Shai McKenzie very high on the Panthers

I just talked to elite running back Shai McKenzie of Washington HS in Washington, PA, and he tells me that Pitt is recruiting him very hard and that he really loves that they are.  I can't get into specifics because he doesn't really want to burn any bridges, but the Panthers are positioned very  well with him now.  McKenzie is currently on a visit to Ohio State but he says nobody compares to Pitt right now.

While it's still early, and things can always change, it's better to be ahead in the race than having to come from behind.  The Panthers really need an heir apparent to Rushel Shell, who even though he's only a sophomore, is a father of twins, meaning if he has any chance at all to leave early for the NFL, he will almost assuredly take it.  The 5'11" 210 pound McKenzie is one of the best running back recruits in the country and would make a great addition to the program.

    1. The staff is pretty busy right now with the season. That's why I don't have much info about it. They haven't hit the road hard for a few weeks.

    2. I watched the Chester v NuemanG game on ESPN last night... 3 college coaches were at the game.. Villinova, Temple, Lasalle.

  2. I'm glad to read that Pitt is recruting McKenzie hard, or anybody else hard for that matter.

As much as I'd like PC's preferred strategy to "just offer" and "we don't sell" to work, I don't think it does. Not unless the kid is the son of an alumni, or has no other offers. Or maybe unless he's a kid living in rural Nebraska and the Cornhuskers "just offer."

I don't sell cars, but if I did (seems to me) it would be great if your dealership just opened their doors and had customers fight for the right to buy your cars. Unfortunately, few things in life succeed with that little effort, and CFB recruiting at the higher levels certainly isn't one of them.

It shows the staff "gets it." Very good sign...

    2. Chris, I hope you can clear up something that I've always wondered about.

Every year after LOI day, Scout & other sites still list a few guys -- some fairly highly rated -- that Pitt has offered scholarships who apparently didn't sign LOIs with anyone.

Is Pitt still after them, or were offers pulled after LOI day?? Does the fact that they didn't sign with anyone mean they're still thinking? Do they have grades issues?

    3. Some offers are in name only. As for why they haven't signed anywhere yet it could be for various reasons. Sometimes by the end the kid has no worthy offers.

    4. LOL...
Imma is correct though... he quoted Chryst from his 1st pressor.
But, Chryst has improved... perhaps a little too late for 2013 but he has improved. Even his pressor on the 2013 class he stated that lots of time and effort went into recruiting.
He didn't have a Junior Day last year... this year he was the first Major college in the region to host one. Being first to offer.... first for Junior Day matters in my opinion.

However, the recruiting rules are changing. Will Chryst hand the reins to a non-coach Recruiting Director? It is permitted starting in August. How large will Pitts recruiting staff be? etc.
He is starting to get it.

    5. Hasn't this criticism of Chryst been debated to death here? Not saying it may not have some merit, but the fact is he inherited a very bad situation and put together a decent class this year. As Chris points out, next year is key, and it is fair to judge him on that. But, I don't recall Chryst saying he doesn't work hard at recruiting. His personality just lends itself to being honest and up front. That works well with some, not so well with others. In time, with success on the field (hopefully), it will work even better. But, he should not be something he's not. I respect that approach. W's & L's will be the final determinator. If he can win, he'll get recruits.

  3. it seems like pitts position with mckenzie was largely helped by the junior day. Apparently a lot of top recruits from the likes of NJ and OH had a great time too

  4. Chryst is a smart guy. Campus lifestyle is a huge competitive advantage for Pitt. Who wouldn't want to spend their offseason going to games in one of the best basketball environments in the country. (When they're not working out...)

  5. From a journalistic integrity point of view and ethical standpoint, why would you, as a Pitt blogger, agree to interview a recruit about Pitt while he was visiting another school?

    1. He was already home. It wasn't an interview per se. He was talking to me about recruiting in general. And lastly, there would be nothing unethical at all if I did interview him. People do that all the time and nobody cares.

  6. I like the fact that pitt is leading for mckenzie as of now. Who in your opinion will be pitts 1st verbal for 2014 ?

      Chandler Kincade.

  7. It greatly helps that McKenzie's head coach is Mike Bosnic, a former Panther lineman. I saw him accompanying Shai at Pitt's junior day / Syracuse basketball game.

  8. Its like we have been on a self imposed probation 25 out of 23 years if he doesn't land a top 20 class this year and atleast 8 or 9 wins just more of what if scenario and Pederson manipulating the rank to keep his job. 9-3 , 10-3 ,8-5 then a top10 recruiting class reward fired result debacle of a program

  9. Life as a Pitt fan is life living a self imposed probation sentence, Chryst needs to deliver big this year in recruiting or its just more 6-6 7-5 diet, and Pederson will be manipulating the board to save his ass, to think we paid off one death sentence Walt Harris gets us to BCS game he gets tossed after getting program on track, we listen to every excuse that Wanny needed to rebuild, again payoff another death sentence while Pederson was working on seeing Nebraska back 10 years, Wanny last 3 years underachieved but still seemed light years ahead of where program is now then to 10 class and he got let go now excuse time again, I love Pitt but if I had a child ready to decide, it wouldn't be in the script its just to much what if, problem Pederson needs to go
