Montae Nicholson to Michigan State

Bad news again for Pitt as Gateway S/WR Montae Nicholson chose the Spartans.  Nicholson has good size at 6'2" and 200 pounds. He also has very good speed and athleticism. His highly impressive offer list included Penn State, West Virginia, Ohio State, Florida State, Michigan, Oregon, Virginia Tech, Miami, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Stanford.

Yep, its the get along gang at Pitt. Everybody just feels good about each other and the goal is to finish 6-6 every year.. In fact we don't even recruit, we just offer and hope they come!!! Juice boxes for everyone!!

  4. Chris -
Acknowledging that Nicholson is just one guy -- albeit an incredibly talented one -- this seems like more evidence that this staff won't be able to get the job done. Is there any hope for Pitt football fans on the horizon? Or are we stuck with mid-budget coaches who will be safe picks that won't embarrass the administration?

If you were the AD for a day, what would (could?) you do to fix the situation assuming that Chryst is kept in place? ?

And looking at basketball, did we just get lucky on Dixon? I can't believe this gang actually had the foresight to realize he would be a top tier coach.

    2. I'm not highly upset that a GATEWAY kid decided not to come here. Those kids are more hype than talent, and that has been proven with the vast majority of them being flame outs at major D1 programs.

Pitt isn't going down the road you need to in order to become a major D1 program. To do that, you have to offer these kids more than whether you play press coverage vs. zone. Did anyone ever possibly think that when these kids (Henry and Nicholsen) were evaluated they thought maybe they couldn't? I would think coaches have a hell of a lot more insight into that than bloggers that follow HS kids. Nicholsen was offered the possiblity of playing on both sides of the ball at MSU, I'm sure he thinks his future may be as a WR, not a DB, and he may not like the competition he's facing at Pitt with the other kids they're recruitin

    3. You're joking about him not liking the competition at Pitt right? This can't be a real post.

  5. Matt House's Incompetence strikes again !!! he was the main recruiter on Henry and Nicholson and lost them both.

He is in over his head as a DC and sucks as a recruiter. And yet Chryst hired this fool who's main job in the NFL was a video jockey.

Unreal. And some wonder why Pitt never improves

If Pitt loses to Bowling Green, I can't see how House is retained.
Haering saved his job by landing Bookser although he didn't land Apke.

    2. When a potential recruit asks House if his corners give room or play close to the line of scrimmage, House would probably get defensive and challenge the kid to a fight!

      Delete
    3. If you want to be an NFL CB, you need to be able to play man to man, jam them off the line, etc. House is more zone and Tampa 2 defense. NFL teams that play that is because they don't have a good secondary or playmakers in the secondary.

    6. Mav,

I agree with most of your comments - however, the recruiting thing...I don't put all the blame on House. It was his job to get the recruit interested, which he did. I feel it's the head coaches job to close the recruit - so in this case, I blame HCPC and not House for losing.

      Delete
    7. You can add Todd Haley to that list too. Just because House didn't play in a major program or was a high level assistant doesn't mean he can't coach or for that matter recruit.

People are letting what comes out of the mouths of 18 year old kids and their parents that think he's their meal ticket dictate the direction of the program. Get real already!

      Delete
    8. Real is looking at results. The defense regressed this year, the style of play is not conducive to attracting strong recruits and the lack of recruiting success on defense can not be denied

      That is real

    1. Most analyst believed that Nicholson would choose Pitt because of the time he spent on campus. He went to at least 4 football games (free tickets), basketball games (free tickets) and the midnight madness basketball event. He then holds a press conference in his hometown to say he's leaving town, and oh by the way, Pitt wasn't in his top two (FSU & MSU) is it no wonder Pitt fans sour on a lot of the local kids????

      Delete
    2. I agree. I hate these press conferences, especially when a local kid announces he's not going to the local school. It makes me hate these press conferences even more.

      Delete
    3. I can understand if a kid calls a presser to announce he's going to Pitt, PSU, or WVU. But to call a presser to say your going outside of the area schools is baffling. If you are not playing for any of those schools, no one will give a flip after you're gone. You are an after thought? Does anyone keep up with Demiterius Cox besides his parents?

      Delete
  11. Here is a thought - no one (media) show up to these presser. They make a big deal out of them

    ReplyDelete
  12. It seems Pitt is doing OK recruiting offensive players, but is really struggling (to put it kindly) recruiting on the defensive side of the ball.

House just can't continue to miss on these local kids. If he does, Coach Chryst had better do some serious reassessment on his promotion of House to DC.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I understand a lot of people are upset about not being able to keep kids close to home. Maybe House is not the answer, although I will say that our defense has showed improvement and we have had much better competition this year than last.

