Pittsburgh 86 Fordham 51

Two games, two really impressive performances.  Some thoughts:

1.  John Johnson is transferring and to be honest I don't see his departure hurting now or in the future.  In fact, Duran Johnson replaced him in the rotation and looked good with 8 points.

2.  Steven Adams again looked good but unfortunately it was in front of a lot of NBA scouts.  This time he came up with 13 points on 5 for 5 shooting and 3 for 4 from the line, 5 rebounds (all offensive),  2 steals, and a block.  Through his first two games, he is averaging 10.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 2.5 bpg, and 1.5 spg.  And to be honest, I don't even think he is in animal mode yet.

3.  James Robinson is so good with the ball in his hand that it's kinda ridiculous.  How good?  How about just one turnover in two games?  He had no turnovers in this game with 6 points again, with 3 assists, and 2 rebounds.

4.  Adams and Robinson are a combined 15-18 (83.3%) from the field this season.

5.  Trey Woodall had 12 points, 5 assists, and 2 steals while Lamar Patterson added 5 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists.

6.  In the opener Talib Zanna led the way with 20 points, and tonight had 8 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal, and a block.  But it was his sometimes backup J.J. Moore who led the way offensively with 20 points and 3-5 from three.

7.  The Panthers only had 6 turnovers and 3 of those were made by Dante Taylor.  But Taylor also led the way with 9 points.

8.  The Panthers leading scorer this season is Moore who is averaging 14.5 ppg.  Second is the player who starts in front of him, Talib Zanna, who is averaging 14.0 ppg.

9.  Pitt's starters had 44 points.  Their bench had 42 points.

  1. Your wrong about John Johnson. His outside shot will be missed, especially when JJ Moore isn't even starting.

When the competition heats up they will need an outside threat to loosen up Big East defenses.

    1. Pitt has a handful of outside shooters who are as good or better than John Johnson from outside including Duran Johnson who will take his place.

    2. Woodall, Patterson, Moore, and Duran.

    3. Patterson and Duran only on a good day but never day in and day out.

Woodall and Moore agreed but Moore doesn't start.

    4. I'm sorry, I can't imagine us missing an undersized combo guard. I'll take the guy with an equally good three point shot that is about 4 inches taller in Durand.

    5. Durand Johnson is a very good shooter. Will take him some time to loose the nerves, but I have seem him play and he can shoot. If his D was better he would be playing. Johnson was a weird recruit from the beginning. He was kind of a showboat in Philly with confidence about him that would either be a hit or not so much. He made some tweets last yr that were suspect and Jamie went out of his way to make some nice comments about him. In the end Jamie wants a Final Four and he needs good players. Johnson is a good player, but nothing we don't already have and can get. Good Luck to him.

    6. Last years stats show J Johnson and Woodall in a dead heat for three point percentage and jj Moore to be extremely less accurate. Durand Johnson is playing Gardner Webb level competition. Patterson was slightly better but has yet to make one this season.

  3. Just curious - which assistant was his primary recruiter?

  4. This team is deep...
10 players saw playing time of double digits...
They should be able to blow the doors off any team that wants to push the pace... just rotate fresh players and run withem...

  5. I had a feeling it was a departed coach - the reason I asked. Despite some cried to the contrary last season, I'm glad for some continuity in the coaching staff.

    1. Herrion recruited the canadian... who left mid-season and is now at UNLV.

    2. Close but no cigar ... Coach Bean Town at Towson recruited the Runnin' Canadian.

I do think JJ ends up at Marshall though which is probably a better fit.

    3. Pat Skerry is the coach that recruited Birch.

  6. Chris, the non-conference schedule is so weak that is my only complaint that I have of this team. We will not be battle tested much. It would be a great match up if Pitt could face Michigan. Your thoughts?

    1. Dixon simply doesn't like a difficult OOC schedule so it is what it is. I think the Michigan game, if they get there, will definitely be a test to see what they are.

  7. Chris, do you think this team is a final four team?

    1. I think it depends on Adams and Moore. If Adams can become a consistent force offensively, I think we definitely could go deep in March. Look at Arizona from 3 years ago. That team had very little elite talent outside Derrick Williams. But come March, Williams got hot and carried that team past Duke to the Elite Eight. Adams could have an impact like that.

If Moore becomes a consistent force, much like Young his Jr. year, then I could see Pitt being a tough team to beat in March.

    2. I think this is an Elite 8 team...
potential for Final 4 but tooooo early to tell... gotta wait until the Big East starts and see Dixon's rotation. Hope he uses 9-10 players and gives them minimum of 10 minutes... therefore, players are fresh. No need to play any player over 30min/game.

    3. Way to early to know but they definitely have Sweet 16 potential. After that it depends on a lot of factors that are yet to be determined.

  8. 9 - The OOC schedule is absolutely pathetic for a top flight team. I look around the country and see all kinds of high profile games and then I see Pitt on ESPN verse. Fordham. That's pathetic and has been for years under Dixon. Go and play somebody worth a damn.

  9. Chris,
Do you have updates on Pitt Basketball Recruiting. I know they were looking to over recruit so Johnson leaving should not change anything. I saw BeeJay is not interested in Pitt so who else is out there?

    1. I don't think they're in a hurry. They will take their time and evaluate what they want to do.
