Pitt 2013 football schedule complete

While the dates for the ACC schedule are not set yet, the opponents were just announced.  Needless to say, the move to the ACC is already paying off.

Florida State
Miami
North Carolina
Virginia

Away:

Navy 10/26
Duke
Georgia Tech
Virginia Tech
Syracuse

  1. Bama better look out for the Panthers, because with that schedule that is who they will be playing in the final game of the season next year!!!

  2. Pitt fans can't use the home schedule as an excuse for poor attendance anymore. ND and FSU will be preseason Top 10 and Miami will likely be in Top 25.

    1. UNC is a possible top 25 preseason team, too.

    2. Great schedule! There shouldn't be any reason to see the fans "disguised as empty seats" with that home schedule. I think that UNC will be an under the radar team this year.

  3. What's your over/under on that schedule Chris?
I see Pitt at 6-6 in regular season again. Tough schedule.

    1. I'm guessing that Vegas would probably put the over/under on Pitt at maybe 6.5

    2. 6-7 wins is unacceptable.

  4. That's a pretty large step up. Now all we need is a good football team and everything is in place.

  5. Great schedule for first year in the league. No reason to complain about the home schedule by season ticket holders. Florida State at home was a nice welcome to the conference scheduling gift by ACC. Agree with many others that there should be several sellouts at Heinz field. Looking forward to road trips to Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Duke.

  6. Chris- I'm curious about where you think Aaron Donald will fit in an NFL defense. 3-4 end? Thanks love the site.

  7. I think every game is winnable except for FSU...with that said, it's Pitt and we tend to lose some we shouldn't and win some we shouldn't...but Chryst 2nd year I see improvement and 8-4.

    Wins: Nova(gimme), New Mexico(gimme), Miami(not your Dad's U), UNC(It's home), UVA(It's home), Navy(should) Duke(should), VT(always do)

Losses:FSU(too good), ND(up in the air), GT(it's away), Cuse(it's away)

Although I think UNC, ND, Miami, and Cuse could be flipped

    1. Win 8 games...
My opinion, that means the offense is clicking.
And offense is the biggest unknown next year. Savage, O-line, WR opposite Street, and how Bennett/Shell combo perform.

  8. Posted this elsewhere, but here is why take on what Pitt needs to do.
Not necessarily what Pitt is going to do, especially since we don't know what the team is going to look like.

    Can't lose: (3-0)
    Villanova
    New Mexico
    @Navy

    No explanation needed

    Shouldn't lose: (2-1)
    @Duke
    @ Syracuse
    Virginia

I think for sure that Pitt is better than these teams (this season's game at Syracuse notwithstanding). I've said before Duke is the one ACC team that Pitt - from a perspective standpoint - can't lose to. Still, upsets do happen, so I'll take 2 out of 3.

The middle of the pack (1-2)
    North Carolina
    @ Georiga Tech
    @ Virginia Tech

Pitt is going to be lumped in with these teams; you would hope/expect them to split this group. Since you can't split 3 teams 50/50, and 2 of them are on the road, I'll take 1 of 3.

    Big home games (2-1)
    Notre Dame
    Miami
    Florida State

The one thing that has killed Pitt from a PR standpoint since 2000 is Pitt's tendancy to blow the big game at home. That really needs to be fixed; Heinz Field has to be seen as a difficult place for a team to come in and win at.
The most important of these, IMO, is Miami. Pitt is going to have to play these guys every year, and likely beat them to win the division. The last Pitt win was 1997, can't remember the previous time before that. I think the last win at Miami was in the 60's. This needs to be reversed now.
    And remember, upsets do happen

Guess I'm saying Pitt needs to go 8-4.
Again, not saying that they will.

    1. This is an excellent way to break down the schedule. 2-1 against "shouldn't lose" teams is both classic and accurate for Pitt. Where you erred is the "big home games". Pitt will go 0-3 or 1-2 in those games.