I expected Montae to go to Mich. State. Look what they did on defense this year, it probably was a better decision for him. Once again the Panthers do not have nor are they going to get Urban Meyer or another coach who is magically going to recruit this team back to relevance in a year or two. They dug a hole and have to crawl their way out of it. Which is why Bookser and Grimm are much more important than Henry and Nichloson.

I don't expect Shai to commit to Pittsburgh tomorrow either. I don't know why people hold out hope on these guys who bring in a lot of attention to do commit. They want to be superstars, they want all the attention and Pitt is not a place right now that is great for that. It will be in the future if they keep the course, recruit lineman and build this team the right way.

Chris you can correct me if I am wrong, but losing Henry and Nicholson will open the door for Anthony Davis and Marques Dudley Gordon.

They are still in the top three for Kamara, and I haven't heard any reports that Jennings still isn't very high on Pitt.

If Shai decides to go to GA tech or Va Tech, CJ Leggett will likely become a Panther.

The Panthers can still close out a very nice recruiting class and lay some more bricks to a strong program.

    2. I agree we can still have a pretty good recruiting class. However, I agree with Chris that the program wi be mediocre or at best the same results under Harris and DW. We need a strong recruiter on the defensive side of the ball. All of our top recruits have been on the offensive side. Very Harris like class...

    3. A team needs multiple players at positions so missing on these kids will not open up anything it will simply put tremendous pressure on every other player that commits to become a big-time player. Also, I'm not sure what D you watched last year but the one I saw never made big plays and regressed from the year before.

      Delete
    4. They need depth so missing out on these kids hurts, and that is assuming some other kids actually commit. Right now they are thin at every defensive position. Also, what D are you watching? The one I saw this year regressed from last year and produced no big plays other than Donald, ranking near the bottom of the BCS in all big play stats. Imagine next year, the defense will be horrible.

Some folks like Weas never cease to amaze me. "Give Chryst a chance." This is his 3rd recruiting class - none have been great shakes. On the field he is 12-13. We have had 30 years of mediocre football - but hey he talks like a yinzer so lets go easy on him and not criticize him even though he has produced underwhelming results

Fact is he has not shown anything yet. He has made bad hires with a number of his assistant coaches, only hiring people he knows or is friends with.

He chased off the DC from the first year because he yelled. And replaced him with a highly unqualifed and inexperienced video jockey when there were two other much more qualified and experienced DC's dying to get the job.

His whole we don't recruit philosophy has proven itself to be a joke. Just look at all the kids who we sign who have no other major college offers. How the hell are we supposed to turn things around with these MAC level recruits

I fear we will lose to Bowling Green next week - and then next year, the defense will become even more of a joke now that Donald is gone. But Weas and the kool-aid drinkers will still be there talking about Pitt's tradition (even though that was over 30 years ago) and ignoring the problems with this coaching staff

    10. Let's all be realistic here for a second. If Nordy wanted a top flight program, PC is landing these kids because lets be realistic, these kids aren't being convinced to go to other schools just on name recognition. Big time college football is seedy at best if you want to play with the big programs, just look at what happened to Mack brown last week, that was completely booster driven, nothing else.

You want big time recruits, you have to have the money to pull them in. These 4 and 5 star kids are not going to school because they like the engineering program, they're going where it benefits them most to go.

  17. Did you check out Bookser's list? You may not have heard that he committed to Pitt last night. But then again, he didn't have a press conference either.... Question: when was the last time a local player had a press conference, announced he was going out of town, and went on to become a star player and lived up to their hype? Pryor? (although I will argue he was good, but did not live up to the hype of being the #1 recruit. He never made all-conference).

    3. Anonymous 5:25 - Not ridiculous at all and I'm sure Chris wil back me up on this. He was the number one, 5 star recruit in the country. He had TWO press conferences. The first one was to tell people he hadn't made up his mind! He comes to Ohio State and wins as many games in the three years he was there as the three previous years. He never made all-conference, in fact he wasn't MVP of his own team in the years he was there! He left OSU worse off than he did before he arrived.

He's only the starting QB for the Raiders because the other QB's suck worse than him. If he would have listened to DW and became a WR, he'd be an all-pro making more money. But he did it his way....

But there have to be things that smaller, less well-known schools due to have strong recruiting programs(community outreach, promotions, things done with local schools, etc.). Think it would be an interesting discussion on things you feel Pitt either needs to start doing, or do better?

