Todd Thomas leaving the football team

The hits keep coming for a reeling program as star linebacker Todd Thomas has informed head coach Paul Chryst today that he is leaving the team.

  2. How does this stuff keep happening??? Maybe there are other circumstances that we don't know about -- but if this all stems from yesterday and not running with the first team on day 1 of camp....then all I can think is....well I can't even type what I am thinking. Unreal. Talk about being a terrible teammate.
I'll be honest, I don't see Pitt getting any of the prime targets on the list in the previous post. So many of these athletes are all about themselves and that's it. Well it's pretty obvious that an attitude like that isn't going to fly with Chryst.

  3. Good thing Pederson got that nice big extension. Regardless of these guys could play or not, this is getting ridiculous. Most Pitt fans think SP got it right since Chryst lasted more than a season. Do we really need to go through their rap sheet?

    -Questionable recruiting
    - 2 month DC search
    - multiple transfers

  4. Well, that sucks. However, it says a lot about Thomas that he was reportedly lacking motivation on the very first day of practice. And if this is how the kid responds to the coaches trying to send him a message...good riddance.

  5. Unbelieveable.
That is now 20 players in 12 months plus 2 on 1yr suspension and Chapman yet to know about.

Where are those Chryst supporters now!!!

    3. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm with Joe D. Unless Pitt is a totally rogue program that would make Miami and the SEC schools blush, then Chryst is showing that he can't manage the difficult personalities that seem to be attached to the top talent.

Hey guys, not everyone is Larry Fitzgerald who scores six and flips the ball to the ref.

    4. So Thomas gets demoted to 2nd team on the first day of practice and his response is to quit. I'm having a hard time understanding how this is a poor reflection of the coaching staff and not the player himself?

Thomas does want to be at Pitt.

  6. I see a lot of people blaming Thomas but we have no idea what the circumstances are. The kid has been there for three years and I can't see him quitting over a one day demotion. There's more to it then that and for all we know, he was wronged. There does seem to be a lot of players who don't like how Chryst is doing things. Are they just babies? Perhaps. But we have to admit that it may also be that Chryst is handling these kids very badly.

    1. I agree.
Can't point at Thomas on this one.
This is clearly on Chryst so it makes you wonder if Chryst is clueless on how to handle and manage ego's.
Others such as Shell, etc had to go but even the koolaid drinkers thought Thomas was the best LB Pitt had. This one hurt more than any of the other 19 transfers/quit.

      Delete
    2. I agree that we don't know all the info. But you are solely blaming Chryst. Joe, come on. Wake up. This is what Street said about it "Some guys gotta go, and he wasn't on board so I can't do anything about it." If he thought PC mishandled TT, do you really think he would have responded this way? Seriously. We know you hate Chryst and we'll all agree that TT was a legit LB here, probably the best we had. But saying this is all the coach is BS.

      Delete
    3. Street is brown nosing Chryst these days.
He is on the spotlight for NFL. Frankly, I don't think he gives a damn. If he were a leader, he would have been in Todd's ear well before it got to yesterday. That is leadership.
Street is all talk these days and I haven't seen any leadership from him.

      Delete
    4. Do you know he didn't talk to TT? Didn't think so. That is reality.

      Delete
    5. That is a huge problem. This team has no leaders and they haven't had a leader in a long time. I think we lost more players than PSU and we don't have sanctions!
There is something going on behind the scenes.. Makes you wonder what the real reason Fraud left town after one year.

      Delete
  7. Dokes I've said it all along. PC is unable to deal with the personalities of the elite athlete. It is becoming pretty apparent now when most of the elite players have left. This team will be relegated to average players with average results. This is no knock on PC, you either have it or you don't. That's why's so many great coordinators fail as head coaches.
In three years we will be starting all over again unless the admin is happy with an average team and the field half full. Such a shame.....

  8. Joe D, What was Thomas' 40 time as he was running out the door?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Completely played out man. I've come to find Joe D to be pretty realistic. He doesn't assume everything is peachy just because he is a supporter. This program has been run into the ground since Pederson regained the reins. When Long was here the program was on the rise. Pederson has done NOTHING, but fail in every hire he has made. He should have made it abundantly clear that waiting two months to hire a DC from within was unacceptable. Instead he praised Chryst for promoting.

      Delete
    2. Thomas is one that I disagree with how it was handled as it was done so... so publically. So, it makes me wonder, what the hell is going on in the locker room. We are up to 20 quit/transfer/kicked off team in 12 months. That is a problem and its not just players not putting the work in ie. Shell.

Pitt needs to get a major A$$ kicking on national tv to get the attention of the koolaid drinkers. Welcome to the ACc.

I will be putting large some of money for FSU to easily cover the spread. FSU by 30 pts easy.

    4. Who wins PSU or Pitt when they play in a couple years?

      Delete
    5. Regarding PSU matchup.
At this rate of defection, I'm not sure Pitt will have enough players to field a team!