      Unfortunately, we're looking at 7-5 or 6-6.

But let's hope Savage can change the Pitt culture.

      Delete
  9. OK for years I have drunk the same Kool-Aid as some of you. But not anymore...twenty years after I graudated I finally have learned I think to be realistic. 2-1 vs ND, the U and FS? No way. 0-3 is far, far more likely. That puts us at 6-6. I hope I am wrong (and wrong in the right direction!).

Remember how an average Miami team took us part a few years ago...what has really changed since then?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, the coach and the QB :)

Again, not saying Pitt will go 2-1 against those teams, but they need to. Protect the House!

      6-6 is same old Pitt.

It's college football, BTW, upsets happen. Can you still believe that NC State beat FSU?
Problem is, Pitt has scored so few upsets over the years (while finding a way to get upset constantly), we forget that these things happen. A lot.

  10. One thing is for certain - they won't have many opportunities to play down to the competition.

This is great. I just hope the AD doesn't muck this up by increasing prices this season - at least for season renewals. This past year's slate should have earned we the faithful a pass. They should keep prices flat and creatively package some mini-plans:

    - The Catholic 2 gamer - ND and Nova

    - The Nova+ - the Nova game plus your choice of 2 others except FSU

    - The infraction pack - UNC and Miami

    Other thoughts.....

    - if we get some real gifts from the ACC the FSU and/or Miami games will be played in Nov

I'm a bit concerned that there will be too many Thursday night games (I drive up from Virginia), but one has to believe that the Saturday nooner will be the exception and not the norm.

JoeD - I'd like to order some pecan pies for my tailgate parties. Where do I send the check?

  12. Chris,
Who is being talked about as DC?
Hard to believe it's 1 month already.
Seems to me it is someone coming from the NFL that is still playing, otherwise, that person would have been named by now.
At this point, I would be surprised if it were someone from the college ranks.

  14. Has anybody else noticed we play not one, not two, but three options teams next season?

Yep, New Mexico, Navy and Georgia Tech.

Here's to hoping Mason comes back strong. That man is a tackling machine.

  15. good point panther. It is interesting to see when this GT game will be. Hopefully it is near the NM or navy game so there will not have to be a change in pace. You think Steve Pederson was actually trying to prepare for Navy and GT?? I give him the benefit of the doubt and say thats why he did that. I don't know if any of you guys remember when a 1-AA team went into the swamp and almost knocked off Florida because the option gave them problems. The name of the team slipped my mind

  16. Great schedule by ACC-they worked to accomodate Pitt, in my opinion with bringing Fla State in for 2013. Can't wait to catch a few games at Heinz field. What a great day to be a Pitt fan and should not hurt to persuade a few potential borderline recruits as to why they should make Pitt their new college home.. HTP!!!!!

  17. In 1929, Duke began play at Wallace Wade Stadium against none other than Pitt. So, that's pretty cool and should make for a nice road trip.

  18. Pantherlair reporting... Chryst pulled offer from committ James Julius out of Florida.
    Thank goodness.
    I'm starting to like Chryst.
He must have seen Julius track times (slow for CB)... lol Ya think you can do that before extending an offer?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 11.69 100m is far from slow. Just want to point that out to anybody that doesn't know about track times. Don't want people to get the wrong idea.

      Delete
    2. For a skill position like CB... that is slow.. in my opinion.
his best 200 is 23.75... best Long Jump of 17'2" shows no leg strength. Girls can jump 17+ feet.
He is 5'10" and 170#... so what will happen to his speed when he puts on 20lbs.
Shai McKenzie is sub-11.0 in 10th grade! and he is over 200#

Julius measurables didn't warrant an offer from Pitt.. I said it before. I'm glad Chryst pulled the offer. I think they offered in hopes to get the WR who committed elsewhere.

