Panthers land a lineman

The Panthers got their first verbal commitment of the recruiting season with 6'4" 290 pound offensive guard/center Connor Hayes of Traverse City West HS in Traverse City, MI.  Hayes has a reputation for being a tough, nasty offensive lineman, while also having good feet.  Other offers came from Indiana, Syracuse, Duke, Central Michigan, Western Michigan, Bowling Green, and Toledo.  Michigan and Michigan State were also keeping tabs on him.

  1. He will be gone as soon as he gets a Big 10 offer most likely.

  2. After taking 5 in the last class, how many O-line recruits do you see Chryst bringing in this time? You have to think there is a place reserved for both Bookser and Grimm. Would he stop at 3, or keeping adding if the talent warrants it?

    1. I'll pass on Bookser.... The April Fools joke was in bad taste. It turned me off. It prank smells of a big ego. Frankly, I've had enough of WPIAL kids with egos. I think the staff needs to tread cautionsly with the locals. If the kids want to be at Pitt, work hard and do what it takes to win, then I want them.

      Delete
    2. I agree with his ego. I say we go after more kids from Florida. Instead of them going to Louisville or Florida INT they should come to Pitt.

      Delete
  3. I like the sounds of this kid. Before the "his offer list sucks" comments start, let's not forget that this years #1 overall pick in the NFL draft was a 2star recruit who played at Central Michigan.

    1. Well said. What a concept....reality.

    2. His coach said he's the most physical lineman he's ever had. That's saying a lot since he also coached current Oregon starter Jake Fisher who many are saying is a likely first round pick next year.

  4. Again, when Chryst and Pitt "surprise" in the fall... Connor Hayes will find himself having plenty of company come 2014.

I suspect Chryst will take 20, anticipating a few departures.

    1. On April 1, Bookser tweeted he committed to Pitt.
      Everyone retweeted, rivals, etc.
      Then he said, April Fools.
What do you expect from Mt. Lebo with his former HC on Pitt staff! I consider that disrespectful and a slap on the face.

    2. To me, that was a sign of arrogance and ego. I may be wrong, but I've seen enough of some of these WPIAL players lately that tells me to be skeptical. Not all but some. Donald, Holtz, Shanahan have been terrific for the Pitt program

  6. sounds like a good pick up. i dont want to hear the offer list thing for 2 reasons. 1, he has a decent offer list (other high major offers) and 2, its still only april. there are still a ton offers to be handed out by schools

    1. what took so long.
I don't understand. The kid must have visited Pitt a dozen times over the past year... the coaches saw him play at heinz wpial finals as well as hershey. And Pitt needs Dlineman!! Seems he got jerked around.
Pitt should have been first to offer... not Terry Smith of Temple!
It was a no-brainer to me.

    2. Your pride is talking. Fields has a Pitt offer. End of story, stay tuned.

  8. Could be grades are an issue. Maybe offer was dependent on him cleaning up his grades. Don't know but it could be a reason

    1. Definitely not grades with Fields very intelligent kid. Works hard in the class room.

  9. consistent response Joe.....not! Why didn't you pound the coaching staff for offering a kid who only had an offer from the likes of temple. Stay consistent or apologize for your lack of conviction. Consistently inconsistent.

I likr a new recruit any time a coach says they are nasty! Hopefully, the nasty streak stays and he doesn't go soft. Four OL this year in my opinion. Let's get another one.

    Joe, you need to transfer.

    1. Thats a dumb statement.
Fields is, In my opinion, one of the top 10 recruits out of wpial. All-State, etc. It was a no-brainer in my opinion... not to mention the success of Quip players at Pitt... and if they want to get Dravon Henry!!
Fields grandmother was my 6th grade teacher. Awesome person and teacher and strict!
If Pitt want's to land top recruits out of wpial, they need to be first to offer. If he was good enough to offer him now, why didn't they offer him 4 months ago?

But hey, go bring in 10 players from Clairton that are 5'10" and weigh 165# and played A ball. or Sto-rox and see how they do in ACC.

      Delete
    2. Maybe they don't think he's as good as you do.

