North Carolina 40 Pitt 35

Stop me if you've heard this before- Pitt offense did well, especially James Conner and Tyler Boyd.  Pitt's defense is awful. The Panthers have now lost 6 of their last 7 and they would have to win at Miami to make a bowl. In other words, this year was a disaster.

1. James Conner and Tyler Boyd are superstars. Both maybe among the top 10 to ever play at Pitt. And their reward is a losing season. I can't help but feel awful for them.

2.  Conner was his normal superman self with 220 yards and 4 TDs on 30 carries. Boyd had 5 catches for 160 yards and a TD.

3.  Chad Voytik was his normal up and down self. He had some bad throws and fumbled to end the game, but he also 11-16 for 218 yards and a TD. He had no interceptions and also ran for 41 yards on 10 carries.

4.  The defense doesn't have the talent or the coaching. If Pitt does not make drastic coaching changes on the defensive side of the ball then the program is doomed.

5.  I don't really have anything else to say. I'm just disgusted by the Pitt football program. The leadership is incompetent.

  1. Until they fire House and recruit more playmakers on defense, Pitt will continue to disappoint its fans regardless of their offense.

  2. Who runs a cover 0, during 2 minute offense, with the corners that we have. Pitts played that play before the last NC TD as if he had safety help or his coverage was that bad

  3. House must go! The talent on defense may not be great however the coaching is abysmal

  4. I thought Voytik was more up then down. Started slow but settled in. Great throw to Boyd on the slant. He tried to make a play at the end of the game and coughed it up. That wasn't why they lost.

This game was lost on the defensive front. Didn't seem to be scheme as much as player's inability to tackle Marquise Williams. They had a bunch of clean shots at him that would have resulted in big losses and never got him down. The PI on a 3rd and long was another momentum changing play.

There are some players with potential on the defense but they are young and inexperienced. In the meantime Pitt is desperate for an impact player or two. They were beaten by one player today and maybe that doesn't happen if they had a linebacker or end that could bring him down.

I honestly thought Thomas tackled the back for a loss on 4th down late in the game only to see Williams with the ball and a first down. Maybe that was a case where the defense keyed on the wrong guy.

What a disappointing season. Chryst has to look at the performance of his defensive coaches and make changes.

  5. Chris,

What are the chances Pitt enters the 2015-16 season with the exact same administration and coaching staff? Do you anticipate any changes to the staff? I can't believe how much these team has regressed under the tutelage of Chryst. I thought he brought him some experienced coaches last summer.

  6. Chris -

Other than just curl up in a ball, is there anything you think Pitt fans and alumni can do to change the situation? I'm not terribly optimistic though, given a culture where these kinds of performances have been acceptable.

What's most frustrating is that things don't have to be this way. As a graduate of the mid 2000s, there was always an inferiority complex around that we could never be as good as Penn State. Seems like that mentality -- and resignation to defeat -- has carried over.

    2. But what do you mean by that? Letters and a website? Money talks at Pitt (as it does everywhere else), and the boosters that have it are the ones who have let Steve Pederson stay around and actively pushed the hiring of Chryst.

I love Pitt, but it's afraid of change and afraid of letting contrary voices come to the decision making table. Mark Nordenberg was a great chancellor--one of the greatest leaders in Pitt's history--but I don't know how much pushback he was ever getting from other parts of the institution.

  7. The evidence mounts for firing SP, as well. Not discussed by CD is that the AD is failing at basic management.

So, you hire an OC as HC who has not been an HC. Well, then it would be fine for the new HC to take a flyer on an untested OC who might become a star since the HC can always step in as OC. But you have to hire an experienced DC, since the HC cannot step in. With only OC experience won't be able to tell if the recruiting and schemes are good or bad. If PC had been an experienced HC, he might be able to step in. This hire of an inexperienced DC is a rookie mistake, but should not have been permitted by an experienced AD.

In sum, when the new HC is a former OC, he has to get an experienced DC. When the AD lets that happen he is ultimately responsible, OK?

