Pittsburgh 74 NC State 62

While it didn't look like it was going to be this way at first, Pitt's first game in the ACC will forever go down as a huge success. Some thoughts:

1.  The veterans, especially seniors Lamar Patterson and Talib Zanna, did not start well. but they finished great, especially Patterson who is looking more and more like an All-American candidate.

2.  Patterson finished with 22 points, including 8-16 from the field, 2-6 from three, and 4-6 from the line.  He also added 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals.

3.  Zanna chipped in with 15 points, 9 rebounds (including 6 offensive), 2 steals, and a block.

4.  Mike Young started slowly and was being outplayed by Jamel Artis but he came to life just as the rest of the team did. He had 13 points, including 4-4 from the line. He's now shooting 85.7% from the line this year.

5.  Cameron Wright was just 4-12 from the field but chipped in with 9 points and excellent defense in the second half, including 3 steals.

6.  James Robinson struggled offensively but was excellent defensively and had two big buckets bear the end of the game.  He had 4 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and no turnovers.

7.  Artis and Josh Newkirk kept Pitt in the game early before the veterans took over.  Artis had 6 points and a rebound in 17 minutes while Newkirk had 5 points, a rebound, and an assist in 14 minutes.

8. The Panthers hot horribly at the beginning of the game but through transition offense in the second half they eventually shot 48.1% from the field.

9.  The Panthers played great defense in the second half and for the game NC State shot only 39.3% from the field.

10.  The Panthers were out rebounded 35-29 in the game.

  1. Unreal that a guy like Artis ( a 3-star nobody ) can come in and contribute. Ditto for Newkirk. Young isn't as much of a surprise, but his consistency is. That is coaching. Period.

Give it up big time for Cam Wright. Total and complete shut-down of Warren in the second half. Those long arms are a bitch.

    1. wright has some of the quickest hands ive seen. watching newkirk and barber go at eachother was fun, two extremely fast pg's. Patterson came up big time and it was a very nice win. zanna may finally have his breakout year and he will be a big key for pitts success this year

  3. 1. Down 15, and winning by 12....however i was listening to a stretch on the radio where they missed a bunch of layups and fastbreaks. This could have easily been a 30 point victory for Pitt even after being down by 15. Good work to turn it up in the second half.

    2. Why I love this team. Wright didn't have a great shooting night, but what he hurts offensively, he makes up on the D end. This is the MO of Pitt for years and this team is no different. They lost to Cincy on a night when they looked horrible on the offensive end. However they only lost by one point because of defense and foul shooting. It makes it so enjoyable to watch a team who gives themselves a fighting chance in every game even when they aren't playing their best.

    3. The Cincy team who we lost to by one point on an awful game just beat 18 Memphis by double digits. Wonder if our comeback at a decent NC State game, coupled with the big win by Cincy will get us into the top 25 this week.

  4. Kamara committed to Virginia. On Scout, hhe said because Henry and Nicholson didn't go to Pitt, he removed them from the top of his list. Another top recruit missed out on.

    1. That is interesting.
Why would 2 players on defense affect his decision.
I could see if it was some player on offense or QB but that comment is a headscratcher.

      Delete
    2. I agree Anon 4:40. It is a headscratcher? If he was listening to those 2, why did he pick VA and not WVU or MSU?

      Delete
    3. Make no mistake, Kamara made his commitment based on a girl and his friends at UVA. He was a long shot all along, kudos to Engram for having Pitt in the mix.

    4. Hopefully we get Jennings from NJ. ESPN (but not Rivals or Scout) rates him higher than Kamara. Maybethat will turn out to be the case in the end.

    5. @anonymous 440

I'm assuming he didn't want to be the only 4* skill player in his class. With Kamara Nicholson Henry and McKenzie, that's 4 4* skill players to go along with 2, 4* OL. That would change our class dramatically.

    6. James is a 4* and a good get for RB.
Maybe Kamara sees the writing on the wall for Chryst?

    7. James is a 4* on one site. Most sites have James ranked as a 3* guy.

    8. Anonymous 6:07- I am kind of surprised at your statement "Maybe Kamara sees the writing on the wall for Chryst?" I am not trying to be a troll and I don't want to assume what your views are, but there are at least two things wrong with your statement. First, what inside information might Kamara have that he would see the writing on the wall for Chryst when he just won a bowl game and had several records set by individuals this season? Second, if he sees the writing on the wall for Chryst, who even if he were on the hot seat would likely have two more seasons before he would be fired, then why would he commit to Virginia? Their coach is coaching for his job next season. He has been a disaster and their team is abysmal. Their WR coach just left the team (shouldn't be good news for a 4* WR recruit). And despite their great recruiting class, it seems really likely that Virginia will be searching for a coach a year from now.

    9. writing on the wall for chryst? pitt had a winning record for the first time in years this year and the improvement in the effort they put forth on the field was noticeable.

    10. @Anon 7:23...I'm not surprised at all to see some anti-Chryst Kool Aid drinkers (and you know who you are), make a statement that a recruit sees "writing on the wall".

Pitt just had a bowl game win, and finished the season on a positive note, yet some fools desperately find any reason to denigrate Chryst.

I'm still skeptical as to whether he's the long-term answer, but to write that some recruit sees "writing on the wall" about him is pathetic.

