Panthers up to 8 commitments

It's been a busy week for the Panthers as new Panthers head coach Pat Narduzzi added three more players. The first of the three was 5'11" 200 pound running back Chawntez Moss of Bedford (OH) HS. Moss has good size, speed, and hands, and he is known to be a very versatile back that can do a bit of everything, including returning kicks. His biggest offers, outside of Pitt, were Iowa, Indiana, and Cincinnati.

Yesterday, WR/CB Maurice Ffrench verbally committed.  Ffrench, from New Brunswick (NJ) HS, is a real sleeper at 6'0" and 180 pounds. He has very good speed and received some raves for his athleticism and hands at the Rivals camp

Today, the Panthers added the big time receiving talent that they need to lessen the blow of Tyler Boyd's impending departure by getting a commitment from 6'4" 190 pound wide receiver Ruben Flowers.  Flowers, from Lima (OH) HS, obviously has the size, but he also received raves this summer from national observers for his athleticism, good speed, and great hands. His other offers included Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, and Cincinnati.

  1. Next up is to shore up the trenches, especially on defense. I wonder if Narduzzi will go the JuCo route to bring in a pass-rushing end? Any defensive tackles will have the luxury of redshirting since Pitt has some decent depth at the position.

I hope the O-line coach can land that JuCo tackle who everybody wants. Likely won’t happen, but I still expect a solid three-man class as the line coach is supposed to be a wizard recruiter dating back to his days as Ohio State’s recruiting coordinator.

Either way, good start for the staff with plenty of big fish left in Western PA.

    1. more likely that they take 2, Johncarlo Valentin seeming like the other one in addition to Ford.

  2. With Penn State already having 3 DTs committed in this class, does that make it more likely that Wheeler stays in Oakland?

  3. Rumor on lair that there may be an additional 2 commits recruits soon. This weekend, perhaps?

  4. If Wheeler does his homework, then Pitt should be it!

  5. Looks like Wheeler got squeezed out. 3 DL this week with one spot left for Dioubate. Take Wheeler and maybe Gilbert. Holding out slim hope for McCrary and Polite. Keldric Preston is supposed to visit next month.

  6. If we get Brown, does this team take a 3rd outside LB this year to go along with the 2 last year. Im assuming since they were going after 4 last year that it would be reasonable to think they would get 3 this year. Imagine a linebacker group of Brightwell, Mckee, Pine, Brown and Pugh in a few years. Not to mention Robinson and Adams possibly next year. No more worries about putting pressure on the ball with those guys flying in from the outside.

    1. In fairness, some of these experts didn't expect these kids to get FBS offers at all. Not exactly an endorsement.

    3. Flowers has been mentioned with Pitt but he only got offered about a month ago after he got a lot of raves at the Rivals camp in Cleveland.

  8. This current recruiting class is getting interesting to me. There is a numbers game developing in the defensive backfield. The numbers suggest that we will only bring in one more cb and one more safety, would you agree? What positions do the 412 crew represent?

Also, the same could be said about the WR position. Aaron Mathews needs to hurry and commit or risk being caught up in the numbers game too in my opinion. Will Pitt now have a chance with Diobute(?) out of eastern pa because of the recent verbals to frankin?

    1. We currently have 8 - twenty total 'ships is the estimate as there will be attrition in fall camp.

There will always be a place for Mathews and Wheeler.

If and I'm saying when... ringleader Hamlin of the #412 crew commits, the flood gates will open.

In my mind, there's no question we get Hamlin, Wheeler and the rest of the crew - 2017 4 star Paris Ford says he will go where Hamlin goes.

My hope/prayer is to get Sanders to flip from Penn St.

Then this is your basic OMG staff because we ARE going to win with them and given time, they will prove to be tremendous recruiters as well.

Hell - we're now only showing recruits floor plans, dust and planks on the new facilities.

Wait until they're completed and we win ten games this year...and we're going to.

We as Pitt fans should all get on our collective knees and Thank God for Patrick Gallagher.

His "Excellence is not Selective" quote and his realization of the importance Football is to an athletic department as well as to an entire university will be paying us huge dividends for us in the very near future.

We're going to win 10 games this year - save this post.

Just wait and see - they are just getting started.

    2. It's probably needless to point this out based on your unabashed enthusiasm for Pitt, but if posting at 5:06 is any indication, then Mr Moody is an early riser & a go getter. That morning double espresso mixed with a shot of Pitt Kool aid seems to be working for you, my friend. Sure hope that your expectations are validated by our on field success this season.

    3. Oh I'm a Pitt homer alright...

    4. The most dangerous thing we can do as fans is expect a miracle turn around and a 10 win season with almost entirely the same team that went 6-7. We had one of the absolute worst incoming classes in the nation. This schedule is decidedly harder than last year - Louisville instead of BC, ND instead of FIU, and Iowa on the road.

The last staff had some very real problems, especially on defense. But we'll be lucky to go 8-4 and we should all expect 7-5. That would be an improvement especially given the schedule. If recruits or fans expect to see Narduzzi radically improve the win total in one year we're delusional. And if that is how people plan to evaluate Narduzzi's future at Pitt we're in trouble. It is not going to happen -- Save this post.

