The NCAA rules for the Quiet Period

Okay I have to change this because the rules are different for football and Henry is considered a junior and not a senior.  But, Henry can call Pitt at any time, and according to the 247Sports report, Pitt reached out to people close to Henry three times and asked that he call Pitt.  He did three times and nobody answered.  No matter how you look at it, it's incompetence.  That's if the report is accurate.  But it came from two different sources and I don't think anybody would be surprised considering Pitt's recruiting over the last two seasons.

  1. Chryst and crew no different than Keystone Kops.

Furthermore, there are evaluation periods that can be used in June.
If you all recall, there were prospect camps in JUNE!!! How the hell do you think the player and parent coordinated.
Heck there are players that committed in June and July, how the heck do you think that happened?
Can't believe how some koolaid drinkers are spinning facts!

  2. Chryst continues to be in WAY over his head.

Today he changes assignments on the coaching staff - taking the RB coach out of coaching and putting him solely in recruiting. What head coach does that once you have started pre-season practice.

if you had concerns, you make the move in the off-season

Chryst remains clueless. I fear a disaster in impending

  3. You can't call recruits during the Summer, I don't see why you guys see this as a problem. Dravon is still a top priority.

  7. I won't believe a single thing about the recruitment of Dravon Henry or Shai Mckenzie until they actually say where they are going, or better yet sign. It seems Dravon's father likes to talk as well as other people from Aliquippa. It seems as though the people of Aliquippa are trying to strong-arm Pitt into offering Fields and Swanson.

As for Mckenzie- This kid just loves the attention. I don't believe for one second VT is leading for this kid. It's still either FSU or Pitt. He said he wasn't thrilled with Blackburg and his visit was just ok and now all of a sudden we are supposed to believe that after a few phone calls with the VT coaching staff they are his new leader...Not buying it.

Both of these kids/families are using the media for their own purposes

    1. I think FSU pulled the offer from McKenzie due to his tweets of bashing Vickers (RB committ to FSU).
Mike White of PG interviewed Shai and that is what Shai was quoted to saying... VT.
Fields of Quips was offered and rumored that Pitt pulled the offer after getting 2 Dlineman commits.
Swanson is a hell of a lot better than Briggs from Shadyside. smh on that one.
      Major diss to a pipeline.
Problem is, Clairton did this last year and Pitt offered 2 other to get Boyd. 3 for 1 deal. The other 2 will never see the field in their career.
Layfayette Pitt did the same to get his cousin Jevonte a scholarhip from Pitt. jevonte is not bcs quality.

      Delete
    2. I think it's ridiculous that the people of Aliquippa expect Pitt to do a package deal but not PSU or WVU. And I don't think this is the first time Henry's camp has gotten to the media with the whole, "Pitt isn't recruiting Dravon as hard as they should stuff." If they don't care about Pitt they wouldn't go to the media. I wouldn't call it my opinion but I think it's certainly possible that they are trying to get Pitt to act desperate after thinking that Henry is pissed off. It's just odd.
-I know Shai himself said VT but I don't believe him for one second.

      Delete
    3. Henry's parents didn't go to the media.
If they did, it would be in the Beaver County Times.
Wpial Insider, who contacts players and their parents all the time, was first to report. Henry didn't call them. Other recruiting sites picked up on it and contacted Henry for verification.
Anyone from Aliquippa doesn't have to go to the media regarding Pitt. Quick call to Chris Lasala who is a Quip grad and lives in Hopewell. Coach Z has Chris on his cell speedial.
I don't think Henry is doing a "package deal" as you say. I'm just saying it happens.

Shai Mckenzie is a different story. He and his coaches seek out the media and media attention, etc. From ESPN to wpial insider, etc.

    4. I just looked at the guys twitter feed and he said Dravon's father called him. I don't know whether or not Henrys father is lying about Pitt not answering their calls but I do know that Henrys father has some sort of agenda. HE is calling the media and getting this negative stuff about Pitt out there. Whether it's there for an excuse if Henry decides to go to WVU, if he's just stirring the pot, or whether he is trying to get Pitt to go harder after his son...I don't know.
To me, it's odd for his father to call someone and say how Pitt hasn't answered their calls. What's the point?

  8. I don't understand the staff changes.
Desmond Robinson is Player Personnel Director
    Dann Kabala is Recruiting Coordinator
What is the difference between the two?
Seems like a demotion for Robinson. Could it be due to Shell?

