Panthers land Uchebo

As has been expected for awhile now, the Panthers have signed 6'11" center Joseph Uchebo, of Chipola JC in Marianna, FL.  Uchebo, a native of Nigeria, originally committed to North Carolina State out of high school, but when he realized that he was not going to be eligible he de-committed.  He was having an excellent freshman season at Chipola but a bad knee injury cost him the end of his first season, as well as his second season.  He now has three years to play three years.

National juco writer Brad Winton: "If healthy, Uchebo could end up being one of the best players at the next level from this JC class."

  1. Well, they missed out on a bunch of targets. But, maybe quality is better than quantity sometimes. This was the main target, as long as he is healthy. Maybe Jeter or someone else added late?

    1. Meaning, what? He won't play this coming season? I thought he was recovered. I would hope they got a chance to examine him before offering. Chris, do you know his health status?

    2. they examined his knee on his visit. he will be able to play this year but there is always the possibity of re-injury. he is supposed to be high risk high reward. risk because of his knee and reward because of his size and talent.

  3. Maybe Kane, too? With Uchebo as the main ingredient, it might not be too late to salvage a strong class as he could attract other talent. They still need to move into the 21st century in terms of playing style.

    1. Isn't Ali 7'0"? Why would he want to go to the same school that just signed a stud 6'11" guy with 3 years left? I'm not saying it wouldn't be good for Pitt. But, there are plenty of schools looking for a 7'0" guy to start. They could potentially both start for Pitt. It has happened before, with Bowie/Turpin and other combos. But, that is uncommon in college.

    2. He's more of a 4 for Pitt. He's about 6'10" or so, but he's VERY skinny.

  6. Must he sit out a year or can he play immediately. This should be a really interesting get.

  7. They not only landed a big man, they landed one who, by all accounts, can play. The reports on his knee are that he has recovered and is ready to play. So that's good news. The fact that he had 3 years of eligibility remaining is also very big. As athletic as Steven Adams was, he only stayed one year, so we never really got to how good he could be. Hopefully Joseph Uchebo can stay healthy and stick around for a few years. Big get, to sign probably the best remaining Juco big man out there.

  8. Chris, is Uchebo a better player than Adams? Does this make us top 25 team again?

    ReplyDelete

    1. My take is he may be more polished offensively at this point than Adams was last season, due to his age and experience level in the US vs Adams arriving in the US so late. But, from a defensive standpoint, it would be a stretch to think he could totally alter the opponent's inside the game the way Adams did consistently last year. Adams was one of the best defensive big men in the country last year, and would have probably been the best this season.

      Delete
    2. If he was healthy he could give Pitt a lot of Adams brought. He is better offensively potentially, and he's also a good defensive player, too. He has a ton of potential, but with big guys, especially injured ones, one has to temper their enthusiasm.

  9. Who started the rumor or stirring the pot of Sheldon Jeter transferring? Not only that, but stating Jeter in discussions with Pitt and Pitt is pursuing Jeter. Is that rivals looking for page views... Matt Steinbrink?
    Jeter/Vandy has not announced anything.
Pitt can't have any contact with Jeter while still under scholarship with Vandy. That would constitute tampering, etc. Pitt can't have contact until he is released from the scholarship by Vandy.

    1. Maybe it is just like the JJ Moore situation. As far as I keep hearing, JJ has not done anything official. But, his friends and others seem to be certain he is leaving. Maybe Jeter is telling people close to him that he has made up his mind, but just hasn't finalized the paperwork. Or, it could just be rumor mongering. I don't think there is any way Jamie is tampering. That's just silly to even suggest. He knows the rules and has a reputation for following them.

      Delete
    2. It's not a rumor. I know for a fact that Pitt wants Jeter and he is trying to transfer. I think he is also trying for a waiver so that he can play right away.

      Delete
    3. First he has to get released from Vandy before anything else. To my knowledge, that has not occurred.
If rumors are true, then it could constitute tampering which I don't think Dixon would do since Dixon blocked Haith of missouri from birch.
It may be jeter sending out smoke signals to gauge interest by Pitt in a roundabout way.