      Delete
    3. McKenzie is a national recruit and an elite athlete. Not every player Pitt gets is going to be like him. K'waun Willams and Lafayette Pitts don't run as fast as Julius and the last time I looked they are pretty good. Personally I was hoping for better than Julius so I won't care if he goes elsewhere, but you are misinforming people on here on pretty much a daily basis.

      Delete
    4. Julius has a pretty nice offer sheet: Boise State, BC, Cincinnati, Iowa State, Memphis, MAC schools etc. Also played at a pretty high level in Florida. I'd rather take a chance at a 2 star prospect from FL than a 2 star in PA. I agree with Chris I was hoping for better than Julius but he is far from the huge reach Joe D is spinning him out to be and would not be the biggest project in this class.

I see Jester Weah is visiting this weekend. I wouldn't mind Pitt throwing an offer at him. Big WR at 6'3" could be used like Shannahan. I don't know if Pitt will give him a scholly though with the impending Webb commitment at WR (Webb, Boyd, Challingsworth, and Green already committed).

Doke, what you think of Jacquille Veii from MD? De-committed from MD and is visiting next week. Looks like a guy with some good speed.

      Delete
    5. I mean in the end its always good to have speed but we will not be able to out recruit Miami, Clemson, GT, and UNC for speed players. Just a geography thing mostly. It will be good to differ from their style of play. If we out recruit them in muscle, size, and toughness (which we can) we can beat those guys. Shell may not have elite speed but doesn't matter when no one can tackle him. Like that Lacy guy from Bama, and he added that break your ankle spin move as well.

      Delete
    6. Weah is visiting next weekend

      Delete
    7. I would take Veii over Weah any day. Weah is like Reggie Green. Both are big with good straight line speed, but after the catch they don't have much explosion and quickness. Veii on the other hand is only about 5'10" 170, but he can flat out fly. Pitt already has a Weah in Green, but Veii fives them something different. Pitt needs more speed.

      Delete
    8. this weekend...next weekend its all the same. If Pitt offers he accepts on the spot. If Pitt doesn't offer he probably goes to Colorado State since he already has visited and liked it there. He's a different type of WR, bigger body type like Shannahan. It's better to have different types of WR than the same undersized ones that were recruited by Graham. Makes it harder on the defense and creates matchup problems. This is all a moot point though if Pitt doesn't offer.

      Delete
    9. Veii reportedly ran a 4.27 forty at one camp. Weah is solid but veii has absurd speed and pitt coaches like him as both a reciever and corner

      Delete
    10. Veii ran a 4.49 in 40 electronic time. He has lower hand time numbers but handtimes are not reliable for short distances (100m and under).
      btw.. 4.49 electronic is fast!!

He runs 4.3 according to this article. Whether it's 4.49, 4.27, 4.3, he's fast enough.

    12. that was a hand time of 4.3.
Rule of thumb... add .24 to handtime.

  20. The schedule is nice, but Pitt probably won't play FSU for another 6 years. And they won't play them again at home for another 12 years.

The ACC needs to get rid of the permanent crossover games. If it's that important for two teams to play each other every year, put them in the same division!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I've got a hunch that our DC will be Tomsula. If I recall correctly, I think he was under consideration when Chryst initially took over. The wait seems to be for the niners season to end. Is this a realistic possibility Chris?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Tomsula would be the coup of all coups, but I don't see it in a million years. He has a lot of buzz in the NFL and could be an NFL head coach soon. Coming to Pitt as a DC, or anyplace in college as a DC, would be a step back.

      Delete
    2. Many Pitt fans had that hunch last year, didn't turn out so well. I don't think Tomsula is coming our way for several reasons, money being one of them.

      Delete
  22. I don't think there is a connection between the two(Chryst and Tomsula). Coaching hires almost always come from a connection. Either they worked together or played ball together at some point.

Maybe they did and I just don't know it. I know I would be very surprised if its Tomsula!!!