Player Personnel is a staff position therefore it opens up a spot for "fulltime coach". NCAA permits 9 coaches and Pitt now has 8 since Robinson shouldn't count as a coach.

I agree with you that the Chryst experiment is not going well and will probably only get worse. I stopped being a cool-aid drinker this week. My question is that when can you possibly see him being fired at the earliest. I fear he has a really long leash due to Pitt's past.

  12. Go to Panterlair's twitter and you'll see when you can and can't make calls. Dokish had it wrong as well. Peak was saying that Pitt has been in contact with Henry thru social media. You can't make a call to a recruit from June 1 to September 1 and then it's only once a week.

    1. Everybody knows that Pitt talks to Henry through social media. The point is, Henry supposedly was reached out to three times to call Pitt, which he is allowed to do, and all three times he called Pitt did not answer. This current staff has done similarly unorganized things in the past so this is not something that would be farfetched, especially since Pitt appears to also believe they have a problem with organization or they wouldn't be shifting things around as far with their recruiting practices.

    2. An athlete and their parent CAN initiate contact with a coach 24/7 year round and a coach can talk to them.
There are certain time frames a coach CANNOT initiate the call.

      Issue regarding Henry:
      1. Why no answer of phone?
      2. Are the coaches giving out their cell # or did Chryst cabosh that?
      3. If central contact person, does that person have the ability to forward the call to a coaches cell?
      Seems like a cluster "F".
Reminds me of last year whereby several recruits didn't even know if they had an offer. Orndoff, Challingsworth, etc.

Its 2013 ya know. Lots of technology to utilize.
Maybe they saw Henry's phone number on caller ID and didn't want to pickup.

  13. Yeah, fire coach Chryst after one season and see where that gets Pitt football. That would make what, about 6 or 7 (I've lost count) head coaches in the last 3 years! You people are just something else! Who do think would take this job. Some low level division 3 coach that's who. Pitt football is not the great job some of you Kool-Aid drinkers (Joe D. here's looking at you kid) think it is, not even close and firing a well respected coach Like Paul Chryst after one season and after all the turmoil this program has been through these last couple years would definitely be the end of Pitt football! Might as well drop down to div. 2. This is going to be a long rebuild and if can't handle it then I suggest you find another team to root for!

  14. I like Chryst a lot, and I hope that he is successful, but it's hardly a given. I'm certainly concerned about his ability to build a staff. Some people act like Chryst is some sort of secret genius with his unusual staff appointments and reorganization. The problem is, *no* other big time programs arrange their staffs the way Chryst has, which indicates to me that it's not so much that he's stumbled onto some ingenious secret, and more that he's learning as he goes.

I assume that Turner and Poteat are solid GAs, but how many other major programs have GAs as position coaches? In Pitt's case, it seems like Chryst painted himself into a corner - by bringing on young and inexperienced coaches (Haering, House, Rudolph), he was forced to use some of his nine coaching slots for older coaches to mentor the younger guys. The problem is that these older coaches (i.e. Palermo) are redundant. So you've got three coaches coaching two positions (Palermo, Breckterfield, Haering), leaving gaps for some of the other positions (TE, CB).

  23. The real scary part.

Pitt has a serious quarterback problem.

Getting the sense that there may be a reason why Savage has found himself outside looking in since the start of his second season at Rutgers.

Admittedly, I was one of the many taken up by Savage's size and much talked about NFL arm. However, a look into his actual stats his freshmen and sophomore years at Rutgers reveals an immobile quarterback susceptible to interceptions and sacks due to a tendency to become oblivious to roaming defensive backs and blitzing linebackers.

Can Chryst fix him as with Sunseri? Not sure.

This leaves open the possibility that Voytik could very well end up supplanting Savage during if not before the game with Florida State. And that presents another set of problems.

Voytik is athletic and can run. He's also smart and, by the looks of things, a leader. But, the one thing Voytik can't do very well is... throw the football.

It became apparent from the Spring game that the kid just doesn't have the natural release you want from your quarterback. He tends to muscle the ball rather than spin it. Not a fatal flaw... but a handicap that will likely plague him throughout his career at Pitt.

Yes, Pitt has a quarterback problem.

