Panthers land giant center

Jamie Dixon landed a (very) big center for next year when 6'11" 310 pound Rozelle Nix committed to the Panthers yesterday. Nix, a Cincinnati native, is currently at Pensacola JC in Florida. He has two years of eligibility left.  His other two finalists were South Carolina and Loyola Marymount.

All schools want big centers so the fact that Pitt only beat out South Carolina and Loyola Marymount is very telling, and his 6 ppg and 5 rpg last year shows he is not somebody targeted to be a big star. On the other hand, big is big, and after losing a lot of weight he's now a better prospect than he used to be. If he continues to lose weight and improve his game (and he is a very hard worker), than he could be an asset to the program.

Bottom line, he probably won't be a force but he should at least provide some help in the paint.

  1. Ontario Lett is an assistant coach at Pensacola JC.

  2. I don't know why they wanted this guy so badly - looks to me like a fat Haughton or another BeeJay Anya.

They would have had Uchebo and Haughton along with Young manning the 5 as well next year - they must think they have little chance with Diallo...and they're probably correct.

  3. FWIW--Someone reported on one of the Board's that Dixon is actually very high on NIx and believes Nix will play in the NBA. I will withhold judgment on that opinion until I see Nix play at PItt in fall 2015.

  4. BeeJay Anya is a decent comparison, only Nix is much taller. Watching his HS video, which was two years ago, the kid is more athletic than you might think, and he has a nice touch from the FT line, and around the basket. Haughton has no offensive game, he is purely a tall skinny shot blocker, so that comparison is not apt.

  5. The QUESTION is Chris, "Do you think Nix is going to be a Star or something less?"

    Put your name on it.

  6. Don't take his freshman year statistics too seriously. He has already lost about 100 lbs., due to Ontario Lett's coaching, and will be playing more minutes and also playing above the rim this coming season.

    1. I've seen film of him after he lost the weight. He will never play above the rim.

    2. Ontario Lett claims that he was playing above the rim in July, according to a column by John Harris in today's Trib:

"When Coach Barton saw him in July, he was running the floor better than any of the big men there and playing above the rim, and playing with more stamina."

    3. Neither did Aaron Gray. But I would say he "Starred" for Pitt.

      What about this guy Chris?

    4. I already wrote it in that post. Cheerleading sites will try to convince the fans that he's going to be a diamond in the rough, but that's doubtful. Is it possible? Sure. But if a 6'11" 300 pound player was as good as the cheerleading sites say then Pitt wouldn't have had to battle South Carolina to get him. And if you look at tape at him he doesn't scream major talent.

  7. If he becomes Gary McGhee then I would considered that a success. When Gary came to Pitt he couldn't walk and chew gum at the same time, yet with hard work he became a serviceable big man, which is all we'll really need next year.

  8. Dixon has more skilled players then he's probably ever had they just need the center to play defense and rebounding and take up space in the middle I think that's what he's trying to do here