  23. I guess he does coach with Geep but I still find it odd if he would hire him.

    1. Pitt DLine coach came as a recommendation from Oregon State HC... Chryst worked under HC at Oregon state.
So, not necessarily have to work with Chryst but be recommended by someone Chryst has worked with.
So, Tomsula is realistic... so is Leavitt.. but the South Florida incident may rule out Leavitt.

Just got back for the Pitt game where once again we lost to a team with better pure athletes. Saw them even take our quickest guy, Jj Moore, off the dribble.
I have a serious question that I hope you, or some other expert of the game, will answer. Why is this Pitt team so bad at rebounding?

    Taylor had zero today
    Adams had six

You need much better production from the center position If u dont n't have quick guards (like pitt doesnt) to proviide more offense.

A seven footer like Adams should have seven just by accident and be near double digits every game. Taylor should have at least five a game.

    What gives?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There's no excuse why Adams doesn't rebound more. He's not continually aggressive and neither is the team. Rebounding is effort and Pitt isn't giving enough effort.

  31. The upperclassmen on this team don't have it. Juniors and seniors carried past Pitt teams. This current group is so freaking soft. Nobody wants to rebound or sacrifice for a W. Remember Krauser losing two teeth in a win over Notre Dame in 2005? That's not happening with this crop of juniors or seniors.

    1. I don't know if it is a player issue.... or a coaching issue (style of play).

I think the talent is there... so until someone tells me otherwise, I believe it's a coaching issue. Dixon is hellbent in not changing how he wants his team to play and doesn't adjust to the changing landscape of college basketball.
It appears the players are rebelling. More transfers than normal. Woodall even spoke about it.. etc.
The Georgetown game was an anomoly.
8 wins in Big East will be tough to get and not enough to get to NCAA.

This team is mediocre at best right now and replacing Adams with the guard from North Carolina and the forward originally from McKeesport ain't gonna cut it.
I worry we missed our window of opportunity when we had Blair, fields and young.

Nothing against Clairton, but I don't recall any Clairton player in the past 10 years that made an impact at D-1. Same with Gateway.
I was surprised to read a report of Boyd at the underarmour game that he was "average"... but the report did say there is talent in Boyd to build on.
In my opinion, that is due to Single A wpial powderpuff football even though Clairton 7v7 have done well. So I'm sceptical on Howard and Webb.

    2. For the life of me I can't figure out why Mike Farrell is considered an expert at talent evaluation or why anybody would listen to what he says. He was just some guy that was running a little recruiting site when Rivals started and Rivals needed to hire somebody. He's literally just some guy. I've talked to college coaches about these types of guys and they laugh at him.

As for the 3 Clairton players they have size, speed, and athleticism and that translates to any level.

    4. I meant the same as not highly recruited athlete types.

I can't see how the school means anything. Each kid has different genes, work ethic, attitude etc. You can't correlate 2 kids from years apart and lump them together. That makes no sense. Just because X kid # years ago didn't pan out means Y and Z will also not work out.

Justin King was terrible and he was from Gateway. That is why he is in the NFL. Not a good post from JoeD. The premise is flawed. Don't recruit anyone from a high school that hasn't produced NFL talent, because history is the best predictor of future success.

  38. Mike Farrell, national recruiting analyst for Rivals.com, said (Paul) Chryst is following all of the proper procedures.

“They are targeting positions of need,” Farrell said last week on TribLive Radio. “But they are also trying to find guys who are being overlooked by other programs. They can sneak in and turn out to be great players. He is the guy to do that. He has a great eye for talent.”

    So there.

    2. This class isn't as great as many fans want to believe it is but there are a few elite players and some others with some very nice upside. The rest give much needed numbers. If Chryst always recruits like this he may be an 8 win coach in the near future but the next recruiting class will give us a good idea if he can do better than that. Bottom line, this year was mostly for depth, next year is for more elite talent.