      Delete
    3. If they offered him now...
      why not 4 months ago.
and its not how good I think he is... 1st team all state, fab 22 by PG/Trib... etc.
      He is from wpial...
not florida. If it were some out of state player, I can understand it would take more time perse. Not a local person.
      Sorry, no excuse for that.

      Delete
    4. They offered now and not before because they're moving further down their list. It's not rocket science. He's not nearly as good as you think he is. If Pitt didn't offer him, but Ohio State and Michigan did, then that's one thing, but Pitt is his best offer right now. What does tell you?

      Delete
    5. It tells me that even though the Quips continue to produce a ton of talented kids, maybe not every single one is automatically a stud talent even if he and his grandmother are wonderful people. Maybe he has grown on Pitt now, but other programs have yet to catch up on that.

      Delete
    6. "But hey, go bring in 10 players from Clairton that are 5'10" and weigh 165# and played A ball."

Yeah, because there's such a HUGE difference between A & AA football. At least the Clairton kids won their state title games...

    1. To quote Barkley.
He lost didn't he. Imagine if he had won in NCAA.

      Delete
    2. We have weak assistants on both the basketball and football side of things. It will continue to hold back both programs.

      Delete
    3. If the assistants are weak, that is on the head coach. He is the guy responsible for hiring them, and getting rid of them if they are not delivering in terms of recruiting and/or developing players. If he is losing recruits, he is also to blame. Head coaches close deals, and recruits don't generally choose a school because they like the assistant who recruited them but don't also like the head coach. So, if recruiting is trending downward, that is on Jamie. If the assistants are bad, he needs to find new ones. It is all his responsibility.

Something is clearly lacking. I would agree, as many have mentioned, it is because of the lack of appeal of Jamie's style of play. The NCAA is said to be in the process of enacting changes designed to move away from the Pitt style of play and toward a more open, athletic, offensive game. Jamie needs to change with the times. Period.

      Delete
    4. No. It's also the fault of the administration who won't pay assistants enough to attract the best candidiates.

      Delete
    5. You have to be kidding. Jamie was one of the higher paid coaches in the Big East. There are plenty of young, up and coming coaches who are dying to get into big-time programs, and there are always seasoned assistant coaches looking to move from mid-major programs to top level ones like Pitt. If Jamie doesn't have good enough assistants, it is Jamie's fault. If you screw up badly at work and your department is falling apart, do you get to tell your boss that it is his fault for not paying more money to your assistants, or is it your fault for not hiring the right people and developing them properly? Assistant coaches that repeatedly fail are the fault of the head coach. Letting him off the hook is silly.

  12. Joe:
I agree. How freakin long did it take Paul Chryst to decide on a defensive coordinator, and why has the Pittsburgh media not done any investigation into how someone who appears to be misfit got the position? Do we know how much Chryst was allotted to pay for a DC?

Pitt has no problem hitting alums up for money. Some of us aren't going to be generous to Pitt athletics when we are kept in the dark pretty much all the time.

Chryst's focus has come into question many times over the past year and a half. He is quickly reactive to discipline issues and it's easy to see that Cornhole Pedie has him on a short lease in that area. He needs to show dynamic leadership in other areas as well.

I get the fact he is only starting his second year, he's supposedly an offensive genius, blah, blah, blah, and I support him.

But as you say, Joe, his mind is somewhere else, like he's waiting for somebody to make the first move...

  15. Oh its still early in the recruiting game meanwhile all the big pitt targets are coming off the board quickly. Chryst needs to get his head out of his ass and start recruiting real hard. Food for thought get rid of these non recruiting coaches and add Walt Harris & Tom Bradley to this clueless staff!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Enough with the Tom Bradley stuff already. No school wants him. Like all of the PSU coaches, he knew what was going on with his boss and he took a pass at telling anyone. Or, more likely, he was just told to keep his mouth shut. Regardless, although he may be a great coach, he is not getting a job at Pitt or anywhere else to coach D1 college football.

      Delete
    2. Also, doesn't Pitt already have an old guy or two on the football side? Walt Harris and Tom Bradley are both in their 60's. I'm all for experience and seasoning, but you need some young coaches. These guys are past their prime. And, besides, Bradley is "untouchable" and Harris was fired by Pitt awhile back.

