Pitt loses defensive coordinator Dave Huxtable

Former Pitt defensive coordinator Dave Huxtable has taken the job as the defensive coordinator for NC State.  There he will work under new Wolfpack head coach Dave Doeren.  Both coached at Wisconsin previously.

Look for the possibility of Charlie Partridge to come back to Pitt.  Partridge was a former linebackers coach for the Panthers.  An excellent Florida recruiter, Partridge was the co-defensive coordinator and the associate head coach for Wisconsin this season.

  1. Not a surprise...
I expected Huxtable to be nudged out...

Don't rule out Sal Sunseri or Teryl Austin..

  2. How about Randy Shannon, ex Mia Hurricane HC and presently LBs coach at TCU (I think) Familiarity with ACC and has some good FLA connections.

  3. How about Randy Shannon, the ex-Mia Hurricane HC? I think that he's presently the LBs coach at TCU. He's familiar with the ACC, has the FLA connections and wasn't too bad of a DC at Mia.

  4. What aboutTodd Orlando? He is a Wisconsin grad and a Pittsburgh native. He is a good recruiter in Florida and was the DC at FIU

  5. I was wondering why Huxtable would leave after 1 year. $$$. Here is what Bielema is paying coaches at ARK.
New Arkansas coordinators Jim Chaney and Chris Ash have each signed multi-year contracts worth $550,000 annually. Also, new offensive line coach Sam Pittman will receive $275,000.
What was Huxtable getting at Pitt? Is NC State a step up?

Pitt will find a suitable replacement. Let's just be glad we kept the head coach.

  14. Partridge, would be nice. I also like T Austin. He made $450k as DC at Florida. It is a good opportunity to upgrad with a dynamic coordinator that can coach and recruit.

The Bradley talk will start and Doke, I think you are opposed to that hire although that was stated when it was a head coaching position. I am not so sure how that works now. Larry Johnson Sr. seems to have weathered the storm.

  18. Patridge would be a huge get for the panthers. He is also good on special teams. Coached the Pitt special teams unit that produced Derek Kinder on that block for Revis. A Florida connection like huxtable, solid recruiter, and coached JJ Watt and Scott McKillop. I think Sal would be fine to. A mean recruiter plus part of that saban brain trust. I know it didn't work out at Tennessee but Tennessee was outclassed. His linebackers at Bama did well. Don't think its possible for Austin and Tomsula for the reasons stated above. But alot of turnover in coaching this year so hopefully we can snag a good one.

  19. DC's are hired on merit. One step from being a head coach. I hardly think anybody hired, that there first inclination is "I'm going to replace my new boss." That said, my vote goes to Charlie Partridge. There are plenty of head jobs that open every year. I for one, love rumors.

  21. not going to happen but id love for pitt to get trooper taylor. there might not be a better recruiter in college football. again, i am in no way predicting or suggesting that they will either pursue him or hire him.

i dont see tomsula, austin, or sunseri although i think they would all be home run hires. i think charlie partridge would be a very good hire and the other name that most pitt fans bring up in todd orlando. i think he would be a good hire although he runs a 3-4 and another scheme change might not be the best thing for this defense even though i think the personnel would fit that rather well

      question is...
recent article regarding he may need to go prep...

      Delete
    2. Im not concerned about that. Im more concerned with him actually signing with pitt. If he were to sign with pitt hed be a starter and playmaker right away and that would only be helped by a prep year as i consider a year of prep as basically a red shirt in that the kid can mature and continue to fill out.

      Delete
    3. But prep also means that he would be able to leave for the NFL after his sophomore year.

      Delete
    4. that'd be a good situation!! considering he isn't even committed to Pitt yet, his NFL timeline is the furthest thing from my mind right now. if he winds up at Pitt and is so good that he leaves early, early a la Fitz or Shady, we would be so lucky!

      Delete
    5. Supposedly it is really up in the air right now from people in CV. Coaches say that they don't really even know.

Two things to watch: Foster's mom supposedly has given her blessing to either school and just wants Foster to go where he wants to go. Before, she was pushing Pitt and Pitt only because she liked coach Engram. My guess is that she still likes Pitt more, but doesn't have a problem with the Alabama coaches.

The second thing is that CV coaches are promoting Alabama more than Pitt and that could have affect his decision as time draws near. It may be a situation where whoever talks to him last might convince him either way.