      Delete
    4. There's no tampering. Pitt hasn't even talked to him or expressed publicly that they want him.

      Delete
    5. People that have no connection to the program talking about it is not tampering. Dixon knows what he can and cannot do.

      Delete
    6. These waivers seemed to be next to impossible to receive just a few years ago, and now it seems guys are much more successful at receiving them. If Jeter just wants to transfer and not sit out a year, it doesn't seem like that is enough. If he really does want to come to Pitt (and I'm not saying he does), won't he need a legit hardship-type reason to be granted a waiver?

      Delete
    7. While I haven't confirmed it yet I've heard some talk that he may have an illness in the family.

      Delete
  10. Outside of health, the biggest question on Uchebo is whether or not he's a tough, aggressive player? Pitt didn't have much aggression or heart last year.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I wouldn't call him a monster in the paint like Blair but he's an aggressive rebounder. Much more aggressive than Adams.

      Delete
    2. So, maybe fair to say he's not the ridiculous athlete at close to 7' that Adams was. But, maybe more polished and more ready to mix it up in big-time college hoops than Adams was, Chris?

      Delete
    3. Oh if his knee is okay then he is an excellent athlete. I've seen him make nice no look passes and dribble between his legs. And he used to run like a deer.

I think physically Adams could be a phenomenal talent. He just didn't show a killer instinct. If he had that Uchebo or pretty much else couldn't touch him. But he didn't have that. But Uchebo has enough physical talent that if he's healthy he could be very good.

      Delete
  11. Chris, what's the situation with Uchebo's knee?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's a work in progress from what I can tell but that there's a possibility that it will be okay in the near future. Of course with big men their knees are often precarious, so it's always going to be a worry even if he gets a relative clean bill of health.

      Delete
  12. Coming out of high school ESPN had his rated as a 93 and was listed 83rd in their top 100 list. Knee injury or not, that's a pretty good get for Pitt at this stage in the game. Not trying to compare the two, but his situation sounds similar to Shady McCoy. After tearing his knee, most schools cooled off on Shady. Wanny was the only one who remained hard on him throughout the process. Hopefully Jamie has gone after Uchebo hard.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Jamie must have gone after him hard because he got him to commit to Pitt over a bunch of other programs. It didn't hurt that Pitt had no centers on its roster, which signaled immediate starter minutes for Uchebo. Now, he has to do his part and get healthy and back in shape. Pitt could really use a good break here. Maybe the tide is turning.

  15. Regarding Pitt football recruiting.
I don't get it... who is this kid from Shady Side? No offers except Pitt. I know... I know... he runs track and has ok speed but not fast enough for RB/CB (11.83 in 100m).
Is Pitt recruiting players for the ACC? Patriot League? or MAC? smh

Chryst and crew seemed to have turned it around... the light went on... from November till January... now it seems they resorted to old ways? They still don't have many offers out compared to other teams... translation... they are behind in recruiting already!!

    1. The amount of offers means little. But they do have a strange way of recruiting. They're either geniuses or fools because they seem to march to the beat of their own drum. Only time will tell which.

    2. Bottom line.... These Wisconsin coaches (Rudolph & Chryst)were successful with the type of kids they've recruited. Their recruiting rankings were consistantly in the 40's, yet the results were much better than Pitt. And please, don't tell me that they were not the head coaches at Wisconsin. Bielema is an idiot that benefited from his assistant coaches and Alvarez as a mentor. His move to Arkansas tells you all you need to know. Any Wisconsin fan will tell you that Chryst, along with Bostad were the brains of the staff. One last thing, take a look at the 4 / 5 star players from the WPIAL and how they have fared. Few have lived up to their hype. Saddler? Hale? Jacobsen? They best players in the program over the years have been three star players and less and non WPIAL players (Lewis, Romeus, Sheard, Stephens-Howling, Mustakas,)

    3. I hope Pitt coaches go to the Wpial track/field championship next week. Lots of football players with offers from Pitt competing.

