Pitt 76 Duquesne 62

Good performance by Pitt tonight and I much needed win. The Panthers were favored by 8.5 and won by 14.

1. The most impressive layer was clearly James Robinson, who has been a whipping boy for many, so it was good to see him come up big. On the night he had a career high 23 points, while also adding 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, and a block. Very impressive.

2.  Robinson is averaging 12.7 ppg this season. As a freshman he averaged 6.1 ppg and as a sophomore he averaged 7.6 ppg.

3.  Josh Newkirk was also very good and added 16 points, including 3-4 from three. He also added 4 rebounds and 5 assists.

4.  Another player who has had a lot of criticism, Joseph Uchebo, came up with his best performance of his career with 12 points and 9 rebounds.

5.  Chris Jones had another good game with 12 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal, and a block. He's now averaging 9.8 ppg for the season.

6. In the last two games Newkirk is averaging 16 ppg and Jones is averaging 15 ppg.

7. Mike Young had just one point and went 0-3 from the field, but he also had 7 rebounds, 2 blocks, and a steal.

8. Jamel Artis had a dry spell but he's been more productive lately,. He was both good and bad in this game (sometimes on the same play), but he did come up with 9 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 assists. In the last three games he's averaging 8.7 ppg and 7.3 rpg.

9.  Pitt held Duquesne to 37.1% from the field.

10. The Panthers out rebounded the Dukes 45-37.

  1. Chris -- Since the game wasn't on TV, I wasn't able to see it. Can you tell me about some of the things you saw that I can't read in the box score! I appreciate it--thanks!

  2. I didn't see the game. May watch the replay on ROOT today. There is reason to be concerned about this team and their NCAA chances but I think it's way too soon to right them off. They've played some good teams and lost a couple of games looking bad along the way. It's a marathon, not a sprint. They have a bunch of winnable games before conference play. Hopefully Wright gets back and gets his legs under him. The defense should improve with him back and other players gaining more experience.

I wonder if UConn fans have written off their team after they lost to Yale last night?

  3. Good god, is that Joseph Uchebo's music I hear??!!

  4. Why did Uchebo "only" play 14 minutes?
Why was Jeter benched for the entire game.

    1. Randall hardly played at all.

    2. I like Robinson, a real team player who works hard and makes free throws. But he's usually just great against weak competition. Athletic PG's usually torture him.

      Delete
    3. Because Jeter doesn't play D.

  5. Duquesne missed a *ton* of wide open 3's. They made a game of it towards the 5 min mark by making like 3 of them in a row. I still give Pitt's D a meh, esp that weak side help - slow to react.

  6. can't be excited, was Duquesne! w/ Holy Cross comming to town.....

  7. Young is travelling the same path as Taylor being overwhelmed at the 5. He will have no help next year with JUCO Nix, 3.5 pts. a game. I hope Pitt fans are kinder on Young than they were on Taylor and put the blame were it belongs over at least the last 3 years, the coaching staff; cannot break a press, shot foul shots, play defense, or recruit a 3 or 4 ranked center.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Young is having a very good season so I have no idea what you're talking about. And Nix is averaging almost a double double this season.

      Delete
    2. Young is obviously more talented than Taylor but I agree he would be more effective at the 4. In fairness, Taylor was productive as a senior considewring that he didn't see that many minutes behind Adams.

Guess I didin't know what to expect, but Haughton is a big letdown. I thought that if Pitt had a real good. mobile shotblocker in the middle, it would help make up for the poor defensive guards.

  9. Chris any news on rumors Pitt looking at player in JC in California?

  10. Not Pitt Basketball related but ESPN reports Wisconsin Head Coach Gary Anderson is leaving Wisconsin to go to Oregon St. Could Paul Chyrst live Pitt?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Wisconsin Head Coach Gary Andersen just announced he's leaving UW for Oregon State. Paul Chryst will be their first call. Everyone who wanted him gone is going to get their wish. And ya know what, I can't blame him. He's put in 3 years here, and he's done fine, but who can blame him for going home for more money at a better program? I wish Chryst well.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. First of all, you have no idea if Chryst will be the first call or even get a call at all. Secondly, Wisconsin was paying the accomplished Anderson the same as Pitt was paying unaccomplished Chryst.

      Delete
    2. Some people on the pantherlair are acting like we might lose Jackie Sherrill.

I don't think Chryst has what it takes as a HC (or ever will for that matter) but, I guess we could do worse......or could we.

If he does go, I hope he takes his pathetic coaching staff with him.

Alvarez sure pushed him for the Pitt job - maybe he thinks - "Ok, he cut his teeth at Pitt - now come home."

Ok by me - SP cannot make the next hire though if Chryst does go or the disaster will continue.

      I say... he stays.

      Delete
    3. We'll be happy to see him go

      Delete
    4. It will be telling if Alvarez does not offer him the job - that will show just how little Alvarez thinks of him.

Now if he is offered the job, this will be a great opportunity for the new chancellor to put his stamp on the program. Don't let Steve P make the hire - form a search committee that the Chancellor (or a trusted lieutenant) manages and hopefully finally straighten this sorry mess out

I hope Barry pulls the trigger and Chryst leaves - it won't be any loss. And it will give Gallagher the chance to fix this damn program. But I have a gut feeling Alvarez will pass because he does not think highly of Chryst as a head coach

      Delete
    5. God willing Chryst goes to Wisconsin.
      Pitt can't do any worse!

