Panthers add two more on defense

The commitment train keeps going for Paul Chryst and the staff as the Panthers add a giant defensive tackle and a local linebacker.

Defensive tackle Mike Herndon played linebacker at Riverheads HS in Staunton, VA, but at 6'4" and 320 pounds he will obviously make the move to defensive tackle in college.  Herndon recently participated in Pitt's camp.  His other offers include Virginia Tech, UConn, Western Michigan, James Madison, and Old Dominion.

Linebacker Quintin Wirginis is another player who impressed recently at camp, and he also committed to the Panthers tonight.  The other offers for 6'2" 225 pound Wirginis came from Temple, VMI, Robert Morris, and Slippery Rock. Wirginis plays at Fox Chapel HS in Pittsburgh.

  1. Chris,
What exactly do these recruits do at camp to catch a coaches eye? It's drills for the most part, how much can they show to a get a ship offer compared to what there game film shows. Seems like no one else is seeing it with quite a few of these kids besides pitt.

    1. They look at their speed, quickness, functional strength, temperament, etc. They can teach them techniques, but in person they can see if they have what it takes to be molded.

I've said before that at Wisconsin, especially Rudolph, love to offer kids that they see in camp.

Smallish, but 4.3 speed. I'll bet he returns more kicks for TD's at Pitt than that media loving 4 star recruit from Gateway...

The article also points out he's a "natural leader"

    4. Not me.
But I doubt the Wisky recruiting tactics will work in ACC.
ACC has more speed and skill than stodgy Big10.
Chyrst is not recruiting fast, athletic skilled players.
The Oline seems to be shaping up great. The Dline is unknown but players will be moved around. TE's looks to be in good shape. But the skill players starters/depth isn't there.

That is 50% as they will probably give out 20 even though they have 16 available.
So, Chryst is at the halfway point for 2014 class.
So far, it doesn't look good.

Frankly, I think Pitt bringing in all these MAC-like players will keep any/most elite players from coming to Pitt.

Frankly, you must have hit the bottle hard tonight... I know you hate it when people bring up Wisconsin, but take a look above and examine the recruiting classes of Wisconsin and compare it to Pitt's last class... It looks very familiar. A mix of elite and sleepers. Chryst will finish the class the same way...

    2. Yes, I did.
Just got in and saw the 3 commits.
Here is a quote from Wirgins in the Trib. It is similar to what the Shadyside coach said about Briggs.

“I've been to a bunch of camps, and I've seen kids stronger than me and faster than me who are better football players, but I think I can be better than them,” he said.

Kinda sums up the type of players Chryst is recruiting... Mac-like where you HOPE has lots of upside to play BCS. This is the ACC which has a lot more speed than stodgy Big10 (wisky) so I don't think the Wisky strategy will work.

    3. Anony at 1201,

Why did Wisky's head coach leave and say he wanted a better opportunity to win a national title? Shouldn't that be Pitt's goal?

    4. Since you are rarely correct, I'm glad you feel that way. Did UW look outclassed by Oregon, TCU, tO$U, Stanford, etc?

THere are many kinds of talent, Joe D. And the ability and desire to work is a talent that not everyone has.

Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.

I'd rather have a 2 or 3 star who works his tail off than a 4 or 5 star who coasts.

    7. Joe D -

Do you do any research before you post?

Since 2005, (the same time DW came on the scene) they have beaten the likes of:

Auburn 24-10 (2005 Capital Bowl) SEC
Arkansas 17-14 (2006 Capital Bowl) SEC
Miami 20-14 (2009 Champ Sports Bowl) ACC

      They lost to:

Tennessee 21-17 (2007 Outback bowl) SEC
TCU 21-19 (2011 Rose Bowl) - They were beaten by a team of two star players led by Andy Dalton
      Oregon 45-38 (2012 Rose Bowl) PAC 12
      Stanford 20-14 (2013 Rose Bowl) PAC 12

Seems to me they can keep up with some of the fastest and consistently talented programs outside the Big Ten in the country…

Besides, we are recruiting for speed. Check out the times of the last year’s class (Weah & Boyd for example) and what we have so far this year. Your point doesn’t hold water.

