Looking at the recruiting history of Rasheen Davis

The recruiting history of Rasheen Davis, who many Pitt fans think should be considered as a possible replacement for departed Barry Rohrssen.

Xavier:

Myles Davis- A kid Pitt recruited and considered one of the best high school shooters in the country. Cousin of Brandin Knight.  Ineligible during his first season. Averaged 5.3 ppg this season.

Manhattan:

Chris Thomas- Went to four different high schools, but still didn't graduate so he went to a community college to get his degree. Originally committed to Xavier by Davis, but then switched to Manhattan when Davis did. But he never played there because Manhattan decided despite his lofty talent they didn't want to keep him after he got arrested for driving without a license and then going to jail after being tested for marijuana (he also was a terror on the court with his technical fouls and verbal outbursts). Ended up at Marshall with Tom Herrion, who told him he would give him one chance but that he'll be hard on him. For last season at least it seemed to work as he averaged 12.7 ppg and has done well at the school.

Rich Williams- Other offers from Duquesne, Canisius, Kent State, St. Bonaventure, and St. Peters. Averaged 4.4 ppg as a freshman.

Carlton Allen- Manhattan was his only offer. He averaged 0.3 ppg as a freshman.

Tyler Wilson- Other offers were Canisius, Marist, Eastern Illinois, and UT-Arlington. Averaged 2.1 ppg as a freshman.

Samson Usilo- Nigerian from Brooklyn has offers from Canisius, Hofstra, Niagara, Quinnipiac, St. Bonaventure, and St. Peters.

Samson Akilo- Fellow Nigerian, teammate, and best friend of Usilo. He had no other offers.

Calvin Crawford- Going to prep school for a year. Had offers from Canisius, Quinnipiac, LIU-Brooklyn, and Binghampton.

  1. I haven't been paying that much attention, but I think Pitt is in a position to do much better than that. Perhaps a more seasoned, high-level recruiter?

  2. I sense you, correctly, do not think much of Mr. Davis. Hopefully these same folks that think highly of Mr. Davis are not also pushing for an Ashton Gibbs sighting on the Pitt bench.

  3. I'd take Davis as a replacement for Barton any day, but if he replaced Rohrssen it's a step down for the program. As for Gibbs that's so stupid that I don't even address it.

    1. Chris,

So, is there a chance we'll see Tom Herrion as a replacement for Rohrssen and Rasheen Davis replacing Barton?

Or is that asking too much of Pitt?

    2. I could see it possibly happening. I'm sure both want to end up at Pitt, especially Davis. He loves it at Pitt.

  4. Doke, when you say many Pitt fans think this guy should be hired ... remember, most of us only take our lead from what we read on blogs and tweets. You are very knowledgeable on all things Pitt ... aside from Herrion, who I know you are high on, is there anyone else you would like to see hired?

(I know you're not high on Cox either)

He is not a heavy hitter. He is equal to Knight and Barton. We don't need another "yes" man.

  15. Pitt has 3 commits for the 2015 class and is currently ranked 7th in the ACC and 53rd in the nation. We finish 7-6 with a bowl victory

Sterling Jenkins, #1 player in the WPIAL and arguably the state, will be committing to Penn State tonight. They went 7-5 with no Bowl Game last year or this year. After tonight they will be ranked #1 in the nation for the 2015 class.

West Virginia is coming off of a 4-8 season with no Bowl Game. Just got their 11th commitment and is currently ranked 10th in the nation and #1 in the Big 12 for 2015. Dravon Henry was the #1 player in the WPIAL and state for 2014 and signed with WVU.

What are these two schools doing that we aren't when it comes to recruiting?

    1. Haven't you read what Dokish has written regarding Chryst recruiting tactics since he landed in Pittsburgh??
Anyone who knows anything about football recruiting knew Chryst recruiting tactics were not going to work and they haven't.
Sterling lives 30min from campus and Pitt wasn't even the 1st team to offer the 6'8" 300# Olineman that Chryst covets. Pitt was like the 10th team to offer.

      Delete
    2. Maybe Chryst didn't covet Jenkins, and wasn't all that enthused about recruiting him. His tactics certainly worked on highly rated linemen such as Grimm, Bookser, etc.

Give the man credit when it's due.

If PC didn't covet Sterling Jenkins, we need to be looking for a new coach very soon. I'm not saying you have to get every bit of local talent, but Jenkins and Whitehead are the cream of the crop, why would you not go all out?

Also, you can't give credit for being ranked 53rd, that's when you're supposed to raise your eyebrows and start asking hard questions. Once football season ends, the focus shifts to recruiting. 3 commits in 5 months definitely ain't cutting it.