      Anony 10:11am.
LOL... yes, many wpial recruits are over-rated, especially out of Gateway. Terry Smith did a great job marketing his players.
Please don't use the Wisky comparison because I can list a dozen schools that results on the field correlate to recruiting... yes, stars.
Of course, we are all entitled to our opinions. Let me ask, would you offer this kid out of Shadyside for RB/CB?? I can list at least a dozen better candidates in PA alone.

    6. Joe D,

We before Chryst got here, we were winning recruiting battles (Ave ranking in the high 20’s) but losing on the field. Can anyone dispute that? Do we want to continue down this road? Do we want to recruit 4 and 5 star local players who want to be pampered and treated like a star before they do anything on the field? And when they finally do get on the field they don’t live up to their local hype? Or worse yet get arrested and embarrass the university?

      Or…

Do we want to look for physically talented kids that are coachable, want to be at Pitt, want to work hard, stay focused, and want to be winners?

Yes there are dozens of schools whose recruiting rankings have a correlation to the results on the field. However, we can not CONSISTENTLY compete with Michigan, OSU and Alabama. We need to look at schools like Cincinnati, Boise State, TCU and other schools whose results are greater than their recruiting ranking.

The staff truly doesn’t care about rankings. They put that aside and trust their own instincts and eyes. They look for kids that will fit what they’re trying to do regardless of stars. They are very methodical in their approach. DW ran a pro-style offense, yet he never brought in the type of OL men needed to run the style. Chryst is bringing in road graters that will run the scheme no matter how many stars they have. Look at Gabe Roberts. He’s a two star player who’s battling for a starting job as a RS freshman! What did his offer sheet look like? We need to trust PC…

    7. Anony 11:29,
In my opinion, success in college sports is 2/3 recruiting and 1/3 coaching.
Albeit during the Wanny years, the coaching was the missing link.
I like players who put the work in... not premadonnas. I'm consistent on that. However, some you have take a risk on and hope it works out (ie. Shell).
Do you think Chryst is getting physically talented kids... I don't... but time will tell. The shadyside kid does not meet the criteria nor do several clairton kids as an example.
But please answer why 2015 Sterling Jenkins from Baldwin 6'8", 300# doesn't have an offer yet... but he has about 6 after attending a Rival camp in Montour last week. If you can answer that one because I'm scratching my head on it. Its a no brainer.

    8. Joe D,

You and some of the dudes on this board need to get a grip.

What does Pitt football have to sell to recruits right now? 30 years of underachievement? Instability? One BCS appearance? 100,000 fans attending games every week? Conference titles? Great fan base? A winning culture within the program?

What about the parents? What do you sell them? Kids being arrested at a record clip? Kids smoking weed?

Pitt is not a destination school for 4 & 5 star players unless you are local kid. Even then, you have to proceed with caution. Is the kid the result of overhyping by local coaches? Will the kid want to be pampered and treated differently because he feels he’s doing Pitt a big favor by signing with them in the first place?

Chryst has a lot to overcome to bring a winner to Pitt. It ain’t easy raising the dead. Under the circumstances, his approach to recruiting and discipline on and off the field is exactly what we need. The players he brings in must be physically talented, but also have the intangibles to help him change the culture within the program and produce a winner. Winning will also elevate the program.

Some of you want to continue to stay the course and trust scouts with websites (who have never coached at a high level) decide which players are superstars. And when a local kid decide to go elsewhere, then we should panic and scream the world is coming to an end. PC is different. That’s a good thing. I’ll trust Barry Alvarez’s recommendation over the administration any day of the week…

Yes, I think he is bringing in physically talented players. I'll bet you Weah will be a more productive and better pro prospect than Apke. As far as Jenkins is concerned, why hasn't PSU offered? Ohio State? Michigan? ND? You think he should be offered now because he's local.