You used the word "if" please deal in reality. We are not landing 5 star players. When we do land a 4 star player locally more times than not they do not live up to their ranking. What are the results of DW's high ranking recruiting classes in the weak Big East??? That is reality. Another reality is that Wisconsin has been more successful the last 35 years than Pitt can dream of.

      Get real...

    12. I'd rather have a 5 star player that produces. But as I said, Pitt hardly ever gets a 5 star players, and when they do, they often disappoint. Would you rather have a team full of 5 star players like Chris Jacobson, Pat Bostick, Lucas Nix, Shayne Hale, T.J Clemmings, Rushel Shell, Dorin Dickerson? Should I even list the 4 star players? Or would you rather have a bunch of low 3 star and 2 star players THAT PRODUCE AND EXCEED EXPECTATIONS like Dion Lewis, Stephens-Howling, Gus Mustakas, Mick Williams, Greg Romeus, Jabaal Sheard, Mike Shanahan, Taglianetti, Devin Street, Jason Hendricks, Ryan Schlieper, Kwan Williams, Devin Cook and Isaac Bennett?

Would you rather win recruiting wars or win on the field??? Wisconsin has proven it can be done if your staff can ID players with upside and coach them up. Also, who says they are 5 star players????? So if Pitt gets Henry, Bookser, Nicholson you will be mad? Yes or no answer! From what you are saying it should be a yes.

    18. See the results someone posted below. Even with all the local talent, Pitt has not been successful compared to Wisconsin. That is an undisputed fact. I don't believe anyone is saying not to recruit 4-5 star players. The point is that even if you land local "elite" players it is no guarantee for success. I also believe that the local so called elite players in the WPIAL are overrated. May be the staff should independently scout the kids themselves and make up their mind who will help them in the scheme they are trying to run. DW ran a prostyle offense, but never recruited the right players. For example offensive line.

  7. Joe D you sir are wrong on two counts. Wisky was a very good team the last number of years. Secondly, Big 10 is at the very least on par with the ACC. Speed you discuss is not anything that most programs don;t have. Do you think Pitt doesn't have the speed and agility and players who can compete with most ACC teams. Think again. Where is the speed at VTech when Pitt pushed them all over creation last year? You know the price of everything but the value of nothing.

  8. Joe D I have a serious question.

Do you go out and actually watch these kids and break down the film like the coaches do?

    Please answer this question

    ReplyDelete

    1. I've seen some film and seen some players play games.
It depends upon the player and position.
For instance, people looked at Shell film and thought he was fast. I said he had quick feet and had a great stiff arm but was slow. You can't look at film to determine speed as wpial is slow, slow, slow. That is were combines are important and measurables.
Now there was that film on the big kid from Virginia that committed. He was playing 320 as MLB. But the film was misleading because he plays Single A ball. Single A just is powderpuff in my opinion. So, measurables will be important. The kid looked to have speed and quickness and a little of Sean Gilbert.

  9. Will Pitt start to pull any of its offers. I had to agree with Joe D but we need to save some room for the local studs. I'm not comlaining like him but we went from nothing to 10 recruits in a week. We have enough under the radar projections in this class. Time to take a step back and re-evaluate what rosters spots and areas of depth need to be filled.

  10. Joe D. - you say that prospective RBs aren't going to look at a OL that has Bisnowaty, Johnson, and Grimm as a foundation and think that it may be one of the best OLs in CFB in a year or two?

Chryst is recruiting kids who 1) he wants to play in his systems and are coachable toward that and 2) who most probably won't bag out of the program due to academics or disciplinary issues in the future.

There is no upside in recruiting a kid who is marginal in that regard and waste the time and effort when he's going to be gone anyway.

You say these kids have no talent but the majority of CFB players grow into being talented football players in the systems they are taught over the years. There are few one year wonders. If you don't have players who can do that and contribute then you've problems down the line.

