Chris Clark is a Panther

UCLA transfer Chris Clark has committed to Pitt, before their game today against Notre Dame. He has taken a circuitous route as we all know, but the 6'5" 250 pound Clark was the No. 1 tight end prospect in the 2015 class. He will sit out next season and then have three years to play three years.

  1. interesting ... didn't think we would get him. Can't wait to see what the team will be like in 2-3 years after Narduzzi has upgraded the talent and put his stamp on the program. Today's game clearly shows how much disparity in talent there is .. and, while ND is very good team ... clearly, there are even better and more talented programs out there. We cannot win consistently against top teams when Peterman is the leading rusher and we have to resort to gimmickry on nearly every possession. I like where we are headed but it will take a couple of years. H2P !

    1. We'll see major improvement at defensive end when Hendrix and Edwards are the starting ends and Blair and Soto can stay where they both belong -- on the bench.

At linebacker Brightwell, McKee and Pine will help out in a big way. Still not liking what's at MLB. Same with the defensive tackles. That crew has regressed these past two weeks.

Today was the second consecutive game where the defense forced two fumbles and couldn't recover. Bad luck, a step slow, bad bounce. Recovering both, and how Blair didn't get the second, would have been huge.

  2. Great news, We need more top notch players.

It was apparant today how Chryst's bad recruiting has left this program where it is. Narduzzi can only do so much with the current talent. Need more weapons on offense and playmakers on defense

Looks like they are coming though

  3. We got beat today handily. I wonder how Temple got so much talent that they were able to take ND down to the wire. Granted, Fuller was probably the best on the field today but we had so many dropped balls and missed tackles that could have kept the game close. Is that from lack talent?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Temple is in their third year with their head coach and they are really fast. Pitt will be the same in two years.

  4. The difference now with Pitt is that u feel they have a coach and an adm. that really want for Pitt to be a top 25 program. There is no question in my mind Narduczzi knows what he needs to do and I believe he will get the players and make Pitt a top 25 team every year. How good, well we have to wait just how good Narduzzi is, I think he is good, but u just never know what u have. If he is that special coach that u only find once every 20 years i hope if he is willing to stay Pitt does whatever they can cause Narduzzi looks like he can get the players, it just cannot happen over night.

  5. What's with pitt coming out flat the last two games on offense and defense. Or are they coming out tight?

    1. They're coming out untalented. ND is a top 5 team. Pitt can't compete with them yet.

    2. Dontez Ford is no 2 star. He can flat out play. And what about that no-call?

      Delete
    3. He's a good player. And that was a catch.

      Delete
    4. That was a catch; at the very least pass interference was blatant. I'm not an Irish hater, but ND does get away with a lot of non-calls.

I'm sick of seeing great plays like the one Ford made be scrutinized to such an extent that even the slightest bobble will nullify the play. I'm all for getting blatant errors corrected, but it's ridiculous that a great play like that was overturned.

    3. Relationships with the coaches, players. etc., opportunity to play early, fans, the city, and on and on. Whether a team wins or not means nothing to them. That's just one game. They have to decide if they want to live and work there for the next 3-5 years.

  7. Chris, I realize this I hypothetical...what's our record with James Conner in the lineup?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Impossible to say but they're missing him a lot. They're running for about 75 yards a game less, and that's a lot.

      Delete
  8. James Conner single handily masked the issues that plagued this team last year. When he fell forward for 4-5-6 yards every play, it didn't matter that we had one guy to catch the ball. He made the offensive line(which was good) look even better because he would get hit a yard behind the line and fall forward for 2 or 3. Slowed the game down, moved the chains and kept the defense off the field. Now when you add Conner into what the team is doing now, he could have made a pretty big difference in the game today. At the very least, maybe Chaney would have had more faith in giving him the ball even when they were down a couple of scores.

Team is getting much better, learning to play the right way and make adjustments. They just need talent and depth.