      Delete
    6. The season is looking pretty bleak. A 2 or 3 win season would be a realistic expectation. The way or program is developing, I can't see any of the local top talent heading to Pitt...why would they.

      Delete
  9. I agree that Pederson is the biggest part of the problem. The only good hire that he has made so far is Jamie D, and Jamie wasn't even his first choice. To bad his buddy Nordenberg gave him an extension before announcing his own retirement. Anyway, let's hope that cooler heads will prevail and TT will stay with the team.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I guess Thomas just tweeted that he didn't quit. So, did he get kicked off or is he taking a leave of absence. It seemed from Chryst's comments that the door may be open for him to come back.

Also, what big time players that Pitt has can't Chryst deal with? His best players, other than Shell, all stayed. Donald, Street, Hendricks, etc. You don't hear anything from them. All the other guys who left were backups at best. I watched Thomas and his mom confront the head coach of BF on the field at Heinz after they lost to Quip in AA Championship. He was a bit of a head-case back then.

I'm not "drinking Kool-Aid" cause I'm worried as hell, but I want those couple of questions answered.

  11. Dokes, I heard today from a friend that Thomas is headed to WVU. If this is so, does he even have eligibility after sitting out a year?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Let's see, Coach demotes player in practice to second team for one day. Player agrees it was for motivational purposes. Player does not come to practice next day and quits team. Everyone is blaming the coach. Huh? Talk about pandering to prima donnas! Suck it up Mr. Thomas!

Maybe the next thing we should do is only call plays that said player likes during the game so he doesn't sulk?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I too heard from someone within the Todd Thomas family that he would be attempting to transfers to WVU. That would leave him with one year of eligibility left. A player has 10 semesters to complete their athletic eligibility

    2. Makes sense of Todd Thomas to WVU.
Todd and Rushel are related I believe.
      They are good friends.

However, I think CalU because lots of kids from BF are at CalU and he could play for 2 years and not sit.

  15. There's an old saying that pertains to relationships, but also here: "It doesn't work to play hard to get if you're hard to want."

We've seen already that recruiting isn't exactly HCPC's strong suit. Jury's still out on his unique "We don't sell we just offer" approach.

But that, coupled with what could be a serious personality flaw to where athletes don't want to be around him or their position coach or whomever? Even after they decide Pitt's it for them? I think that's a recipe for disaster.

On a slightly different topic, I'm surprised that some of you don't blame Steve Pederson for causing global warming, West Nile virus, and village idiot Joe Biden getting elected as Veep.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Steve Pederson did not cause global warming! He could not since it really isn't a man-made phenomena.

    1. As the athletic director, your job is to oversee all athletic programs and if need be intervene. Not only did Pederson botch not one but two hires in football, but he also hired a guy with no head coaching experience who never was hired as a head coach despite interviewing at numerous universities. Look, in my opinion the jury is still out on Coach Chryst. There are some things I like about him, and things I don't like. Regardless, Pederson should step in at some point and find out why all these players want out of Pitt. Same goes with the basketball team in recent years. Pitt went from a perennial tournament team to a team that might make the tournament. This all under the watch of Pederson. I know I've said it before, but at its current state, Pitt isn't anything more than a MAC school.

      Delete
  19. None of us, except the parties involved, know for sure why he's made this decision. Maybe the kid's not adjusting well to Chryst's style or has maturity issues, or Chryst was too heavy-handed with him, or a combination of both. However, it hardly seems coincidental that he leaves a day after being demoted to second team. That would seemingly put most of this on the player.

I wasn't a fan of the Chryst hire, but he is trying to instill discipline that some players, especially those with pedigree, may not like. Whether his methods will work is still an open question.

Finally, this talk of "kool-aid drinkers" is particularly annoying. To me, someone who's lost their objectivity qualifies as a kool-aid drinker. Whether you're a non-stop Chryst basher, or an unquestioning loyalist, you're a kool-aid drinker. You're just drinking from different pitchers.

So before you call others "kool-aid drinkers", you may want to look in the mirror.

  20. Thomas was a playmaker and he did bring the wood (as stated earlier). The problem was that he was freelancing much of the time. I have heard from a number of people within the organization that he was unable to, or unwilling to learn his proper assignments. He made plays, sure, but there were many times when he was out of position and hoping others would take care of his assignments. (Take this info with a grain of salt as it is now third hand.)

  21. Well it is time for someone to get to the bottom of all this. A starter, and one of your best players, leaves after camp has started is alarming.

  26. Joe D.,

To say that the DB coaches at Pitt can't coach is not one of your brighter comments. They have to mid-round (at least) draft picks in Hendricks and Pitts. We don't know what they can do. But DB is a strength of this team. If you want to get on the recruiting, fine, but coaching is still way up in the air. I agree with a lot of what you say but not on this.

    1. Joe D's comments regarding Shai and Henry remind me of a line from "The Caine Mutiny" where Jose Ferrer says to Van Johnson, "Which is it, are you a fool or a mutineer?" "There's not a third possibility."