      Delete
    4. I'm not losing sleep opver a kid that's rated highly because of size and nothing else. Jenkins is a project, and as stated above, he fell for the sales pitch he got from an obviously questionable head coach. Have fun playing on the scout team for the next four years Sterling, you might play by your fifth year.

As for the package deal with the Quip kids being House's idea and not the kids, while I'm sure you know these kids better than me Jerry, I don't think it's a coincedence that Henry and Fields are going to the same school when Fields didn't have any offers above a MAC school yet somehow winds up at WVU.

    5. Jerry "The Mole"May 7, 2014 at 6:12 PM

Fields had Purdue, Cincinnati, Maryland and U Conn. His final choices were between Purdue, Cincinnati, Maryland and WVU. Maryland was taken off because Coach Gattuso got the HCPC job at Albany. That's 3 Big 10's and a Big 12. He had more major offers than he had MAC offers

      Delete
    6. and yet he ended up at WVU with Henry after henry soured on Pitt because around the same time they pulled the offer to Fields. You know them better than me Jerry, but I don't think it's a coincedence. If you're going to buy into what kids like Shell and Holins have to say about the program, you're really not being honest in your opinion then.

      Delete
    7. Shell and Hollins don't have any influence. Everyone knows Shell was a lazy ass in HS and college and got what he deserved.
That said, pulling the offer from Fields and not giving an offer to Swanson was the nail in the coffin. If you noticed, Swanson ran an 11.11 at wpial qualifiers this week and came in 1st. Instead they give an offer to a nobody from Shadyside??

Don't forget kids like Boyd, Cook, Thomas, Gardner, Johnson, and Weatherspoon. I guess their all liars. These kids all know one another and are very truthful when asked about what's really going on with the team.

Anonymous@151, maybe you're an upset Pitt blog watcher (Pitt Coach) because I definitely didn't mention Hollins or Shell, so in not sure where That rant came from.

But speaking of Hollins, the treatment of Hollins was unfair by the Coaching staff. He served his suspension in 2012 & was readmitted to the team to play in 2013. The two freshmen that were forced to play in front of him totally underachieved, when truth be told, he showed that he should have been out there all along. If it happened to Hollins, how many more kids are being politicized?

  16. Look, Sterling is a project by all accounts, mine included. He is going to learn a very quick life lesson if he goes to OSU and that is, if he doesn't produce quickly, he will be out within three years. Kids like Sterling need someone to guide them to the right program, not the glamorous ones. Sterling won't sniff the field in my opinion until he is a redshirt junior at best if he goes and stays at either school. Those schools recruit harder and have good stories to tell. Problem is, they are stories. Chryst tells the truth and is a man of his word. Sterling's only realistic shot at seeing a field early is at Pitt and in the left tackle position.

I wish him well at either school. No ill will, but he is one of many that misses the boat. Think about all the alleged local big time talents that tried other schools and fizzled lately, only to try and come back with Pitt. This is one area where i disagree with Paul Chryst. I would never let a local kid go to a Michigan, OSU or PSU, fizzle out, and try to come back to Pitt. My response would be thanks, but no thanks. That stance says to the future recruits that Pitt is not option 1A if the first school doesn't work.

As far as Henry is concerned, PC is teetering on messing up the Quip pipeline. You all must remember that rushell shell's name carries a lot of weight with kids that are still high school juniors and seniors. That smoke needs to clear from that debacle. I like what he is establishing here, with players that want to be here. PC runs the show. Full respect. No package deals (see quips). Kids are either all in for Pitt or to me all out. I want PC to adopt the all out once the kid goes elsewhere.

Most OL are projects and not expected to come right in Starting unless there is a dire need. PC is known for developing Offensive Linemen, so even if Jenkins isn't ready, under PC, he would've come out ready after his redshirt season.

For the record, the package deal was Pitt DC Matt House's idea, not our Quip kids'. Patrick Anderson already has Miami and Virginia offers from the ACC, WVU, 4 (Rutgers, Maryland, Purdue and Indiana) from the Big 10 & on May 18, Ohio State will offer during his visit. With 14 Division 1 offers and still none from Pitt, you wonder why the Quip kids feel disrespected....

Chryst already screwed up the Quip pipeline. Not just with 2014 recruits but also with 2015 as Jerry described. Pipeline Rule #1. You don't pull an offer from a Quip (Fields).

      Delete
    3. News flash: who cares. The obsession with local prospects at Pitt is part of the problem. The talent is W PA is gone.

      Delete
    4. Newsflash #2.
If Chryst can't land them out of Quip or wpial, he is not going to land them outside PA. I'm talking about 4-5star.
Pitt 2015 class only has 3 commits. 2 from wpial and the other from Altoona which is western pa.
PSU has 6 PA commits of which 4 of them are 4star.