      Delete
    9. Yeh, I think Jenkins should be offered... before he even attended rivals camp.. why.
He is 6'8", 300# and lives 25min from Pitt campus.
      That is a no-brainer.
If you can't land the top players from wpial... Pitt surely is not going to land top players outside PA.
I love and support Chryst discplining of players..
      but answer me this.
Why wasn't Chapman kicked off the team? Steve Williams was kicked off for the exact same thing. Why wasn't KK kicked off the team?

I say, go look at what Stoops is doing at Kentucky... clearly a basketball school with no history in football. Also look at Vandy... look at PSU in the face of sanctions doing a remarkable job recruiting.
I'm not giving Chryst a pass... sorry. He gets paid $2million/yr.

      Delete
    10. Joe D,

That is dumb. If recruiting results were measured by how much money you make, then DW should have received 3 million dollars a year. No my friend, he gets paid to win, not how many 4 star players he lands. What players he chooses is up to him. He's the expert, not you. Why is it so important that Pitt having to offer the local kid first? Is there a correlation between actually signing and who offers first? Ifhe's that great, why wasn't ND offered? Or OSU? Maybe, like Chryst he wants to see a little bit more before he offers. On the other hand, Pii offered the shadyside kid first and you're being critical. Your thought price makes no sense.

I don't know how many kids mention that... but it matters.
      Also, sales and marketing 101.

    12. Institutions aside - Nick Saban isn't winning national championships if he's at Kent State or Duke - college football is 100% coaching. But, part of being a college coach is being able to recruit the correct players (along with developing them and coaching/gameplanning on game day)

Joe D, according to his profile on Rivals, Sterling Jenkins does have a Pitt offer. Before I double checked that, I was going to ask how many offers does Pitt have out for the class of 2015. Keep in mind those players are in 10th grade; I can understand coaches having a policy of waiting before offering someone so young.

    15. Heh heh, yeah I figured... :)

I'll go ahead and re-ask the question, how many sophomores (Class of 2015) has Pitt offered so far?

      Delete
    16. First to offer matters to some kids. It is how Pitt deals with the kid before and while making the offer that matters most to a lot of them, though, IMO. I went through this last year with my daughter in another sport. I'm certaninly not trying to equate her college recruitment with the recruitment of big-time college football players by any means. But, if Jenkins was made to feel that he was a very big priority for Pitt by their coaches, but that they don't just offer everyone right away, maybe he respects their process and feels even better about it. Maybe he likes that they want to be sure, and that they don't follow the herd mentality. I agree with you, Joe D, that Pitt needs to be more aggressive early on with some of these kids, but it isn't an absolute in every case. We don't know what was said to him or why they offered when they did. He has an offer now.

I guess it just depends on when they offered each of them. I get the concept of offering first, but at the same time, I can understand a staff having a cutoff to when they'll offer a kid. Don't know if that applies in these cases.

All I know is we've doing the same thing every year and expecting different results. Making a judgement now is silly. Let's wait until February....

    5. I realize the weak schedule Shadyside plays.

When evaluating players you always like to see kids who play above their competition whatever level it is. Briggs obviously does that.

Does he scream starting Division I tailback? Don't see where I said that.

Down the road should he become an adequate backup or excelling on special teams would still qualify him as a "steal." Enough higher rated kids from bigger schools don't even amount to that.

  18. I am writing from the local Big 33 area and previously housed many of the players for a week or so before the game. I would say that 90% of these kids picked a school based on the coaches and more specifically the head coaches. The coaches with the most charisma and personality got the best kids. If a kid befriended more than one coach then he might look at the institution. Most of these kids have egos and knowing how to stroke those egos pays big dividends. I just don't see PC in that category.

I know a lot of people say, committs this early in the game is meaningless... gotta wait until February.
However, if there isn't a coaching change, I don't see/hear of many "decommits"... my estimate is 5% (1 of 20) if no coaching change at original college commit... probably about 50% if there is a coaching change.
Has Rivals or Scout or ?? put together any stats regarding players keeping their commitments?

