Pittsburgh 78 Lehigh 53

Another game, another impressive Pitt win.  The Panthers improve to 3-0 and unlike what some expected, this wasn't close.

1.  Tray Woodall was the leading scorer, the third different leading scorer for the team in the first three games, and all three leaders had over 20 points.  Woodall, who in my opinion has been the most consistent Panther this season, had 23 points, including 4-7 from three, while also grabbing 4 rebounds and dishing out 8 assists.

2.  Talib Zanna once again had an excellent game, and this time was deadly from 12 feet out.  He ended up with 20 points, thanks to 8-9 from the field and 4-5 from the line.  He also added 6 rebounds, one block, and one steal.

3.  Steven Adams struggled for the first time this season and he seemed to be lost and flailing for most of the first half.  He got under control more in the second half and contributed 6 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks, and a steal.

4.  I don't think the Panthers are missing John Johnson much because Durand Johnson has come to the rescue.  The redshirt freshman may not have even seen time this season but now is averaging 8.5 ppg.  Tonight he came off the bench with 9 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal.

5.  James Robinson also had his first poor game, going 1-8 from the floor and only getting 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal.  But once again he had no turnovers and now has just one turnover in three games.

6.  On the down side, Lamar Patterson continues to have a slow start this season.  He had just 3 points and is averaging 2.7 ppg this season.

7.  The bench didn't do much in the first half but when was all said and done they contributed 24 points and 22 rebounds.  Besides Johnson, J.J. Moore came off the bench with 8 points and 5 rebounds, and Dante Taylor had 4 points and 10 rebounds.  In the last two games Taylor is averaging 9.5 rpg.

8.  Possible lottery pick C.J. McCollum had 17 points but the Pitt defense clearly held him in check.  In fact, McCollum hit two 3 pointers near the end of the game or he would have been even more of a non-factor.

9.  Pitt out rebounded Lehigh 38-20.

10.  The Panthers only had 6 turnovers.  The way they have protected the ball this season has been highly impressive, especially when compared to last season.

  1. Boy do I like Durand's game. Wondering if he passes Cam on the depth chart and soon?

    2. Seems like Wright is also getting some time at 1 for some reason. Obviously, he can't play the position on offensive, but watching him and Ziegler playing perimeter defense in the last couple of games was hilarious. Fordham could barely get the ball up the floor.

  3. Jaime needs to continue to sit Lamar Patterson down. I still like his court vision and his jumper is good enough to keep people honest, but if they are going to play Woodall, they cannot have Patterson out there with his deplorable perimeter defense unless he is the best offensive player on the floor, which he's not. I'm not sure so sure he wouldn't be an intriquing 4 as he can play the baseline and pull guys out of the lane to respect his jumper on offense and can rebound well enough on the defensive end. But he can't guard up top or on the wing.

  4. Johnson did not have a poor game. See McCollum's stats. He shot poorly, for sure, and settled for some long-range bombs without even thinking of driving the basket. But he did not need to contribute on offense tonight and it seemed clear, at least to me, that Jamie used this game as a test to see how Robinson would react to an assignment of shutting down a quick guard. Robinson had significant minutes tonight for this reason (at Zeigler's expense, it seemed). This experience will come in handy when the BE season starts.

  5. Yes, Adams is still learning but his presence in the paint alone just makes it that much more difficult for any team to beat us.

Yes, Robinson has struggled thus far with his offensive game...

But My God, this team is good now - deep as all hell and come March, we're going to be one of THE top teams in the country - zero question.

  6. I commented after the last game about J Johnson's loss being more of an issue than you thought. Well after seeing D Johnson last night I admit to being offbase and comnpletely wrong.

Duran may not shoot as well as John but he is quicker, rangier and has more all around upside potential.

  7. I was very impressed with Durand Johnson last night. Looks athletic. Might be a real nice player off the bench and if he plays like he did last night he will be more valuable than JJohnson or CWright.

I think Patterson is struggling with 2 pg's on the court. Lamar is better as a play maker and those opportunities are just not there with Robinson and Woodall in at the same time. I am sure he will adjust but it might take some time.

