Malcolm Gilbert transferring

Pitt's 7'0" sophomore center Malcolm Gilbert is transferring to Fairfield so that he can play with his brother.  Gilbert is the second Panther to transfer during the season.  Sophomore guard John Johnson transferred to Penn State a few games into the season.  J.J. Richardson, Khem Birch, and Isaiah Epps have also transferred from the program in the last two years.

  1. If adams leaves they literally dont have a center next year. No more good hs centers either. Juco or transfer is needed

  2. I said last yr we were in trouble with Big Man and he needs to start recruiting. Maybe now we can pick up a stud knowing that someone can play right away Don't know who is left, but he cannot reach for someone.

  4. I disagree with you that GIlbert wont be a big loss. He was top 100 out of high school (58th on espn) and would have been the starting center on next years team if adams leaves early. At the very worst he would have been the backup center cause of Taylor's graduation. Also not to mention it's very late in the recruiting process for the 2013 class and almost all of the good centers have committed to other elite programs. So potentially depending on the way things play out Talib Zanna could be the starting center next year with no backup.

    1. He's extremely raw and that's an understatement. He had a long way to go before it was beneficial to have him on the floor. He was ranked highly because he was 7 feet tall.

    2. That sounds like someone whos already on the roster...Adams was ranked highly cause he is 7 feet tall and look at the growing pains he's gone through...Gilbert would have immediatly had an impact on defense just like Adams has

    3. Gilbert is in his second year in the program and has done nothing. He's not even in the same ballpark as Adams.

      Delete
    4. Im not saying that he is but he could have had a similar impact on the defensive end if given the minutes... he played sparingly last year and redshirted this year....also I know it's early but Adams has not done anything during his time in the program

      Delete
    5. That's not true. The fact that so many Pitt fans think that Adams is flopping is only showing that Pitt still has a long way to go to be a basketball school.

      Delete
    6. Chris is right. There was an article a week or so ago i think by cbs that compared adams' stats to that of nerlens noel and isaiah austin. They play 30 minutes per game and adams plays 21 minutes. They found the stats per minute of adams and extended it to 30 minutes and his stats were almost identical to noels and austins. So, you cant even that adams isnt producing. He also has an effect that goes beyond stats. Nobody score in the paint when hes in there.

  5. Wish him well.
That will hurt Pitt next year. I'm sure Dixon was counting on Gilbert for next year which is why he red-shirted this year.

I'm ok with Dixon pushing out players at the end of the season... but players leaving mid-season screws up recruiting. Gilbert, Birch and Johnson left mid-season.

Dixon has 2 more ships to offer for 2013 class and its too LATE to get a decent player.

    2. I agree. They need to go juco or get a transfer. Really all they need to back up adams is a big body who rebounds, is decent defensively, and who doesnt turn it over on offense. This makes you value dante taylor and how hes performing in his backup role this year.

    3. Let me see if I understand your comment:
You're ok with JD over recruiting every year and pushing players out, but have a problem with kids leaving because they have to sit out for 2 or more years before they get playing time???????

I have a problem with mid-season transfers... screws up recruiting.
If Gilbert decided in the spring he was going to leave... I'm fine with that... it give Dixon enough time to find a decent replacement for 2013 class whereas now he has to scramble.

    1. It will provide an opportunity get playing time early, if you're a big man looking at Pitt. Jamie Dixon will need to bring in another player who can spell Adams at center and he won't have the luxury of working him in gradually.

      Delete
    2. I think so...
If Gilbert wanted to play with his brother... he could have left after spring. He must see Adams is not leaving after this year so he doesn't want to be a backup.
But Mike Young... PF 2013 must be smiling. He definitely won't redshirt. He will be utilized in the rotation next year as a frosh.
I don't think Adams is going to the NBA after 1 year..
So, in the BIGS... Pitt will have Adams, Zanna, and Young. I don't count Moore as a BIG.
Last year, I was hoping Dixon used Birchs ship for a BIG instead of Chris Jones.
Need 5 BIGS on the roster... my opinion.