      Delete
    6. Be careful for what you wish, for you may surely get it. The current AD's track record at hiring football coaches is pretty lousy. Pitt can surely do worse if SP is doing the hiring.

      Delete
    7. Frankly, I'm hoping for Pelini.

      Delete
  12. Andersen was making 2.7M per year and Chryst makes $1.8M. You may be right that Chryst won't be their first call, but you're wrong that they make the same amount of money.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anderson was making 1.9 until March when he got a raise to 2.1. Basically the same as Chryst despite having more head coach experience. Wisconsin woefully underpays.

      Delete
  13. Wow you all don't really know what you really have as a head coach. When he got here it was a dumpster fire and it wasn't his fault and you're ready ride him out of time. You all deserve what you get your not happy unless you're complaining.

  16. Chris, Does PC leave for Wisconsin? Why would he stay?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. First of all, Chryst is at best one candidate of many. At worst he is not even a candidate.

If by chance he gets an offer, he will only leave if the pay is significantly better. Chryst is a man of character, and I think he would like to stay because he hasn't really accomplished his goals at Pitt.

But my guess is this is a non-issue, because he will not be the choice.

      Delete
    2. Pretty simple.
      Pitt has not extended Chryst.
If Wisky comes knocking, Chryst will go. Bird in hand theory! 5 years better than 2 remaining.
And I wish him well. Look forward to a knew coach!

      Delete
    3. Although I like PC and think he is doing the right things for the program, I really can't see Wisconsin taking him as their next head coach. Being a hometown boy with roots there doesn't mean you're the best candidate.

Wisconsin is a more high profile job than Pitt, and the expectations are a ot higher than what exists at Pitt. While they may be looking for stability, I'm sure they're also not looking for 6-6 every year either.

      Mike W.

  17. Other than stability, why would Barry Alvarez even consider Chryst? Would it be difficult for Alvarez to sell this hire to their fanbase with Chryst's less than stellar 19-19 record?

    1. The fan base is pretty high on Chryst - not universally mind you, but he's very well liked. Two of my college roommates as it happens have lived in Madison for years and are big UW fans. They were mad Barry helped Chryst leave in the first place.

  18. Money isn't the issue here. If he is offered the job it's going to be a tough decision for him he is a man of integrity. You just don't see that in sports anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  19. As someone who travels to Madison frequently I can tell you the fans still hold him in hire regards. When they find out I went to Pitt that is the first thing out of everyone's mouth. I believe the fan base would be happy with him.

  20. Anonymous 256: why wouldn't they like him? He has plenty of experience in coaching he's had great success at that school. The only people who think he can't coach live in Pittsburgh.

  21. My dream:

    Wannstedt - AD...oh, the irony.
    Tom Hermann - HC
    Tom Bradley - DC

We'd be back to the glory years in about 5 years - consistent top 15 team and winning the Coastal almost every year.

    My Nightmare:

    Pederson - AD
    Rudolph - HC
    House - DC.

    Of both scenarios:

Dream - 1% chance of that happening
    Nightmare - 50/50

    You know why?

    Because it's Pitt.

  23. I realize this is the classic unverifiable internet rumor comment, but the people at Pitt who are involved in discussions about coaches leaving and contract extensions have been meeting frequently since last night. I do not know what decision (if any) has been made, but people behind the scenes in the counsel's office, in the athletic department, and in the Chancellors office are not sitting back. Whether that means they're negotiating the buyout or working out an extension I do not know, but I do know those conversations started yesterday afternoon and continued throughout the day.

  24. And that is why Smiley needs to be shown the door. After being caught with his pants down when Fraud bolted, Smiley should have had contingency plan after contingency plan. But no, he is inane, if not stupid.

And if Gallagher allows him to participate in any of the strategic planning that may be occurring, Gallagher is no better than he is.

    1. Actually, the meeting happened today in Florida. Chryst was there for recruiting - you can confirm this quickly - and so was Alvarez promoting the UW bowl - also easily confirmed. I suspect we'll know by tomorrow night.

  29. ESPN reporting Chryst to Wisconsin - honestly, that should be great news for Pitt fans if true.

Ask yourself a serious question - did you really think that Paul Chryst would take Pitt to the proverbial "next level"?

He provided stability - nothing more. Let's get a young HC with some FIRE in his belly!!!

These two guys should get interviews #1 and 2:

Tom Hermann - OC at OSU
Pat Narducci - DC at MSU

I'd definitely give serious consideration to Tom Bradley as well.

If Pederson was not the AD, Pellini would get a look but Smiley Boy would never hire him.

I guess you'd have to think that Sal and Austin would get an interview too.

From all reports, the top two are HC stars in the making.

(I'd also give a courtesy interview to ImmamanI'm40!!!)

He knows his sh!t plus generally agrees with ZM. :)

    He has woefully underperformed

No one with a serious eye on Pitt football thinks Chryst was too big a loss, but the simple fact is, Pedersen has been universally horrible for Pitt football and he gets to hire another coach.