  8. It's hard not to get too excited about this team. You can just see the potential, and how there's such room for improvement. This team has talent, height, depth, length, athleticism....really, the only thing it might lack is consistent outside shooters.

It's funny how Pitt basketball has such an entirely different feel to it than Pitt football. I guess that's what happens when you have one of the best coaches in the game.

  9. Durand Johnson doesn't know how to play defense. I saw him not play help side defense on a number of occasions and foul someone as they made a shot because he didn't rotate over. You cite offensive stats because its easy. How about breaking down the defense? Not so easy because there are not stats to show the things it takes to be good at defense.

If they don't beat Michigan which out of conference win could they point to on selection Sunday to help their seeding?

    1. Durand was very active defensively, deflecting balls, rebounding and agressive perimeter D on most occasions. This is why coach left him out there and the numbers (minutes played) speak for themselves. In fact our second half run was with Durand as one of our 5.

  11. They look pretty good, at least a sweet 16 contender if they continue to improve and stay injury free.

You think that Robinson poor night might have been the result of chasing and shutting down Mc Collum? do you think that Zanna will continue his play come big east or just the earlier like last two years

  14. Thank God for Pitt basketball.....

translation... no longer need to watch Pitt football... or... put another way... Pitt football season will soon be over..

  15. What is interesting in this NIT preseason tourney...
Kansas State and Virginia were seeded ahead of Pitt... Pitt was #4 seed.

Pitt should have been a 3 seed...
Virginia lost to Delaware and struggled in their opener albeit a win.

    1. The top 4 seeds were based off last years results. Pitt was the only team to not make the NCAA tourney.

    2. You mean the CBI didn't count??? lol

If that were the case then Lehigh should have been seeded higher than Pitt.

      Delete
  16. That was a joke seeding Pitt at four below KSU and Virginia. Pitt v. Michigan should be the title game of the tourney.

  17. I'm going to be kind to Lamar Patterson. He seems to be an unselfish player who will step it up when the team needs it. Thus far, he is OK as a background player

  18. I like Pitt as a low seed, and as an underdog. They should have a lot to prove after last season

  20. Last season the offense had to run through Patterson. This year it doesn't. He has a different roll but is contributing. The team is really emphasizing the PF position this year. Moore and Zanna's combined numbers are thru the roof.

  21. adams just needs to find a mean streak but even though he got pushed around a bit, the defense is immensely better with him in there. even when hes out of position his length, size, and athleticism he blocks and changes shots.

  22. Sorry to change subjects...

If Dooley is out at Tennessee... and Huxtable is out as DC for Pitt...
    quite possible...
Sal Sunseri as DC at Pitt...
Now Sal is someone who will open a can of whoopass... on the players. Very demonstrative... very excitable...

    1. PLEEEEAAAAAASSSSEEEEEE. No more Sunseri's at PITT.
We're just getting rid of one and you want another one. lol

And besides Tennessee's defense is horrendous, they gave up over 700 yards and 48 points to Troy just last week.

      No Thanks !!!!!

    2. Sal is one of the top recruiters in college...
I think last year he won the award for it...
Someone with his pedigree... pro coach and Alabama coach... can sure help Pitt on the recruiting side.
That is the biggest reason why you want Sal..
plus the alum, like me, like him...
      Sal believes in....
      "Hard work will beat talent....
      when...
      talent doesn't work hard"
and don't let that fool you as he wants talent...

    3. I agree with Joe D. When you can get someone with an SEC coaching pedigree with Pitt ties and he wants the job, you have to bring him in. Tino would be gone so there would be no family issues. I would assume he has recruting ties to the south. Ideal hire if you ask me.

  23. Sal is the one Sunseri we wouldn't mind having!!! He knows how to coach!!!! There are some players for him at Pitt!! I wouldn't mind at all.

