Where Pitt stands with top WPIAL prospects

These things are fluid but this is how I see where the recruitment of the top WPIAL stars in the '16 and '17 stands now.

Pitt is probable leader:

Aaron Mathews, WR- I have no idea why he is not getting more offers, but then again Tyler Boyd didn't get the offers he deserved either. The word with Mathews is that he's not a blazer but as he showed against top competition at camps this summer, nobody can seem to stop him.

Bricen Garner, S- Pitt is his best offer right now and from what I can tell, the Panthers are a big leader at the moment. But the staff are looking at a lot of talented defensive backs so he better not wait too long.

Kaezon Pugh, LB/RB- I know there was a lot of talk early that West Virginia was his favorite but if you follow me you know I didn't agree with that. As is often the case, an inferior choice comes on strong early, but eventually a top prospect usually makes the most obvious choice.  Pugh is close with Dravon Henry at WVU, but he knows even more people at Pitt.

Josh Lugg, OT (2017)- He already has excellent offers, and will get many more, but the Panthers appear to be the obvious leader.

Pitt is among the leaders:

Miles Sanders, RB- I would never predict an elite prospect to switch from the current Penn State staff to anywhere else because that staff is very strong in recruiting. But Sanders is wavering much more than he leads on and Pitt is among those he's looking at. If there is a mass commitment from WPIAL stars, and Pitt has a quality season, the odds will go up.

Therran Coleman, CB- For a City League kid he's not the sure thing you'd expect. Wisconsin could be a major player. This is another player that may be swayed if other WPIAL players commit to the Panthers but if he sees Jordan Whitehead and Damar Hamlin on the Panthers roster he may feel he'd be better off elsewhere.

Damar Hamlin, CB-  When many had him pencilled in for Penn State and then Ohio State, I was saying that Pitt is a major player. Now it's apparent that the Panthers are indeed among the favorites, and possibly even the favorite. In fact, if I was told that Hamlin was committing today I would go ahead and guess Pitt. But the Panthers will have to keep the heat on, and do well on the field.

Khaleke Hudson, S/RB- This is another player where people wrote off Pitt, but the Panthers are in the thick of it, especially if Hamlin commits. It would be a huge coup to get not only a McKeesport player, but the best one in many years.

Rashad Wheeler, DT- Yet another one that was written off, this time to Penn State. He's always liked Pitt, and he liked them even more after camping with them recently. It will definitely be a Pitt/Penn State battle and it's probably 50/50 right now.

CJ Thorpe, OT (2017)- A Penn State legacy so they may be the favorite, but the Panthers made an impression on him. It would be a real coup if they could steal him. As of now it's possible.

Donovan Jeter, DT (2017)- Another probable Pitt/PSU battle, though things would be even more interesting if Ohio State offers. The brother of Sheldon Jeter, and he likes Pitt and the staff a lot.

David Adams, LB (2017)- Was high on Penn State early but the Panthers have made up a lot of ground. Has stated that he definitely wants to play with Paris Ford, so that's good news for Pitt perhaps. If the Panthers land teammates Hamlin and Wheeler then the chances are even better.

Paris Ford, S (2017)- I've always had him going to Pitt in my mind, and if I had to pick today that would be the choice. He's one of the lynchpins to get a mass WPIAL commitment, and I feel that's good news for Pitt.

Lamont Wade, CB (2017)- This one is very interesting. By the time he could commit to Pitt, the cornerback position for the Panthers could be loaded but then again the same could be said for Ohio State and Penn State, who I would say is the other main options. He likes Pitt a lot but he's enjoying the attention of big time programs so this could go either way.

Pitt is a long shot:

Robert Hainsey, OT (2017)- An elite player that seems to be very pro-Penn State, and doesn't talk about Pitt.

    1. They have a great OL recruiting class. Are you joking?

    2. Yeah I don't look at things with blue and gold glasses on like you guys do. When i see the recruits that they have currently committed right now how can you not say it's impressive?