  10. This has been a year of many changes for the football program. There is a chancellor who wants the team to be successful and that has trickled down through the entire Pitt organization.
Those Pitt fans who always complained that HCPC was vanilla and showed no emotion on the field or at his press conferences please watch HCPN on the sidelines during the game and watch his presser when he obviously is annoyed about the loss and answered the one question maybe I should have called you out of the stands to cover ...It was classic and shows he wants to win and how irritating losing is to him.
The talent disparity was very evident from the third play of the game when Pitt went down 7-0.The team did not quit and they are playing to the coaching up level that they can.You cant teach speed or height.
Current recruiting appears to be ready to roll and in two years this team will be awesome. Keep the best local talent home and winning will happen.
In the meantime,go to the home games and support the team in the last two..

  11. Chris, are you hearing anything that Conner may in deed return this year?

    ReplyDelete
  12. I know we've probably peaked on talent level on offense, save for a heavier dose of Whitehead in the remaining games, but is anyone else frustrated with how quickly Chaney gives up on the run? How can you force a defense to put more than 7 in the box if you don't run, run, run? Ollison runs for 5 yards a pop on 1st down and instead of going back to it, we run a toss sweep to the short side, or we try some gimmick that sets us up 3rd and long and very predictable. Is Chaney just forced to deal with what he has to work with or is his play-calling partly to blame in limiting our effectiveness on offense?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm not as critical of Chaney as others are because he doesn't have a lot to work with, but I do think he's not quite getting all that he can. Probably should just run down the opponent's throats more.

      Delete
    2. Eventually we have to start blaming Narduzzi for letting this continue. Coach should tell Chaney to run, run, run if it's gaining five yards a pop. The play calling would have looked better if receviers were making catches or Peterman wasn't so off in the first half.

  14. Chris, any thoughts on WR. Chayney has a chance to get these young guys reps and he's not. I get it burns a redshirt, but.....I'm assuming they're confident they get Winfree. He can play next season correct since he went JUCO. The biggest thing that could impact the pass game next year is Conner deciding to return. I think the kid has a legit shot to be a late first round early second if he returns and proves himself again. I can't see him going any earlier than late third if he goes this year.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Wide receiver could be better than anticipated if Pitt lands Winfree, Flowers contributes as a true freshman, Ford as the third, Challingsworth as the fourth and hopefully Henderson picks it up as a sophomore. I can’t believe no one has mentioned Ordoff’s drop in the fourth quarter where he looked disinterested in catching it.

      Delete
  15. It doesn't matter if Conner goes in the 4th or even 5th round because it will still be better for him to go. Taking a beating in college instead of the NFL will not help him.

As for WR, they just aren't ready yet. If they move Whitehead to WR next year and he's joined by Winfree and Flowers, then WR next year is suddenly better.

  19. Chris, must admit that Peterman didn't have a good game on Saturday. In fact,, his past for games were a little dubious. Why won't Chaney give some plays to Voytik and see who has the hot hand. Seems like Voytik is really in Chaney's dog house?

  20. My question concerns Narduzzi secondary personal this year playing Maddox at the corner. He is continually the target of the QB for deep balls, even if he is close to his opponent he gets pass interference because he never looks back. However that's better than another TD pass. Chris do you have a reasonable answer why Whitehead is not at CB instead of safety except that our front seven has trouble tackling and Whitehead leads the team in tackling because he is one of the few defender who gets under the runner and raps up his legs.
    Thanks the DB.

Chris, what does the coaching staff think of Ollison? I haven't been as impressed as others. I think his skills are fairly limited, and I'd like to see James or Hall get more involved. I thought when Conner went down, we wouldn't be missing too much since we have two 4-star recruits in the backfield. One can only imagine what this offense would look like with Conner in the backfield. It would certainly keep defenses on their heels.

Like others have mentioned, I haven't been too impressed with Chaney's playcalling. However, I think a lot of it has to do with the lack of talent on offense (outside of Boyd).

  23. Dokes, what do you think about switching Whitehead to offense. He Looks like he would provide some needed speed in the running game. He really seems like a RB because his was praising the offensive line. I know PN suggests they want to play him on both sides but do you think that's a good idea?

My sense is that it will be 6 months of litigation (at least), but an easy win for the Petitioner. I haven't read it yet but upon first blush, the second part of the suit will be more prolonged. Hopefully they bifurcate the issues and rule on the transfer issue early.

I saw this quote from Duzz----“We watched the highlight tape of some of the great plays that Pitt has had against Notre Dame through the years,” Narduzzi said. “The thing I kept seeing was tailbacks making plays and making people miss. I think that this is a direct message to Miles Sanders. Come and be our guy.

