch, it could hurt his chances of making it at the next level.

As another example, look at WV. They have already signed 3 or 4 running backs with similar traits. If you are a running back in the 3-4 star range, would you go there? Absolutely not. And before anyone responds and says elite players don't run from competition, they embrace it, my response is this. No player is elite at the high school level. That is why they go to college. To become elite.

    1. I hear ya and I agree with you. But with Kugler he knows what he is doing and his dad is steel ol coach. I'm sure he's getting what he needs. He's not a Pittsburgh born and bred guy like foster. But on all of your other accounts I can't agree with you enough. WVU has now 5 rb's and I'm surprised none of them have decommited as of now.

trojen412... told you he didn't have an offer.. you said earlier he did.
In my opinion, Fields is a no-brainer. Anyone who makes the PG Fab 22 for wpial as a junior is an automatic offer... and if he is good and from quippa... it's like, what took you so long.

I watched the NA game... and NOT impressed with Zeise... but he has a Pitt offer and not PG Fab22.. go figure.

    2. I hope you're not making a judgment about Zeise based on one game or the fact the P-G didn't list him as Fab 22. I would imagine Chryst and staff (and all recruiters) would look at the overall performance, and not on one game or whether some paper listed him as one of the 22 best players in an area.

against Woodland Hills - a team that beat Gateway to advance to the AAAA final

he did drop 2 passes on short outs when he grabbed the ball and then spun around too quickly

but Zeise could end up on defense at the next level

Zeise is a junior; started as a sophomore on AAAA team that is currently 43-2 last 3 seasons; better indicator of a future Div1 player than the PG Fab 22 selection

As for Zeise, he has good length, speed, and athleticism, and he's a very good local prospect at defensive back. He's also a kid that is easily worthy of a Pitt scholarship.