I can understand it from the kid's standpoint because this may his last splash but why are all the adults so excited. As understand it we just lost the chance for the ACC title in four years because so and so chose another school other than Pitt. 1. John In South Carolina,

I believe Chris did an article similiar to what you are asking. It showed the success rate of the WPIAL players was higher when they went to Pitt versus going to other schools.

I am not a big fan of the local players, but I understand the importance of recruiting them. I believe a lot of them do not live up to the hype. I also think that the high school coaches and parents do not help matters at all. Some of the parents believe their kid is the next Joe Namath, and if their kid doesn't get playing time or is disciplined in some manner, it's automatically the coaches fault.

Frankly if I had a choice between landing a 4 star recruit outside of the WPIAL and a 4 start recruit from somewhere else, I know which one I would prefer.... The players that are excited about coming to Pitt (Amara, James, Ollison) are outside the area. It is what it is....

    2. Aaron Donald seemed excited about coming to Pitt and he was local. Also after the public relations job that Pitt did with Aaron's body of work this year one has to wonder if some of these kids just wanted to go to school outside of Pittsburgh. Still cannot understand going to WVU though, that was a head scratcher. Holgorsen is not exactly known for his defense.

Pitt doesn't need a great record in order to persuade kids (especially local) to come to Pitt. All they need to do is point at all the freshman and sophomores starting. Their inability to lock down these kids leads me to believe they are just very poor recruiters. All these kids coming out of high school believe they should immediately be starters. They have all been at the top of their leagues since pop warner. The thought of starting right away in the ACC should be very appealing. So questions remain: What is Pitt selling? Why aren't they closing? Unlike Foster from last year, it didn't seem like Henry and Nicholson were very too upset to leave home.

      Wanny Chryst

Proposterous that some WV Bloggers on here think that the first class that signed was Chryst's. Obviously they don't understand that most kids start getting recruited in the 8th or 9th grade and the relationship is formed at that time. Idiots, but I am sure they mean well.

Is this a WVU Blog? Typically WV bloggers complain about Pitt only a fraction more than alleged Pitt bloggers do. It is good that Pitt is going to the little Caesars extra cheese bowl to accommodate all the whining.

If you all want change, make enough money to be a big time donor and then demand it. If you don't have the cash, you don't have standing for the bash. As the emperor says....the player's that aren't here can go on to their life's work. Paul Chryst will add to that very shortly and say....and don't come back. Absent family circumstances, I love the guy saying you snubbed me once....hit the road. That is why Shell is in WV. He may do well there and gain a bunch of yards. Actually, he will do well on the field but that doesn't necessarily equate to future success. The nfl doesn't put alot of stock in running backs in the draft. You have to prove yourself first. Look at Trent Richardson. The nfl gm's learned another example from that draft choice.

Pitt will be fine. Have a little patience folks and by all means keep whining. It looks real good to have people who profess to have graduated from such a high esteemed university to be a bunch of babies. We are soft!

His quarterbacks where Tino, Stull, and Palko who he inherited, played worse under Wanny, can not call somebody a great recruiter if they fail to bring in a top prospect for the most important position on the field. I know, Wanny will always have 13 - 9, the sad part is twenty years from now that is all Pitt Fans will still have, cause why would top talent come to Pitt?

  24. Hi Chris,

Whether Pitt ends up 6-7 (for the second year in a row) or 7-6, they certainly (arguably) couldda/ shouldda done better. The OL, defense and special teams are mostly to blame, IMO, especially in losing to Navy and North Carolina. Win those two games and we're going to a decent bowl, instead of Detroit in December.

With that background, do you think Paul Chryst will be under any pressure to do something? I'd love to see Pitt sack House and hire a DC with bona fides, and finally hire a real special teams coach. Rhetorical: Dating back to Wanny, how many big bowl games is Pitt willing to throw down a rat hole before they do something to quit losing games on special teams?

And will HCPC enter the 2014 season on the proverbial hot seat, especially if we end up with a 6-7 record again?

    2. Alas the local media is a joke.

Chris Peak is on Pitt's payroll. He is EJ's puppet

      Sam Werner is disappointing.

      Jerry Dipaula - meh

Are these guys afraid they will lose access / inside info if they are critical?

    3. Mav,
If you think about it, the local media covering Pitt is no different that the local media that covered PSU.
They heard the rumors at PSU but didn't follow up. Just looked the other way.
      Pittsburgh local media is pathetic.
Jared Shanker of ESPN has some nice quotes!!!
"bottom line ill take highly rated recruits vs not highly rated under assumption staff can develop them"
"Whether Pitt gets Shai McKenzie, the damage is done to the Panthers' 2014 class having missed on Dravon Henry and Montae Nicholson."