    1. Honestly, I have no idea why they have to go to Hawaii to get a kid that has offers from Washington State and UMass. They're desperate to have Breckterfield bring somebody in.

      Delete
    2. Bringing someone in from Hawaii is a waste.
The kid is unranked and another "under the radar" kid.
Even if they land him, I can see him gone in a year or 2 because he wants to be on the west coast. That would be a waste as someone else could have been developed instead.
Hawaii is a 11 hour plane trip if non-stop from Pittsburgh. Florida is less than 3hr plane trip.
Pitt has a better chance keeping a Florida kid than a CA or TX kid let alone HA.

Beckerfield was a bad hire. Pitt should ONLY be recruiting those on east coast and within the ACC territory perse.

    3. Mike Washington of Aliquippa (and now plays for the Pittsburgh Power) went to Hawaii and was a starting WR under June Jones. So, not necessarily a waste, but I don't understand it, unless you want a couple of big, tough Kemoeatu types

That being said if Kenton Gibbs doesn't commit to us why not put a flyer out on this kid and let Ionke have a chance. Jeremiah has got the size that's for sure.

  40. James Robinson hasn't been a difference maker in the real games.

Chris did you overrate him or has he underperformed?

    1. In his four Big East games, he's averaging 7.0 ppg and has a 15-4 assist to turnover ratio. That's not too bad where I come from. His shooting hasn't been good lately but that's because he's pressing to score since others won't. When everybody does there job, which they haven't been doing much lately, Robinson will be great.

  41. Here's an update that I don't think made either the Post Gazette or the Trib.

    --------

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pitt football players Ray Graham, Lafayette Pitts and Devin Street have cut a deal to reduce misdemeanor assault and conspiracy charges to disorderly conduct counts.

The players were charged in November after police say they surrounded another student on a sidewalk near the campus before one of the players punched the man in the head.

The man told police he didn't want to press charges but wanted to ensure the players didn't harass others.

The three players were scheduled for a preliminary hearing Wednesday. But Graham's attorney, Mark Fiorilli says a deal was struck to have their charges reduced to disorderly conduct — a charge similar to a traffic ticket that carries up to a $300 fine.

The players must complete community service by April 15 for that to happen.

  42. I see Jones-Smith is announcing tomorrow afternoon. What are Pitt's chances at landing him (assuming we still want him)?

    1. Pitt wants him a lot and the odds are very good that they will get him.

  43. Maybe they need recruits in order to get DC!! Sounds right, do things backwards has been working for Pitt!! Get the recruits in, then have that has your enticement to get a co-ordinator.

I'm sorry, unless this person is in the NFL I just don't get it!!! This hire should have been done weeks ago!!

  44. Press conference for a two star player? - that's gotta be a first.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Look at his offers, not his stars. Scout and Rivals only rank guys if they have their film. If no film, automatically 2 stars.

This is why guys like Tony Harper and Zach Challingsworth have recently been bumped from 2 stars to 3.

    2. Now that's funny....
      pressor for 2star... lol
Just another "under the radar" player.
      Anyway, Oline needs bodies... literally.

  45. ZM, Depends where you look regarding the * rating. But, he has offers from NC St, Virginia, Wisconsin, Arizona, Michigan and ESPN had Oklahoma as an offer as well. That's not the typical MAC school lineup we're used to seeing.

Chris, any chance we get both Kemp and Veii or is it one or the other, assuming we get one? You would think that if either were real high on Pitt, that one would be making up their mind so to not miss out on a scholie.

  46. I saw his offers.

I guess my point is that for a kid to have a press conference to announce where he's going to school is a little crazy to begin with and shows that things just aren't in balance.

Ok, give him 3 stars - 4 for that matter - there's plenty of kids who have 4 stars that don't have press conferences to announce where they're going to school.... I mean play football.

