Panthers strike out on Severe

The Panthers staff only got on Christ the King guard Jon Severe recently, and it proved to be too little too late as Severe chose to stay home and play at Fordham.

I know there will be Pitt fans who will make much more of this than it is, but it's not a huge deal- at least not yet.  Severe is potentially a good player, but he's not a program changer.  And like I've said before, he is a different kind of kid, one that doesn't just go for the best program, so it's not a surprise at all that he decided to stay with the hometown school that's been showing him love for years.

As for how much of a shot this is for Pitt, I look at it the same way as I look at the football program losing Troy Apke.  And that's that you can only keep score with recruiting when all is said and done.  If Pitt gets an equal or better player in that slot then it's not a big deal at all.  If they don't, then missing out would be considered a failure.

  1. My concern for Pitt BB recruiting... is not the Guard position.
we need 2 BIG's... with experience.

otherwise, 1st year in ACC is going to be tough to watch.
Pitt has no depth at 4 or 5.
Moore is not a 4. Artis is not a 4 in my opinion either.
Very possible that Zanna and Young start at 4/5.

  2. You never feel good when you lose one, but frankly I doubt Severe is as more but a sub at the ACC Level. We still need two bigs and a potential scorer. What is your read on Nard Freeman? Good enough? What;s up with Uchebo? Davis? Yacoubou ?

  3. Regarding Josh Davis, the Tulane transfer.
He spent 1 year at NCState... then to Tulane.
Can he transfer back into an ACC school due to ACC rules? NCState may be an exception since that is where he transferred out of.
    This is a strange one.

    1. Yes he can transfer to Pitt.

    2. Gonzaga and San Diego State have entered the equation for Davis. That is not good news for Dixon.

    3. If Uchebo wanted to be at Pitt, he'd have committed by now.

    4. Gonzaga has been in it from the beginning. I doubt that he will go out west unless maybe it's Arizona. And Uchebo may very well end up at Pitt. He just wants to look around, which is the smart thing to do.

  4. If Jamie does not get Uchebo, he will have missed out on a great opportunity to quickly replace Adams with a legit NBA prospect. Has Uchebo signed elsewhere, Chris? Is Pitt still in the mix?

    1. Let's face it. If Jamie doesn't get Uchebo or Davis, he needs to do some serious soul searching about everything. I'm reading that they are looking to enforce the rules more tightly to avoid all the physical play, and open things up in college. They are going squarely at the style of Pitt and similar programs, and Jamie has never shown an ability or willingness to adapt to a more wide open, offensive game. Now, he and his staff cannot seem to close the deal on any of these recruits still available when less big-time programs are there to compete with. He can continue to be stubborn and tell everyone how everything is wonderful. But, hopefully, behind the scenes, he is making meaningful changes to how he runs this program.

  5. Pitt needs a center or three. IMO, they should be focusing on that need above all else.

I happen to like Zanna. But if he's our only 5 (in fact at best a 4 masquerading as a 5), next year will be back to the CBI ... if we're lucky.

  6. Hey doke off topic of basketball how about the bs with steven bench from penn state taking advantage of a rule maybe if he can find the right college. He chose penn state after the sanctions came down and still can transfer and not sit out. What bs. He did not look like a bad qb either.

  7. Look, O'brien has precious few scolarships and is not going to waste one on a qb that is not as goo as his true freshman. Hence, cut the schollie and use t for the new class.

Speaking of schollie limits, has Pitt FB, ummmmm, released any players after the post spring practice iterviews?

  8. Saw somewhere that Uchebo will announce his decision today. Any truth to that rumor?

  9. Would be happy with either Uchebo or Freeman and saving one for Class of 2014. If Uchebo needs another year to rehab, then Freeman (or some other big) is a must. Getting another guard for 2013 doesn't solve the lack of bigs problem.

  10. Meant saving two if landed only one of Uchebo/Freeman--saving one if both landed.

  11. Who will be the first pick... Joekel or Fisher.
Joekel at Texas A&M/SEC or Fisher at Central Michigan/MAC.
Fisher has better measurables from the combine.

    1. I looked up their Rivals HS profile...
Joekel was a 4star... lots of offers from SEC schools and committed early.
      Fisher was a 2star... only 1 offer.
So, let the debate begin regarding stars... lol

  12. Regardless of when they showed interest, the loss of Sever reinforces the belief that kids really don't excited about the opportunity to play for Dixon.

We know his style of play is a turnoff. Could his personality also be a turnoff to some?

Does not bode well for the great expectations some have for the Pitt basketball becoming the kind of program fitting for the arena in which it is housed.

But, hey, this is nothing new. Just something that we see getting reinforced more and more over time.

Jamie gives credence to the adage "It is what it is."

    1. Dixon isn't an elite recruiter but losing Severe has nothing to do with him being a less than great recruiter.

      Delete
    2. If you take all of it in, you really have to scratch your head regarding Severe choosing Fordham over Pitt. God bless him, and he has every right to go where he wants. But, this is truly a different kid, as Chris has said. He is going to be playing for a weak program, with home games in a glorified gymnasium, attended by ... not many. I guess the things that 99.99% of the other kids look for in a program truly do not matter to him. Good luck to him, nonetheless. If he chose Fordham over Pitt, with them being such different experiences, I think it is fair to say he would not have been happy at Pitt.

