Another piece added to the defense

Linebacker coach Rob Harley likes to quote from the movie "Glengarry Glen Ross" when he says "always be closing", and the best recruiter on the staff closed well by landing 6'4" 220 pound linebacker Chase Pine tonight.  Pine, from Lafayette HS in Williamsburg, VA is somebody I've raved about on Twitter for months, due to his great height, speed, and athleticism. He's also a big hitter that can cover and play the run. Other offers for Pine included West Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, NC State, Virginia Tech, and Virginia.

  1. This is the biggest and most exciting commit to so far. Hendrix is probably the closest I have come to being this happy about a recruit. A big time get with the ACC footprint. This is a very promising sign.

    1. He is in my book but I don't know how others rate him. Narduzzi and Harley loves him so that's good enough for me.

    2. Great. Everyone that I follow loves this guy? What is your thoughts on Moss? Is that a good get in your opinion?

    3. Rivals rate him a 3*. His offer list is impressive. A good catch.

  3. Really like this pick up, now just add Wheeler and Dwumfour and things will start looking up on defense. Doke did Cam Brown ever come in for a visit

  5. Chase Pine said last summer that ND was his dream school. He loved everything about it. He went on an unofficial visit on June 19th. I guess it wasn't all that it's cracked up to be. Good pick up for Pitt. Really looking forward to this season.

    1. Don't think ND offered him though, did they?

  6. It’s been a long time since Pitt has had a plethora of talented linebackers on its roster, but that appears to be changing under Narduzzi. Hopefully some talented defensive linemen will be added because we know there will be no shortage of talented defensive backs.

  7. Can Jamie Dixon hire Coach Harley as his recruiting coordinator? After all, Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders played 2 sports, so . . . .

    2. I talked about him a few days ago on Twitter. He's very smooth with the ball in his hands.

    3. I think I trust this staff's evaluations skills a little more than the "just offer" crew.

    4. Some coaches are genuinely better at evaluating players than others. Narduzzi does have a good track record of turning 2 stars in to first rounders. But you can only be right so many times. We have offered several rising senior recruits that have no offers and aren't even rated by any scouting services. Maybe Ffrench will be a great player. But a strategy built around finding guys that literally no other major program wants is not a sound long term strategy. We would never give Chryst a pass on Ffrench. Ever.

    5. There's been so many lightly recruited players that have turned into quality players that I've lost count long ago. And Chryst has had his fair share too. Every class will have lightly recruited players. Even the great Pitt teams had them.

    6. Chris you're right, and I should admit that I obviously have no idea if Ffrench will be good or not. Narduzzi forgot more about football today than I will ever know. But I think we need to be cautious when taking the Bricen Garner's and Maurice Ffrench's early in the summer.

These should be prospect that we can flip later if needed. We have maybe 18 spots in this class tops so I would like to see them slow play some of these low-end guys. We rejected Anthony Long's commitment for now at a big time need position but we're taking even lower quality commits at positions with less need. I really really like Narduzzi, and his staff, a lot. I do trust them. But, I'm not sold on some of these guys.

    7. You can offer kids that aren't rated or have a lot of offers yet based on your own evaluation. I really don't put that much stock in the star ratings because those are based on HS competition, where the vast majority of kids won't be continuing their football careers after HS, and basically football in shorts prospect camps.

As Chris stated earlier in these threads, even the great Pitt teams took kids that weren't highly rated, and that was based on their evaulation of the kid as to their program. You can't count on these kids always developing, but you can't count on 4 star kids developing either.

  9. Pines HUDL highlight video looks impressive. He closes on his tackles superbly with both speed and with his head up so he rarely gets juked out at the last second on his tackles. He's also a very versatile athlete. He has played DE,LB & interior lineman on D as well as WR & QB on the offense. Pegged is the starting quarterback for his high school this senior season.
His highlight reel screams four star as a linebacker.

    2. Karlo is just getting pretty loose with what he puts out there. Miles confirmed that he wasn't at Pitt today. I'm not sure where he got this stuff. 247 was also the board that reported Miles decommitted which was also false. Take their posts with a big, big grain of salt.

    5. He was at Pitt...he wasn't at Pitt...does anyone with legitimate knowledge actually know the truth?....Chris, can you help with this?

    6. Put it this way- it's better for Pitt if nobody knows certain people are visiting them.

  14. Where's the guy who was complaining that Pitt only had 3 commits? By my count, Pitt is up to 7 and counting.

  15. Chris - how often do schools pull offers after kids commit? For example, late in the recruiting process when a 4* wants to come to your school but no room.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That really only happens at the really elite programs. Pitt would never be in the position to do such a thing. And it's usually not as dramatic as pulling the offer. They just kind of stop talking to you.

  16. Hopefully Flowers commits today. Ffrench must have blown away the competition at the camp. His offers certainly don't reflect a kid who the staff needs a verbal from at this point. New Jersey certainly has its share of underrated kids, too. French certainly fits that mold at this point in time. A huge senior season and rival coaches will be kicking themselves for letting a treasure get away.