  24. You people need to get out more. HCPC isn't going anywhere for quite awhile unless he leaves. Secondly, The AD is not going to jump on anyone especially a coach who was hired by his boss. The big money wants a program that is clean and values academics and stability. HCOC is recruiting exactly what he sees as fits. All this HS star ratings are BS unless you are a Big time program or you are cheating your a** off. Pitt will be OK in the ACC and this is good enough for a clean, student athlete program that on occasion recruits a really good player. Oh by the way, this incoming class is very good on both fronts.

Yes, there's excitement for Florida State and season ticket sales are great. The ticket sales have everything to do with the home schedule. Season ticket holders are expecting Chryst and Pitt to do their job: Be competitive, play hard, and win.

Chryst opened and closed the 2012 season with two real stinkers: YSU and Mississippi. He has a few years. But that's it. You want to see disappearing season ticket holders? Pitt gets swamped by FSU and the team looks like it did about half the time last year: unfocused, disorganized, apathetic. Yeah, the seat for Chryst should be a little warm.

Otherwise, go join the Patriot League.

Of course their are things that the staff can do better. but make no mistake Pitt will recruit develop and play the recruits who they like. I think it's time to say something different. Ok? Same old crap here and on the other sites you try and dominate. Seriously, you don't have to type the same thing 50 times on every blog. Everyone knows your ridiculous opinion. Leave it at that. If you have such a strong "tie" to Aliquippa, you should be pushing for those guys to go to Pitt and turn this thing around, not advise them to go elsewhere. Wanting Chryst gone is only going to set the program back farther. PLUS, don't you think his hands are somewhat tied or some of the "decisions" being made for him by the administration? Sure seems that way to me. That probably was somewhat partly why Chryst was hired as he probably agreed to it. And don't give me that crap about excuses. You live in a fantasy world.

  35. Joe is funny. Last month he said 6-6. This month it's 5-7. Next month it will be either 4-8 or 7-5 because he will say he was surprised that we beat fsu or some other team. LOL 2 jOE. You remain a legend in your own mind.

Doke, there is a difference between calling them as you see them and calling them as you want to see them. Pitt has changed their recruiting philosophy because the AD required it. The AD got his golden parachute and can now handcuff PC with recruiting. When the next Chancellor arrives and sees a dismal record, Steve P can say "he was my hire" and I would never have considered him. PC is forced to trust a vision of a wayward AD which does not bode well for him.

I continue to expect the 4*'s to start showing up two years from now, once the big OL has success. During the first month of the college football season, vegas tends to favor the teams with the most returning starters. That bodes well on the defensive side of the ball, but not so much on the offensive side. As such, fair to Midland results. Two years from now is the key. Huge OL, nice receivers, a 4*qb (either Voytik or Chapman). Big points!

The kids coming out now are being told to "create their own journey" instead of staying local. I heard this while on a big10 campus last week and the coaches actually believe they are convincing local Pittsburgh kids to grow into men and create their own path by leaving the area. They are testing and questioning their manhood which is working. When will the local athletes get it?

The fact is that if they are good enough, the nfl will call. If they are good enough and can't find the field, the nfl will not call. That is why Pitt remains such a good option for the locals if only they would put in the time, listen to the coaches and stop being led astray by people who appear to care, but are just hanging on for a piece!

  36. HCPC may or may not get his share of local recruits...who cares. He is extending recruiting as he builds the program and the Quips are not as important to Pitt as other areas. Besides, the coach is retiring and who knows what will happen anyway. Pitt will close on a couple of locals recruits and fill out the class with recruits from other areas. Tell Henry's dad he will like driving to state college to see his kid. The good news is his son will be home for the holidays the next three years.

  37. I am Shai McKenzie's mom n we don't use the media for nothing! Shai is a great running back. N All offers still stand. VT is the middle of the road between his father n me so that would b good 4 us. But the choice is his. He wants to be in a college where he fits in. He has not chose a school but he will in January. The publicity Shai gets is because he worked damn hard for it. People always wanna assume they know what's the deal but u don't have a clue. Choosing a college with over 30+ offers is stressful for a 18 year old. I am more concerned with his education being his primary choice. I know GT would give him a top notch education. N he would b minutes from me. N if u were good at what u been doing since the age of 6 u would like ALL the talk 2. Football has been his life. So with that said we as his parents are not rich at all and by the grace of God he was able 2 use his talent to get him a college education lord knows that's half the battle. We have 5 kids including Shai so he did what he had 2 do 2 make his future what it can be! Misty