Only a fool or a mutineer would suggest to coaches that top recruits go somewhere other than Pitt (assuming it even happened). Why would a "fan" of a program do such a thing? Either he's foolish, or he isn't really a fan of the program.

My suspicion is that for all his bluster about rooting for Pitt, he's actually a troll who gets a kick out of getting under people's skin.

      Delete
    2. Actually, he's completely destroyed any credibility he has.

Joe D claims to be a fan, yet he (allegedly) tells a player's coach to steer the kid away from Pitt.

Now - while I do find the scenario rather unlikely - if said coach takes that advice and said player also does and goes to another school, we all know that Joe D will be the first one here telling us how Chryst is clueless, can't recruit, etc.. even though it would be apparent that Joe D himself had far more to do with the decision than Chryst.

It's almost as if he want Pitt to fail, so he can come on here and tell us how right he was right about it.

      Pathetic.

That is ahead of the Pitt football team doing well by leaps and bounds.

btw, wpial insider is saying nobody from Pitt staff has contacted Henry since late June. I think early July is when they pulled the offer to Fields. I guess that's my fault also.

    5. Or he just cares about the kid's future and doesn't think Pitt is the better place to make the nfl. You act like he is making the choice for the kid.

    6. Yes, I want Chryst replaced.
After his debacle with Todd Thomas, that was the last straw.
Reminds me of Fazio and Hackett.
If you recall, I liked Todd Graham initially. But, by the time August summer camp started, I was calling him a snake oil salesman and full of crap. Including bashing his wife for acting like a coach herself. I took lots of heat for that one but I was ahead of the curve.
Same with Rushel Shell, I've called him the next Marcus Dupree since he was in 11th grade. I got a lot of heat for that one. I said he was slow. Everyone said, look at the tape. I said, wpial is slow. 1st game, all of a sudden the koolaid drinkers said, wow, Shell is not that fast afterall. Took lots of heat on my Rushel Shell comments. Again, I was ahead of the curve.

    7. Good grief, get over yourself Joe. You act as if you had some special insight that no one else had. Your buffoonery and self-important nonsense knows no bounds.

And what a shock that your wanting the best for Aliquippa kids in is direct conflict with Pitt's interest. We know there's an agenda behind everything you wrote.

Boo hoo...poor Joe D. He's not being personally attacked, what he writes is being attacked, as it should be.

    8. Excellent point OriginalEther. In the remote chance that Joe D actually had any influence (which I'm sure doesn't exist), and actually was able to steer kids away from Pitt, he'd be the first one to then complain about Pitt's recruiting.

The sad part is, in his mind he probably does think he has influence. Thankfully, I'm sure any coach would ignore anything he'd have to say.

    9. Actually the offensive and defensive lines are the strengths of the team. The defensive backs return the most but the unit as a whole was not coached very well. House is now the defensive coordinator, so he has a lot to prove. The jury will be out on House.

  32. I'm so tired of hearing excuses for these coaches and all the issues Pitt has gone thru over the past few years. Simply look next door to Ohio State. A new coach after the previous coach was fired amid all kinds of accusations. At the time the program was reeling. Enter Meyer. New coaches, new scheme will the team buy into all this. The answer -12-0 first season. What's the difference better athletes better coaches maybe...
I love Pitt and suffered with them ever since Sherrill left but this program has flatlined. I see nothing to indicate an upward swing. Why must we always wait to see if the players buy into the system, let the coaches get some experience and then a 5-7 or 6-6 season. I think Pitt fans have been conditioned over the years and come to accept middle of the road team......

    1. Like high gas prices. They wear on you until you just accept it and stop complaining. I would say the "amateur hour" comment is spot on. This is like Pirates baseball in 2012. Every day something new comes out that makes you wonder if those in charge really have a clue.

Face it, Pitt isn't going to spend the money and they are more content getting a coach who won't be so quick to leave. 6-6 teams might be the norm (if we are lucky). The fact that Pitt didn't answer the calls to a big time recruit is just mind blowing.

This stuff is great for you blog owners. The traffic to the sites has to be insane

    2. There are absolutely huge problems in the football program right now, but it's silly to compare Pitt to Ohio State. The Buckeyes have been one of the premier programs in college football for a sustained period of time, have a much bigger alumni base, and more money. If our boosters and administrators were willing to pay for an Urban Meyer, I but we could do pretty well on the field too.

  33. I really think the rules of not calling a player is dumb, but they are the rules and Pitt to their credit follow the rules. So If PSU coach just happened to make contact, I would consider the integrity of the coaches in the program as a red flag. OSU is at another level than Pitt not going there. Oh by the way, I really don't care if Pitt gets another kid from the Quips. Let them go elsewhere and see how much fun that is to have family and supporters grow tired of driving three hours in traffic or paying 300 dollars for a hotel, plus food and travel costs back and forth. But go ahead and think the grass is greener. Pitt will be fine.

  35. Why don't you all go root for Alabama, Pitt will cannot and will not compete at the level you expect. They will not break the rules you have to now. Just accept it and move on. They could go 0-12 and Chryst will not be fired.