  13. As for Pitt and the draft...

Have to believe that more than one NFL team has Ray Graham on their list starting in the fourth round.

I’ve seen enough running backs to know that a healthy Graham is better than the majority of backs eligible for this year’s draft.

Graham showed that with his performance in the East-West Shrine game.

His pass receiving skills and uncanny ability to get by the first tackler in the open field make him perfect as a situational back in the NFL.

The loss of Chris Rainey would seem to make the Steelers one of the teams who should be quick to dial Graham’s number come Saturday.

    1. He de-committed from Texas A&M not long ago (and Oklahoma State before that). Pitt recruited him in the past. He's a good player and he's from Charlotte so he may want to play back in the ACC. He would be a good pickup and would definitely see time at both the one and two this year if he signed.

    2. Dokes,
Why is Dixon spending anytime recruiting another guard..
when he sorely needs BIGS... at least 1 that projects as a true center.
He needs 2 BIGS... I'd even take 3 BIGS.
He can't even run a practice... if Zanna/Young are starters.
The practice team or 2nd team is Moore/Artis.. using 3's to play the 4/5 position. smh

I know... people may say Dixon will play small like Villinova... 1PF and 4 guards. Dixon doesn't know how to play small... that is not his system.

      Delete
    3. He will get two bigs, but they need a SG, too. There is obviously a hole there. You can recruit different positions at the same time, you know.

      Delete
  17. All the decommitting makes him appear flaky. On the other hand, his decommit from TA&M may be because he got over-recruited there. They signed a highly touted 6-8 JUCO 2G on April 18 (per their official site).

He does seem like a good one to land--if he can be signed.

I am much more concerned about landing a big or two--a much greater need, IMHO.

  18. Has anyone heard anything about women's hoops recruiting? As I would like all Pitt teams to do well I am hoping S. McConnell-Serio can land a couple of quality frontcourt players (posts who can score and wings that can shoot the 3-ball). The current team only has talent at the guard position. The silence has been deafening.

Stars don't matter. Some kids mature differently. Some work harder than others. If Shayne Hale worked as hard as Dan Mason, he would be getting drafted. To be elite, you need an elite mindset and that is where the Pitt players of the past 2-3 years have been lacking. Both basketball and football players have been mentally weak. Unfortunately in our case, the reputational brand is created by its leadership.

  20. Stories in both the Post Gazette and Trib Review today about Pitt's runningback situation. Clearly gives the impression that Chryst is uneasy with Bennett and Crockett.

Bennett is an absolute class act and Crockett gives you the impression of being a solid team player. Unfortunately, neither has shown the kind of ability that makes you think the running game won't be a problem.

At times Bennett looks good. But he lacks the ability to cut without losing speed. That is a problem. Crockett looks like a slasher but lacking in the speed and vision necessary for making big plays.

Both stories report Chryst making specific mention of James Conner. Looking pretty obvious that Chryst is counting on the 230 lb Conner to come in and make an impact. Also believe Tyler Boyd will get his chance to show what he can do carrying the football.

    2. They should be suspended for a year or kicked off the team.
Those who tested for drugs typically get 1 year suspension but in this case, the cops caught them. May need to kick them off the team.
If Chryst can suspend Hollins for 1 year and he was starting Olineman... and all signs were pointing to Shell was going to get a 1yr suspension...
then, Chryst will suspend these 3 backups for a year... minimum and perhaps kick them off the team.

I would applaud Chryst to kick them off the team!

  29. Great article in the trib today on joe del sardo. Seems like he is doing well. i just hope the kid can keep it together. I think if I was Paul Chryst I would get del sardo to come and speak to the team about his experiences.

Yes most of the kids will likely tune him out but if he can just get his message to sink into one kid it would be worth it. Only one or two kids from most pitt teams will ever play in the nfl so somehow these kids need to realize the importance of getting an education...

Incidentally I don't know del sardo personally but I did happen to play pick up basketball with him about five years ago at trees hall on the Pitt campus. He is little, but he is a heckuva an athlete. I think he would have been a fine college football player If he could have just kept it together...

It is of no minor import that these kids were living on the University “dime” while allegedly allowing a heroine dealer to turn their apartment into an on-campus drug depot.

A key question is whether the players’ bank accounts and/or credit card accounts show that they might have actually been getting some kick-back from their alleged drug dealer friend for making their apartment available?

Curious if the authorities are checking into this possibility or if it’s being completely overlooked?

I know they are involved with Frazier and Uchebo and Freeman, but I have yet to hear any names from 2014 class that they are in with and have a good chance of getting. If he can't land some big-time talent with those scholarships, this program could be in for a big decline over the next few seasons. I would say the next twelve months on the recruiting trail will determine the next five years of success for Pitt.

  39. If he finally has decided to transfer it just might be that he now knows Pitt may be about to bring in 2-3 JUCOs including 2 Bigs and he believes that means he wouldn't get any PT next season. Someone on Rivals stated he heard that Pitt expects to sign Freeman and either Uchebo or Marcus (Purdue Sr transfer) plus 6-4 JUCO 2G/PG Frazier.