This class really does needs some more blue-chippers and I think that will happen as the recruiting season moves along but I'm not looking down my nose at who they have already committed.

When he is wrong, instead of just admitting it, he attempts to divert attention by bringing up side issues. As the saying goes, it takes a big man to admit he's wrong.

Then we they do, they use Pitt as a fall back plan, only to sit on the bench or leave the team all together(Cullen Christian, Ricketts, Devlin, Etc) and when we do get a 4 star local recruit, we are sick of seeing them not play up to potential or worse, get arrested, suspended, bad attitudes, etc.

    3. The ACC has a substantial worse BCS bowl record than the Big East, and more often than not since 2003 when Miami and Va Tech exited, the Big East was the higher rated conference.

WVU, Louisville and Rutgers all had their best years from 2005 thru 2008 while Miami and FSU were mediocre. Two years ago, WVU (Big East) scored 70 points aginst ACC Champ, Clemson, and this past year, Big East Champ, Louisville, dominated Florida in the Orange Bowl while the ACC Champ lost another BCS bowl.

At the bottom, Syracuse for much of these years were much better than WFU, UVa or Duke, whoever was at the bottom of the ACC.

      Delete
    4. Joe D - So what your saying is the ACC just had a big talent drop so that should further improve Pitt's chances for next year. I agree.

HLandPitt - Looks like someone already gave you some facts about the POWERFUL ACC. But's a couple more items:

      1. Last years ACC champion (FSU), played in the Orange Bowl against.....wait for it.....MAC Champion Northern Illinois.

      2. As part of the conference reworking, who was the one scrambling to find a partner for the Orange Bowl?. Yea, the power conference that now get's to play what either the B10, B12, or SEC 4-5th ranked team.

      Delete
    5. For a while, the ACC was worse than the Big East.

That changed in 2010, when there was a massive dropoff on the part of the Big East, and the ACC - most notably Florida State and Clemson - started to rebound.

Even without the Big East being gutted, it's easily the better conference now. And yes, it is on par with the Big 10, Big 12, and Pac-10. The bowl set-ups mean nothing as far as this goes.

That said, if Pitt can hold serve at home, they have a chance to contend and have a successful season.

As mentioned, it seems obvious that Chryst is following the model that was used at Wisconsin, where he was part of the staff. It worked very well for them, contrary to what some ignorant posters think. Whether or not he can duplicate it at Pitt, time will tell.

      Delete
    3. Not excuses, just reality and I don't know if I've read much were Pitt fans are saying they want nothing to do with 4-5* players. Seems most think if we can get them great, but if not, the team can still produce a winner and Wisconsin as an example.

But it's been more than Wisconsin that's been a winner without consistently recruiting top 20 classes. Take a look at Northwestern, Kansas State, Cincinnati, WVU, TCU, Boise State, Arkansas, Oklahoma State, etc.. All have had good runs with rosters not loaded with 4/5* type players.

Maybe you feel like some that Pitt is not giving it's all when it comes to football and I'd agree. But the tone is set by the President and through his actions it's clear football isn't a top priority. So some like to voice concerns over this and point to examples where other schools have made big improvements, while others say that's the way it is so make the best of it.

  22. Guys - I think it is fair to say that while recruiting is important, after all it is how you actually field a team, there are so many factors that weigh into success in college it is almost impossible to look at 99% of the HS recruits and know whether they will be starters in college let alone star players.

Everyone would prefer a roster loaded with 4* and 5* recruits but even then they still have to acclimate to college ball, work hard, learn systems, etc... to be effective.

The recruit sites evaluations are so variable it is hard to know, as a regular fan, which one is true. All you have to do is look at Mark Myer's ratings coming off his SR year. He was a 4*, 3* and a 2* depending on where you looked.

  27. Dobie - they 'can' be reinstated but when a HC takes the very serious step of "dismissing" a player rather than the "indefinite suspension" route they usually don't change their minds.