  27. Looks like Scarpanito could apply for a sixth season if he wants to play another year of football. Makes sense when you break it down:

    2011 – redshirted
    2012 – played
    2013 – played
    2014 – retired
    2015 – played

The 2016 season would be his fourth season of play on the field, which all players get -- four years of play in five years. It would be a matter of how the NCAA looks at his 2014 retired year. If Mark got it, how nice to have him and likely allow three defensive tackles the chance to redshirt.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I understand your logic. But Pitt's DL was exposed against NC and ND. So if any of the new DLs can play better than returnees, they got to play.

    2. Sometimes players are just better than others.... more talent, more physically dominating and so on. Sometimes the longer someone is in a system and the more they have matured the better they get. A seasoned interior with some studs coming off the end would be nice. We might be pulling some decent recruits, but lets not expect them to do a whole lot their freshman year. Not everyone is Jordan Whiteheadl

      Delete
    3. Hargrove and Wheeler won't be ready, and if the third is hopefully Watts, he won't be ready either. Those true freshman tackles who can mix it up with 22 and 23 year old are usually 315-330 pound freaks. Pitt's guys look like sure-fire redshirts. Scrap would be much better with an offseason of lifting.

      Delete
    4. Darryl Render played 11 games as a freshman and he wasn't exactly an elite prospect. None has to be a star. You just may need one to be the fourth or fifth guy. And let's not forget that the interior hasn't been that great this year so the bar isn't that high.

      Delete
    5. Chris you're exactly right they only need the freshman the be backups.they got the big kid coming in from Tennessee and they're going to redshirt the junior college kid.I think you forget Mr Gilbert son I think the kid is big enough now to play right away if they get him.

  35. My wet dream/s for Pitt.

    1. Conner comes back next year with chip on shoulder.
    2. Miles comes in and you have one of the best 1-2's in the country.
    3. Tyler Boyd listens to mom and finishes college(for the record I know this is selfish and he needs to do the best thing for him)
    4. Clark gets bumped up by NCAA and can play next year.
    5. Winfree comes in with Flowers, Ford and Boyd. James and Henderson move into a slot.

This team would be absolutely loaded on offense. The line will be good to great and this team will be able to score with anyone.

    6. They finish out 2016 signing Hamlin, Hudson, Mathews, Valentin(yes huge longshot, but this whole thing is), Gilbert, Thompson, Watts

    7. 2017 brings in a class of Ford 4* Loe 3* Robinson 3* Marshall 3* Houy Garbutt 4* Lawler 4* Hansard 4* Jeter 4* Thorpe 4* Adams 4* Wade 5* Clement 3* Heyward 3*

    8. We prepare for our playoff matchup.

  36. That's about as wet a dream can get Anonymous but, I like your positive energy.

    Realistically:

    1) - this happens - I've been saying this for a long time
    2) - Sanders does flip imo.
    3) - no way Josey
    4) - I "think" that can happen
    5) - scratch Boyd but, I think we get Winfree.

    6) - I don't think we get Mathews - Pitt only wants him at a certain position - I believe it's either WR or safety and he wants to play QB - think his ship has sailed.

Hamlin and Gilbert are done deals - Watts is the one I really want out of the rest at a position of need.

    7) - Wade would be the cherry on top - his "handlers" want him to go to tOSU.
Thorpe being a PSU legacy will be a challenge.

    Would love Hansard as well.

Basically other than Boyd coming back, there's real possibilities in your dream.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The focus right now should be ending the 6-6 streak. I have this bad feeling it happens due to the next three teams having better talent than Pitt. That would be disastrous and cost Pitt recruits.

I think Connor is gone with Boyd.

Sanders and an improved Ollison and the third-down back coming back from injury gives Pitt three strong tailbacks.

An O-line of JJ-S, DoJo, Officer, Biz and O'Neill would be incredible. A senior QB throwing to, hopefully, Winfree, Ford, Flowers, Challingsworth and Henderson wouldn't be too bad. I can't get over the talent in that starting five O-line.

Hendrix and Edwards gives Pitt some major speed at defensive end. McKee, Brightwell and Pine add some talent to the linebacking corps. Cornerback is a huge concern.

