Have the Panthers hired a new Strength and Conditioning coach?

According to coachingsearch.com, the Panthers will hire Ross Kolodziej as their new strength and conditioning coach? The 35-year old Kolodziej played at Wisconsin (naturally), and was a defensive tackle in the NFL for seven years.  He's never been a strength and conditioning coach (again, naturally).

  1. On the Pitt Panther Athletic website, he is listed in the directory as "Assistant S&C".
    1. Wisky ties (played when Chryst was at Wisky)
    2. No S&C experience or education. (But hey, Chryst promoted the video guy to DC)
I hope its a temporary position to replace Beckerfield soon.

    1. How does he not have any S&C experience if he was an "Assistant S&C" coach?

    2. He doesn't. He is listed in Pitt directory already as "Assistant S&C". That is a new entry to the directory.
His last position for the past year is GA for Wisky.
Look it up! Under Performance Team.

    3. Got it. I was under the impression he was already at Pitt as an assistant.

    4. He was an assistant S&C coach at Pitt for 2013 (1yr experience under the tutelege of Rice the yoga instructor) according to Pitt Blather who is going nuts with this hire/promotion.

  2. Can't really complain about this hire until we find out what his S&C philosophy is.

Don't want to get too deep into it but if his focus is going to be on explosive power and rapid recovery then I'd say thats a good thing.

If he has whole workout sessions dedicated to the Warrior Stance.. He should be teaching yoga to soccer moms.

    1. He doesn't have an S&C philosophy because he never had an S&C job nor educated in exercise physiology. I think Marketing major undergrad.

  4. Chris,

Get the point that Ross Kolodziej does not have a resume as a S&C Coach.

On the other hand, Todd Rice had the “perfect” resume on paper and according to Andrew Taglianetti was “incompetent.”

Keep in mind that Kolodziej was a Two-Time Captain at Wisconsin which tells you he knows something about leadership and putting in the work.

This is also a guy who was invited to the NFL Combine and later drafted.

Looking at Kolodziej numbers from the NFL Combine... granted his bench was not overly impressive with 25 reps of 225.

But everything else suggests as a Defensive Lineman… this guy was pretty athletic which says he might know something about conditioning.

    1. I know a lot about S&C, that doesn't make me qualified to be an S&C coach for a BCS football team.

    2. Just about anyone can learn the techniques used for Strength and Conditioning. I’m sure there are loads of conferences S&C Coaches can attend and books to read.

But the one thing you can’t necessarily learn is how to be a MOTIVATOR.

If Kolodziej is truly dedicated to S&C and able to motivate kids to push themselves… then he’ll probably get results.

One thing for sure, young players will RESPECT him due to the fact that he’s been there and done it… especially the Combine and the NFL.

With that alone… he’s got an edge going in... even without the resume.

    3. You're stretch so far that you're going to snap in half. You clearly have no conception of what it takes to be a professional strength and conditioning coach. They just don't hire big guys who played in the NFL. They're professionals who learn their craft and go to school for it.

      Delete
    4. Will Chryst ever hire personnel with previous, you know, experience? Or is he just hiring his buddies?

      Delete

    5. Chris,

Am I stretching a bit on this one? Ya.

But, this is not the same as the House situation as you've tried to couch it. Similar, but not the same.

House was not only lacking experience as a Coach, he never played College Football. At least with Kolodziej you have a guy who has some credentials.

I'm well aware that S&C is a profession. My point did not discount that fact. However, my point is based on the fact that obviously having the "perfect" resume isn't everything, as we've learned with Todd Rice.

If Kolodziej does indeed get the job, I'm giving Chryst the benefit of a doubt that maybe there are things we don't know about Kolodziej's experience and abilities in the area of Strength and Conditioning.

What we do know is that Kolodziej likely is an asset to a College Football Lockerroom... maybe as a Defensive Coordinator (ha, ha).

  7. Yet another ridiculous, unqualified, incestuous hire by Chryst. Ugh.

Chryst's hire's just get funnier and funnier.

  8. Wow this board amazes me. You constantly need something to complain about.

As a person who has trained D1 athletes, played college sports and basically lived in the gym for the last 18 years, I will give a little insight.

There are S and C coaches that have all the knowledge in the world and their passive nature make them horrible at the job despite a great resume.

I don't know what this guy does or does not know, but getting results sometimes is better with a motivational guy rather than a know it all.

Wisconsin has a history of strong players. They also have a history of getting the most out of their players. I don't understand why people are so against this. So far PC has made steps in changing this team into a harder working team, maybe just maybe he knows what he is doing in this position.

    1. The fact that he fired the last guy he hired for the position kinda proves that he maybe he doesn't know what he's doing when hiring these guys.

    2. Good answer Chris.
Everyone knew Rice was a bad choice as S&C.

    3. What Chris said. Chryst hired the previous bum. Look at the history of his hires - over half have been very questionable to downright not good. He is afraid to go outside the small circle of people he knows. Do you think any major college program in the country would have hired this neophyte as their S&C coach, High School Haering as their LB coach, can't recruit a lick Inoke as their DL coach or video jockey House as their DC?

