Panthers win in huge way in first round

It's nice to win in the tournament and not even break a sweat, but at least for the fans that's how it went down as the Panthers beat Colorado 77-48.  And if possible it wasn't that close.  The Buffaloes were terrible and the Panthers were excellent.  No other way to say it.

Talib Zanna led all scorers with 18 points, including 6-7 from the field and 6-6 from the line. He also had 5 rebounds, 2 blocks, and a steal.  Cameron Wright had 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals. Point guard James Robinson only had 3 points but he also had 6 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 steals. Star Lamar Patterson was relatively quiet with 10 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and a block.

The Panthers also shot 50.8% from the field, made 11-12 FTs, and 3 turnovers to Colorado's 17 turnovers.

  1. Lets be honest I picked Florida to win in the 2n round and win it all but I would glad to crumble up my bracket for a Pitt win!! Went with my head instead of my heart. H2P!! Go get it Pitt!!!

  2. Florida having a tougher time but starting to pull away late. We should be a little fresher and every little bit will be necessary to overcome FL and its home crowd.

  3. Awful quiet around here when people can't complain about Dixon.

  4. I think this was Dixon's first win over a higher seed. And Pitt's first win over a higher seed since who knows when (maybe the 70s???).

Anyway, Colorado was extremely awful. It's easy to shoot 50% when you're getting layups all day. Looking forward to going up against the #1 team. It should be a relatively close game, as most Pitt's games are close (well, except for this one).

    Go Pitt!

    1. As I stated on twitter, that's a highly irrelevant stat. Dixon only had three chances. One was an 8/9 game and two were 2/3 games.

  6. Has Zanna been on PEDs the last 2 weeks?

  7. C'mon people…there must be SOMETHING to complain about. How about: "Dixon made the team score too much and now Florida won't take us lightly."

  8. more needs to be made of the outstanding quote by cam wright after the game. “The Univ of Pittsburgh is never intimidated by anyone. Not in academics. Not in basketball. Not in football. Not in anything." for a college kid, this is special no matter what happens tomorrow

    1. As soon as he said it yesterday I wrote on twitter that Pitt should make it a plaque and put it at the Pete.

  9. I've been very vocal regarding Dixon and his tactics since last year's disappointment. However, this team continues to improve and that's all you can ask for. They made the tournament despite players graduating, transferring and leaving for the NBA. I remember this season looked bleak before they hired back Slice and added a few pieces late (Artis, Uchebo, etc.). Dixon has gotten more aggressive recruiting this season so I think Pitt is trending up. I would rank this season as a success despite tomorrow's outcome vs. FLA. Personally think Pitt will be better next season as well.

  10. Chris, how better is florida than cuse? We almost beat cuse as #1. What are your 3 keys to victory?

  11. One of the keys to the Florida game is just to be able to keep it close all the first half. The longer we can keep the game close the more it works to our favor. Florida had a small scare yesterday but easily overcame it. They may think they can do the same thing against us. It may not be a bad thing if we go in at half time down but by 4 or less and then come out the 2nd half with a run.

  12. The thing i'm really concerned about is the press. Florida likes to press all game and if pitt turns the ball over it could be a long day.

  16. Chris, I am a big Dixon supporter, but for the love of God, please quit pointing to Pitt's 25-10 record this year as a "positive." The record is "false" due to an embarrassingly poor out-of-conference schedule. I remember all to well the "Ralph Willard," era, so I don't call for Dixon to resign, but please quit pointing to his overall record this year as support for him, it's a lame attempt.

    1. I could list all of their accomplishments that shows they were a good team this year but when people already have their mind made up.

    2. I agree they were good, but that 25 win maek is very deceiving...had they played a decent non conference, they'd probably have 20, 21 wins...I could NOT figure out their game plan today, take the shot clock down to 7 before running the offense? Don't push the ball in transition? Very confusing...

  17. Granted, Pitt didn't show up at all in the second half, a lot of people tend to forget that we just lost to the #1 overall seed. JRob looked overwhelmingly overmatched offensively and defensively. We accomplished a lot more than most people thought we would this year. This loss hurts that much more bc of how great we played in the first game.

  18. we got beat by a better team plain and simple. Nothing to be ashamed about great season

  19. As bad as Colorado played Thursday, that's how good Florida was today. Especially in the second half. The point guard was amazing, and they were stronger overall. Pitt was overmatched and eventually gave in. That was the best team Pitt played all year.

  20. Chris, how close was Pitt in landing kane? I am thinking we had him committed then last second we chose to go in a different direction why is that?

    1. It's my understanding that he would have come to Pitt if they wanted him. Dixon flirted with the idea but he was afraid that he was a cancer. He was that at Marshall. Drove Tom Herion crazy. Fred Hoiberg is great with kids like that. Dixon not so much. Probably would have been a disaster. But then again sometimes you need to take a chance. I've always been torn.

  21. Kane recently stated he was not big on the Style of offense at Pitt. I heard that is why he choose elsewhere. K thought I heard him say that in recent email. If we are not creating turnovers and running and playing our halfcourt offense it is pretty boring against solid opposition.

    1. Kane changes his reason all the time. He's trying to save face. Pitt 's style has nothing to do with recruiting. Most of the top programs run a similar style.

    2. Sounds like a certain local football recruit who decided to go to WVU because of Pitt's defensive style. Chris is right; it's about a local kid trying to save face.

You cannot possibly still be uptight about Henry going to WVU.
