The news of Jamie Dixon's death has been greatly exaggerated

Many feel that Jamie Dixon is on a downtrend because Pitt failed to make the NCAA tournament twice in four years. Here are some other big name coaches that failed to make the tournament at least twice in four years, and all happened once the coach was established at a school, not while he was building the program.

John Calipari
Jim Calhoun
Jim Boeheim
Billy Donovan
Tom Crean
Scott Drew
Jim Larranaga
John Beilein
Mike Brey
Bob Huggins

The average record for these ten coaches in the season immediately after the last missed year was 26-10.

  1. Thanks again Chris for the reality check. Seems that people have short memories when it comes to the success of Pitt being in 10 NCAA tourneys in the past 12 years. And this was done without NCAA sanctions, cheating, paying under the table that other programs have done. Keep up the good work and always enjoy your columns and your twitter notes. H2P!!

  2. I agree Chris....though there are of course no guarantees in life. I am guessing if you made a list of coaches who made the sweet 16 at least twice but then trailed off and underachieved for 5+ years afterward, would be a "name drop" list as well.

So, which I think was your point, this does not mean Dixon is done, but it does not mean he will bounce back either. 26-10 right now feels like a tall order if we don;t improve the 1 or 5 spots.

    1. Like I said multiple times. It's not a trend yet. It's happened many times to top notch coaches. If he misses again the two years then it's a trend and it's a problem. The point being that people are ready to jump off a bridge and it's way too early for that. I think most reasonable people think that Pitt will be right back in the thick of things in the next few years.

  3. Florida didn't even make the NIT this year, let alone the NCAA. And UConn is the defending NCAA champs -- NIT bound. It's hard to make the NCAA every year and Pitt almost pulled it off with a pretty mediocre team. We've become spoiled. ANd plenty of reason to think Pitt will be better next year.

  4. Chris .. did Jay Wright at Nova miss 2 straight years in the 02-04 timeframe ? He has much better tourney success .. how do you compare that job to Pitt?

    1. Yeah, but that's when he just started there so I didn't include that. And Villanova is a better job than Pitt, especially now. Philadelphia is a great local recruiting area and they can hit NYC and DC too. And now they should dominate the Big East so that will help them even more.

  5. Dixon to me has peaked in 2009 with Blair and has been sliding since. That trend of lower seeds and not making the NCAA tournament and questionable judgement of recruiting out side of the sophomore class is costly. Dixon is here mostly due to financial concerns and prior success of his first decade. All program have an ebb and flow, but the lack of a big man and a really good guard is and has been an issue.

  6. Chris ignore these people they got success looking Them in there faces and can't even realize it before Jamie there was no tournament it was no number one ranking there was no championships you don't have to justify their comments....

  7. I do find it kinda ironic though that Dixon is currently the 2nd best BB coach at Pitt. And it's not just because the Lady Panthers made the NCAA'a and the guys didn't.

  8. The top four coaches won a NC. Dixon hasn't come close in doing that. New AD will not make any significant changes this year in BB. He will see what is what and act accordingly. In any event, Pitt will have to live with that contract for at least two years IMO.

    1. The new AD will not get rid of Dixon either because presumably he won't be insane.