  17. These recruiting ratings have some validity, but are regionally-skewed as local analysts who do the evaluation become enamored by the one player who stands out, in the midst of uneven competition. It hasn't always been this way, but how many of these 4* & 5* players from the northeast or midwest would be rated as high if they had to play weekly against 6-A competition in Florida, Texas, or California? Ohio State and Michigan classes are almost always top 10, yet neither of those programs have produced a (serious) national title contender in years (getting smoked in the title game because you were overrated doesn't count).

Maybe Chryst understands the reality of this, and is taking a different approach. It works fairly well at Wisconsin, though they don't have a Florida State or Clemson in their conference. But it's not as if we were all so happy and satisfied with Wannstache when he was dominating the state.

Ohio State had an undefeated season two years ago and lost in the Big 10 Championship and Orange Bowl ( A BCS GAME)

In 2101st, Michigan went 11-2 and won the Sugar Bowl (A BCS GAME)

Seems to me as if the those schools recruiting are justified.

It sounds like you were saying that going 6-6 is accessible and excusable because we don't have as many 4&5* players

      I had many typos.
About Ohio State, the losses occurred last season.

About Michigan, that happened in 2011

About Pitt, the word was acceptable

      Delete
    3. Not acceptable. Realistic.

Ohio high school football is much better than anywhere in the northeast, including Pennsylvania. No one but OSU is getting much more than leftovers in that state. Yet given that, neither that Ohio State team, nor that Michigan team had a snowball's chance in hell of winning a national title, despite their records. - which were largely the product of playing a B1G schedule. So yeah, they did alright, relative to their location.

    2. Need to check your facts before dumping on Wanny. We were 10-3 in 2009 and finished ranked #15 in the country. Pitt's highest season ending national ranking since 1983, Marino's last year. Year before Pitt was 9-4 and the 8 wins in 2010 meant 27 wins in 3 seasons, again most Pitt wins in 3 seasons since 1981-1984. 30 years bud. Wanny was building something, Cornhole destroyed all that.

  20. It's a new game at Pitt and that was my point Mole. PC won't play the game. He wants kids that want to go to Pitt. No primadonna's. He would rather recruit all 2-3 star recruits who can be coached up and want to be at Pitt, than a 4-5 star who needs to be coddled. Time will tell if this strategy is successful.

My sense with Anderson is that it is too late as you mentioned. Shell, Fields and Henry are strongly recruiting against Pitt. That is fine. If WVU goes 5-7 this year, Holgorsen will be gone. I don't mind losing recruits to OSU, Michigan and PSU. It is hard to recruit against playing in front of 110k fans, being coddled daily behind the scenes and living the life as a professional athlete whilst in college. That is what happens at those places, not at Pitt. Those are the realities.

At WVU, it is just football, women and parties....and an occasional class. I was on the field for a big10 game last year with 110k fans screaming their brains out for most of the game. It is deafening and a great experience that just can't be duplicated in many places. That sell is hard to beat. Sorry guys, those are facts. The gameday experience trumps Pitt by a longshot. This is why I am so harsh on Peterson. He could help the program and chooses not too.

With regards to BB, Clyde Vaughn might be available.....lol

Pitt stopped sending House to Aliquippa. Troy Douglas has come to check the kids out. Anderson, Gipson, & Pugh have been to Pitt at least 2-3 times since JR Day, so the interest is there. Truth be told, money talks. When I say money, im speaking about the scholarship. As an employee, you don't want to keep being told that you look good for the job, after hearing that once or twice, you feel as though the next time you talk, an offer should be made. Actually, if you watched the draft like I did, Donald din't move up the draft board until after the season. I think the experts all said he made hay at the Sr. Bowl or one of those all star games. Not, during his first three years even.

I think the dude hit it right on the head if you look at it honestly. He didn't project to first three rounds in November. Those are just the facts, but you guys are the experts apparently. He don't miss too often from what I read on here. Donald and Street were projected 4-6 rounders and Savage was a FA.

I don't need anyone to defend my position back in November regarding Donald. He was not considered a high draft pick at that time, but things changed not when he received the various awards, but when he tested at the combine and interviewed and spoke well.

He and AJMcCarron had opposite post seasons we learned today. Donald did everything right and tested well. McCarron said everything wrong and tested poorly which dropped his stock like a lead balloon. McCarron was believed to be 2cnd rounder back then.

Great job Pitt! Very positive showing.

AD made the big move after the season ended with awards and then a great performance at the combine and senior bowl. Flew up the charts. Savage did too. I wish them both well. Paul Chryst should be all over dline and qb prospects right now. Top of the line qb's should know what he has done for wilson and now savage.