    1. It's really much simpler than that: Under no circumstances, ever -- not even with a gun to your head -- should a then BCS-AQ (now Power-5 Conference) school hire an unproven coordinator as its head coach. Never ever.

THIS is what you get if you hoped the guy was ready but he wasn't. And now even though it's clear to every fan from kindergarten up that the whole cast of characters is lost and clueless, we're trapped in inertia because we're still hoping that we didn't epic-fail that badly, surely HCPC can't be THAT lost and clueless. But the writing is on the wall: Clueless is the least of his problems...

  8. Pitt coaching on defense...

They are who we thought they were.
Anyone with a clue about football coaching knew those hires and promotions in most cases were terrible. Not to mention their lack of recruiting ability for defense. What 4star player wants to play for House? I know what your going to say, Whitehead and I'm still in shock Whitehead selected Pitt. Maybe he knows something we don't?

  10. Some of our better tacklers missed lots of tackles today. Williams was tough to bring down but Thomas and Bradley missed many tackles. Some were cleaned up, some weren't.

And everyone (coaches, fans, himself (maybe)) has to be disappointed in how Lafayette Pitts has evolved over his career at Pitt. I thought he was a stud in the making when we recruited him but he was terrible last season and average this year.

  11. I'm speachless we seem to find a different way to lose every week.

They might win 1 more game this season, maybe, SU is not a gimme.

Chryst is going to get 1 more year and if House returns as DC then Chryst really had no clue.

  12. Chris,

Yes, the Defense STINKS and House needs to go. Nothing new here. Never supported House's promotion.

But the REAL REASON for today's outcome... not complicated. The BEST QUARTERBACK Won.

When the boosters got involved after Graham bolted and bought Alvarez's BS hook line and sinker to move Chryst this way, I posted it was a bad hire - for all the reasons you are seeing today

  19. You have to wonder if Pitt is truly a place of higher learning. The repeated failures of the athletic program far outweigh the success that sp has had in his tenure. Yet, the necessary changes are not made. Sp must go now. give the new ad an opportunity to evaluate the entire athletic department and move on programs that are not to standard..aka not winning...chryst gets another year but new ad pressures him to hire competent staff and if he fails miserably again hcpc must go. The college experience is one that includes a variety of different experiences..from classroom to athletic events..Pitt is not providing the opportunity to experience a winning program and how it is a part of the entire college experience..I am a season ticket holder for longer than I care to admit..frustrated..yes..demanding change..yes..will it happen? The answer rests with the new chancellor..does he want it to happen? hopefully so..

    With a very easy schedule.
The over/under at the beginning of the season was 7.5 wins.
    Most were leaning 8 wins.
Even if Pitt gets 5 wins, does Chryst hold his job?
Is he forced to major firings?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Pittt isn't serious about winning. It's fine collecting a check each year from the ACC for being mediocre at best. Why aren't the big money boosters making a move to force out the incompetent leadership of the athletic program? Pitt needs a culture change. Is Gallagher even listening? Does he even care? Pitt's brand is being diminished and nobody seems to understand how important balancing academics with athletics is to a schools long term success in attracting top students and alumni donations.

  25. The dilemma Pitt faces in the off season is what to do with HCPC. Next year is his last year on contract. If Pitt doesn't either extend his contract or fire him, then he is a lame duck coach next season which is not a good situation. Hard to impossible to recruit. The worst Pitt could do is nothing at all. If they fire SP and keep PC they almost have to extend. For me, I think both SP and PC are incompetent and should go - right after the season is over. We'll see what the new guy wants to do.

  26. This is the reality: We just might have the worst coaching staff in Division 1-A college football. Not just in the Power-5 Conference schools, but all of FBS.

This team has some talent -- more talent than a team with a 4-8 record. But try as I might, today I couldn't think of a staff that's done less with more. Whoever is second-worst is a distant second.

It occurred to me today that most Chryst defenders on this blog hide behind the "Anonymous" flag. And who can blame them? If I was a Chryst defender I wouldn't leave the house without a brown paper bag over my head....

