Tyler Boyd chooses the Panthers

It's been expected for awhile now, but citing a desire to help his home school, Clairton superstar wide receiver Tyler Boyd chose the Panthers over his two other finalists, West Virginia and Michigan State.  The 6'1' 170 Boyd needs to get more strength but he's an excellent prospect with great speed and quickness.  He also is an excellent return man.  I expect him to play extensively at both positions as a true freshman.

  1. Welcome to Pitt Tyler!!!

Congratulations to Coach Chryst and Coach Engram for landing an elite recruit, especially one from the WPIAL. Job well done.

  2. No Pitt/Rutgers article?

With the crap OOC schedule 10-8 is needed. They won't get it. That makes 2014 a big year. Miss again and he may be gone.

  3. I've heard he is also taking a visit to Tennessee and MSU. If he is truly committed he wouldn't have those visits. Chris why is he going on those visits?

All around type of player with ability to do great things.
    I agree, Welcome.

  5. Not trying to be negative or cynical here but can someone please tell me if there have been any recent above average divison 1 players from Clariton area during their long winning streak?
I'm just trying to figure out if we have a potential impact player here or just another cam Sadler. Remember he was a four star player coming out of gateway...

  7. ALLLL-RIGHT! Finally something positive for today, especially after watching RU shoot out their butts and watching a "slow" Panther football team vs Ole Miss!

  8. Let's hope he signs the LOI in a month...
    But great news.
There was a top wpial recruit a few years ago that signed an LOI to a college (forget who it was) and he never visited the college. I think it was a kid from Mckeesport...

    1. Yea, I remember that! He went to Texas Tech, but I think that he is now is at Cal of PA! Wasn't his name Simmons from Mck? What ever happened to the kid from Clairton that was recruited by Wannstadt? Didn't he also end up at TT?

    2. Delvin Simmons and Branden Jackson from McKeesport went to Texas Tech and are still there.

Desimon Green from Clairton also committed to TT and is currently at Cal. Pa.

All 3 were recruited by a Robert Prunty.

    3. It was Simmons who initially selected UNC without visiting...
then change in coaches... he got out of the LOI... and signed with Texas Tech.

  17. Boyd is crazy for choosing Pitt. I expect him to reconsider before signing day. Why would anyone want to come to this pathetic program. The defense is inconsistent at best. The offense is just so predictable that any DC would be excited to game plan. The ACC will show how inept this program really is. Another losing season next year? Sad to see this once proud and revered program constantly underacheive

    1. Good to see Nitters come here and not figure out how to enter an ID....

      1. As for why Boyd chose Pitt:
      a. Maybe he wanted to play close to him
      b. Play with some of his teammates
      c. Be part of the reason Pitt turns it around

      2. Quick, after Florida State and Clemson, whom would you probably rate as the #3 program in the ACC?
      Probably Virginia Tech.
What happened when Pitt played Virginia Tech?
Pitt can defnitiely be competitive in the Coastal division next year.

      3. Regarding an earlier topic, the play calling didn't bother me much. Game was over when Ole Miss got up 14-0; tino never overcame a deficit larger than 7 points in his career. And the bad OL play wasn't going to help.
Actually agree with Joe D in that Bennett or someone else should have gotten a few carries.

  22. The bowl game today was especially troubling. Seemed like our offense was so predictable. This team reminds me of the Wanny teams. Can 't help to think that we went through all this coaching turmoil and ended up back to where we started.

  23. IF Dixon were to leave, Pederson leaving would probably be the catalyst. For those wanting Sean Miller - he's not going to leave Arizona for Pitt. It's not even worth entertaining the thought no matter how great it would be.

The name to keep an eye on would be Orlando Antigua. He's been an assistant for about a decade now and has been mentored by Howland, Dixon and Calipari. He's Pitt thru and thru and is a great recruiter.

I've been a huge supporter of Dixon, and I still am, but I'm starting to feel like he needs a change of scenery. He's been at Pitt since the 90's and he's obviously in a bit of a rut. This team has more talent than any team besides the Blair-Fields-Young trio but are still having the same on court chemistry issues that plagued last years team.

He hasn't forgotten how to coach but things have obviously begun to stagnate. I hate saying that because he's done more for Pitt athletics than anyone in recent memory but it may be time to move on and grow as coach.

If he doesn't leave, he should consider blowing up his coaching staff and starting fresh.

    1. Dixon isn't going anywhere unless he wants to go. As for Miller he does want to coach at Pitt and he is not happy at Arizona. I don't know if Pitt would pay enough for him, though. But it's all a moot point anyway.

      Delete
    2. Dokish - that was really my point. Dixon is not leaving but I'm sure he would consider his options if Pederson left. I'm unaware of Miller not being happy but I haven't really followed him since he's been Arizona. If he does want to coach at Pitt, I'm sure both sides could make it happen at some point. At the end of the day, I agree with you that Dixon's not going anywhere. If he's going to stay though, it may not be a bad idea to blow up the staff.

  26. Wow, Marrone to the Bills is a dagger for Syracuse. My first thought was maybe we can pick up a few of their recruits since they sometimes land some eastern PA guys. I looked at their current commit list and it is way worse than ours. For those of you ripping our recruiting class, I'll say that there are a lot worse classes out there....and Syracuse had seemed to maybe be turning the corner the second half of this year and with the smashing of WVU in the bowl game. But that momentum surely hadn't helped with recruiting this year.

