Pittsburgh 27 South Florida 3

1.  The good news is that Pitt has made a bowl game, which is obviously good for many reasons.  It will be the Pinstripe Bowl, the Beef O'Brady Bowl, or the BBVA Compass Bowl (for the third year in the the row).  If I had to guess, I think it will be the Beef O'Brady Bowl.

2.  Tough to gauge the Panthers in this game because South Florida was so atrocious, but it obviously sets a good tone for the bowl game, and for next season if the Panthers can pull off a win in that bowl game.

3.  The Panthers defense held the Bulls to 115 yards including 6 rushing yards on 20 carries.  The Panthers also had 3 interceptions and forced a fumble.

4.  Ray Graham ran for 93 yards on 26 carries, a 3.6 avg., and 2 touchdowns.  Rushel Shell chipped in with 9 carries for 46 yards, a 5.1 avg.

5.  Tino Sunseri had his normal mostly good, but sometimes infuriating game, and ended up completing  19 of 25 passes for 211 yards, and a touchdown.  Once again he had no interceptions.

6.  Mike Shanahan had his third 100-yard game of the season as he led all Panthers with 9 catches and 116 yards.

7.  Devin Street added 6 catches for 72 yards, and J.P. Holtz added 18 yards on 3 catches, along with a 2-yard touchdown catch.

8.  Ronald Jones had a very nice 38-yard punt return.  Hopefully there will be more of that in the future.  He got the call because Cam Saddler was suspended for the game because of an undisclosed disciplinary incident.

9.  Matt Yoklic has a great game punting with a 44.6 avg. and two kicks inside the 5-yard line.

  1. It has to be Pinstripe Bowl with Pitt v WVU on 12/29.

Some are calling it... "the brawl in the bronx".
    or "Bronx Brawl"..

That bowl will actually get good attendance from both WVU and Pitt. Christmas week... many students will make the roadtrip..

Problem is... since both Pitt and WVU left Big East... I'm sure Big East will scuttle the matchup...

    1. Actually, the problem is that WVU will probably get a bid before the Pinstripe rep get to offer. But the Pinstripe folks would really like the Brawl....they'd pack Yankee Stadium (I'd be there for sure) and the TV ratings would be very good.

    2. I think if Pinstripe wants that matchup...
which would be much bigger money for them..
they would have to "pay" the other bowls or conferences to get the desired matchup... CBS Sports is predicting a WVU v Pitt matchup.
Pinstripe is suppose to get Big12#7 v BigEast#4.

WVU is in 4 way tie for 5th...
Pitt is 5th... Syracuse is slated for Pinstripe..

  2. They are bowl eligible. I don't see where they've made a bowl.

    That's called jumping the gun.

Pitt basketball comes out sleeping again. Do that against a good team and its a loss. Where are the resume OOC wins at?

    1. You'd normally be right. Most years, being bowl eligible is no guarantee.

However from what I read going into yesterday, this year -- pathetic as this sounds -- there won't be enough 6-win teams to fill all the bowl slots.

It will be curious to see what they do: allow a few 5-win teams to make a hardship case (like UCLA did last year with a below-.500 record, since they were 6-6 going into the Pac-12 championship game)? Cancel some bowl games?

    2. The Big East has more contracts with bowls than bowl eligible teams. Pitt is guaranteed to make a bowl. It will be either Pinstripe, BBVA Compass, or Beef O'Gradys.

  3. when you play ateam like this, I like the QB being a game manager .... as opposed to a Tommmy Gun Maddox throwing INTS giving the Texans frachise their first win

  4. 1st - welcome back Chris - we really missed your posts.

I think that if we were fortunate enough to get either/or Foster and Boyd, Pitt could be loaded next year with a couple of 'ifs':

    1) - one of the 3 QB's has to take complete control. Imo, it will be Voytik with Savage being the back-up and Chapman redshirting.

    2) - DJ and Bisnowaty have to play well as 1st year starters.

    3) - Schell can't get hurt.

    4) - Ejuan Price comes back 100%.

    5) - Street and Donlad come back period.

If these 5 things happen, look the f out next year.

    1. !) it'll be savage not voytik

      2) agree

      3) shell can't get hurt but i'm still noyt afraid to give isaac bennett the ball, or if jojo kemp commits that be a nice get

      4) agree

      5) street and donald will be back, period.

  5. Sunseri went over 3,000 yards passing on the season and Ray Graham broke the 1,000-yard rushing barrier. That's the first time in Pitt history that the team has had both in the same season. - Sam Werner Post Gazette

Chryst seems to have lived up to his billing as someone who knows something about offense. Now wait until when he has a quarterback who can win the close games.