I feel for the kid because it's a tough choice. Play for a perennial national championship contender or play for your friends, family, and community and maybe build a winning program. My gut says he chooses Bama but maybe I am just trying to not get my hopes up to be let down. As Pitt fans, we should be very familiar with that feeling.

But here is a better suggestion...
These kids had 4 years to get their HS grades in order and prepare for SAT to get a decent score...
if the parents and the kids choose to goof-off... so be it...
Blame the parents/kid first and foremost... then the guidance counselor and HS coach.

CV will look pretty bad if they make a big deal of Foster... televised, etc this week... and Foster then goes prep!!

    2. It's a combo of grades and SAT... and I don't think you can do what you are suggesting... and the college coach would say... go prep and get playing time. CCBC doesn't have football!! lol

But here is a better suggestion... the parents/kid has 4 years to get their grades and SAT scores in order!!! and you want to make that up in 3months... I don't think that is what they had in mind when Prop 48 went into effect some 25+ years ago.

CV will look bad if they do a whole hoopla (television, etc) over Foster signing if he ends up going prep!!!!

  48. People are getting way too worked up at this time about Foster's academics. It's been known since his sophomore year that his transcripts weren't good. Everybody has been trying to get him qualified. He may not make it, but it's important to note that in similar instances in the past the kid almost always made it. Few had further to go than Darrelle Revis. I mean, the kid got 400 on the SAT to sign his name but still managed to only get a 560, but in the end he still made it. Dejuan Blair is another one. I would talk to him on the phone in the summer as he was coming back from night school classes. Everybody said he wouldn't make it, but he did. If there was no chance at all of him qualifying, I doubt that Alabama would be all over him right now.

    1. Chris - when you say "Alabama is all over him" - what exactly does that mean?

We've heard various reports that Saban has flown up to Pittsburgh recently to try and close the deal with Foster.

Do you know if he has or does "all over" mean via social media, texts snail and e-mail to....he and his family?

And, what is Pitt doing with two days left to counter Alabama's overtures?

      Delete
    2. Wow... never knew that about revis...
his rivals profile showed 2.8 gpa and 560 on SAT...
That is insufficient per NCAA Clearinghouse..
Obviously he retook the test as he would have needed a 3.15 gpa for a 560 SAT...

      Delete
    3. I mean all over him as in they are recruiting him hard. Pitt would still recruit Foster hard if he was going to prep school, because two years with Foster would still be a huge coup for them. But Alabama goes after the Robert Fosters of the world every year. They aren't going to try this hard for a kid that's guaranteed to go to prep school.

Yeah, the schedule was not great although I think partial blame goes to the Big East and Virginia. The Big East because they led Dixon believe they were part of the Big East/SEC challenge, and Virginia, because of their loss to Delaware.

I think if we would have had Michigan, Virginia and lets say Vanderbilt (not sure which SEC team Pitt would have been matched up against), that would have been a decent non-conference schedule especially if they all would have been non-home games.

  53. Time will tell. Let's see how they do early on in the big east. I am not sure steve adams would get much time against tougher non conf competition. We are still a young team. They do need to play tougher competition though.

  54. Chris word from CV is that Fosters recruiting is not done after this commitment. Lyons is not closing the door after the 21st. Just a heads up

    2. They've had a few Ok teams in the past.

Still far more appealing than the usual MAC or I-AA school that shows up.

Does Pitt have to return the favor and head out there?

    4. UNM was terrible -- like, worst D-1 program in America terrible -- under former coach Mike Locksley. Dude was totally lost, and even got into some trouble to boot (ala Mike Heywood, but I forget the details).

But this season they hired former Notre Dame coach Bob Davie, who had a great year (especially considering what little he had left to work with...). Turned them into a wishbone team, like Air Force.

Living in Denver, I selfishly hope there's a return road game to Albq. There are worse places to go on a road trip....

  56. They say on ESPN Justin Moody will most likely commit to Pitt soon. Would be great if Foster and Moody in one week.

  57. Foster has gone back and forth all day at school but seems to have settled on Bama. This was after his mom gave her true blessing for him to go wherever he wanted to go. I think he really did like both schools but this was a very tough decision for him.

Pitt fans need to root for Nick Saban to go to the Browns because then Foster may sign with Pitt, but that would be tough on him too.