Point being... Pitt only has 1 commit whereby other colleges have 5-7 commits.

Virginia Tech, Temple, Rutgers... the near miss at Notre Dame... all of them total team performances that neither Wannstedt or Graham would have been able to conjure up with last year's Pitt team.

As for FSU... not ready yet to GUARANTEE a win like I did last year with VATech along with accurately spelling out the reasons why.

      But leaning that way.

Sorry if this news is coming a little too late.

I don't think it's accurate to say that "Pitt was dead before Chryst" (as far as recruiting):

In his one year here, Graham cobbled together a top-25 (perhaps even top 15) class, until he bolted. Which Chryst managed to promply turn into a Top 40 class.

Before TG, Wanny was an excellent recruiter with demonstrated results.

Now before Wanny? If you're going back THAT far, then yes there are some dark periods....

    1. So, it was Chryst's fault that Graham's Top 25 class (your description) became a Top 40 once Graham left? You don't think the way Graham left had anything to do with it? Sheesh!

    Kentucky - 6
    Vanderbilt - 8
    Rutgers - 8
    Boston College - 8
    Duke - 6
PSU - 8 (due to sanctions included in list)

    Pitt - 1

This is a apples to apples comparison. Not like LSU, OSU, Michigan, or Alabama are on the list.

I don't recall this ever being the case, even with the best class (Wannstedt's class of 2006).
Graham just had that one OL at this time during his tenure.

It's nothing new, and frankly, little to worry about.

It is immature and intellectually bankrupt to accuse someone of being in denial or making excuses just because they disagree with your opinion. I'm not defending him calling people losers, but on the whole I agree with what he wrote.

BTW, it is interesting that most of the posts defending Joe D are written by anonymous posters. If you find him tiresome and generally negative, just consider the source. 4. Anonymous,

It's May and if I remember right JoeD and others(maybe you or others like yourself) where throwing out panic alarms around this time last year. But PC ended up getting a class that has the potential to address the teams concerns.

As for being in denial. Where do you feel Pitt football ranks in terms of the other Division I-A teams? They're not Alabama, OSU, PSU, FSU, Texas, etc. Sorry they won't get every player "you" feel they MUST sign. But that's life.

They've made around 80 offers so far and will work with the kids and their families to find 15-20 who are good fits and "want" to play for Pitt. So get used to reading about kids Pitt offered signing with other schools as at least 60 of them won't be coming.....

And Dan's right, I shouldn't have called JoeD and you loser so I apologize for that.

  31. I realize that it's May, and there isn't much to discuss regarding Pitt football, aside from recruiting and player suspensions, but it's premature to be bashing Pitt's recruiting efforts.

The only date that truly matters is LOI day, and even then you can't tell what kind of a person/player someone will be (ie Shell, etc).

The only way to actually know about a coach's ability is if he's able to take the players that he brings in, and mold them into a successful team on the field.

I'm skeptical of Chryst's ability to do that, but I'm willing to give him time to prove himself.

  32. I believe JoeD is a professional troll and gets a piece of the take from the click revenue the site generates.

It gives Chris a chance to go off for a while and do some in-depth research and not have to worry about posting something every day to get hits.

He must of had the same deal with Zeise, but not Sam Werner. The latter must have refused to pay Joe's price because Zeise leaves the Redshirt Diaries and poof! Away goes Joe.

He was short-lived on Mr. Smizik's site which I attribute to Bob's large baseball following. He neither needed or cared for Joe's antics.

Joe moved on to PittBlather to sell his wares, but those guys has so many daily hits, JoeD simply got lost in the shuffle and had nothing to sell.

I've yet to see him make a concerted effort to crack the Cardiac Hill site...so perhaps we will see him there at some point.

5 transfers and all 5 were Chryst recruits from 2012 class.

    ReplyDelete
  35. They were kept because Chryst publicly announced he would honor all commits who were committed to fraud Graham if they still wanted to come to Pitt. So, in sffect some of these recruits were not necessarily kids who Chryst would have recruited in the first instance had he been around from the previous spring.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not exactly. That can be said about the Davis twins.
However, Chryst pursued Rippy and Jackson as they never committed to any team until late January.
Shell, I'm sure Chryst would have pursued him.