    5. No reasonable person is going to judge Coach Duzz's future at Pitt based on one season.

I'm very optimistic about his tenure at Pitt, but I don't expect a 10 win first season. I'd be ecstatic if he proves me wrong.

  9. Maurice Ffrench is very fast. Ruben Flowers is not. I don't see Flowers as being even close to a 4 star.

    ReplyDelete
  10. It was either Greg Lee or Antonio Bryant that had his 40 time reported as 4.8. I think a year in the weight room and proper training shaves a few tenths off of a high school time. So why the delay with the local commits.

If Pitt brings in a few more db's, things start to get crowded was all I was saying. I agree that Wheeler has a spot because we are thin there. Also, Pitt has been tremendous in honoring scholarships when kids verbal and then get injured during the early part of their senior year of high school ball. I would think that these kids would be counseled to get this process completed before donning the pads in a few weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I'd say things are clearing up and Pitt hasn't squeezed out the wpial like some other schools. There is still room for sanders Mathews Hamlin wheeler Pugh and Hudson. ...possibly Coleman too. I would be surprised not to see Mathews and wheeler commit soon.

    ReplyDelete
  12. How different is Pugh to dorin Dickerson when he came to Pitt. A ton of talent that eventualy had success exploiting slower linebackers at te.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Ending up with Wheeler and Gilbert committing to the Panthers would be a huge victory for us. Both guys would see early playing time since they play positions that we are in dire need of building depth at.

    ReplyDelete
  14. They need some dline help too.

    3. The fastest 100m time I found on him was 11.05, and that's considered fast so there really should not be a dispute.

      Delete

  16. Chris... a little perspective.

Jester Weah ran an 10.7 in High School. Adonis Jennings ran about the same.

Now, that's Ffast or at least Ffaster!

    1. I know what they ran. That just means they were faster, not that Ffrench isn't fast.

      Delete
  17. 11.05 would have put him in the top 7 in the PIAA AAA Championship this year. So...yeah I would say he is fast!

    ReplyDelete
  18. So according to the article and comments, Ffrench has good speed, good hands, good athleticism....at 6'0 180 it's not like he's too small....and yet no other P5 schools wanted him and he's a 2 star on rivals. Am I missing something here? Maybe we shouldn't be arguing whether he has a fast 100m time, maybe the discussion should be whether or not that is relevant to being a good WR. He must be lacking something if he's truly that fast and people weren't recruiting him, not to mention that outside of a kickoff return from your own end zone no one ever actually will run 100 meters on a football field, let alone in a straight line.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Players fall through the cracks all the time. James Conner didn't have any other P5 offers either. Aaron Donald had just one. Bill Maas is from Philadelphia and he didn't even get an offer from Temple. Antonio Bryant had only one other P5 offer. All four were All-Americans.

Todderick Hunt is a very respected NJ recruiting writer, and he raves about Ffrench.

      Delete
    2. Well that's a perfectly fair argument, but I'm not sure you can build an entire team from fall-through-the-cracks guys, and we sure seem to be getting a lot of them

      Delete
    3. Perhaps even more relevant, Darqueze Dennard was a 2-star with no other P5 offers & only 3 offers total. Trae Waynes was a 2-star with only other offers from Wiscy, Illinois & Iowa St. Each of those guys was a 1st round draft pick. Maybe Narduzzi knows what he's doing.

      Delete
    4. I wouldn't say there's a lot that fell through in this class at all. The only one that's really off the radar is Ffrench. The rest are all pretty known.

      Delete
  19. Also, it is still early and a lot of players stock goes up in the fall after they have played some of their senior season. Lots of really good HS players don't get noticed if they weren't the star of their team as sophs or juniors. This is why some kids don't get a lot of offers until coaches either see them live in camp or they "blow up" during their senior season.

  20. What’s a Pitt season without bad news. Jared Jones Smith is out for the year with a knee injury. Blew it out just jogging on a track.

Unreal. Bookser to right tackle, Officer to right guard and Rowell to center. Pitt can survive it, but not any more injuries to the tackle position. Hopefully Biz’ back holds up because Guy and Reese are the top backups. I thought Grimm played a little tackle too in the spring, but I could be wrong. What do we know about Reese?

This is why Boyd plays versus YSU. You need all your good players since it's all about your wins, not about teaching lessons. Those can be taught Monday through Friday and on Sunday.

    1. So is it your belief that a player should never be suspended, regardless of his off-field actions?

      Delete
    2. You make the other players run sprints until they drop with Boyd standing in the middle of it all. That'll make him feel bad and realize he better never screw up again while he's at Pitt. If he does, then he's suspended. It might make the other players think not to be that guy standing in the middle also.

      Delete
    3. I would base the punishment on what the player has done as not all bad actions are equal. An egregious act would merit a punishment directly affecting the player in question.