I just hope that if he DOES choose Pitt that he's as good as he thinks he is.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Joe D you think anyone expexts Pitt to be a 9-10 win program year in and year out? That's crazy talk. It's not the 70's man. The glory years are over. If we can be a competitive 8 win team in the ACC with the occasional run at the conference championship once every 4-5 years I would be THRILLED. You're smoking crack if you think Pitt is going to consistently dominate like Florida State, Clemson or Virginia Tech.

Get off the drugs and get with the program.

    1. I think Pitt should be a Top 25 team... year in and year out. Otherwise, the HC and assistants are being paid tooooo much.
Also, 8 win minimum in regular season.

Now in order to get there... need to improve recruiting.
I believe success in college football is 2/3 recruiting/players and 1/3 coaching.

    2. Fair assessment. I think Chryst should be given four years to do it though - given the scope of the housecleaning he has to do. If I'm the AD (which I'm not) I give him 6-6 and 7-5 until 2016.

    3. Pitt man, isn't that what Wanny did?

      Delete
    4. 1. 6-6 or 7-5 with no arrests

      2. Wanny did it in the Big East

      3. I didn't fire Wanny

  48. Did the rumors start of Dixon to USC yet?

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm not ready to get rid of Dixon, but I wouldn't be heartbroken if indeed Dixon did go to USC. I've grown tired of him never recruiting shooters, his stagnant man offense, his even worse zone offense, and him not changing his philosophies. i.e., play more zone defense, press every so often to break rhythm.

  50. Chris,
The name Greg Jackson of the 49'ers is being bantered around as DC for Pitt. May make sense since he coached at Wisky with Chryst.

    Is this a budget hire?
Given the choice of Randy Shannon or Greg Jackson.... knowing you can land Randy Shannon for $350K. Who would you land?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Jackson is about the fifth name that fans are throwing out there as if it's fact, but nobody really knows who Chryst is considering. As for Shannon, I'd take him over every name I've heard rumored.

      Delete
    2. Shannon is already making over 300k as a position coach, I don't see him coming here. 350k wouldn't get it done.

      Delete
    3. In my opinion,
      Shannon is a no-brainer...
      He has DC experience...
Grew up in Miami, played at Miami, coached at Miami, all but 2yrs of his life/career are in Miami...
so from a recruiting perspective he can bring Florida recruits to Pitt.

I feel we may get a budget hire...
the defensive position coaches have what... 5 years of college coaching experience from the 3 of them combined? Bringing in an DC without DC experience will be a mistake. Since Pitt has an inexperience OC and Chryst spending most of his time on offense, he needs an experience DC.

    4. If ECU can hire Shannon as a DC, then Pitt has no excuse, and ECU interviewed him.

      Delete
    5. I will go nutso on Chryst if Shannon gets hired as DC somewhere for under $400k..
such as East Carolina!! C'mon man.

I understand Pitt inability to compete with SEC salaries whereby DC is 500k to 1million.
Shannon is the highest paid position coach at Arkansas for $315k. I think someone can land him for 350-400k. Shannon is worth it just from the recruiting aspect.

  51. Shannon would be a perfect hire. I just want to hire SOMEONE.

  52. Wow, from what I get from u guys, Pitt AD is cheap or just not willing to pay more into the fb team. Therefor they strive for mediocrity and should be happy because SP achieved his goal a long time ago. I personally would suggest that SP salary be cut to ZERO and see how he likes it. We have a carousel of coaches but no the AD must stay. I would rather be mediocre without ahole SP than with him.

  53. Stevie P pulls down what $750 K per year? If I made that kind of cash I would be smiling too!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Agree with all that if we end up with a DC that is a non NFL guy and a last minute budget hire, I will be pissed. Why would Chyrst who already knows we think he is passive in his approach to everything, not make getting a solid DC a priority for now. At least tell us you have a search going, something....wtf. Hey Doke, I am not on the Tom Bradley bandwagon but if Larry Johnson Sr. still has a job, why can't Bradley get hired? One would have to think that Johnson knew what Bradley knew all those years.