  27. I read this board and scout/rivals all the time but rarely post. I live in Atlanta and made my 3rd consecutive trip to historic legion field. Tino is not a playmaker and never was. Most of the qbs that were in the division 2 and 3 playoffs had more skill. I cannot believe he started 39 or so games. It shows how bad our qb recruiting has been. In college to be very successful in running the prostyle you must have dominating lines and receivers that can get open. I noticed yesterday a lot of the times we only had 2 options for Tino to throw to and not much time. We will not succeed without great line play. Ole Miss had at least 5 options to go to on every play. I think the most troubling part of this game and the Uconn game was the lack of the hurry up offense. Against Uconn we started with 12 mins left in the game and almost came back. We should have done it the entire 2nd half. Yesterday with 12 mins left and down by 21 we are huddling on every play. We even huddled after 5 minute tv timeouts. Why not call a few plays in a row and hurry up. I dont get it. You are down by 3 scores in the 4th and huddling. That is all coaching right there. On the bright side... We will never watch Tino the anti playmaker who never had a win when trailing at the half in his career. I think we will be a lot better next year. We need to get a gamebreaker at runningback with some speed though to go along with Shell...

  29. Paul Chryst ain't no dummy. He has known for a long time that Tino couldn't carry the team to consistent victories. He also knows that the talent surrounding Tino isn't good enough to elevate the team to consistent victories, in spite of Tino.

I do agree that we will see 5-8 more players leaving the program. This should only be viewed as a positive. Chryst has done his diligence and has gone through the evaluative process with the roster. Support him properly and in a couple of years, the turnaround happens.

Has anyone noticed that Texas Agricultural and Mechanical received 34 verbals already. Could Pitt get that many with defections in play or do they wait until next year and sign a boat load. Louisville did this and filled their roster with a bunch of florida prospects. Interesting strategies from mediocre programs that used the ncaa rules to their respective benefit. Watch them go now!

  33. I couldn't agree more. It would be a serious loss, I really thought that Bennett's efforts through Spring, his spot play this season, and the potential for a bigger role in 2013, was a factor in the loss of Corey Clement.

With Ray Graham not playing that day, and no word of injury or disciplinary issues, I thought we'd get a mix of Shell & Bennett. This sends up a flag.

    1. Isaac Bennett was at the game, but did not have his helmet with him on the sidelines. My guess is that he was <100% and would have only went in as an emergency. He has been on the kickoff team all year, and he wasn't on that unit on Saturday.

If he was going to transfer or leave, he would not have made the trip to Birmingham (like Ryles, Frimpong, C.Davis, Carrozoni, Ricketts, stc..)

They got 3 or 4 gift wins this year but their luck finally ran out. If he can recruit and coach and has some youth give him a shot. I'd prefer him over Purdue's Dc they interviewed already.

  45. There’s been some talk that Chryst is considering naming Notre Dame’s Kerry Cooks as his new Defensive Coordinator.

After last night, that is not a hire that anyone should get excited about.

Alabama put a beat down on Notre Dame and contrary to how it looked, it had little to do with size and far more to do with scheme and execution… and Notre Dame’s cornerbacks who Cooks oversees found themselves totally exposed.

If you look at the size comparisons between Notre Dame and Alabama, you’ll find them pretty comparable. In fact, when Alabama had the ball, Notre Dame had the slight advantage.

Alabama OL (6’5, 314.2) vs. Notre Dame OL (6’4, 304.4)

Alabama DL (6’4, 299.3) vs. Notre Dame DL (6’4, 311.7

Alabama LB (6’3, 246.4) vs. Notre Dame LB (6’2, 247.5)

Rather than size, the difference was really scheme and execution which of course reflects talent.

    Passing… McCarron 9.4 YPA… Golson 7.5

    Rushing… Alabama 5.9 YPA… Notre Dame 1.7

Yes, Bama runningbacks Lacy and Yeldon were factors. But Alabama also threw the ball to eight different receivers. And specific to Cooks, Bama’s top three receivers averaged 19.8 yards a catch with Cooper catching 6 for 105.

Bottom Line… I have my fingers crossed that Chryst has a better name than Cooks to name as DC.

Too much riding to entrust Pitt’s defensive future to someone who was part of a Notre Dame coaching staff that failed to put their players in a position to compete in the biggest game of their careers.

    1. If careers were based on one game, Tino would have won the Heisman last year when he threw for over 400 yds vs UCONN.

      Delete
  46. To blame the passing yards on Cooks is just dumb. The difference in that game was the Alabama OL destroying the front 7 of ND. The Bama backs weren't getting touched until 5 yards downfield and there was no pressure on McCarron. No secondary in the world is going to do well if the opposing team in running rampant and there is no pressure on the QB.

Cooks would be a logical choice. ND was 11th in passing efficiency in the nation, and gave up about 195 ypg. So if you're going with stats, use the whole season as a barometer.

Chris said this would be a good get and he's a lot more in tune with this stuff than any of us.

    ReplyDelete

  47. How about this. Missed Tackles. Missed Coverage.

Yes, Te'o was exposed again in the middle. No surprise to Pitt fans. And Notre Dame did try to cover by bringing up its safety Motta.

But the defense came up with nothin' to counter what Bama brought. Biggest factor... excellent playcalling by Bama OC kept ND totally off balance.

Keep in mind that Cooks is Co-Defensive Coordinator not just cornerbacks.

If Cooks gets the job, don't complain later if he disappoints.