      Delete
    4. As close as Boyd was/is to being 21, I wouldn't have the school add anything to whatever the civil authorities impose since he was (apparently) well under the adult BAL standard for DUI. If he had been really and truly scientifically (vs legally) DUI I would have a different view.

      Delete
    5. It was a relatively minor offense, and Boyd has been cooperative. I think the most he will possibly get is one game.

Coach Duzz might want to set an early example that regardless of who you are, actions have consequences. Even if the penalty from the legal system is light, he might want to impose his own brand of justice..

  21. Chris do you have any idea how many scholarships Michigan and osu might give this year. All the talk about butler going to Michigan, but they already have 20 commits and there are 3 or 4 highly touted guys leaning there. I would think theyes are getting close to not having room for him. Osu has 16 commits, although Hamlin is one of the biggest prizes, they will have room for him.

  25. Look like this staff is not waiting around for players.

    ReplyDelete
  26. This staff can't just wait around for players, however if you think the WR window is closed, I disagree. The core is made up of 4 3* a 2* and some walkons after Boyd. I don't get so wrapped up into stars, but I do think we have a major lack of depth at WR. We have 4 wideouts coming in for this year. Henderson is the best recruit coming in and while very exciting, he is pretty much reserved to a slot. There are some burners, but I think Flowers, Winfree and Mathews could walk on the field and be the best three wideouts on the team. Therefore I wouldn't be shocked to see winfree and Mathews end up at Pitt.

    ReplyDelete
  27. That very will could happen and hope it does.I like how this staff is going about it also.

  28. I would expect a few more pieces to fall here shortly. If you count Hendrix, and we get winfree in the 2016 recruiting class. I also expect zach gilbert, rashad wheeler, aaron mathews to join shortly. Cameron Brown and Therron Coleman could also commit this month, but I would put them both at a 50/50. I think this lays a pretty solid foundation.

  29. I have read reports that OSU is the favorite for every major wpial DB over the next two years. Hamlin, Pryts, Ford and Wade. So let me try to get my head around this. The buckeyes have 2 commits in 16, 3 studs already committed in 2017, 5 commits in 2015 4 commits in 2014.... That means 14 guys already(most of which are rated as high or higher than most of the Wpial guys so its not like the Wpial guys are just going to be handed the jobs) and the "experts" think 4 studs from the Wpial are going to join that group. Some guys might be cool with sitting out and learning a year, getting their feet wet year two and thinking they will be able to hold onto a the job for a year or two before they head to the NFL. Other guys will think they are just better than everyone else in the country and be able to get a starting spot(maybe someone can). But I have an extremely hard time believing that the whole group goes to an already crowded team to compete. 1 guy, sure if Pryts or Hamlin go to OSU this year I wouldn't be shocked. I would be shocked to see a landslide of talent head to OSU. In my opinion, Pitt doesn't have a ton of depth in the secondary behind Whitehead for the next few years. They are the only team that could pull in a ton of Wpial talent and it make sense. Other than that, I see the talent splintering despite the reports they want to play together. This is a big year for the Panthers. Its a big ole what came first the winning or the recruits. You need the recruits to win and you need the wins to get recruits. The team is talented on offense and if they can minimize the big plays and get turnovers on defense, this team could win a lot of games. If they do that, you might just see an extremely talented team in the future.

    2. I should clarify, reports meaning "expert picks" and tweets. 247 had wiltfong tweet out that everything he is hearing has Hamlin going to OSU. If you look at 247 you will see that more people are picking OSU for all four kids. What I was hinting to was that 247 doesnt seem to be all the reliable.

  30. 247 is the worst recruiting site out there. As far as experts they are far from it and the worst recruiting site out there. The are primary PSU pushers who constantly pump them up. Their predictions many times are way off. And where the he** does Wiltfong get his info from anyways. Why does he not give the sources for his "info"? 247 is definitely unreliable...

  31. Maurice Ffrench is good. I had the pleasure of watching him as he is from my hometown. With that being said he was coached by my brother who was offered to Pitt in 05(Shawn Simmons) then dropped when Dave Weinsteid came to coach, I've seen a lot of him and he is fast didn't get a lot of looks because New Brunswick hs has only won 5 games in the last 8 years but they used to send players to D1 regularly eg. Dwayne Jarrett (USC), Jonathan Casillias ( New York Giants) anyway he's gonna be a good fit

Actually, which wpial kid went to osu and prospered? Tressel said the same things like urb. It's all about Ohio. Pitt is all about representing the 412 and 724. Keep the dairy high school and let them represent the 814.

    2. A case in point is Robert Foster. While he may ultimately be a star at 'Bama, he's barely seen the field so far. Contrast that with Tyler Boyd, who's already proven himself to be an exceptional talent who'll most likely be in the NFL after this year.

There's no substitute for getting on the field, as opposed to watching from the sidelines at a major program.

      Delete
    3. Agree on Foster. We might not know for sure, but had he come to Pitt he, like Boyd, could be gearing up for his last season at Pitt and joining the NFL ranks, along with Connor. I wonder if Whitehead makes a huge splash at safety and as a returner as a freshman and is next in line to follow Boyd and Connor?
