Jamie Dixon adds more speed and talent for this season

Apparently Jamie Dixon has heard the complaints about the Panthers not being fast enough.  After already adding lighting quick guard Josh Newkirk into the fold Dixon has added his clone in 6'3" Detrick Mostella of La Lumiere HS in La Porte, IN. Like Newkirk, Mostella, a native of Alabama, is lighting fast.  Mostella originally committed to play at Oklahoma State back in November of last year.  His offers included Georgetown, West Virginia, Georgia, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Miami, and Texas A&M.  He is a 2013 prospect so he will be eligible to play this season.

  1. Chris,

With all of the changes with late transfers coming in (and out), could you give a quick summary of the roster for next year and where each player likely fits in as well as their eligibility. For instance, with the latest recruit from Rutgers coming in along with Uchebo, I have absolutely no clue how many scholarships they have available for 2014. Maybe that's a good thing because I haven't heard any major names being associated with Pitt. Thanks. The team is definitely in better shape that it was a few months ago but still seems to be lacking inside presence and depth.

    1. Mostella was a 4star SG ranked 53 overall by Rivals.
      Huge get.
      How did that happen Chris?
He asked to get out of LOI and signs with Pitt in less than a week. Pitt never offered him before. Why did he want out of LOI in summer?

    2. I believe OSU over-recruited because they did not expect Smart to return to school. Mostella, being a SG, is the recruit that chose to leave.

  2. this is the guy that we need, everything checks out, what a nice surprise

  3. Do you see him getting any minutes this year? Did he sit out a year bc of grades? He is a 4star should be interesting to see him play if he can play defense and rebound

    1. He will definitely get minutes this year. Hell, he may even start at some point.

  4. If Dixon really listened to the fans...well...that's not a good sign.

  5. There is a youtube clip of him winning a dunk contest that is absurd - he jumps over 3 guys one of them being 6'10 - he boosts himself a little but its still ridiculous.

  6. Looks to be a scorer, not necessarily a defense first guy. Will be interesting to see how JD employs him. At some point, JD needs to let these 4 stars play to their strengths. It will be a more exciting brand of hoops.

Kudo's to the staff for rounding out this class well. It seems that this is a verbal from what I have seen. IS the young man eligible to play in 2013, assuming the skill set is there or is there a concern from the clearinghouse? Secondarily, when is the next binding LOI period? Thanks Dokish.

    1. If you're talking about Mostella, he can sign right now. In fact, he's expected to sign today.

  7. in 3 months, immediately after Adams' announcement, Pitt went from 'the near future looks really dim' to 'can't wait until Novemeber'

Chris's tweet takeoff on Mark Twain's quote about reports of JD's death being premature was right on.

But as a Pitt fan, I always fear the negative ... Chris, should we worry about Uchebo's health?

    1. I'm not sure Uchebo will be able to give much this season. I was told by a college head coach that he heard that Minnesota's doctors said he wouldn't be able to play this season. So I guess we'll see if that's proven wrong. But he's a big time talent so you have to take a chance with him.

    2. Dixon said there is nothing wrong with him. Did he lie to us?

  8. Pitt is going to need some offensive-first guys heading into the ACC, and I like that. It's a scoring league. Sure, Pitt will still play defense but this might kick-start the program bringing in more skilled offensive players.

  9. JD has one more scolly to give for 2013. Here's hoping he gets another gem to round out this class. It sure looked bleak when Adams declared for the draft. Certainly a nice little turnaround for the coaching staff. Good to have SLICE back on the recruiting trail.

  10. Was Barry the main recruiter hear bc the aau conections? How did they pull this off without anyone hearing about it? Let's hope there is no tampering involved since he was property of OSU

  11. Jeter will be the last scholarship for 2013-14 and he'll sit out a season under the transfer rules.

    1. Pitt can't give Jeter an athletic scholarship since Vandy put a block for 13/14 season.

Heard Jeter is going to walkon and pay his way the 1st year. Probably get some financial aid package that may literally mean nothing out of his pocket.
      Any truth to that??

    2. Can a transfer like Jeter play right away if they pay their own way?

Looks like Pitt will have to play a Nova or Tar Heels (2013 Heels) version of basketball. 4 guards. Of course now JD will probably milk the clock a la Tar Heels pre-shot clock.

    3. He would still have to sit out. And Zanna and Young will probably start so they won't have four guards.

  12. Sounds like this was a great get for Jamie. But is there any hope that he can start picking up guys like this when they first commit?

    1. He did. Mike Young and Josh Newkirk are no slouches.

  13. Mostella looks every bit of a "One and Done."

The real story here is that Rohrssen's return looks to already be making an impact. .. and that speaks well into the future.

  14. Chris,
The transfer from Rutgers will he be able to play this year or does he have to sit out a year.

    1. He should get a waiver to play this season.

  15. This is the type of recruit Pitt should be reeling in all the time. Very nice get, by all accounts.

The question is, does Dixon change his system enough to allow these fast, athletic guys to flourish?

  16. Pitt now only has 2 scholarships for 14/15 incoming year.
    Patterson and Zanna.
Pitt also still has 1 remaining scholarship this year. Don't know who that may be going to.
However, if the 1 remaining is not Jeter, than Jeter will be using 1 of the 14/15 scholarships.
Therefore, Dixon only has to recruit 1 player for the 14/15 recruiting cycle. Interesting dynamics.
I would venture to guess some transfers after 13/14. Wright? He may not have to sitout if he graduates.

    1. Now you're already speculating who will transfer a year from now? There's no reason to believe that any of them will.

    2. Wright will be a RS Jr this year.
He was also rumored to transfer out in the spring.
Yes I'm speculating but with Wright, I believe it could happen but depends upon this year playing time and if he has enough credits to graduate in the spring.

    3. btw... the main point was Dixon only has to recruit 1 player for 2014. Hopefully it is a BIG.

      Delete
    4. He'll probably begin the season as the starter so as long as he doesn't totally flop playing time shouldn't be a problem.

      Delete
    5. Of course he's going to add another big.

  17. 3 schollies next year -- Patterson, Zanna and Randall

and 4 if the extra one is not used

    ReplyDelete

    1. Randall's is used this season and Dixon uses all of his scholarships.

    2. Doesn't Randall have 2 years of eligibility?

  18. Chris - When will Dixon make a final 4? That's a huge blemish on his resume. And I mean huge.

    1. I didn't know it was so easy to get to a Final Four. It may never happen. At least Dixon gets Pitt to the NCAAs.

  19. What is this about Mostella not being eligible now?

    ReplyDelete

    1. A college coach told me that Mostella is not eligible yet.

    2. Chris - I heard Dixon on thefan during the ACC fest about moving the tourney to MSG. Sounded like Coach K and Roy told him to forget about it. Dixon basically said Greensboro is rich in tradition and will be a great success there. Sounds to me like the ACC told Dixon to pipe down.

  20. Chris - If Uchebo is hurt, did Dixon lie to us when he said there was nothing wrong?