  27. Pathetic how the administration doesn't care about football. That attitude should have landed Pitt in the AAC, not the ACC. How bad is your athletic department when an AD from another school (Alvarez) makes the coaching hire for you? Pathetic.

How pathetic when the athletic department sees all those empty yellow seats and doesn't think that could be $$$ if filled if a better product was playing? Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Does anyone think Chryst is really going to make changes to his staff? These are his drinking buddies, guys he trust. The school won't fund for a more established d-coordinator and one isn't going to Pitt anyway, unless the one name always mentioned really wants to come home, Todd Orlando.

Anyone notice for how bad the defense was the O only scored on three of its final eight possessions? A pathetic NC defense made plays when it needed to. The offensive guru must not really be one. Wisky and Russell Wilson were established before Chryst entered the picture.

  28. I would be more upset if we weren't competitive in most of the losses. Fix the defense with better talent and this team could be a big winner. Too bad they can't land 4-5 JUCO AA defenders for an instant fix for next season.

  30. Pitt really only cares about UPMC expansion. Pitt athletics is no where the economic beast UPMC is and with the relationship Pitt has with UPMC, the university can hide behind its official status as just affiliated. If UPMC needed 12 acres, Pitt would find it.

I'm thinking the money guys only picked Gallagher to continue the direction Nordenberg took Pitt with UPMC.

Sure Pitt cares about academics. It's ranking has been stuck in the 60s for large public universities. For all the talk about resources for academics, the status quo is pretty much it.

Of course, the BOTS love Dixon. College basketball is cheap to run.

And don't kid yourself. Steve Pederson is laughing at us all - especially at Dellovade who forced Chryst on us. Remember, Pederson didn't choose Chryst.

  31. The D staff needs to be cleaned up. I don't think Chryst is the man for the job, but he can buy one more year if he gets rid of House, Breckterfield (completely useless), Palermo, and Haering. None of them seem to be able to recruit nor can they coach. Obviously, it also comes to Pitt's administration giving the money to hire quality, but a D staff overhaul would at least give a little hope. I still think Teryl Austin is the best coaching option.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Teryl Austin is yet another in a long line of unproven coordinators. Nope, sorry, that's a non-starter.

How many times are we gonna repeat the same mistake?? If Teryl Austin wants to parlay his NFL ASSISTANT coach experience to try his hand at being a college head coach, then IMP he must MUST first show he has what it takes to be the head guy at a MAC school, or in the AAC or Conf-USA or Mountain West.

Only then, after he's proven he can be the lead guy at the lower level, should he be considered for a Power-5 Conference school.

Head coach jobs are front line, and require different skill sets than quiet behind-the-scenes coordinators. All Paul Chryst has accomplished during his nearly three seasons at Pitt is proven he should never have been promoted to a college head coach. And unfortunately, he did so on our dime.

What if Teryl Austin is Chryst Part Deux?

While I can't respond about the other two comments I will respond about mine. You stated that my comment about Pitt wondering if it was truly a place of higher was a warped one after a football game was lost and try to keep it in perspective. I understand the academic part of the college experience is the most important part of everyones life however, if you note I was referring to the total college experience where most students are looking for a social setting aka sporting events that the university provides as entertainment to break away from the rigors of academic life. My point was for the past 30 years the administration of this institution of higher learning who should be adept in running both a first class learning institution and a first class athletic program have failed the current student body and past alums like myself. No one wants Pitt to be more relevant in the sporting arena than most Pitt grads. I am sorry you don't feel that way and are currently satisfied with the status quo in athletics. Change will not occur in athletics until the head of the entire university deems it necessary to start fresh with a new ad and then start evaluating all the programs. Pitt is to superior of a university to accept the mediocrity that has been imposed on athletics.

Serious question: Let's say Pitt splits the next two games, finishes 5-7 and misses a bowl game, in a year when we cudda won 10-11 games and shudda / wudda easily won 8-9 games.

Does HCPC get called in and given an ultimatum to shake up his staff in order to keep his job after next season? If we had some coaches on the D-side who knew what they were doing -- or could at least get the most out of their guys -- no way we're in the toilet like we are.