  24. Durand Johnson actually checked-in to replace patterson and played the 3. I think it was an upgrade.

  25. Rivals put out 2014 Top 250...
    Only 4 from PA...
6 from NJ which is 2/3 the size of PA population wise... that is a surprise to me as for the most part, NJ HS football at public schools suck.
    12 from OH
    8 from MD
    8 from VA

    http://rivals.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/rankings/rank-3202/2014

Now... in my opinion... all 38 of these players should have an offer from Pitt... seems like a no brainer to me. I think some 160 offers made for 2013 class.

  26. Nice article, Chis, but you forgot to mention the best part of the game: not a single chance for Jamie to insert & use NASIR Robinson!

Isn't it nice for Pitt to play guys at 4 who actually have the size for the job? No more 6'-3 PFs who are long on heart but short on skills need apply.

  27. This weekend is probably Chryst's most important weekend of his entire career... whether he sees it that way is unknown..
Johnson, Boyd, Foster and the Iowa commit...

curious as to why the Boyd to Wisky trip cancelled..
and why is Chapman backing out... allegedly he wants mommy and daddy there.... but he should be there to help recruit... something is amiss with Chapmen.

This weekend may determine Pitts success on the football field 2 and 3 years from now... it is similar to the WVU game of 9-6... whereby Baldwin, Shanny, etc committed soon after the game and some at the game.

    2. Pitt's job just got harder as I don't think Foster will be in a great mindset tomorrow coming off of a heartbreaking overtime loss. I'm sure his mind is still going to be thinking all about that game during the visit. Pitt can't catch a break.

  30. Even if there was a football game today, I'd be much more excited for the hoops game. Funny what winning does, huh?

I'm actually relieved that there's no football game that I'll feel obligated to watch. I can't wait for college football to be over, and I normally pine for it from January through August and am thrilled when it returns. Anymore? It's just something to watch on a chilly Saturday. I'm not excited at all. Thanks, Pitt. You've ruined my college football Saturdays.

    1. I know what you mean, Pittikrit. Before this year, I read every syllable on every Pitt blog about CFB. But somehow, our boring head coach and all the 4th Qtr collapses by "Wanny's Revenge" at QB over the past three years, took all my steam away.

I've even missed several games that were on TV (I live out West...), never wouldda happened before. And I didn't even go back and watch the tapes or ESPN3.com.

I hope it'll be better next year, with ABT under center.

Point being, Pitt better be careful to not chase away its lifelong live-n-die fans.

  31. Last night, Boyd talked about going to Pitt this morning and Cam Saddler tweeted to him last night "we waiting for you". Somebody asked if that's where he's going to school and he said he didn't know yet. But it looks like Saddler and Todd Thomas is working him hard.

Then Gorman tweeted that Boyd likes the idea of playing with Foster, Dorian Johnson, and Rushel Shell. He quoted Boyd saying, "In my eyes, they've got championship hopes if we were to go there."

Foster tweeted a shout out to all of the Pitt players for writing letters. Apparently, the current Pitt players wrote Foster a bunch of letters to get him to go to Pitt. This morning he tweeted a photo of Steelers practice.

    2. Sounds like a full-court press by Pitt players, etc..

      That is a good thing...
obviously it has finally sunk in to Chryst..
      "just offer" doesn't work..

If Pitt beat UConn... I would say they had a 50-50 shot at landing 2 of 3...

    3. Kids aren't going to decide where to spend four years of their lives because of how Pitt plays against UConn.

    4. Kids want to know if Pitt/Chryst is a winning program.. right now the answer is NO.

they want to go to bowl games... this year it is NO and doesn't look good the next 2 years...

the Highly rated players want to know if Pitt can develop NFL players... exposure is important, training, etc... that is unknown at this point with Chryst and crew.

Remember, Johnson backed out of PSU due to bowl ban...

btw.. I think Rushel Shell put a call into the entire Quip defense to stop the Washington RB... so his single season wpial rushing record will stand!! Quips held him to 0 yards last year.

btw... which games were the Pitt coaches and/or players at last night? Clairton? CV? Quip? Wash? etc

    5. Lets be honest. You have no idea what kids want.

Now, I think they all will.

Foster and Johnson locks and Boyd a big lean toward Pitt now???