      Delete
    2. PC was hoping he could put weight on both Rippy and Jackson so that they could play the positions that they were recruited for. In order to do it the right way (weights & conditioning)it would requitre extra work on their part. They were not willing to do that. No big deal. They are both good kids. I wish them well.

      Delete
    3. Fair enough. However, I am sure that Rippy and Jackson were recruits originally pursued by the previous staff and for which there was already an established recruiting relationship--including with their high school coaches. Whether Chryst & Co. would have pursued them otherwise (maybe yes and maybe no)is an open question. When a new coach comes in at that late in the recruiting process he is going to continue recruiting guys who have already had a relationship with the University because it is for the most part too late to start fresh with many other recruits.

      Delete
  36. You simply dont honor scholarships to save face especially when they don't fit your system. All these potential recruits still available to pitt are only hearing suspensions and players bolting from the program. Nothing but bad news is coming from this current staff and these recruits do talk. The mistakes this staff continues to make is pathetic. The silence around the Keller chryst visit is another point this is football Not the secret service. You win football games with a band of brothers not a family. Pitt needs a major commit to stop the bleeding and soon because. A roster full of Mac level talent doesn't equate to winning football games in the acc. (Ron.b)

    ReplyDelete

    1. There were a few recruits right from the get go that were encouraged to look elsewhere: Brandyn Cook,C from Ohio, Corey Jones WR from Penn Hills, Alkwan Williams LB, William Parks CB. PC accept other kids that he thought he might be able to add weight and play the pro style. Some worked out,(Render 250 lbs, Bradley 195 lbs, Caprara 200 lbs,) Others did not.

      Delete
    2. Few other things to add:

      1. Didn't our favorite poster Joe D keep mentioning that Pitt would finish with over 85 scholarship players and that several would have to leave? This in some way was going to happen.

      2. Albeit under different circumstances, players leave SEC schools all the time. Doesn't seem to hurt them with recruits.

      3. I think most of the players who have left are 2nd year players. i.e. players that would have blocked positions for incoming recruits

      4. What recruits will notice the most is winning. I get the feeling a lot are waiting to see what Pitt does this fall. I keep saying, got to finish 8-4.

      Delete

  37. Having a team laden with "MAC level talent" doesn't stop you from winning games in the ACC so long as you have the play makers in key positions.

It's not like the ACC is full of Alabamas or Oklahomas.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Reserve safety Marvin Robinson has left the Michigan Wolverines, a team spokesman confirmed to WolverineNation on Monday morning.

Robinson's departure leaves just 10 players at Michigan from the 26-member recruiting class in 2010. The 6-foot-2 Winter Haven, Fla., native was the 21st-ranked outside linebacker in his class.

You think we already have 2 small wrs with Jones and Weatherspoon). Everyone knows Carswell was not willing to go across the middle so no big deal. Trainer can perform cpr, can go through concussion test, can do defrib as they have them, can call 911 for ambulance, etc.

    1. 21, I'd hope Chryst wouldn't cut off his nose to spite his face. If a kid chose to go elsewhere initially and then circumstances bring him to Pitt, I'd welcome him to the program, assuming he's a good fit talent-wise and character-wise.

      Delete
    2. I would pass on Rawlins.
But then again, Chryst may be desparate as he only has 1 recruit. Rawlins may not have to sitout as theoretically he didn't play a season yet.
If Rawlins is willing and has a positive attitude to play another position then perhaps. He didn't pick Pitt because Pitt didn't want him as QB.

      Delete
    3. Pitt should never be seen or viewed as Option # 2. Rawlins actively recruited for WVU against Pitt last year and also for the recruits taking visits this year. So my response would be thanks, but no thanks.