    11. 6 wins in regular season 3 years in a row does not make for improvement and 6-6 in regular season is considered .500 and quite frankly not good. Please don't say they went to a bowl game when nearly 70% of teams go to bowl games so that isn't special.

I would think Kamara wants to stay close to home if there are coaching changes.

      Delete
    12. You folks are seriously ill. 3-star… 4-star… Did no one watch the ball game yesterday?? Newkirk was a "3-star". Was there a special foul called when he went around that 4-star Barber for a hoop? GET A LIFE!!!

      Delete
    13. @Anon 8:17 am...Chryst is not responsible for the last 3 years, because he's only been here for 2.

Despite there being a good many bowl games, Pitt still won theirs to finish on an up note going into next year. It doesn't necessarily mean next year will be good, but it's better to finish on a winning note.

If there's not improvement in the next couple years, Chryst will be in trouble, but there's no "writing on the wall" just yet.

    14. Need I remind you Anony 12:41, Pitt beat a MAC team in the bowl game.
      Please.
Seems you enjoy and accept mediocrity.

      Delete
    15. Anony 1:21 - Yes Pitt beat a MAC team in the bowl, but that's better than your WVU/PSU did...

      Delete
    16. @ Anon 1:21...Nothing could be further from the truth. I don't accept or enjoy mediocrity, in myself or others. I want the Pitt program to do much better than a .500 record, and beat MAC teams in bowls.

I was simply pointing out that the argument about recruits wavering because of Chryst being on the hot seat now is misguided. The Adonis Jennings commitment to Pitt is some evidence of that.

The bowl win, while not against a great opponent, was a good win for the program to end the season on a positive note, and may help with recruiting.

Due to the recent coaching carousel, Chryst is safe for the time being because another dismissal would cause even further problems with recruiting. The argument that the "writing is on the wall" just doesn't hold water, at least for now.

In time, that may prove true, but now is not that time.

  5. I wish our Admin would schedule better non conference foes for both FB and basketball....it's a disgrace...look at the football non conference next year; FLA international, Akron and Deleware...Petersen is a joke who can't leave soon enough....

Dixon's a great coach, people whowere ripping on him last year need to get a clue...

    2. Great call, that changes everything!! With a perennial power like Iowa included, next year's non conference schedule is quite daunting!!! Thank you Steve Perderson for not being intimidated with scheduling a tough non conference opponents!! I hope you can sense the sarcasm...I'm sure that scheduling WVU and PSU every year wouldn't excite fans and players alike..maybe throw in a UCLA, Arizona, Oregon, Alabama, etc every few years would be too bold...COME ON PITT ADMIN, GROW A SET!!!!!!

    3. Anony 4:22.
If they did that, Pitt wouldn't get to 6 wins to go to some bogus bowl game to play a MAC school. ;)
Pitt needs some gimmes on the schedule.

    4. You set the match ups a few years in advance... No way to know who's going to be good or bad 5 years down the road... Please stop acting like you know it all... It's dumb

  6. Great win! As bad as we played in the first half, we were just the complete opposite in the second half. Especially since there was a Pitt recruit that we were figuring was a lock, they ended up signing with NC State! I remember Lennard Freeman, BeeJay Anya and I think that there was a "fifth year Senior" (his name escapes me) that all went with NCST.
Speaking of BeeJay - wow what a BIG guy. There was a time in the 1st half at the free throw line where BeeJay was standing next to Talib - what a difference. BeeJay probably had at least 75 lbs on Talib!

  7. Agree with John Ranella's comments at the beginning. Luv the spark that Artis and Newkirk always seem to provide ...luv even more that Jamie isn't reluctant to use them

  8. Very entertaining game and a huge win to start the real season. This team needs to keep up the stifling defense and continue to speed up the pace.

  9. I'm still waiting to see coaching changes at Pitt.
If there are changes, betcha they wait until after LOI day. Similar to waiting after LOI day to name a DC. That is Chryst being close to the vest.

  12. amazing how the post by chris is about a quality hoops win and people manage to hijack it into a "pitt football program is doomed and everyone should be fired" thread.

  13. keep an eye on what is happening with Charlie Strong and Texas. Louisville, an elite program since Strong took over, will be searching for a new head coach as they enter the ACC. Personally, I'd take Louisville over Maryland any day, but for the overall well-being of the ACC, let's hope Louisville hits another HR in their coaching search.

  14. Something GOOD yesterday… maybe something REALLY GOOD today.

Adonis Jennings… wide receiver New Jersey… reportedly could commit to a school during tonight’s Semper Fi All American Game on Fox Sports. And Pitt is one of his favorites.

    Here’s a quick look if you haven’t seen him. A little “Megatron-ish”.

  15. A commmitment by Jennings will make Kamara an afterthought.

No comparison. Kamara a strong, but not the most athletic or fast receiver.

Jennings… two or three inches taller… at least a tenth faster in the forty. And did I say a little “Megatron-ish?”

He originally committed to Rutgers in the fall. But my understanding is he IMMEDIATELY de-committed after attending Pitt's win against Notre Dame.

A little POSITIVE THINKING might be in order.

  16. The reason Golden didn't take PSU job.
Look at his 2014 recruiting class. 12 - 4/5 star recruits. Top 10 class. He could never do that at PSU.
He will return Miami to a Top 5-10 program something he can't do at PSU.