  10. Currently the 39 best recruiting class
    2013 35
2012 47(Losing shell, the Davis twin and Rippy because of coaching turmoil probably puts it in the 70s but that is more Todd G leaving than anything)
    2011 59th
2010 33(but a considerably worse recruiting class than this year)
    2009 47th
    2008 28th(with very little depth)
    2007 26th
    2006 21
    2005 38th with a horrible recruiting class(no 5 stars, 1 4 star and 11 3 stars)
    2004 74th
    2003 34th(no 5 or 4 stars)
    2002 39th

When in gods name do all these people who think Paul C is a bad recruiter think we actually were bringing in talent?

If you go by the rivals recruiting points(which is by no means a scientific, but does give a little bit of an idea) Chryst has had 2 of the top 3 recruiting classes in the past 12 years. Doing all of this when the program was quite frankly a joke, and not a desirable place to come. So who is it that everyone is comparing him to that they think he isn't doing a good job?

Pitt used to get enough talent to compete in the Big East which was the laughing stock of the BCS. They will need better recruiting going forward to compete against FSU, Miami and Clemson, but that wont come until the team on the field plays better. They frankly overachieved this year with a bunch of freshman and a QB who was playing in his first year in a system.

Yet people still sit there and rip them on recruiting and ask the question..."is the writing on the wall for PC?". I think he is a good year away from an extension rather than being let go. And with the talent he has as Jrs. and Srs., this should be a very difficult year. I expect however for him to still to have a better year than he did last year.

Lets go ahead and step back off the ledge. Panther fans sound worse than Philly fans anymore. We have gone through a tough time with the coaching changes we had. We are finally starting to look better and people want to bitch bitch bitch.

    1. Not including Troy, who has only three recruits, Pitt is No. 45 on Rivals and 12th out of the 14 ACC teams. Only Syracuse and Boston College are lower. Penn State is 21st and WVU is 39th.

    2. Perhaps you should look again. Pitt is 39th, PSU 22nd and WVU 43rd. Currently Pitt is 8th in the ACC.

    3. Do we have to go through this every time? I use stars per recruit because who knows what silly formula Rivals uses.

    4. Anony 3:47: You, my friend, is what is wrong with Pitt fans. You always think next year is our year. Unfortunately as long as SP is at the helm this program will never take a step forward. If your expectations are to play in mid to low tier bowls than you have the right coach.

I look at programs around the country in similar situations doing far more than what Pitt has done over the last decade. That's my gauge. Those are my expectations.

    ReplyDelete
  14. So he's unknown? There are tons of good S&C coaches out there who are unknowns even to a guy like me who's tuned into the S&C community.

    So stop panicking.

If it turns out he wants his guys to do plyometric wind sprints for 4 hours a day followed up by unicyling then you can panic.

But if he starts putting big guys under a squat rack and telling them to explode into the lift.. then you can breath a sigh of relief.

    2. You don't need a degree in sports science to be a good S&C coach.

Just like you don't need a degree in Computer science to be a good systems administrator.

If you knew anything about S&C you'd know that.

Degrees are just pieces of paper (OH NO SOMEONE SAID SOMETHING BAD ABOUT MY COLLEGE DEGREE! Butthurt incoming)

Knowledge, philosophy, and training style are whats important in S&C. You can get that simply by being trained properly.

    3. LOL Hurriquake.
So anyone can teach high school calculus. How about anyone can teach high school chemistry. I'm not even talking college level.
Sorry, the guy has NO credentials to be hired as an S&C coach for a BCS team.
Let me ask another, what other team would even hire him with his credentials??? Let me answer. NONE. Not even FCS division.

      Delete
    4. You don't need a degree to know chemistry or how to do calculus, nor do you need one to be able to teach is successfully.

You laugh, but homeschooled kids who's parents don't have degrees in education are outperforming public school kids who are taught by people with degrees.

When we know more about this guy, or whomever else gets the job, then make your decision. Never judge before everything is known for to do so is to make an uninformed decision.

  16. I think the most important hire that will affect Pitt Athletics, especially the football program, will be the new chancellor. The House hire last year, no special teams coach and now another "head scratching," of a hire in their new S&C coach...hopefully the new chancellor will see the importance of a great football program, as in all the $$ it will bring into the university...i said to my wife last night, "can you imagine if Pitt ever gets their act together and we're at the National Championship game? How amazing will that be." She turned to me and said, "never going to happen." It can if the right people are in charge...Chris, is there anything we can do as fans to influence the hire of the chancellor? are the Golden Panthers involved? Is there any hope to end the string of mediocrity? I don't see why Pitt can't be prominant on the national stage like Stanford...and Pitt doesn't need to have such a weak non conference schedule to get to 7 wins...the admin makes it very difficult to continually root for Pitt when they prove it's not a priority for them with hires like this last one...

  17. Who is Brian Calhoun? Sounds like another Wisc. player turned Asst. S&C coach. Ross is listed as an assistant not head S&C coach. Not really sure what a Head S&C is compared to Asst S&C. Maybe they can coach Special teams too.

  20. Normally I wouldn't care so much about such a position but Chryst's out of left field hires have ranged from suspect to disasters thus far, and since this is another out of left field hire it's obviously going to make some worry that Chryst continues to make unusual hires. Enough of those that don't pan out and he may not have enough strengths to overcome them.