That said, if he wants to change his stripes and is willing to pay his own freight and compete as a walk-on, that is a different story. Make him earn the scholarship by proving to the players and the coaches he really wants to be here. Paul Chryst wants athletes that want to be at Pitt. Exceptions this early in the process is not a good precedent.

I said this a year ago about Chavas. He will never see the field as a qb at wvu. Childress and Ollie have a great relationship and Chavas would never break through. That said, they misled the kid and said they would give him a chance at qb. LIE@wvu. PSU Obrien is the same. This is why due diligence must occur prior to LOI day. Athletes and their parents must look hard at the "three deep" (two deep + redshirts in waiting), as well as incoming class. That is why I worry about the TJ OLB and Kugler from last year. They are small fish in a big pond at the Michigan's and OSU's. You don't crack the field early, you are in trouble. That is why the opportunity at Pitt is fantastic for these kids, but they don't see it because of the recruiters building them up so much just to get them in.

As far as Chapman is concerned, there shouldn't be an issue with him joining the team and I don't see this as a replacement move at all.

BTW, coaches like Kevin Stallings can and do speak with other schools while under contract with their current school. Some would consider that tampering as well. My guess is Kevin Stallings (or Jamie Dixon, for that matter) would consider that looking out for himself. Those coaches often leave kids like Jeter high and dry in the middle of their current contracts, after assuring the kids they would never leave during the time the kid is at the school. Kevin Stallings has coached at numerous schools, and so it is likely he discussed and then took a job at another school while under contract at his current school. He's a total jerk and hipocrite for doing this to any kid that says he is unhappy and wants to go somewhere else. Tampering, my butt! Stop being an A-hole, Stallings!

  65. Janks - that guy spends to much time trying to monopolize someone else's Blog. He must be unemployed. HAHA

    ReplyDelete
  66. Stop the personal attacks on Joe D. Dixon doesn't get WPIAL players, with the exception of DeJuan Blair. Why is Dixon desperate for players right now? He doesn't make connections with the local AAU. That's been documented in the Post-Gazette. I'm surprised Dokish approves some of the moronic comments people make here. Joe D. has done his homework. Comments about unemployment checks should be banned. There's no place for them.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Honestly, I really get annoyed by everybody harassing the guy(joe d). If Dokish wanted to only hear his thoughts he wouldn't allow us to voice ours!

It's ok to disagree but some of you really get defensive if your wrong or if somebody flat out disagrees with you. Perhaps you guys need a lesson on blogging!!! If you do not like the comments and only want to hear what Dokish has to say that's fine, just don't read any further after Chris's initial article. It very easy!! Kiss- keep it simple stupid!!!

    1. Joe D pisses people off with his comments.
Whether he is right or wrong, he rubs people the wrong way. Don't know why.
Those that disagree, instead of healthy debate they resort to bully tactics. Seems they have their panties in a wad.
      Keep it civil people.

    2. Joe D doesn't bother me, in fact he kinda makes me chuckle. He obviously never played a team sport yet he thinks he knows it all. If the unemployment check comment was offensive then you guys need to get fitted for a new skirt because the one that you are wearing now is so tight that it is restricting the flow of blood to your brains. Hail 2 Pitt.

  68. Okay no more talk of Joe D. This blog will be relatively Joe D free from now on. If he has a constructive comment I will let it go but I'm guessing that there won't be many of those because he just can't help himself.

  69. Chris - Are we going to get any FB commitments over the Memorial Day Weekend or soon thereafter?

    1. More commits before xmas. guaranteed.

But we might have had another transfer, can anyone confirm Doakes is leaving?

    2. Yes, he was suspended for the entire up-coming season anyway.

    3. No.
      It doesn't matter. ;)
What only matters is February 2014 signing day. ;)
We will get 20 players, just don't know how good they will be.

  70. Chris please explain how a backcourt of James Robinson and Cam Wright will do in the ACC. Thanks.

  71. Has anyone seen Malik Hooker play? Hes been blowing up. Based on potential maybe

    ReplyDelete
  72. Hooker is much more proven as a basketball player but judging by the interest in him, he definitely has showed something in his one year of varsity FB. Mike White (PG) just wrote that Hooker reninds him of Revis, while notng of course that Hooker has a way to go to reach that level.