      Delete
    3. Tom Bradley is not in his 60s. I think he's 54.

      Delete
    4. Ok, he's not yet 60. I must have forgotten that he was the youngster on the JoePa staff. He was born in 1956, so he has either turned 57 or will later this year. I didn't mean that he is too old to coach, by any means. It's just that he isn't young for coaching. You can have a guy or two like that, but not add both Harris (who is in his 60's) and Bradley (who is close and brings tons of baggage) to a staff. Clearly, having all of the old guys on the PSU staff at the end of the JoePa reign was holding them back in terms of recruiting. They didn't fall of the map, but were not the recruiting force they were years earlier.

  16. Coach Dixon can't recruiting and gets rewarded an extension. Steve p is dragging this university down. Im a die hard pitt fan and this is painful to watch one blunder after another. At least Nebraska figured that out before it was too late

  17. Looks like Eric Williams and Drew Carswell are officialling off the team. Wonder about the details that led to them getting the full boot and Mosley-Smith is still just "suspended". And Chapman??? He seemed like a quality kid - of course I thought the same of E Williams too.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. We need to get the full details on the Chapman thing, but it certainly sounds very serious. If that turns out to be the case, and he is dismissed, what a major screw-up this was on his part. He is the son of a coach, so he understands the discipline needed to lead a football team as a QB. Or, at least he should understand it. Not very bright to have such a great future laid out in front of you, so close you can almost taste it, and then you play the fool and p*ss it away. I hope it is not as serious as it seems.

    2. yea.. assaulting a girl while on break isnt a good start to a career... could be the end of it, realistically. of course, he is innocent until proven guilty

    3. Looks like Pitt will kick Chapman off the team.
If they can fire Haygood for same thing, then consider Chapman gone.

    4. Really disappointing regarding Chapman. He was made out to be a high character kid with all the intangibles of great leadership.

Regardless if the charges are dismissed... don't know how they can keep him in light of the Haywood fiasco.

    5. Don't leave out Steve Williams getting kicked off the team 6 months ago.

      Delete
    6. Still need the facts on the Chapman incident, and I'm not debating that he should be dropped if the charges are factual and stick. Pitt doesn't need players who abuse women, that's for sure. If this is anywhere near true, he needs to go immediately.

But, all of that aside, a coach being let go is not the same decision for a university as whether or not to dismiss a player. Players can get 2nd chances under certain situations. Coaches need to be setting examples and holding players accountable for their behavior. Plus, coaches are a bigger financial investment than one scholarship player.

Wouldn't he want to showcase his talents there against the best competition? Well, I guess you get seen everywhere - even playing for teams in conferences whose games are rarely on national TV, and when they are it is between the hours of 10 and midnight. He must feel his best shot at the pros in a short stint is at one of those programs. Seems an odd choice, though.

  27. Pitt football is slowly dying and for those who think chryst is the answer is sorely mistaken. Pitt football needs not only a good coach but a dynamic recruiter as well. Wisconsin did not want chryst for this specific reason. Some coordinators are meant to be just that and that's what chryst is. Rudolph is a jerk you dont take a recruits dad to the cafeteria for lunch (winovich) Steve pedersen needs to step in and force chryst to make changes to this staff asap (haering & breckterfield) . This will be the year that pitt loses almost all the local talent. (Ron.b)

  28. Paul chryst and his staff are glaring failures along with the athletic director. Recruiting is your bloodline and a blood sport you simply don't tell recruits that you want them to visit other schools. That's like telling the girl your dating that you want her to date other guys. That is sending a message that your really not interested. Franklin to Syracuse wow. I am officially anti Paul chryst at this point. There is nothing but negativity coming from this program for months now. With dravon Henry looking to go elsewhere. Pitt has nothing positive going on right now. Baggage or not Tom Bradley was the piece to the puzzle this staff desperately needed. With that said Penn St still has 2 holdover coaches and sanctions and are kicking our ass in recruiting. I see why Todd Graham got the hell out of Pittsburgh, this shit is a mess my friends (ron.b)