  9. Pitt happens to be on this list twice but mid-season transfers is becoming pretty common.

Chris - should Pitt fans be concerned about the 2011 recruiting class dropping like flies? Or chalk it up to a bad class? Chemistry was a know issue last year on the team - it seems better this year but with two players leaving I'm starting to become concerned.

and Gilberts name is on it..
even though the announcement by Pitt was 12/27.
      Interesting..
If it were updated... online reports typically put the new "upadated" date and time on the report.

  10. Looks like a lot of players have transferred recently; however, it isn't clear that any of them (other than potentially Birch) would have amounted to a high quality DI starter. JD and Pitt will move on and be fine. Best wishes to Malcolm and I hope it works out for him.

  11. heres a link to the article i mentioned above. It was pittsburgh sports report, not cbs. If you stretch adams' stats to 30 minutes like noel and austin, he would be at a 10pt 9.8rb per game average. noel is at 11 pts 9 rbs, austin at 14pts 8 rebounds.

  14. I cannot believe that I am going to say this becuae six months ago I never thought it would be true but the one person who pitt cannot lose to either injury or transfer over the next four years is James Robinson. I don't know what it is about the kid but man does he hold the team together and as long as he is on the court I feel good about the teams chances. Maybe I will be thinking differently in the comin weeks when big east play starts but right now he is the one irreplaceable piece.

  15. Man, it is so frustrating being a Pitt fan. Regardless of Gilbert's ceiling, it's not good to see so many players transfer.

Their friend Jankovic is at Missouri.
The Kiski Prep coach was the handler for all 3 until others got involved and they transferred to Huntington Prep.

    1. have you looked at the roster for next year? adams is the only center.

    2. The issue is next year... lack of depth..
if their is an injury it will become a major issue.
      Next year... the BIGS are:
      Adams, Zanna,
      Mike Young is incoming frosh...
and JJMoore isn't really a PF... so I don't count him.
So it's not whether or not Gilbert is or will be a star.. it is he is a known quantity and can provide depth next year... and probably be a starter if Adams leaves after Sophmore year.

In 2 years... Zanna and Moore are gone and most likely Adams... so all that is left is Young...
So, the "fretting" as you call it is for next year and the year after..

      Delete
    3. How is Gilbert a known quality? Pitt fans have a way of overvaluing their players but I never expected it from you. The truth is, Gilbert may have eventually contributed but he was a long way from being a factor. Dixon will bring in another center and it until we see who that is, there is no reason to panic. The program has yet to lose a top player. Birch would have been good for many schools but Pitt wasn't one of them. He didn't have the mentality for a Dixon coached team. Bottom line, at the end of the day, Pitt has more talented players coming in then they are losing.

    4. Chris,
Perhaps you can do a writeup of 2013 Centers and PF's still available that Pitt has a shot at.
      I did a rivals search...
seems a lot are still uncommitted for 2013 and have a rating by rivals... 2star or better.
Pitt is going to the ACC so that could be a draw... saw several prospects from Florida and east of the Mississippi River.

    2. i think they need a center like you said but they also should finally reel in jamel artis because after next year pitt doesnt have a small forward. You have to always be looking ahead. This class they need artis and a center. Next class they need another sf, a pf, and another center for the 3 available ships (if adams leaves it would be 4).

  24. PG article on Foster... 2 things stood out..
"I think what really sold me how much they wanted him was one of their assistant coaches came up here this season, stuck around us all day from morning to night, kind of hung out with us and then went to our game against Moon," Lyons said. "That's kind of when I knew they really wanted him."

Pitt could have done that EVERY week if they wanted him... only a 40 min drive for Chryst or Engram. And, that is what I said Pitt needs to do IF they want to land the top recruits out of wpial.

    The other quote was:
Foster still has not scored high enough yet on the SAT or ACT to be eligible as a freshman.
The 2016 NCAA standards... he would be an automatic red-shirt as a Frosh if he clears the lower entrance standard.

    1. Joe D,

They did! This is from a trib article:

Lyons was impressed with Engram‘s thorough approach to recruiting Foster.