  40. Key to the game Saturday is the health of the Duke QB. If we contain him and hit him hard a few times early, I think we have great success. The offensive game plan, focused on the run, naturally leads to lower points. When you don't score a lot of points, it keeps the opponents within striking distance all game.

We need to have a strong offensive start and keep that going. Many blame the OC for the increase in passing attempts when that is not our perceived strength. Our offense, with a focus on the run, doesn't score enough, so when the opponent gets into the 20's early, we become hamstrung in an effort to score. No conservatism once we get the lead this week.

I do think we hurt their qb if we contain him and hit him. Brilliant statement, right! He is quick, nimble and dangerous when healthy. Need to exploit his weakness right now, which is physicality. RUN BLITZ early and often!

Just read where USC is putting like $150million into the coliseum....and we won't consider a 50,000 seat stadium. If the football program is the front porch of the university, the front porch should at least be in the same zip code! Embarrassing!

  44. @anonymous "I think the zags didn't have their starting guard.....so the result is kind of a no result."

Zags have all new guards this year. We were without backup PG Damon Wilson (hamstring) and Maia got minimal PT because he is recovering from cracked ribs and below par. You are right that Zags will be better later in the season; but so will Pitt as our new players settle in more as a team.

Regardless, there is now enough evidence, IMO--the eye test half against the Zags and what has been leaked about the Georgetown (pre-season top 15-20 team) secret scrimmage (rumored we won by 12) to know we have a much better team than last year--particularly in terms of front court depth and size with the resulting ability to rebound effectively (giving up very few 2nd chance points). In addition, it is evident that the drop off in talent level when we go to the bench is minimal compared to last year so we can rest starters more while remaining "in the game" and/or maintaining a lead against comparably talented teams.

IMHO--We will see this improvement initially suggested by easier victorys against OOC cupcakes (more often blowouts rather than just comfortable double digit wins) as our subs will continue domination when starters are on the bench.

On the Coastal side, I'm hoping between Pitt/UNC/VT/GT/Duke, there can be 2 consistently ranked teams every year.

    1. FSU and Clemson will stay up there and I think Pitt will be a perennially ranked team. Plus, I think VT and Miami will be up there. I think those are the five best programs in the ACC and as long as all five have a good coach, they will be top 25 caliber.

  54. @ POD,

Congrats. It took you a while, but you figured it out.

  55. Excited for the Louisville game. It has been a long time since I believed that most games on Pitt's schedule were legitimately winnable. It will be interesting to see how this recruiting class rounds out (which will hopefully get us excited for improvements on the field each year).

  56. Watched Maurice Ffrench play tonight in New Brunswick, NJ. He lines up at RB, wildcat QB, and slot WR on offense, CB on defense. Also punted tonight. He was on field every play except kickoff.

New Brunswick was #2 seed and lost tonight to #3 Old Bridge 26-12 so his season is over.

Ffrench is an exciting player. He threw for the first TD after a broken play fumble about 45 yd throw. He ran 50 yds on a highlight reel run for their second TD. He's not big but he's not the smallest guy out there either. Runs with some authority when being tackled.

All in all probably a good project. 2-3 stars is accurate IMO.

  57. With one move Pitt could improve it's defense significantly. Put Whitehead at corner. Is the DC brain dead. Maddox has given up 5 to 7 solo touchdown passes
    this year.
Hypothetically with Whitehead at the corner Pitt could be in BCS contention.
Please explain why Maddox is still starting at corner.

    1. Because he is (1) the best corner they have and (2) he is good at that position. Whitehead doesn't play CB because he is needed at safety in PN's defensive scheme. Counter factual analysis is always fun but it allows me to ask: who would have made all the tackles Whitehead made if he was playing CB?

    2. Good reply on Whitehead's position at safety. Is there really no one better than Maddox to put at the corner. Is there a possibility for next year from a red-shirt or pure freshman.
      Thanks

  58. I said at the beginning of the season that wish Pitt would simply beat the teams they should beat, and if you lose to the Iowa's and Notre Dame's that's ok. I'm shocked, 8-3 with that formula, not always pretty, but I'm pretty certain they would be 6-5 with most of their past regimes. This is nice, although the attendance sucked, but it was a fairly rowdy crowd, at least in my section. HTP!!!