Will Fries 4* NJ and the 15th ranked Guard in the country (Pitt Offer)
Alex Gellerstedt 3* OH and 44th in OH (Pitt offer)
Connor McGovern 4* PA #1 ranked Center and Rivals top 200 (Pitt Offer)
Michael Menet 4* PA #6 Tackle in the country and Top 100 in the nation (Pitt Offer)

But yeah we have Brandon Ford who I think has promise but is no where near the pedigree of any of those guys except for Gellerstedt.

      How that helps you understand.

  3. They actually have a great O-line class committed right now, they landed a highly regarded JUCO last year along with Jenkins so they are doing pretty well recruiting right now. Will they all turn out? No probably not but they have Menet, Mcgovern and Fries already committed.

    1. Jenkins is vastly overrated. He's just size at this point.

  4. I think this staff is going to clean the WPIAL house - my guesses:

    Top 4 plus:
    Coleman
    Hudson
    Hamlin
    Wheeler
    Jeter
    Ford

Sanders and Wade will be a real challenge but as Chris said, If Pitt DOES get a lot of these guys to commit and we win 9 which are my expectations this year, we get both of those as well

And then...Franklin will be gone in two years because he won't be able to compete with this staff much less dominate the state.

    How sweet that would be.

    1. Franklin is being overpaid at PSU ... the only way he is gone is if they show him the door.

  7. A lot of people are talking about the elite guys and Ohio State. There is no way that Tony Butler switches to OSU, Hamlin goes to OSU, Wade and Ford go to OSU. They had five DB come in in 14.... all four stars. 4 more 4 stars and a 3 star last year. They also already have two elite CB for the 17 season. And out of all that talent, they will probably only start one of those kids. Thats 9 4star players in two years and all of them but one will probably be a back up or redshirted. Thats because they will have studs that are seniors. Just like Foster down in Alabama, this isn't a school where elite kids show up and play, you sit at least one and likely two years before you see the field. I don't see this group of Wpial players all signing up for that. Not to mention that OSU is in on another dozen elite defensive back this year and another half dozen next. If we were talking a DB, a WR and a Guard....Then I could see OSU being major competition. But when the Wpial is loaded with defensive back, I find it hard to believe more than 1 if any will go to OSU.

  8. Interesting thing, momentum is. I think Hamlin will not be too far behind. Listen they can all verbal now and change if the panthers tank with wins and losses this fall. Garner is a solid prospect and we shouldn't lose sight of that.

The NCAA may be implementing an early signing period which may hurt Pitt for a couple of seasons as kids get caught up in the big programs and commit. The problem for PSU and OSU is that early commitments can be problematic if the player peaks in the 11th grade or gets lazy. Going to be interesting.

  10. PSU does have a good OL class coming in next year. But this years and last years was average at best. Pitt will get it's share of talent in WPA but will lose some as well. But the dominator will find recruiting better than it has been, but not enough to close the gap in the BG1.

  11. Peak tweet Hudson visiting Pitt today, always a good sign.

  12. Chris I think you have more Penn State fans on this blog then Panther fans. I also think with you that this years recruitment of WPI AL players might be the best that pitt gets In quite a few years.

    1. Definitely not a PSU fan at all, I am a die hard Pitt fan. However, I can acknowledge deficiencies in recruiting and realize when a coaching staff is basically getting our top targets. We have 3 guys committed right now and PSU has 10.

I posted above how Penn State has 4 OL commits right now and 3/4 of them are 4* and two are Rivals top 200 players in the nation.

Just because I can admit someone is outperforming us right now doesn't make me less of a Pitt fan.

Sorry for being objective and stating facts.

    2. Let's wait until letter-of-intent day before making any definitive statements about recruiting. It's only mid-June.

If Narduzzi was here a year earlier, Nicholson, Henry, Maddox and Whitehead would all be starting going into the 2015 season. Pitt would have the best group of young DB's in the country

    1. Probably not. They have bigger targets. There may be an outside chance with the Jacksons.