  6. Your comment that Tino "had his normal mostly good, but sometimes infuriating game" is pure poetry. Made me laugh. Nice win by Chryst and the Panthers.

  7. Bowl game five years in a row ain't bad...but obviously we'd like to see better records and better bowls. Hopefully its the Pinstripe Brawl...cause you sell Pitt fans on a trip to NYC against WVU. (I think even Joe D might go to that one)

And before I see anything about people being correct and predicting 6-6 and all the "look at me, I was right, told you so!" comments...I say B.S., at 0-2 you guys were the same who said they'd be lucky to win 3-4 games so which prediction you going with?

I have a prediction, Pitt will finish the year 6-7 (or 7-6). I'm a genius too!

    1. Hey.... that's me.. lol
      I predicted 6-6 and after 0-2... I thought 4 games.
I never expected wins against VTech or Rutgers...

To quote Chryst... The team was CONSISTENTLY.... INconsistent.

  9. Disappointing for Cam Saddler. Whatever the infraction...serious lack of character?

Farewell Tino, after this last one more game. A refreshing item going forward in 2013, a first year starter that actually might understand the game.

Really looking forward to letter of intent day. It's still cloudy, but it looks like PC might be able to steer this ship in the right direction.

Thank you Ray Graham, Mike Shanahan, Ryan Turnley, Chris Jacobson and others for being not only good soldiers, but representing the program as mature young men should. Worthy of your scholarship.

    Hail to Pitt.

    1. Saddler should have been suspended numerous times....
Can't believe anyone puts up with his crap..
he is a cheerleader.. put him in a skirt and give him pom poms.

    2. Suspended for being a cheerleader?

That same enthusiasm may well bring Foster to Pitt.

  10. DL improved significantly during this season

as much or more than any unit

    very encouraging

  11. you don't think the the only way that Pitt comes close to losing last night was for the QB to make careless throws and turnovers!

typical yinzer mentality after a 27-2 win. I seem to remember the same attitude a few years ago after an opening 38-3. Replace the senior QB (Stull) with the upstart freshman QB (Tino)

  12. This was a real nice year given the qb situation and what I mean is this.Tino had a real good year so that shows me that offensively, our coaching staff does a real nice job. Honestly, when Coach Chryst goes back over the eason, he will see another 2-3 games he should have won except for the quarterback he had to use, pooped his drawers under pressure.

I am not saying I wouldn't have done the same thing, but my suggestion to you all is that if after your 5th year at a job, you are still making the same mistakes you did during your first year, you have hit your ceiling and it is time to go in a different direction.

Arthur Doakes was a pleasant surprise and if the coaches can get him and tj clemmings playing every snap with a nasty edge, we will be fine for a few years. I like the direction of the team and it is imperative to extend Chryst so that he is always five years out on the contract. Hey Smiley, look at PSU, Obrien is tied up for 9 years. That allows him another advantage in recruiting. I.E. look kid, times are tough and our scholarships are limited. You come here, I'll be here and we can navigate it together. Paul Chryst can't say that to a recruit. Shame on you Smiley. You must go as you are the weakest link.

  13. I agree with Huff.. Give Chryst a long term contract. I think he'll win consistently and he certainly is a good representative for the university. Of course.. I thought the same about the Stache and look at what happened to him.

  14. another good thing is that Tino stayed healthy the entire despite a few vicious blindsides .... this allowed Anderson and Vortik to redshirt. I would prepare Jones or Gonzalez as a backup QB for the bowl.

    3. Need to go back in the day.. 30 years ago... whereby only 15 bowls.... and the bowls competed against each other for teams... they would 'woo' the teams to come to their bowl over the other.
Back then, bowl money went to the team... not the league... back then, there were no tv deals or league money, etc.
But then again... I don't believe there should be 35 bowl games... 25 is fine... and 6-6 teams shouldn't be going to a bowl.

  17. It would be nice to get an evaluation of PC's staff. I thought Brooks Bollinger and possibly PC did a great job with Tino. Huber gets a C grade for the Oline. Robinson gets a B but he had mona lisa (graham) and starry night (Shell)to work with. Rudolph a D on TE's but a B in recruiting. Engram A overall recruiting and coaching. Inoke had the boys at the end playing well took'em quite long enough might be what to expect with the system overhaul, I don't know but gets a C+. Haering a B the miscues in the beginning was made up for it with hard working play later on by the whole line backing depth chart. House B+. Huxatable B a respectable defense. Maybe some shakeup though. Engram and house we have to try and hang on to.