Nonetheless, considering that Hooker is allegedly a good student and person, I would think he is certainly worthy of taking a chance on him.

    1. It's not taking a chance. He's one of the best prospects in the state.

  73. (Ron b) If chryst & crew can somehow land Keller chryst that can very well be the signature commit that opens up the flood gates and lands a stellar class that this program so desperately needs if they lose him I see no recovery and chryst will leave soon After we have an AD that could care less about winning. S.P doesn't have that Pittsburgh passion for wanting a winner. All this bullshit talk about winning 1st and they will come. You have to have the ability to land top talent that will give the the horses to compete. This staff doesn't have an above average recruiter and in this business you need that go getter and closer.

    1. I have a better chance getting laid tonight than Pitt does in landing Keller Chryst regardless that his uncle is here.

    2. Yes, it'd be great if Keller Chryst commits to Pitt, but I wouldn't base the program's future success on one recruit. As I've written before, I don't make predictions on where kids will commit, but if I were Coach Chryst, I don't offer Keller unless Chryst is certain he'll attend Pitt. Not landing your nephew would look bad PR wise.

I don't think it's BS that on-field success translates into better recruits. I agree that you need aggressive recruiters that can land top talent, but I'm sure it was easier to recruit the elite kids after Pitt regained national prominence in the 70s.

As far as recruiters, Bobby Engram seems to either be on his way to becoming a good recruiter, or he's already there. I'll defer to Chris' judgment on how good he is.

  74. Did Dixon lie to us about Uchebo? Chris? Did he? He said he expects him to be ready. Others say that he won't be. Will he be at Green Tree?

  75. Dravon Henry to do official visits to UCLA and Florida State.
That is surprising but not really.
Why not take a free trip to a place you would like to visit and party!
But I heard Kentucky and Louisville may be added to his current list of 4 which is why the UCLA and FSU visits are surprising.

    1. From what I read it seems like everyone tells him he's supposed to go to pitt cus of his family and the pipeline. Which as a high school kid that would turn me off and I would get away.

    2. You have to know the history of Quip to Pitt.
His HS defensive coordinator, Peep Short, played and started at Pitt ('79-83).

Saw on another site the Chase Winovich is scheduled to make his decision today.

    Any insight?

    1. He chose Michigan.

A kid from TJ not going to Pitt is like a kid from Quippa not going to Pitt.

    2. With our recruiting staff, I'm not surprised.

      Delete
  77. Not anymore. HCPC moves on to others prospective recruits. Hurts that a good local recruit chose Michigan but Pitt can't cherry pick even with local recruits. Some will pick Pitt some won't.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Chryst is an awful recruiter. Can anyone really deny it at this point? Pitt isn't even competitive IN ITS OWN BACKYARD anymore. This is obviously partly the fault of a bad program for 30 years, but Chryst and his staff suck at recruiting.

This isn't Wisconsin, where there's no talent and you HAVE to develop talent. There's still talent around here....but if you can't get it, what's the point?

The football program should just be deep-sixed at this point. It's a waste and it's not fun to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Losing chase was this the good news that all the gurus said was coming? Chryst and staff can't even seal the deal on there own turf. Chryst is a bumbling idiot and now we get to see why Alvarez pushed him on pitt so he wouldn't destroy what bielema put together. Pitt is a sinking ship and will never be worthy in football again. How can you lose recruiting battles to a team on sanctions. (Ron.b)

    ReplyDelete
  80. My gut feeling is that Dravon Henry will not go to Pitt!!! I will be very surprised if he does.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Don't you know our recruiting season doesn't start until Michigan, PSU and ohio state have filled up there classes. They all have over 10 commits so we might get a commit soon.

Chris have you heard anything about Keller and when he will make a decision?

    ReplyDelete
  82. Even Rutgers has 10 commits and Louisville has 14