  59. I though the attendance was pretty good ...there were more actual Pitt Fans there as there was for the Notre Dame Game...add the Irish crowd and it would have been full today.

Only issue I had was the mass exodus of the Students after Sweet Caroline...they had been good all season. Oh well, it was Saturday night, I guess.

Traffic was also an issue with 2 of the main tunnels coming in/out of downtown under construction.

But the adult crowd was great especially in the first half when several spontaneous "Let's Go Pitt" cheers rocked the stadium...first time I've heard that level of excitement in 8 or so years...now if the OC can just learn to run the ball up the middle when we have a big lead and quit with the uneeded trickery and wasted wideout screens... especially when your big back is averaging 4 yards a carry...

Great fun and a great game tonite. H2P

  60. Tough topic, but reality. Scholarship players who may not be asked back, leave on their own accord or going pro.

    1. Conner
    2. Ripploe
    3. Jaquan Davidson
    4. Chris Wuestner
    5. Tyler Boyd
    6. John Guy or Gabe Roberts
    7. Shane Roy
    8. Reggie Green
    9. Zach Poker
    10. Chad Voytik

A couple of players could also redshirt who've played and could be more beneficial down the road: Darrin Hall, Patrick Amara, Tre Tipton.

    1. If Price gets a sixth season, the end spots will have Blair, Price, Hendrix, Edwards, Folston, Soto, Roy, Poker, likely Gilbert and another D-end recruit.

I’d actually redshirt Blair with all those numbers, even if either Roy and Poker left the program.

Redshirting is vital for a program like Pitt.

  61. Chris,

I am as excited about Pitt as I have been in my lifetime. I was wondering what you think the team needs to continue to sustain this momentum. Do you see any challenges to maintaining the 8 or 9 win level in the years to come?

    1. I see no reason why things won't continue to improve.

  62. My expectations are already ratcheted upward. Maintaining an 8-9 win level should be the floor with 9-10 win seasons the norm and 11-12 win seasons coming along every 2-3 years

  63. Did Pitt get a big Time flip?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Reading between the lines, I would assume Pitt flipped a Woody High RB. Maybe not the one everyone is hoping for, but a solid player who could make one heck of a LB. If you know who the new recruit is and don't post this tonight, I'll assume I am right.

  65. Great season by our Pittsburgh Panthers. This last game was a little disappointing that leads into my question. The guys had numerous games this year where they got behind in the first half would you guys say that is talent or preparation for the game let me know guys. HtP

    1. Seems like Pitt fell behind versus teams with way more speed. That had an impact along with other factors. Today's struggles by Peterman killed the Panthers. He looked poor in every facet and seemed fazed by the Miami pass rush. Narduzzi might want to bring in the JuCo QB, Ford. DiNucci and Bertke offer no competition for Nate next season. Zero! MacVettie needs to redshirt.

    2. If you're going to give the coach credit when they win and are successful. You also have to question why your coach doesn't have his team ready in the first half of the last game of the year.

  66. Pitt was not ready to play today. That is on HCPN. They looked and played like a Paul Chryst team.

    1. You're half right, IMO: The first half reminded me of a Paul Chryst coached team. Listless, rudderless, no passion....

But Chryst House & Company showed almost no ability to make major halftime adjustments last year -- or any year -- to climb back into a game being down by 3 TDS. I don't remember any game in their tenure where Chryst House & Co. made such a major comeback.

I'm not blaming the kid, not at all. But if Blewitt makes those two kicks? We probably win that game yesterday. Show of hands from anyone who predicted that was even remotely possible when it was 23-3 at halftime? And/or, if you remember any game that Chryst House Inc. made such an impressive improvement mid-game.

Narduzzi said it well in his post game presser: his guys don't give up. Same guys under the previous regime did because they followed the mood set by their leaders.

Good riddance to Paul Chryst and especially to Matt House.

  67. Can anyone confirm that Gilbert committed?

  68. Should sway sanders more to come to Pitt. Some further discontent in happy valley.
If I was unsure and then this happened I know I would be even more unsure. Barkely, no/new OC, narduzzi, Pitt ascending, and the 412 crew are huge factors that didn't exist a year ago!

    1. Maybe but then again he'd play for "I don't like to run" Chaney. Plus it's not like we don't have a back log of backs too.
