Panthers land an in-state linebacker

The Panthers got their third in-state prospect, and like the other two, he's very good. Kevin Givens, a 6'3' and 237 pound linebacker from Altoona HS picked the Panthers today. I was literally just watching tape of him late last night and thinking that he's much better than I had originally thought. The most obvious thing about Givens is that unlike a lot of Pitt linebackers in the recent past he's actually linebacker size already. In fact he's pretty lean at nearly 240 pounds. There's even been talk that he could grow out of the position, but I'm sure that Pitt will do everything they can to keep him at linebacker. He also has good speed and explosion. His only other offers thus far were Temple and western Michigan, but don't be fooled by that. He was coming on strong and would have had bigger offers. He's considered to be in the 11-15 range in the state at the moment.

  1. Really good get, a bunch more defensive players to come I hope. Chris take a look at Trevor Morris (LB) hudl tape, kid was at JR day but has no offer. Would be a steal.

  3. Great pick-up for Pitt! We need some more defensive recruits. Do you think Nick Bowers could end up at LB too? What do you see as our biggest position of need next year Chris? Besides a QB or two.

    2. I think mclean, miller, and cooper are gone. Better shot at guys like Gordonier, Holland, Allen, Hart and Morris.

I actually do care because position coaches are a huge part of the recruiting team. You see a lot of players switch commits when a position coach leaves. So yeah, it does matter.

  8. Welcome to Pitt Kevin, and good luck to you.

Maybe James Franklin should dominate his own backyard before he talks about dominating the state.

    1. He said dominate for elite prospects. This guy is ONLY a 3* on rivals. I kid.

    2. PSU's argument is that they only target 4star+.
It's a quality not quantity argument. They want the Top 5-10 PA players.
In comparing PSU to Pitt, they will only compare where both teams offered the player.
Therefore, PSU's scorecard of PA players is:
      PSU - 1, Pitt - 0

    3. Yeah Franklin's only after elite prospects like 2 star jarvis miller that just committed...

Every team signs 3 star guys even Alabama.

    4. Yeah, I get the PSU mentality, but Chris wrote that the kid was in the 11-15 range in the state, so that seems like a kid Penn State would be interested in.

I just found it funny that an Altoona kid picked Pitt after what Franklin said. Talk is cheap.

    5. For what it's worth, Penn State was interested in Givens, but hadn't offered yet as he had yet to meet Franklin.

I'd call it a win for Pitt.

  9. Unlike James Conner, it's clear that Givens is strictly a Defensive Player at the next Level. Although it is a GOOD SIGN that he's athletic enough to show well for himself at Runningback.

Already weighing in at 235... my guess is you're going to see Givens at Rush End and not Linebacker. That's where his H.S. Coach says he's best anyway.

  10. No one had the slighrest idea I was being facetious? Really, guys? Man, lighten up. Matt House is the DC. Why would PC hire him as WR coach? I
t was a joking reference to the 4 months long House in-house hire. Tools!