Or say we lose both, finish 4-8 (which is easily possible), any way HCPC gets canned? Which he richly deserves, IMO, but the writing on the wall seems to be Chryst gets a 4th year no matter what. Which is sickening, but what can we do?

It's hard for me to believe that the super boosters, or higher-ups in the athletic department or the new administration can justify taking this squandered year lying down and do flat nothing about it.

    1. 0% chance he gets fired after this season. If he doesn't win 8 games next year I think it's at least a 50% chance. As for the defensive staff I assume there will be some changes. If there isn't then Pitt is proving again that they're incompetent.

    2. At this point - what does it matter if they change the DC? The guy hasn't recruited - there is no one to play at a higher level. No one would want the job - the only benefit... "we run a ball control offense that eats clock".

Chryst is done. He knows it. It's why he spent the bye week in Wisconsin.

  49. Funny, Showdown with Pompeani, Dejan Kova..., Peak of Rivals, Mueller of Fan.
Some were saying, it's not a coaching issue, it's a talent issue.
    smh dumb
Well, who recruited the players? It's a recruiting issue that falls on the coaches which as everyone knows, Chryst and House and other assistants can't recruit!! That is a coaching issue!!
DK brought up lack of adjustments on defense.
    Can't keep kicking Wanny anymore.
Saw this coming in 1st year for Chryst.

  50. Having Howard, Webb, Pitts, Whitehead, Henry, & Nicholson going into 2015 sounds so reassuring right now for our horrid defensive backfield. Thanks PC and House for settling on Maddox and Mitchell instead.

    1. Howard and Webb are 2 star nothing recruits. They do not below on that list.

  51. Not sure why some are so sour on Voytik he executed very well. We lost the last 2 games because of defense. End of story.

  52. Chris you say there is 0% chance of PC get canned after this year, and next year is put up or shut up basically. The issue with that, is that if he doesn't succeed which I think most people think he wont with the effort being put in this year.... it is a huge gamble for the future of the program. You get into a lame duck year of recruiting if they don't extend him early, which I can't see that they will. You pretty much have punted another recruiting class at that point. While the recruiting to this point hasn't been good, it has has provided a little depth going forward. I think for a prostyle coach to come in, this team looks enticing with the line and stable they have put together. If PC is going to get another year, I think you need to dump the money into a guy like Paul Rhodes to come back and take over the defense. A guy who could bridge the gap between head coaches if that is the case and keep the team together.

    1. Chryst is under contract for 2 years after this year, his lame duck year is not next fall, but the year after.

  53. The people who are saying Chryst should be fired are the same folks who are posting that WVU has "a commitment to football" and Holgrosen is good coach and that nonsense and yet he was 4-8 last year.

    1. Pitt would have an even worse record in the Big 12. WVU would have a better record in the ACC

    2. When Pitt wins a BCS bowl by scoring 70, beats the #4 ranked team, competes and almost beats bama like wvu did under Holgy I'll give chryst some slack.

      What's chryst biggest win?

    3. Convincing the Pitt administration that he'd be able to recruit?

    4. WVU has played #1 Alabama, #5 TCU, #7 Baylor, #12 Kansas State, & #21 Oklahoma on the current playoff rankings & was competitive with each team.
Pitt has played #18 Georgia Tech and lost by 28 otherwise ever team they've played has been unranked/mediocre and look at the results

    6. Good one Chris. I was going to say his biggest win was getting the HC job in the first place.

  54. Hold the phone a second, Anon @ 8:41. I'm among those saying Chryst should be fired after this season (unless by some miracle he wins the next two games to salvage a bowl, in which case he gets 2015 as a hot-seat year, but only under the express condition that he demotes Matt House and hires a legit DC).

But I've never once said Holgy is a good coach. He IS, however, better than Chryst, as is everyone else. Because Pitt has managed to hire the current #1 worst coach in FBS. Whoever is second-worst is a distant second.

Chryst is flat-out awful, and we deserve better.