I'll caution fans to understand that these decisions aren't made only based on the one incident that was published... there may well have been other internal negative issues with the players that led to dismissal vice suspension.

Bad attitude, previous discipline, etc... all can be strike one or strike two for these kids. Strike three may be the incident that was public.

I agree that he does lack credibility

  31. JoeD--Uchebo is reportedly healthy--But, you can be pretty sure Dixon is just doing what any intelligent coach would do with a guy just recently recovered from a serious injury--that is being overcautious and keeping him from possible re-injury playing in a meaningless summer league. Got to think he is instead working on getting Uchebo's overall strength and conditioning improved under the careful scrutiny of Pitt's athletic training staff.

  32. Swanson is a more proven player than Briggs. Since both Soph seasons, Swanson more than doubles Briggs in rushing yards with 2, 450 compared to Briggs 1200. Briggs got offered as an athlete. Swanson was first team all state last year as an athlete, Briggs didn't even receive honorable mention. Maybe, Pitt coaches didn't watch Swanson rush for over 200 yards (at Heinz Field), while Shai McKenzie was held to 32 yards. Maybe you can tell me what Briggs has done better than Swanson in the eyes of the Pitt coaches Chris.

Chryst should let him back to add depth, he is talented and may need a stern coach like Chryst to help him get his life in order. And if this affects Shai Mckenzie's decision to come to Pitt, then so be. One player shouldn't effect selecting a college that fits you.

If Paul believes he is a good kid and needs help, guidance, wants help, is willing to accept it by changing his life style, if Paul thinks that it was a time when he just lost it and now understands that the party lifestyle needs to change than I would let him back. If Paul believes the kid does not really want to change than no. Stress can be a horrible thing and it can leave to bad choices. Get some structure and good people around u and things can change, but Paul has giving me no reason to think yet that he is a push over or a cold heart-ed person. Ill let him decide. 45. Joe D - I passed along some info three days ago that Shell wanted to come back to PITT and had asked for reinstatement and guess what? He had done so!

BTW - not sure what anyone means about Bostick not wanting to play because of Wannstedt and I never once wrote that or anything akin to it. I do know that Bostick was offered a great job with the PITT athletic department and also to be the color analyst for the radio broadcasts so he chose to start his life's work instead of playing ball. Which was a good decision obviously as he wasn't going to get any playing time regardless of who the coach was in 2011.

Anonymous - Pat Bostick chose not to play his redshirt senior year even before Todd Graham was hired, I had learned that from his Dad before the 2010 bowl game, so whether or not he fit into Graham's offensive system is a moot point. Also - I sat with Pat SR during that spring game and I can assure you that he certainly didn't hold up any sign of protest.

No way in hell he lasts at WVU IUP or CalU. Everyone knows this. Everyone knows he has the talent. Make him earn his scholarship and make it one more strike and he is out. It will greatly help recruiting in my mind. He has the ear of Quip kids. Look at dravon henry wanting to see UCLA. Doesnt happen often for a Quip kid. Make Shell pay his own way for a couple weeks to see if he earns the scholarship. Not like he would pay for school anyways if he applies FAFSA right. In my mind it is hard to not help him.

    2. If the 3rd string long snapper was in a similar situation nobody would be saying he is just a kid or he deserves a second chance. Let's be honest here. People want Shell back because he's good and at a position of need. If you owned a business and Shell is who he is, you would not invite him back to work for you again. But athletes have always gotten away with things because there's not that many of them who perform at a high degree, and if you can do that, you will have people bend over backwards for you.

      Delete
    3. Exactly, I am ok with that. I would not kiss his ass though to get him back. It would have to be Pitt's terms. A probation year. Make him earn a spot and not just give it to him

  48. Of course you allow him to come back... UNLESS... Chryst and his staff are convinced Shell is a truly "Bad Apple" that will poison the positive mood that seems to have taken over the team since his departure.

Keep in mind that I'm not saying this because I think Shell is so good. I'm on the record clearing saying otherwise. At best, a productive college running back in the mold of Maurice Clarett.