“He spent many days not only coming to school and meeting Robert and his teachers,” Lyons said, “but he drove around to people in the community. He wanted to get to know Robert as a person.”

In fact, it looked like he spent more than just one day. Also, I read either in Post or Times that Foster wants to continue his relationship with Engram. This is far from over.

      Delete
    2. Joe Bull, thanks for giving the complete context of how Engram's recruiting was viewed by CV. Joe D instead cherry-picked the quote that supports his never-ending campaign against Chryst and his staff and their recruiting.

Just below the quote you cite by Lyons about Engram's thoroughness, Foster's mother said the following, "I do thank (Pitt's coaches) for their professionalism'.

Mike White has reported that when Lyons went to dinner with Foster on Dec. 20, Foster told Lyons Pitt was it. Also, the family was under the impression Foster would choose Pitt.

It seems clear that Pitt was Foster's choice until the last minute, when he surprisingly chose Bama (which I still think is fishy). The Pitt staff must have done something right to be that close, and Engram it seems invested a lot of time and energy into landing this kid.

So let me see if I understand this: a Bama assistant came here for one day, and that was enough to convince Lyons that Bama really wanted Foster. Yet Engram spent days talking to teachers, and people in the community, and to some people that isn't enough to convince them that Pitt genuinely wanted him?

None of us know for sure how much time Engram and Chryst invested, but it seems they spent enough to impress Lyons and others, including family members of Foster.

    3. Someone from Pitt should have been at CV... every week... go to every game when not out of town.. and at least 1 practice per week starting in July.

That is what Sherril did when he recruited Dorsett to Pitt... not to mention he brought is mother to deliver homemade pecan pie to Dorsetts mom.
Pitt was 1-10 when Sherril recruited Dorsett... he visited Hopewell 3-4 times a week... and prior to LOI day... he was sleeping on Dorsetts couch so that other colleges would not try to pursuade Dorsett from Pitt!!!

Whatever Engram/Chryst have done isn't enough...

      Recruiting class ranked about 35-40...
Anyone who thinks that is good or makes excuses doesn't know what it takes for a winning program... or you are satisfied with 8-4 in Big East. I guarantee Pitt is not going to sniff at 8-4 in ACC unless changes are made in recruiting, coaching, and accountability.

    9. give Chryst a while to succeed or fail. One of the characteristics of the Wis program was winning with 2 and 3 star recruits; we'll see if this happens here. Don't underestimate his evaulation skills just yet

      Delete
    10. Joe D,

We all want Chryst to be held accountable, but we want to give him more than one year to prove himself. For some unfathomable reason, you seem determined to judge him after only one year. That is absurd, and just plain unfair.

For all we know, someone from Pitt was at CV every week. With all that's happened at Pitt in the last several years, I think it's a good sign that Pitt nearly snagged Foster. Yes, in the long run, close doesn't count, but I take it as a good sign for now that we came oh so close.

I really question your allegiance to Pitt. It's been mentioned that you're a troll and just post here to aggravate others. I'm starting to think that's an accurate assessment.

Thank you for your take on the bond transfer. much appreciated. someone over on smizik blog said the 2011 class was largely recruited by an assistant (Herrion?) who is no longer here and once he left the players were leaving. Said Dixon had a hands off approach in 2011 but much more hands on approach in 2012 with better results.

I know skerry brought birch but I am sure Dixon had large involvement in the other recruitments

  28. My take on Boyd's comments...
    - Pitt in driver seat.. he likes Engram and knows many players which is a plus to him.
    - Michigan State is #2... (D.Cox of Jeanette is there and he knows the QB)

    - WVU is pissed at Boyd for skipping out on visit and he doesn't think defense is good.
    - Rutgers is ok... but he doesn't know anyone there.
    - PSU... he likes the QB but doesn't like that no bowls.
    - Tennessee... don't think so... new staff.

He spoke how it would have been good if Foster went to Pitt... the 2 of them playing together, etc.
I never thought Pitt had a shot at Boyd... I always said if they could get either Foster or Boyd... that would be a good day at the office.
