Aaron Donald wins Bronco Nagurski Trophy

The great Aaron Donald won his first of maybe a few major awards tonight as the senior defensive tackle won the Bronco Nagurski Trophy. The award is given by the Football Writers Association of America, and the trophy goes to the best defensive player in the country.

  1. Congrats, AD! Congrats, PITT!!!!
How many people would blame House if he didn't win it?
    99% percent of you.

    1. House and Breckenfield deserve "Zero" credit.
      btw.
      Donald was a Wanny recruit.

    2. Ok then, I guess this coaching staff deserves "zero" blame for the mediocre play/players the last 2yrs? They were Wanny's recruits

    3. Anony 4:41.
Wait till next year. You won't be able to kick or blame Wanny anymore!!
      6-6

    4. Not blaming Wanny, loved Wanny but next year will be Fraud's guys, or lack thereof

    5. So, blame everyone else except Chryst. Forget Chryst 3 years of recruits and transfers. 2012, 2013, 2014.
      Ok. got it.

    6. Not blaming anyone, my friend... Just think it's silly to blame any one person for anything that goes wrong or right

    7. Donald would not be at Pitt if Chryst and company had to recruit him. I doubt they would have offered him given his size does not match their criteria

    8. Maverick,
You speaking with facts and 100% correct. Fields is too short also and he just committed to WVU. I'm not that bothered about Fields as I am Henry.

    9. Donald wouldn't have been at WVU, PSU, or any other BCS team either because NOBODY recruited him! We got lucky we found a diamond in the rough... That's what recruiting is all about... For every Dravon Henry you miss on, you hit on an Aaron Donald... So why cry about missing out on a 17 or 18 year old prospect... It's not worth the tears

    10. Aaron Donald wasn't a diamond in the rough. He dominated in HS.
He wasn't highly recruited due to height so don't come to the conclusion that AD wasn't elite in HS.
Missing on Henry is huge in so many ways.
I guess you are happy with mediocrity.

    11. Maybe people are forgetting that Coach Patterson, the D Coordinator at WVU is who pulled the trigger on Aaron Donald when he was at Pitt and had the Panthers ranked as the #3 defense in the nation.

    12. Not happy with mediocrity... I just don't think the sky is falling when we don't land a 17 yr old... And I don't blame our coaches for EVERY LITTLE THING that goes wrong... I'm willing to give the other guys credit when they land a recruit, make a good call or big play... It's not ALWAYS our coaches fault... I realize that

  2. Donald's mother cheered Hail to Pitt. Henry's mother posted on twitter. Which one is the better source of knowledge concerning Pitt?

  5. Congratulations Aaron! Well deserved.

Thank you for your outstanding play, and also for being an excellent representative for Pitt. I wish we had a dozen more like you.

You will be missed. Good luck in the NFL, or wherever life takes you.

  6. Well deserved award for a great young man, if we only had a handful more like him. To win the award on a 6-6 team speaks volumes about his performance

  7. Wow. Look at the comment numbers. You have this post about Pitt football that is great news and an awesome accomplishment for one of our players. 9 comments. Then you have the post about Henry picking WVU, someone that no one knows what type of player he'll truly be at the next level. 90posts bashing Pitt. We live in a negative world where the only thing that truly makes a lot of people happy is complaining about everything. There's so much to be thankful for.

  11. These are the days I'm proud to be a Panther. Congrats AD, hope we can get one more win for you.

  12. Congratulations to Aaron Donald! Truly an amazing performance throughout his college career. I'm not sure everyone truly fathoms the accomplishments and sheer will of his play this year as well. He can be proud of being a college graduate and always an exemplary teammate. This is a Pitt man if there ever was one. Hail to Pitt!

  13. Well done 97! I hope my analysis is wrong with regard to draft status a month or so ago. I see AD going in the 4th - 5th round. He has been a terrific performer and needs to be surrounded by great linemen at the next level. If so, I can see him blossoming into a Geno Atkins type. If not surrounded by some studs, I think he will struggle.

Good luck 97 and thank you for all the positives you have brought to the university and to the football program.

Speaking of DL, I am hoping that Jarrett, Soto and Render continue to improve. We do lack a violent presence along the back seven and I think that needs to change in order to be successful. If Nicholsen commits, he displaces Vinopal, game 1. Henry would have done that as well had he chosen Pitt.

When I hear a parent or a player say they felt real good about a position coach like Gibson, I shudder. House should not have gone alone. If it was a closing opportunity, it should have been Engram and Chryst. Engram could have closed the deal by saying I will have you work against the best receivers, every day. I know what it takes to get you to the next level because I have been there. Gibson, not so much. It will bubble to the top and perhaps they young man has a change of heart.

    2. People need to start looking at the Henry situation From another perspective...The staff and players sent many handwritten letters to Chris James in order to land him. But the effort to land Henry was lukewarm by the staff... What does that tell you? Last year the staff was willing to offer Boyd's pals in order to land him. Yet they weren't willing to do the same for Henry in order to land him. So what does that tell you? Henry's dad said that if Miami offered his son earlier, he'd be a Hurricane. Instead, he Blows offf Miami and commits to the coach who kissed his hand from the get go. Hmmmmm sounds to me we may have dodged a bullet....

  14. It was so much fun to watch AD play! I'm glad we get to see him wear the Pitt uniform one more time. I especially enjoy AD's success because he seems like such a humble, hard-working guy. Congrats!

  15. I have been critical of the staff in regards to recruiting. However the scenario you laid out Anonymous 11:31 has merit. At the very least it says that the staff didn't see him as a big time recruit, right or wrong. Time will tell, but I think any kid that is highly rated from Aliquippa needs to be a priority...