But Shell is 19 years old and he did choose Pitt over the many other offers he had coming out of high school. If deserving in the eyes of the coaches, just as with the "wayward son" he should be welcomed back into the fold.

However, only with the strictest of conditions.

Chryst needs to explain to Shell that he's rejoining the team with "two strikes" against him. In effect, a probation where NOTHING will be tolerated.

  68. Shell is worth the effort imo. Coach Chryst can turn this into a recruiting coup. Parents send kids to college and under the guidance and tutelage of coaches. Despite most peoples thoughts to the contrary, coaches are required to mold these kids into men. Parents fail at this daily, regardless of athletic stature. Sometimes, there are stumbling blocks. This is one of those times.

PC needs to develop a plan for handling multiple offenses. My suggestion is as follows :

    1. Apologize to the entire team
    2. Pay your own way for a year
    3. Require a 3.0 qpa
    4. Require weekly drug tests - random style
    5. Practice squad only
    6. No apartment life. Live in dorm.
    7. Psychological counseling and 12 step program required

This shows parents that the Program will give their son every chance to grow as a man. We have all made several mistakes along our respective journeys. I continue to make them, but am fortunate to be surrounded by executives comfortable in their own skin. What Pitt doesn't get is that this will be used against them in recruiting. Pitt will be viewed as a program that gives up on their players if they make a couple mistakes. Can be problematic. What can Pitt disclose to parents and potential recruits that would put them at ease? It's easy as a coach when a player does everything right, but when things look bad, then what?

Is there a student disciplinary review board record of such incidents? There should be. The athletes should not be treated differently or protected. Was this followed? If not, re-instate under the plan, now. I know this will incur the wrath of many, but taking the opposite side of such a polarizing issue, can be fun. Happy debating.

  72. I wouldn't get my hopes up on Shai. He seems to have a bad attitude, and a me me mentality. The way he handled the Shell controversy was not good. He thinks he'll be doing Pitt a favor if he signs. The only reason he has Pitt in his top 5 is because he thinks he will play right away, and if he doesn't get his way who knows. I think Pitt are better served getting the players who feel they have something to prove, rather then these WPIAL players who look down on Pitt.

    1. You're judging him based on twitter? Who looks down on Pitt?

  73. I stand corrected on shell. I am glad he is off the team. There is right and wrong in this situation. PC did right. PC knows what he is doing. Trust the process

  74. PSU picked up another recruit. 4 star cornerback from Blt. Son of former NFL player. BOB sure can recruit.

    1. BOB was smart enough to surround himself with good recruiters.

    2. Including 2 who were on the staff while Sandusky was using the program as a stalking ground. Their refusal to completely clean house tells you why they should've been shut down.

  75. Story and thread on Scout that Pitt pulled the offer from Fields of Quip as them met their allotment for DT/DE's of 2. I find that interesting because Pitt needs 4 Dlineman in this class.
Fields was at Pitt on Saturday.
Saturday is when I spoke with a Quip coach whereby Fields was a heavy lean to Pitt.
So, don't know of latest development. Don't know if they pulled offer from Boxen either.
If Chryst is thumbing his nose at Quippa, it could be interesting as this occured after Revis camp. Wonder if Revis had words with Chryst.

  76. Joe D you got your wish and they are down recruiting boxen. They are not done with Fields. WHats yours opinion on Swanson. Met him and I think he is a great kid. I think he could be a decent player too.

  77. Dravon Henry, Rushel Shell, Jaleel Fields, Sage Curry, and Terry Swanson all live within 10-15 minutes of each other. The reality of them all starting a new consistent pipeline down I79 South to Morgantown is very close to coming to form. Curry already committed. Henry, Shell, Fields, and Swanson will be visiting Morgantown either Tuesday or Wednesday. This will have all of Beaver County saying "Let's Go, Mountaineers"

    1. What? I thought the Quip's laugh at Shell. Now suddenly they are going to go to school together in Morgantown?

Guess you got this from The Dude, right?
